Often, due to many circumstances, it is not possible to install a standard door. In this article we will tell you how to decorate a doorway without a door with curtains beautifully in different rooms and design styles.

Reasons for using curtains and functions performed

Sometimes ordinary doors do not fit into the interior. This occurs for various reasons: a small room, the difficulty of installing standard doors for an arch with a non-standard frame. Then the owners of apartments and houses are interested: how can they decorate the doorway? For this, curtains of various types are used.

Does your home have curtains on doorways?

Not really

Functions of a curtain installed in a doorway:

  • decoration of the entrance to a small room. An open door leaf will take up a lot of space, and the material will allow you to save free space;
  • if the size and shape of the arches in the door space are non-standard, they are decorated with curtains, because making doors is difficult and expensive;
  • if old doors are installed, then they can be hidden behind beautiful curtains, for example, muslin or hourglass. They are often used to decorate glass doors to make the atmosphere more comfortable.

Interesting! You can sew interior curtains on the doorway with your own hands, which allows you to save on repairs and add originality.

Arched cornices

The arch curtain has been selected, now you need to decide how to secure it to the opening. You can purchase a special cornice that follows the semicircular shape of the top. For sale there are forged designs or a simple plastic version. Sometimes curtains on straight eaves, installed above the opening or on a straight part, when semicircular windows peek out from behind the curtains, suit the style of the room.

If arched cornices are not a decorative element, you can do without them and attach the curtains to the arched windows with Velcro. There are many options for installing fasteners; consult with the manager of the shopping center, he will choose the best method for your home. If the interior opening is located in a main wall, you can hang curtains on both sides, and a kind of vestibule is formed in front of the room.

A cornice is not needed for every curtain on an arched window and not for all rooms. The kitchen arch can be decorated with threads attached to concrete, or with light fabric with Velcro. For massive expensive curtains, of course, an appropriate device is required that will be included in the ensemble of the opening.

Pros and cons of using

Decorating an interior passage with fabric without doors has positive and negative sides.

prosMinuses
+ cozy and unusual room design- less strength compared to conventional doors
+ low cost- lets in odors and noises

Disadvantages do not allow use everywhere. For example, in the kitchen due to the abundance of odors or in the bedroom due to noise. But lovers of cozy interiors have adapted to avoid negative features: good hoods are installed in kitchens, and soundproofing curtains in bedrooms.

Advantages and disadvantages

The disadvantages of arched windows include two of their features:

  • Almost everyone thinks that curtains for arched windows should exactly replicate those that hang in palaces. At the same time, few people think that such a design will require a lot of money, special materials and special tools. Sewing curtains like this is practically impossible either at home or in the nearest studio.
  • Most people are sure that non-standard arched windows and curtains must be unusual and exclusive.

In fact, in most cases, any arch can be decorated with a standard straight cornice, to which a simple curtain is attached. It is rare to come up with non-standard recipes. This property can be considered an advantage.

The second plus is that the arched corner will never go unnoticed, because... this element is self-sufficient and unusual, practically does not need additional decorations and accents to attract attention to it.

There are three ways to attach a cornice to an arch. Let's describe them in more detail.

Types of curtains

Various types of curtains are used for interior openings: drapes, curtains, blinds, hourglass, roller, Roman, Japanese, muslin.

Drapes and curtains

Classic drapery curtains in the doorway are suitable for many interiors. They have many colors and textures.

Blinds

Blinds are often used on doorways, especially on glass doors. They differ in three opening methods: horizontal, vertical or pleated. They allow you to close windows well instead of standard curtains and glazed door leaves. The products add lightness, freshness and spaciousness.

Hourglass

The sand-shaped curtain in the opening is fixed at the top and bottom of the glazing. In the middle, the fabric is covered with a decorative element, obtaining a shape reminiscent of an hourglass.

Rolled

Roller blinds are most often installed on glazed interior openings. Due to their design, they cannot be mounted separately on the box, but they will provide beautiful protection from the light of the balcony.

Roman

Compared to roller blinds, you can install Roman blinds for a doorway without a wooden panel above the doorway. Roman is combined with a variety of styles due to its elegance and functionality.

Japanese

It is not uncommon for Japanese screens to be used on doors and windows instead of curtains. They have several panels that are inserted into a mechanism similar to a sliding wardrobe. The Japanese curtain in the interior is easy to distinguish from other screens - it has from 2 to 8 movable shutters, depending on the area being covered.

Kiseya

Original thread curtains for a doorway are often used for a house or apartment. Modern curtains made of threads can have different looks: regular threads on the curtain, plush, curled, rainbow. Also, thread curtains in the interior are complemented with glass beads, beads, and feathers, allowing you to incorporate them into an unusual style.

Many people are interested in how to hang thread curtains so that they do not interfere with the passage. Many people hook them on one side with wooden or plastic clips. But you can make a symmetrical structure by securing it equally on both sides.

Curtains for arched windows

Semicircular windows themselves create the style of the room, now you need to choose the right curtains for arched windows, but designing an arched window is not an easy task. You can install a regular cornice so that the rectangular part of the opening is covered with curtains, while the semicircular top remains open. If you want to close the entire window, you can hang any curtains on the straight part, and cover the semicircular parts with special inserts, like a fan.

It’s up to you to decide which curtains to choose for arched windows. Only designers do not recommend installing massive structures with an abundance of folds and folds. Small ruffles and fringe will be a sufficient decorative element. There is no need to distract attention from the beauty of the opening; the frame should unobtrusively emphasize the architectural design. Even blinds for arched windows may be a good option.

The best fabrics for curtains will be soft, flowing materials. If semicircular windows face south, give preference to fabrics that do not fade in the sun. When decorating your kitchen, remember that grease has the ability to settle on all surfaces.

You can choose curtains for an arched window with a dirt-repellent effect, or look for a model that can be easily removed and washed. A good option for curtains would be:

  • organza;
  • tulle;
  • linen;
  • chintz.

Selecting curtains for different rooms

In the living room or hall

Installing curtains in the living room adds coziness and tenderness. They serve not only for decoration, but also for functional separation. In the classics, curtains for an arch can save you money on ordering doors of a non-standard size. For convenience, the material is hooked up with lambrequins with fringes.

In the hallway and corridor

Hanging curtains in the hallway is an interesting design move. They will transform the house, add style and comfort.

To the bedroom

Curtains for bedrooms should be gentle, muted shades. This will allow you to relax before bed. You can decorate them with glass beads and iridescent threads.

To the nursery

For children's curtains on the door frame, various types are used: regular muslin, rainbow, with beads, fabric with images of cartoons and favorite activities.

To the dressing room

The modern design of the doorway of the dressing room is done with dense models. The curtain should not let in light rays and allow you to see the contents of the shelves.

To the kitchen

A curtain has been used instead of a kitchen door for a very long time. In the present kitchen, thread or textile fabrics are hung. It is important to choose a material that absorbs kitchen aromas less, and also install a strong hood.

To the pantry

The design of the pantry, as well as the dressing room, should hide many things from prying eyes. Therefore, dense monochrome materials or with a thematic pattern are selected.

Color preferences

To advantageously decorate an arch in a corridor, take a closer look at curtains made of lightweight material in a peach or light green shade. If you prefer options made from wooden beads or bamboo, pay attention to the color scheme of natural light shades, thereby you will refresh or even completely transform the decor in the apartment.

Selecting the type of canvas to match the style

The selected type of curtains for the door depends on the design. The main styles for using curtains are classic, hi-tech, minimalism and ethnic. Incorporation into other styles is possible, but you will need to carefully weigh everything: find a harmonious texture and range.

Classic

For a classic style, voluminous curtains are used, complemented by tassels and bows. They should be positioned symmetrically and secured on both sides with decorative elements.

Interesting! Symmetrical hanging is used not only in a free box, but also on installed wooden doors.

Thick classic curtains will create a luxurious environment and protect from cold drafts. With a large box, you can hang several types of material: dense and light. Moreover, their flowers should differ by several tones in order to emphasize the multilayer structure. Adding a lambrequin will visually enlarge the apartment.

Palettes suitable for classic style: white, beige, blue, green, brown. Tones are selected in a rich range. Gilded patterns can be embroidered for decoration.

Minimalism, hi-tech

Modern minimalist styles should not be burdened with lambrequins and fringe. Therefore, ordinary plain fabrics, plastic blinds or thread muslin are suitable. The design does not require symmetry, so one fabric can cover the entire passage.

Minimalism and hi-tech use the same basic colors: white, gray, black. For minimalism you will need matte monochromatic textures, while in high-tech you can use gray ones with a metallic shimmer.

Ethnic

Ethnic stylistics can be framed in various types. For example, luxurious curtains with lambrequins and fringe will suit the oriental theme. In addition to symmetrical placement, asymmetrical engagement with different lengths on the right and left sides is suitable.

For lovers of Japanese themes, movable panels are installed instead of doors. It is important that the width of the box is sufficient for 2-4 panels, otherwise it will not be possible to get the Japanese atmosphere.

French Provence and country welcome an abundance of textiles. Therefore, you can frame the entrance with a checkered or floral pattern.

Preparing to sew curtains

First of all, prepare all the materials necessary for this work:

  • the main fabric from which your curtains will be made;
  • fabric for lining, if you plan to make one;
  • required thread color;
  • centimeter or measuring ruler;
  • pencil;
  • a special Velcro tape used for draping fabric;
  • large sheets of white paper (you can use a roll of old wallpaper) for the pattern;
  • spirit level;
  • Velcro tape designed for the top of the window.

But before you go shopping, measure your arched window for which you plan to sew curtains. But you need to measure correctly:

  • We measure the length from the very center of the arch (this is its highest point) to the level to which you want your product to be;
  • to buy the correct piece of fabric, add 15 centimeters from the bottom and two and a half centimeters from the top to the already measured length (these will be your seam allowances);
  • and in order to find out the length of the lining fabric cut, add 10 and 2.5 centimeters from the bottom and top, respectively, to the length of the future product;

  • now you need to find out the width of the widest point, let's call it W;
  • to understand how much fabric is needed for lining the width of the product, you need to know the width of the main part of the product;

  • Usually, to decorate a window, you need two curtains, the width of the fabric for which is determined by the following formula: the width of one curtain*2/the width of the fabric used. The resulting number must be rounded to the nearest whole number;
  • and the last thing you need to measure is the amount of fabric for the lining and the curtain itself. To do this, multiply the length of the cut by the number of required widths
  • finished product.

The diagram shown in the photo shows all the stages clearly. That's it, when the preparation stage is over, you can proceed to the next one - creating patterns.

Design tips from the experts

Curtains on doors and doorways are always matched to the color scheme of the room. In order for the curtains to harmonize with the decor, it is necessary to select them to match the color and texture of the window frame. There are some tricks to change your perception:

  • to eliminate excess width, hang deep and dark tones;
  • for little ones, hang simple curtains so that drapery and complex designs do not burden the decor;
  • To visually enlarge the apartment, lightweight fabrics (organza, veil) in light shades are used. Bright colors, vertical stripes and floral prints also help to expand;
  • for elegance, install curtains with lace and double-type curtains;
  • The size of the print can visually increase or decrease the area: large - reduces, and small - increases.

It is important to install strong curtains because the curtains will move frequently during use. To minimize interaction with woven fabric, hooking devices are installed so that the fabric can be put aside for a long time and pass unhindered. For long service, compacted fabrics are selected to prevent snags and other mechanical damage.

Curtain arch pattern

The easiest way is to take your favorite arched curtain pattern on the Internet and copy everything exactly. But if the sizes don’t suit you, you can make the pattern yourself.

A piece of fabric should be folded in half widthwise and the highest point of the future arc should be marked in the center. Then from this point you need to draw a smooth arc to the side ends. Make a neat cut along the marked line. All! The pattern is ready. All that remains is to carefully process the cut, drape it and hang the finished curtain on the cornice.
