Your personal home orthopedist: 60+ comfortable ideas with a poeng chair in the interior

Advantages and disadvantages

The main feature of this chair is its unusual shape. A smooth bend forms a reliable base that is formed without the use of nails. The maximum loads that the structure can withstand reach 170 kg. The durable frame is complemented by removable upholstery made from a variety of textiles with high performance properties.

The body of the chair is slightly springy, which allows the body to fully relax after a hard day at work. Thanks to the unique design, the back and neck are in the correct position. Among the advantages of this model, ikea notes:

  • A harmonious combination with any interior style.
  • Reliability and durability of the design; the manufacturer provides up to 10 years of warranty on its own products.
  • Environmentally safe, the frame consists of natural birch veneer.
  • Ergonomic body, anatomical back, providing comfortable work and rest.
  • Simple, quick assembly without the use of fasteners.
  • Wide variety of colors and textures.
  • The presence of additional elements, many models of chairs are sold together with footstools or stools made in an identical design.
  • Easy to care for, just remove the covers periodically for washing.
  • Affordable price (4–16 thousand rubles).

The chair has practically no disadvantages. The only negative is a certain psychological discomfort that people with large builds experience. It seems to them that the elegant design is not able to withstand heavy weight. Over time, as the muscles of the back and neck relax, this sensation goes away.

Additional footstools help relieve tension. Such elements are indispensable for young mothers, office workers, and the elderly.

Materials and color

When purchasing a chair, you can choose each element yourself: body, pillow, additional stools. Alternative options will be of the same quality as the original. The final cost depends on the selected parts, so you can significantly reduce the price tag.

Types of gas lifts for office chairs, how the device works

The frame is made from birch veneer and plywood. The material is presented in three colors: white, brown and black-brown. The base of the chair can be made of metal, which has a positive effect on the durability and stability of the structure. Upholstery is available in several options:

  1. For the rocking chair, 100% cotton, Wisland and Stanley fabrics are used.
  2. For other models, a mixture of cotton, polyester, viscose, linen, and Kimstad textiles is used.

Kimstad is a durable canvas with a polymer coating. The only drawback is that the material cannot be washed, only wiping with a damp cloth is permissible. With careful use, it lasts a long time and is resistant to abrasion.

The lounger, the classic swivel Poeng chair, is often trimmed with leather. The Glose variety is made from durable cattle hides; after special processing, the canvas becomes soft and velvety. Smeeding is the result of tanning goatskin. These types of upholstery are not afraid of dirt and sunlight, however, they require proper care.

The finishing of footstools and pillows is made from the same materials, which allows you to create harmonious ensembles with the same design. Most models come with removable covers that are machine washable. As for colors, there are about 15 options, both plain and printed.

An armchair with a plain finish will fit well into the decor of a bedroom or living room. Children's covers are usually made in bright colors and complemented with cheerful pictures.

Some popular chair models

If you are familiar with the products, then you probably know that the range of products here is not limited to one model. For example, they have a lot of rocking chairs and they are all characterized by their own characteristics and differ in shape. Thanks to this, everyone can choose a model to suit their taste and in accordance with the style of the interior. Based on reviews of Poeng rocking chairs, it was possible to determine that the following models are the most popular:

  • "Poeng";
  • "Gulholmen";
  • "Vermde";
  • "Rofield";
  • "Flaxing";
  • Sundvik.

Since the topic of the article is devoted specifically to the first model of the chair on the list presented above, we’ll talk about it in more detail.

Design Features

When designing the famous Poeng chair, the Japanese Naboru Nakamura thought, first of all, that the chair should not be a piece of furniture in which a person simply sits. He wanted to create a chair that would be a source of emotional uplift. So that a person, swaying in it, forgets about stress and tension. This is where the designer saw the meaning of movement and its value. Naboru Nakamura experimentally discovered that a U-shaped chair can rock slightly if its frame is made of molded multi-layer veneer. He also wanted the swing to be graceful. This is how the idea of a rocking chair was born.

The frame is made of multi-layer bent-laminated wood, which makes it possible to slightly absorb movement. This is what causes the swaying sensation. The technology for creating the frame is reliable and, as a result, a very durable and wear-resistant base of the chair.

The seat and backrest are made taking into account the anatomical structure of the spine: the concave part of the thoracic region and the convex part in the lumbar and neck areas. These conditions subtly force the body to sit correctly. The 90 degree angle distributes the load evenly. These little tricks make relaxing in this chair comfortable.

The seat cushion for the chair is made of polyurethane foam. Polyurethane foam is a very resilient, elastic and practical material. Used in the manufacture of mattresses and other sleep products. Thanks to this material, the seat does not sag and continues to maintain its original shape.

Product options

The popularity of Poeng chairs from Ikea is due not only to high quality, but also to the variety of assortment. Today there are several models:

  • Classic option. The design has an anatomical shape, curved legs, and a removable cover. The frame is able to spring, a pair of front stoppers prevents the chair from turning over during lifting. A low footstool would be a great addition.
  • Rocking chair. The main difference from the classic model is the curved legs in the form of an irregular oval. There are no stoppers, but there are comfortable armrests. This modification is especially useful for older people. The design reduces the load on the spine and muscular system. The product is convenient for transportation and is complemented by a removable pillow under the head.
  • Bed. This modification is equipped with rear legs that allow you to take a reclining position. The seat of this model is the softest and thickest, the design is stable.
  • Swivel chair. The properties of the product are no different from the classic version, the main feature is the legs. The supports are made from veneer and a frame; many models are complemented with benches. The swivel round seat is perfect for the office.

Types of poeng chairs

The assortment of poeng is quite diverse. In addition to the classic model, there are other options. Examples of the most popular:

Classic

Standard model with curved legs. A removable cover filled with foam is provided.

Poeng rocking chair

Instead of legs, there are wide runners that look like skis, thanks to which the chair swings steadily and smoothly.

Poeng chair on swivel stand

Office version, has an orthopedic comfortable shape. Instead of curved legs, there is a round rotating base.

Bed

The model is equipped with rear legs that evenly support the body in a reclining state. The seat of this chair is thicker and softer than in other options.

Types of chairs

The chair has undergone changes over time. It is now available in a variety of colors and finishes. But its design is constantly being improved. Some models were not to my liking, while others remained in their original condition:

  • Poeng chair. This is a classic option. Exactly the one the designers worked on.
  • Poeng rocking chair. The legs of this model are elongated and curved upward, forming a loop. The rounding angle of the legs is no more than 35 degrees from the equilibrium position, so there is no danger of the chair tipping over. Despite the already reclined position, the angle between the seat and backrest is still 90 degrees.
  • Poeng footstool. At first glance, a useless thing. But it is a great addition to a classic armchair. When designing the stool, the physiological characteristics of the human body were also taken into account. The stool has an uneven surface and is tilted. The height of one edge is slightly lower than the seat height of a classic chair and is 39 cm, and the height of the other is 36 cm. This slope makes it possible to relax your legs after a hard day at work.
  • Poeng chair for children. Realizing what a miracle designers had invented for adults, manufacturers immediately thought about children. Knowing how important correct posture is for children, parents who had already experienced the comfort of the Poeng chair, without hesitation, bought chairs for their children. This is a classic version in miniature.

Previously, two more models of chairs were produced: an office chair and a lounge chair. But currently there is no information about their production.

Rocking chair IKEA. Impression

Needless to say, IKEA engineers eat their bread for a reason. We already have many items at home purchased from this store and they all mostly evoke positive emotions. There is a sofa, a chest of drawers, a kitchen table, and even a children's railway. So far we like everything.

The rocking chair was no exception. It's a pleasure to sit in it. Much nicer than in my good old Soviet chair. It's amazing that I used to find it comfortable. I remember when sitting in it, I had to put a cushion made of a folded blanket under my back. Otherwise, the back would “sag.” You can't sit in this position for long.

There was no need to add anything to the IKEA chair. The design of the backrest already provides the required curvature. As soon as you sit down in a chair, you immediately feel how your spine “sighs with relief,” so to speak.

People of average and below average height will especially appreciate the rocking chair. They can rest their head on the headrest and calmly continue to look forward. This way you can watch TV, work on the computer and just read.

For people slightly taller than average height, the standard headrest does not help much. If you put your head on it, the direction of your gaze is 45 degrees to the ceiling. Of course, you can squint your eyes and look at the monitor on the table, but you won’t work like that for long. There is no need to talk about the keyboard that lies on your lap. She completely disappears from sight.

Thus, I personally have to hold my head “in weight”, or put an additional pillow under the back of my head. The latter is not very convenient: if you forget to get up from your chair, the pillow ends up on the floor. I'll have to see if it's possible to somehow increase the height of the backrest.

The design itself looks quite reliable. The chair allows you to swing with a fairly large amplitude, but in order to tumble backwards you need to make a special effort.

The seat material is attached to the wooden parts of the structure with many small brackets. At first, of course, there is a suspicion that he might break away. But the manufacturer states that the permissible weight of a carcass that can fall into a chair without consequences is 170 kg. Personally, I only weigh a little over half that. Therefore, I can easily swing while holding my wife and child. The total will be about 170 kg. Although... 87 + 64 + 21 = 172 kg. – no, you shouldn’t take that risk! Someone in our family clearly needs to lose a couple of kilos... I even know who it is :).

If there is some hard covering on the floor, for example, tiles, parquet, then it is better to glue thick, wide tape to the runners. Otherwise, when rocking, the chair will make an unpleasant sound.

It is especially convenient that the seat cover is removable and washable. Therefore, even the white color of the cover will not cause many problems.

The overall dimensions of the chair are quite impressive. I'm afraid this pleasure is not for small apartments. The question immediately arises: how to transport it in a car, for example, to a dacha.

As an answer, IKEA designers provided the ability to fold the back of the chair. It is enough to unscrew the two bolts on the seat (see photo above) and loosen the bolts where the backrest is attached to the armrests. The backrest tilts forward and the chair can easily fit in the trunk of a regular car.

Equipment and assembly

When disassembled, the size of the chair is small; the packaging with the furniture frame weighs only 2 kg. The pillow is supplied separately folded. Typically, the structure is assembled independently, using the instructions that are included with the product. No additional tools are required for the job. The process goes like this:

  • The contents are removed from the box. Orthopedic lamellas are inserted into special slots in pairs of curved parts. The elements are fixed with screws.
  • Installing the seat involves placing the remaining slats in the fabric base. The parts are secured using L-shaped strips and screws.
  • The back and seat elements are connected together. The main frame is assembled from L- and L-shaped parts. They need to be secured to form an irregularly shaped oval.
  • Parts that swing are fixed with confirmations. The cross member is mounted between the side elements.
  • All fasteners are checked and tightened if necessary.

Popular Ikea chair-beds - design and design features

Anyone can handle the process of assembling the chair; on average, the work takes about 15 minutes. When disassembled, the model has minimal dimensions, so it can even be transported on public transport.

The Poeng chair from Ikea is very popular all over the world. The main advantages of the furniture are anatomical backrest, variety of models, colors, durability, and affordable cost. The designs are easy to use, have an attractive appearance, and help you fully relax and unwind.

Frame - how it is structured, what materials it is made of

The frame is designed quite original:

  • The sidewalls are made in the form of a square with rounded corners. Also, the sidewalls only have 3 edges. One is a support, the top one is an armrest. The central edge serves as an adapter between them. The rear edge of the armrest bar is curved upward, merging with the backrest;
  • Limiter. It is attached between the two bases of the sidewalls along their rear part. Thanks to this element, the support takes on the appearance of a loop, which is highly stable;
  • Side back slats. On each side they are made up of two parts with a wavy profile. This allows you to create a frame with orthopedic properties;
  • Cross members. They are attached horizontally between the sides of the backrest, maintaining a certain pitch. Some of them are straight, and some are concave;
  • Sitting. Manufactured in one piece.

The traditional material is molded laminated veneer made from natural birch. This type of wood has high ductility. It can be bent without damaging the structural fibers. To improve flexibility, the wood is steamed. After bending, the parts are fixed until they take the desired shape. During the process, the material is treated with additional compounds that increase the elasticity of wood fiber. Among the large number of models you can find options with a metal body. But this is rather an exception. A number of other forms have their own characteristics.

Despite the airiness and apparent fragility of the design, the manufacturer guarantees the ability of the chair to withstand loads of at least 180 kg. As the most convincing argument, this chair is covered by a 25-year warranty given by the manufacturer.

Design Features

At first glance, the poeng seems fragile and unstable due to the lack of hind legs, however, this impression is deceptive. The special shape of the backrest perfectly follows the contours of the human body, thanks to which the effect of maximum relaxation is achieved. The main feature is the absence of rear load-bearing legs; stability is ensured by a special curved frame design. A durable frame made of veneer (most often birch) can easily support a weight of up to one hundred and seventy kilograms.

The technology for creating a frame from bent veneer is quite labor-intensive. Birch laminated veneer is used most often; it is this wood that can best be bent without losing strength. First, the workpieces are treated with steam, after which they are given the desired shape. The blanks are fixed in this position and treated with special chemical compounds to achieve better elasticity.

Advantages of Ikea chairs in the interior of homes and offices

Poeng is intended to promote a comfortable rest for a person who is tired and temporarily wants to relax the muscles of his body and take the stress off his bones.

Buyers appreciated the convenience and benefits of the poeng chair back in 1975, when the design began to be actively launched on the market. It immediately became a sign of luxury and refined taste of the owners.

An ideal addition to all varieties of poeng would be a small stool or a special footrest. With their help, you can relieve tension from the lower part of your body. Such benches are an indispensable item for nursing mothers, as well as tired office workers.

Advantages of the poeng design:

  • Orthopedic component;
  • A wide variety of types, represented by models from classic to office, as well as children's versions;
  • Rich color range of available models;
  • A variety of fabric textures for seating, which helps create a fresh accent in the interior;
  • Undeniable environmental friendliness, because the chair is made of natural birch veneer;
  • Unpretentiousness and ease of care are ensured by the fact that the design has only smooth, sloping parts, and you can always wash the removable covers;
  • The pricing policy of many enterprises allows you to buy products of different prices.

The bulk of customer feedback is positive, and there are practically no negative ones. Sometimes you can come across some reviews and complaints about the appearance itself, but this is most likely a psychological factor, explained by the fact that some people are not ready for change. People with a lot of weight are wary of using these structures because they seem too fragile to them. However, having overcome fear and relaxed in the chair, everyone understands and immediately appreciates the beauty of the new design.

A little history

There are two versions of the origin of this miracle chair.

Version number one: originally from Japan

It is believed that 40 years ago, Japanese designer Noboru Nakamura, being in a philosophical mood and trying to comprehend the wisdom of the Celestial Empire through relaxation, invented a unique design.

Unique design and ergonomics of the chair

Version number two: the rich have their own quirks

IKEA founder Ignvard Kamprad is known throughout the world as the most frugal person among the modern rich. Despite his huge earnings, he invariably stays in the cheapest hotels and drives around in a well-worn Volvo. But the funniest fact from his life is that he has a favorite chair, which Kamprad has not parted with for years. It was this model that formed the basis of the poeng chair, which is now sold in all stores around the world and is in great demand among customers.

Refined simplicity and calm beauty provide lasting comfort

Textile covers are suitable for any interior. They can be chosen from a wide range of fabrics and designs.

There is no indisputable evidence in favor of one or another legend, so both versions have the right to life. In any case, the chair was invented forty years ago and has no analogues to this day.

Upholstery and filling

The sitting experience is significantly improved by using a removable mattress with soft padding. Such covers can be washed in automatic machines as usual. It is recommended to choose options with a headrest cushion. When selecting fabrics for sewing a cover, preference is given to high-quality fabrics with natural bases:

  • Cotton. Body-comfortable, breathable fabric. Not recommended for use in its pure form. He will quickly sit down, covered in pellets. Choose options with the addition of synthetics. But for the fabric to remain cotton, the synthetic fiber content should not exceed 35%;
  • Matting. Natural material with high strength. Linen, cotton, and wool are used for production. The structure is embossed with a pronounced characteristic interweaving of threads. Excellent air permeability and good moisture absorption. But the color palette is rather poor. The colors are boring, without pattern. Matting is painted extremely rarely. At best, they are whitened;
  • Microfiber. Very comfortable material with a soft fleecy surface. When touched, associations arise with trimmed fur. At the same time, the fabric is difficult to care for.

The role of filler is most often performed by:

  • Polyurethane foam;
  • Foam rubber;
  • Polyester wadding;
  • Sintepon;
  • Synthetic fluff.

Budget grades of materials with short shelf life are used as filler. The covers are easy to change - they are sold in large quantities separately from the frames. Still, the budget orientation of the model is noticeable to the naked eye.

Characteristics

A period of time of 40 years could not but affect the production of Poeng chairs. Time passed, technologies changed, and all advanced achievements were used to improve the legendary chair.

Three types of wood are used to make the frame:

  • Beech veneer looks very stylish . Beech veneer has shades of pink, red, and brown.
  • Oak veneer is recognizable to all customers. Oak veneer shades have a cool brown undertone.
  • Birch veneer is decorated with a patterned unique design. The color scheme of birch covers the entire spectrum of yellow. Birch wood is more flexible, so manufacturers prefer to work with it first.

The production of a form of multi-layer adhesive veneer occurs by gluing veneer packages with quickly hardening glue in molds heated to 110-135°C. At this moment, the workpieces are given those graceful curves of the frame. The next step is painting the veneer with stain. Stain makes it possible to even out the natural color of the wood, giving the wood richness and depth of color.

The final stage in the preparation of veneer is coating with transparent acrylic varnish. First of all, the task of the varnish is to reliably protect the wood from moisture, mold and rot. And secondly, give it smoothness and shine. Another advantage of acrylic varnish is its environmental friendliness.

The fabric frame of the chair (this is the part on which the seat cushion is placed on top) is made of 100% polypropylene . Fabric made from polypropylene threads is widely used for making ropes, carpets, blankets, and upholstery fabrics. The main advantage of polypropylene is strength and abrasion resistance.

Ikea offers a huge selection of seat cushions in its stores. And it's not just the variety of colors and textures:

  • Covering 100% cotton . Undoubtedly, pure cotton does not electrify, is pleasant to the touch, and is a hypoallergenic material. In addition, as of September 1, 2015, Ikea uses only cotton from more environmentally friendly sources in the production of its products. But cotton also has a lot of disadvantages. It wrinkles easily, quickly loses its original appearance, and is subject to shrinkage after washing. But, despite the shortcomings, children's chairs are made only with cotton seat cushions.
  • Covering 100% polyester . It is clear that synthetic fabric will be more wear-resistant. It will be better to retain color and shape. Fabrics with the addition of synthetic fibers are elastic, do not absorb odors, and repel water well.
  • Mixed fabrics are also available Thus, cotton adds breathable properties to synthetic fibers. And polyester makes the fabric more resistant to abrasion.
  • Morocco . Dyed cattle leather. Usually the surface is decorated with a small carved pattern. Products made from morocco are not easily soiled and prevent the appearance of minor scratches.

Buyers' opinion

Analyzing customer reviews, the conclusion arises that Poeng is the only comfortable chair whose appearance all of humanity has been waiting for. In large families they fight for it. Many people make it their workplace. And yet, reading the reviews, you can highlight a number of advantages and disadvantages.

Pros:

  • very comfortable chair. Great for rest and relaxation;
  • not heavy . Easy to move from place to place while cleaning;
  • an indispensable item for pregnant women and people suffering from back problems;
  • a favorite option for young mothers. It’s convenient to feed and rocking to sleep is a pleasure;
  • easy to disassemble and does not create problems during transportation;
  • durable. Some reviews were written after 10 years of use.

Minuses:

  • people of non-standard height (usually too tall) note discomfort in the neck area;
  • mothers with older babies no longer fit together in a chair , which undoubtedly upsets both;
  • birch veneer is marked as easily soiled. And it is not recommended in families with small children;
  • After five or more years, consumers notice that the varnish becomes thinner or wears off completely.

Disadvantages of the IKEA Poeng chair

Among the shortcomings, only two can be highlighted.

The first is the high price. Alas, shelling out 13 thousand rubles for such an optional piece of furniture as a rocking chair can become an unaffordable luxury for many. After all, for some people this amount represents half of their monthly salary, or even more than half.

If a family is barely making ends meet, and a respected father of the family suddenly appears on the doorstep with such an acquisition in his hands, then even the most patient “other half” can lose their nerve. Of course, you can buy a chair with a thinner and therefore less comfortable seat. But even in the cheapest configuration, a new thing will take more than 10,000 rubles out of the budget.

The second drawback is that the rocking chair is not adapted to people with above average height. I don’t consider myself too tall, and even then I experience some inconveniences. How even taller people will feel is anyone's guess. I think they won't be very comfortable.

And finally, a very important caveat. Be sure to keep this information in mind if you use any rocking chair, not just Poeng

The fact is that if one of your household members accidentally stands next to the chair, putting his toes or tail under the runners (if it is a cat or a dog), and you suddenly sway in the chair, then... you know, it would be better not to do this was. At best, you'll severely pinch someone's toes. At worst, there may be a fracture, fragmentation and other equally terrible consequences.

The peculiarity of the rocking chair is that it is impossible to stop it instantly. Leaning back in your chair, you can easily cripple the people you care about most. That's why we have a rule at home: if someone is sitting in a rocking chair, the others don't come close to it.
