Distinctive features of the chest of drawers

Even if you have a large living room, not everyone decides to cover a wall with a large closet. To find a place to store things, headsets are installed along it. A chest of drawers will help solve this problem - a classic piece of furniture that is returning to our apartments. Structurally, it consists of boxes located one above the other. Now they have begun to produce models that, in addition to standard drawers, have sliding or hinged doors. In addition, such furniture has a base, legs, table top and, of course, fittings.

Even now it looks like a huge chest, with drawers cut into the front. This name translated from French means convenient.

The chest of drawers allows you to partially free up the room

The use of such furniture in the interior gives the apartment owner several advantages:

  • The upper part of this furniture is used as a convenient table. A TV or decorative elements are installed on it;
  • Even medium-sized models rival cabinets in capacity;
  • Easy to use, therefore often installed in children's rooms;
  • Reasonable cost;
  • A large selection of forms of such furniture decorated in different styles makes it easy to choose a product suitable for any interior.

Externally, they look more compact; greater capacity is achieved due to the design of the product. Thanks to drawers, it becomes possible to use 100% of the volume, which is impossible with conventional cabinets.

Types of construction

There are many manufacturing options. Remember that chests of drawers come in different sizes. The main part of the types of this furniture is of French origin:

Bombe

The front part and sides of the structure are made convex. That's why he looks "pot-bellied". There are large drawers inside.

Bombe chest of drawers (bombe shape)

Seminer

Very narrow, but elongated in height. There are a large number of narrow drawers inside, with small drawers in the upper part.

Highboy

Even narrower than the previous model and the drawers are smaller.

Varguena

The model was created in Spain, the top part is occupied by a secretary. It has a narrow folding table. At the bottom there are regular linen drawers.

Chest of drawers

Nowadays they make chests of drawers for the living room with doors located on the edges, and drawers are placed in the middle.

There are several types of products for the living room:

  • Straight. Strict regular shapes, models are shorter, but the depth of the product is greater;
  • Transitional. Narrow but long model;
  • Angular. Due to the peculiarity of this design, open shelves are placed along the edges;

Calculation of drawer length

Regarding the calculation of the length of the drawer, you need to first of all know that roller and ball guides come in the following lengths: 250mm, 300mm, 350mm, 400mm, 450mm, 500mm, 550mm, 600mm. These are, so to speak, the most popular sizes. There are also ball guides up to 800mm long. For roller guides, as far as I know, there is a length limit of up to 650mm. Although, you can clarify these parameters with the accessories seller, someone who knows exactly what he has on sale.

It would seem that calculating the length of a drawer is as easy as shelling pears: if we install guides with a length of 500mm, then, accordingly, the length of the drawer will be equal to 500mm. But for our people, 4 centimeters is not just 4 cm. No, for us it’s FOUR CENTIMETERS! And the fight for them will be tough and principled.

So, in our situation, the internal depth of the cabinet is 490mm. It is clear that a box 500mm long will not fit here. It turns out that you need to place the drawer on guides 450mm long. But we have 490mm of free usable space. We will not give 40mm to the enemy! Well, it’s not 40mm, but somewhere around 35mm (5mm can be left for force majeure situations that may arise during the furniture assembly process). In general, we make a drawer 485 mm long and rejoice at the additional space we have gained. True, such a box will not move out completely, because our guides are shorter. But this is not critical. There will still be enough access to the things stored in the box. But we increased the capacity of the structure. Amazing!

I would also like to draw your attention to this. The fact is that drawers come with internal and external facades. So, when calculating the length of a drawer with an internal facade, you must always remember the thickness of this very facade. That is, if the internal depth of the cabinet is 490mm, then the useful free space (provided that the facade has a thickness of 16mm) will be equal to: 490mm-16mm-1mm=473mm. It is from this size that we “dance” when calculating the length of the drawer. And I discarded 1mm so that the inner facade of the drawer was slightly recessed into the cabinet. By the way, we also screw the guides, stepping back from the edge of the bulkhead by about 17mm. So that the facade “goes” inside.

Varieties

Original furniture can completely change the interior of a room. And here the chest of drawers will be no exception. Modern designers have come up with many different designs.

Mobile and landline

The first models had a base and stood on legs; they were moved only as a last resort; these products are called stationary. They are most often installed in the bathroom or office.

Mobile structures have rollers instead of legs; if you lift the clamps, you can easily roll them to another place, and lower them to fix the structure.

Used in bedrooms connected to a study or children's room.

Installation relative to the wall

Based on the location of the chest of drawers relative to the wall, they are divided into:

  1. Wall mounted
  2. Wall mounted
  3. Attached
  4. Island.

Wall chest of drawers
Any name speaks for itself. Wall-mounted ones are those that are placed along the wall; for them the norm is unattractive. Wall-mounted – suspended using hinges. Attached - installed next to other furniture, they are often sold as a set.

The drawers of these models open to the side or in both directions.

Forms

The bulk of the models are made in the traditional form - in the shape of a rectangle, and installed along the wall.

Corner models - located in the corner of the room, there are many varieties - L-shaped, trapezoidal, triangular, five-walled. Dimensions vary - from a small corner element to one that takes up a lot of space.

Corner chest of drawers for bathrooms

Radius - a curved design, often close to an ellipse or semicircle; a large version may have concave and convex sections. It looks original and is well suited for a high-tech or modern style room.

2-3 people can use it at the same time without interfering with each other, only by turning a certain section towards themselves.

Combined - a species capable of changing its shape if desired. The design of this type varies; most often they create a transformed tabletop in combination with drawers, which turns the table into a small chest of drawers when moved. Often they use modules that move along the frame. This furniture is decorated in a modern design; such a chest of drawers does not fit into a classic interior.

Combination chest of drawers

Designer form - if the desire arises, then it is given the most original form. Plastic and wood are used, allowing you to embody any ideas that appear in your head. They create chests of drawers in the form of a woodpile, the head of Nefertiti, the figure of a naked woman, and so on. In this case, the internal volume is almost not lost.

Designer option

Island - used for zoning the room and for storing things. For convenience, it uses drawers that slide out in different directions.

Standard sizes

Typical dimensions vary depending on the shape. If the average dimensions are maintained, then it will have the same height and width equal to 90 cm, while maintaining a depth equal to 45 cm. The increase in height is up to 130 cm and width up to 150 cm, while the depth decreases to 40 cm.

Chest of drawers with dimensions

The permissible dimensions of the chest of drawers are taken taking into account the ratio of the area of the room and the usable volume.

  • The height is at least 85 cm, otherwise it turns into a cabinet. This does not apply to the mounted version; it is mounted at a convenient height, for this reason it is made lower;
  • The length is at least 50 cm, otherwise the length will not be justified from any side - such a chest of drawers will turn out to be of low functionality;
  • The depth is at least 30 cm, in small drawers, it is difficult to store things.

For a bedroom, very small structures are not needed - such a room requires storage space for blankets, linen and other things, and even neatly folded they take up a lot of space.

  • The optimal height is about 130 cm. The surface of this furniture is not intended to serve as a table, but does not apply only to a chest of drawers;
  • Depth up to 50 cm, if the depth is greater than the length of a person’s arm, it will be inconvenient to use the box;
  • They make different lengths, they make a design - the width of two drawers, this is approximately 180 cm. A long chest of drawers is a horizontal element of the interior, for this reason it can be longer.

They can be the same, forming a rectangular structure, and it is permissible to make drawers of different sizes in one chest of drawers:

  1. Small boxes - reduced to the size of a tea pack, jewelry is placed in them;
  2. Tall – used for storing pillows, blankets and linen. In a chest of drawers standing in the bedroom, there are at least a couple of drawers of this size. In addition, dresses and warm sweaters are folded in them;
  3. Long – necessary for bed linen, storing hosiery and knitwear;
  4. Long and narrow - used for various accessories.

How to make a chest of drawers from chipboard, online calculation of cabinets and drawers

Regardless of the overall dimensions, any chest of drawers made of chipboard is schematically represented by a cabinet frame and nested drawers.

Let's look at the example of a chest of drawers with a height of 750 mm, a width of 600 mm and a depth of 450 mm.

  • The chest of drawers is not calculated; the dimensions are determined by the given dimensions of 600x450 mm .
  • The stand (sidewalls) of the chest of drawers are usually made shorter by 20 mm (chipboard thickness 16 mm + thrust height 4 mm). In order for the chest of drawers to hang over the facades, the countertop is also reduced in depth by 20 mm. That is, the size of the stand will be 730x430 mm . And you need two such parts.
  • The bottom of a chest of drawers made of chipboard is calculated simply - we subtract 2 chipboard thicknesses from the width of the lid - 16x2 = 32 mm. The depth is equal to the width of the stand. The bottom size is 568x430 mm.
  • Planks and plinth . The chest of drawers can be secured to the corners. But for the rigidity of the frame, it is better to mount it on planks. I make the width of the planks equal to the height of the plinth, usually 80 mm. 568x80 mm. Three details.

It's simple. If you are “friendly” with Excel, then you can easily enter the data into a table along with the above formulas. And the program itself will calculate the dimensions of the parts depending on changes in the dimensions of the chest of drawers you need.

Nuances of calculating boxes

Making your own chipboard chest drawers is just as easy. The main thing is to decide how high you need them. Let's simplify our task - let all the boxes be the same. At a height of 750 mm, you can make either three deeper drawers or four smaller ones. Let there be three boxes.

  • The size of the fronts of a chest of drawers made of chipboard with your own hands is calculated by the height of the stand and the width of the lid. In our case, from 730 mm you need to subtract 80 mm (the height of the plinth) and divide the remainder by 3. Free-motion facades are made somewhat smaller, because they will be rolled along the perimeter with an edge and their final size will increase by the thickness of the edge. Usually subtract 3-4 mm from the width and height. We get in rounding (730-80)/3-4=213 mm. Total 3 facades measuring 213x596 mm.
  • The side of the chest of drawers is calculated relative to the depth of the body and the length of the guides. Guides are offered by manufacturers in 50 mm increments, ranging from 250 mm to 600 mm. In our case, the depth of the stand is 430 mm, which means the depth of the box will be 400 mm. The height of the sidewall can be set explicitly. I usually subtract 80 mm from the facade, with the expectation that there will be a gap of 30 mm at the bottom and 50 mm at the top. But here - as you like. Linen drawers can be made deeper. It turns out 6 sidewalls measuring 400x130 mm.
  • The front of a chest of drawers made of chipboard (front and back of the drawer) is calculated by the width of the chest minus 90 mm. We get 6 parts measuring 510x130 mm.

Now the Excel table can be supplemented for automatic calculation.

All that remains is to calculate the dimensions of the back wall of the chest of drawers and the bottom of the drawers. These parts will be cut from fiberboard. They are calculated simply: so that the edges do not protrude, 2 mm are subtracted from the outer perimeter of the back and bottom. We get:

  • The backdrop will be shorter by the height of the plinth, 648x598 mm.
  • The bottom of the drawers in our case is 540x398 mm, 3 parts.

Formulas can also be entered into a table to automate calculations regarding changes in the dimensions of the desired product.

No. 1. What size should a chest of drawers be?

It is crystal clear to any of us that a chest of drawers should not only fit in the bedroom, but also not interfere with free movement around the room. It is important that there is room for drawers to be pulled out. If the space is small, and it already contains a double bed and a bulky wardrobe, then finding a place for a chest of drawers will be problematic. However, if there is really a need for it, then there are very miniature models on sale. The main principle that should be followed is the proportionality of the bedroom and chest of drawers.

The smaller the room, the more carefully you need to take measurements . First you need to arm yourself with a tape measure and measure the parameters of the space allocated for the chest of drawers. We remember and go to the store with the same tape measure. You will need to take measurements of the chest of drawers when all the drawers are closed and when they are pulled out and the doors are open. Measurement is taken from the edge of the back wall to the edge of the open drawers. By the way, if there is a baseboard in the bedroom, then do not forget to take into account its thickness when taking measurements.

The size of the chest of drawers also depends on its purpose . If you will be storing small things like cosmetics and CDs, then you can take the smallest model. To conveniently arrange your laundry, you will need a larger chest of drawers.

The parameters of chests of drawers vary widely:

  • height is at least 85 cm and rarely more than 160 cm. Dressers 85 cm high are the bare minimum, smaller ones are cabinets. They don't hold much but can be used as a bedside table. The standard height is 120 cm. In this case, the tabletop can be used to display photos, souvenirs, install a TV, and in some models, also for ironing things. Dressers taller than 130 cm are rare, but there are products up to 160 cm high. You can store a lot of things in them, but the tabletop can only be used to place a lamp;

  • length depends on the number and configuration of boxes. Dressers less than 50 cm long are inconvenient, the optimal length is 90-130 cm. Models longer than 200 cm are mainly modular products and are appropriate only in very spacious bedrooms;
  • the optimal depth is 50 cm. If it is more, it will be inconvenient to use the drawers; if it is less, you will not be able to fold laundry. However, for bedrooms they make chests of drawers with a depth of 30 cm, but when deciding on such a purchase, keep in mind that the useful depth will be even less, since it is necessary to subtract the thickness of the back wall.

Designers advise choosing tall chests of drawers for low bedrooms and vice versa. This way you can make the space more harmonious.

No. 2. Deciding on the type and shape of the chest of drawers

The appearance, shape and purpose of a chest of drawers are inseparable concepts and depend on each other. The choice of shape depends on the style of the interior and the place where the product will be located. The shapes of chests of drawers are :

  • rectangular _ These are traditional chests of drawers, which are the most convenient to use and are in greatest demand;
  • corner chests of drawers can be L-shaped, trapezoidal, five-walled, or have the appearance of a circle segment - there are many variations. The main thing is that such models are great for small bedrooms and allow you to make good use of corners that are often left empty;

  • radius chests of drawers with curved shapes can be semicircular or include convex and concave parts. Such products look original, but will not fit into all bedrooms - they require space and an appropriate interior. Separately, it is worth mentioning round chests of drawers, in which the drawers can rotate relative to each other;

  • designer chests of drawers can have any shape and are usually made to order.

According to appearance and purpose, chests of drawers are usually divided into:

  • long chests of drawers are a real classic. They can replace even a small wardrobe. Great for the bedroom;
  • a display chest looks more like a sideboard, can be used to store beautiful dishes and is usually used in living rooms and dining rooms;
  • chest of drawers combined with mirror, is an excellent option for a bedroom, as it takes on the function of a dressing table, especially if all cosmetic accessories are placed in the top drawer. A good option for small bedrooms;

  • chest of drawers with ironing board It is distinguished by the presence of a folding ironing board on top of the tabletop. It’s convenient if every square meter counts;

  • chest of drawers with changing table - a godsend for young parents. This product is characterized by the presence of sides on the tabletop;

  • , the chest of drawers can be transformed into a compact workplace. For small bedroom sizes, this is also a good option.

The impulse of design ideas knows no bounds, so you can find other transforming chests of drawers on sale.

No. 3. Dresser material

Let's start with the banal mention that a person spends at least 8 hours in the bedroom, i.e. third of the day, which means the air in this room should be clean and healthy, and the furniture should be as safe as possible and not emit any toxic substances. Ideally, use environmentally friendly natural wood, but there are other options.

Dressers are made from the following materials:

Designer products may have some elements made of genuine leather or stone.

  • laminated chipboard sheets;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • confirmations;
  • guides;
  • PVC edge;
  • furniture handles;
  • nails.

No. 4. Number and location of boxes

The classic design of the chest of drawers consists of several wide drawers located one above the other. Traditionally there are 4 of them, but the number can vary from 2 to 5 or more. In many models, instead of wide top drawers, 2-3 narrower ones are made . There are chests of drawers where all the drawers have different widths; in some, the interior space of the drawers is divided into several parts by partitions for convenient storage of belts, ties, and cosmetics. If you have things that need special protection from prying eyes, then you can look at a chest of drawers, where in one of the sections there will be a compartment under lock .

Boxes of different sizes can be combined in any way you like, and their number can be many times greater than the standard 4 sections. Despite the fact that the traditional design of a chest of drawers does not include doors, today there are models where part of the space is occupied by shelves with doors. In any case, you need to choose the chest of drawers in which you can place all your things as conveniently as possible.

How and what to paint?

New furniture made from chipboard does not need painting . With a well-chosen texture and color palette, the chest of drawers will delight its owners with its aesthetics and stylish design. But if the furniture is many years old, it has wear, chips and other defects. When painting furniture, it gives the original attractive appearance. The process of painting a laminated chipboard chest of drawers is as follows:

  1. Dust and dirt are removed from surfaces and the product is degreased.
    For this, various household chemicals are used. Next, you will need to wipe the chest of drawers dry with napkins. Some craftsmen disassemble furniture items before painting. But this process is long and quite complicated. If the design of the chest of drawers is not complex, you can do without disassembling it first.

  2. Next, you need to make a rough surface for better adhesion of the paint to the surfaces. The paint will not apply evenly to laminated parts. Therefore, the product is cleaned with sandpaper.
  3. In order for the paint to lie evenly on the surface, the chest of drawers will need to be primed. For these purposes, polyurethane-based primers are selected . When priming the chest of drawers, all fittings must be sealed with masking tape (this is the case if you prefer not to disassemble the furniture).
  4. Old furniture often develops chips, cracks and deep scratches. If this happens to your chest of drawers, all defects will need to be puttied before painting. Latex putty or epoxy resin-based compounds are suitable for this.
  5. After filling the cracks, the furniture must be primed again and wait for the treated surfaces to dry completely.
  6. Now you can begin the dyeing process itself. Alkyd or polyurethane enamels for furniture are suitable here . When painting the chest of drawers, it is recommended to use a velor roller. Unlike foam rubber, it does not absorb paint as much and does not leave air bubbles. The paint is applied in two layers. The second layer is applied only after the first has dried. To reach hard-to-reach places, use a small brush with beveled edges.
  7. The last stage is varnishing the product. It is better to choose a water-based varnish. It will protect the product from increased moisture and prevent scratches and chips.

Attention : since dust from laminated surfaces during the cleaning process is harmful to health, it is necessary to work in a respirator.

Advice : if for some reason laminated chipboard does not suit you, try making a chest of drawers from cardboard. And next to it you can put a frameless chair or a knitted ottoman.

No. 5. Drawer pull mechanism

No matter how many drawers there are in the chest of drawers, and no matter how conveniently they are located, you won’t be able to use them normally if the drawer mechanism is made poorly. Ideally, drawers should roll out very easily, but not fall out, even if the pullout was very abrupt. In the closed position, all drawers should be in tight contact with each other and with the walls, resting on the bar on the back side.

Modern chests of drawers use the following extension mechanisms:

  • roller guides – the most budget option, but they can make a lot of noise during operation. The guides are made of plastic or metal, the latter option is preferable, but it is important that the wheels have a rubber rim - then the noise will be less. The disadvantage of the roller guides is that they do not allow the drawer to be pulled out more than 5/6 of the depth, but it certainly will not fall out;

  • ball guides are able to withstand any load, operate silently, but increase the cost of the chest of drawers and require careful handling;

  • Concealed mounting guides are the most modern option. All elements of the mechanism are located not on the sides of the drawer, but under it, which ensures the maximum level of extension and the impossibility of falling out.

No. 6. Dresser equipment

In addition to the drawers, the chest of drawers should have a lot of other elements to ensure ease of use. These include:

  • pens . They can be anything in design, from antique to the most modern, the main thing is that they are easy to use. There are chests of drawers without handles that open when you lightly press the drawer, but such a system is appropriate if the façade of the product is not glossy, otherwise you may be bothered to wipe off fingerprints;
  • legs may be completely absent, regulated or unregulated. The presence of this element is a matter of personal preference, but the ability to adjust the height of the legs will come in handy if the floors in the room are uneven;

  • a closer for drawers and doors ensures their smooth opening and closing and prevents sharp impacts that can damage the body of the chest of drawers;
  • The stopper prevents the drawer from falling out. It is appropriate when there are children in the house, but it complicates access to things located at the far wall;
  • fastening to the wall makes installation of the chest of drawers more difficult, but prevents it from falling when all drawers are pulled out at the same time;
  • lighting in chests of drawers It is quite rare, but makes it easier to find the desired item in the dark.

No. 7. Stationary, mobile or wall-mounted chest of drawers?

According to the possibility of movement, chests of drawers can be divided into:

With stationary ones , everything is clear, they stand motionless on legs or a base, moving them from place to place is possible, but difficult. The mobile chest of drawers is equipped with rollers, thanks to which you can rearrange it very easily, and thanks to the lock, the chest of drawers will remain motionless. An option for those who often make rearrangements.

According to the method and features of installation, chests of drawers are divided into:

  • floor-mounted – a common option that is placed against the wall, so its back wall may not be particularly aesthetic;
  • wall chests of drawers They are attached to the wall, they can be fixed in any necessary place, but re-hanging/rearranging them will be problematic. Ordinary wall-mounted floor-standing chests of drawers can also be additionally attached to the wall, especially if there are children in the house who like to climb and hang on various pieces of furniture;

  • An island chest of drawers should be aesthetic from all sides, as it usually plays the role of a partition for zoning space. Often in such chests of drawers there are drawers on several sides.

What's next?

After you take the parts from the cut, with a ready-made edge or edge it yourself, purchase the accessories according to the list, what remains is:

  • Drill out the blanks for confirmations.
  • Screw on the guides and bearings.
  • Assemble the frame of the chest of drawers and drawers on confirmations.
  • Nail the back wall and bottoms to the drawers.
  • Install and adjust the guides.
  • Carefully “distribute” the facades, screw them and install handles.

Drilling parts is also a rather dusty process. But in fact there are not many holes in the chest of drawers. Therefore, it is enough to free the room from what cannot be washed and close the door. And, of course, arm yourself with a vacuum cleaner to immediately remove shavings and wood dust before it scatters throughout the apartment.

No. 8. Dresser style and color

It is not enough for a chest of drawers to be comfortable and roomy - it must fit into the interior and decorate it. The easiest way is to take all the bedroom furniture as a set - then all the items are guaranteed to be combined with each other. If you had to buy a chest of drawers separately from the rest of the furniture, then try to follow the general style and color scheme.

The appearance of the chest of drawers largely depends on the chosen style of the bedroom interior:

  • classic style involves the use of natural wood of valuable species, forged parts, panels. It is better if the chest of drawers is not very large and rests on legs;

  • Baroque, Rococo and Empire require more elegant curved forms, an abundance of decorative elements in the form of carvings and gilding. Material – wood;

  • Provence requires the use of a light-colored chest of drawers. The preferred material is wood, preferably artificially aged, minimal decor;

  • hi-tech and minimalism – these are laconic forms, the use of modern materials, incl. plastic, metal and glass, you can use MDF and chipboard. For high-tech, lighting would be quite appropriate;

  • modern allows you to use chests of unusual shapes, with curved lines, interesting combinations of materials.

Don't rush to throw away your old chest of drawers if it's still strong. A few hours of work, and it can turn into a stylish exclusive product that will fit perfectly into the bedroom interior. The easiest way is to paint an old chest of drawers, and you can use several shades at once, apply a pattern or use the decoupage technique. Another option is to decorate the fronts of the drawers with wallpaper, and after the glue has dried, coat the new finish with acrylic varnish. Instead of wallpaper, you can use fabric or foil.
