Pallets are not returned to warehouses, but must be recycled. Therefore, they are easy to purchase for free or almost nothing.

Principles of working with pallets

You can make your own furniture from full or divided “boxes”. It’s easy to simply put the pallets together, fasten them together, and make a complex structure. Pallets can be used as a frame or a whole product.

The rough look of the wood can be left unchanged. More often the frame is processed with a sander, painted or varnished. The design can be supplemented with legs, wheels, doors, and textile pillows.

Pre-preparation of pallets

Regardless of the type of furniture being manufactured, pallets must undergo preliminary preparation. The process consists of several stages and operations.

1. Visual inspection of the condition. Assess the actual condition of the pallet. If the boards are rotten, have deep cracks or critical deformations, then nothing can be made from it. There is no need to waste time on waste; you need to look for new blanks.
2. Disassembly of parts. If only boards are used from the pallet, the structure is completely disassembled. At the same time, all measures are taken to preserve the integrity of the lumber. You need to know that pallets are made of very high quality boards; they are quite suitable for making furniture for residential premises.
3. Cleaning from dirt. All cutting parts of woodworking tools are very sensitive to sand and other abrasive contaminants; the materials must be thoroughly cleaned from them. In addition, before processing pallets on jointing machines and circular machines, it is necessary to remove nails and other metal hardware.
4. Surface grinding. Sanding must be done using electric tools. Doing it manually is very time-consuming and difficult; in addition, it is impossible to make very curved surfaces smooth. There are many special machines available that provide high quality surfaces. If you cannot buy them for some reason, then you can use an ordinary grinder with a metal disc. The second option is to install a rubber disc on the grinder; cars are polished with such equipment. This method gives acceptable surface cleanliness.
5. Painting board surfaces. The method of finishing lumber depends on the type of furniture and the wishes of the owners. Varnish coating is considered universal; paints hide the beauty of the natural structure of wood. Namely, to emphasize the naturalness of making blizzards, pallets are used.

A single pallet will serve as a table. It is better to further process the frame. For convenience, you can attach wheels.

If there is standard furniture around, then it is better to add legs to the pallet. For this you will need 1 more copy. The wooden “lattice” is simply sawn in half. The resulting parts are attached to the sides at the bottom of the product.

Kitchen or desk

How to fasten pallets together

New industrial pallets are not perfectly straight because they do not need a perfect grind to transport and store loads. So first sand each drawer with coarse sandpaper or a sander. You will remove all defects, get rid of potential splinters and at the same time prepare the surface for painting.

Pallets that have already been used can be washed with warm soapy water and dried outside. After a coat of primer, paint them with stain or special paint for wood and cover them with water-repellent varnish.
