How to increase the height of a bed with your own hands

How to increase the height of a bed | Make your home comfortable if age or health fails

When on bed rest, we recommend making the bed higher.
It will be more convenient for you and easier for the person caring for you: your back will not get so tired. Here are three options for how to increase the height of the bed. If you are undergoing physiotherapy treatment, you should check whether the bed can withstand the additional load. How to increase the height of a metal bed

Since drilling and attaching metal or wood to a metal bed is difficult, it is easier to place the bed legs in small wooden boxes. This method of stand can be used for any bed, especially if you need to give the bed its original height.

Material

A. Base - plywood 9 mm x 90 mm x 90 mm, 4 pcs. B. Smaller sides - plywood 9 mm x 72 mm x 1 50 mm, 8 pcs. C. Large sides - plywood 9 mm x 90 mm x 150 mm, 8 pcs. D. Block - strong wood, area corresponding to stand x required height. E. Forged wood screws No. 8 x 25 mm. Fastening with glue and screws.

Operating procedure

1. Drill holes for base A and sides C. 2. Drill auxiliary holes in sides B with a diameter equal to half the diameter of the screw. 3. Attach sides B to sides C. 4. Attach assembled sides B and C to base A. 5. Sand and paint to match the bed or seal. 6. Cut the blocks to the required size.

Wooden stands for wooden beds

This way to increase the height of the bed is simple and effective, but take the time to choose the material. The wood must be well dried so as not to split under the weight of the bed itself and the person lying on it. Glued sheet plywood is suitable for this purpose.

Material

A. Extensions - well-dried wood, diameter approximately equal to the diameter of the bed leg, length - the height to which you need to raise the bed + 150 mm, 4 pcs. B. Nuts and bolts - approximately 5 mm, 8 pcs. C. Washers - as large in diameter as possible so that the wood does not split when the nuts are tightened.

Operating procedure

1. Drill holes for bolts in the bed legs and extensions A. 2. Bolt the extensions to the bed legs. 3. Paint to match the bed or cover with impregnation.

Metal stands for wooden beds

The stand made from angle steel or angle aluminum is very durable. It can be installed quickly.

Material

A. Extensions - sheet iron or sheet aluminum, dimensions are calculated in the same way as the dimensions of a wooden extension, 4 pcs. B. Nuts and bolts - about 5 mm in diameter, 16 pcs. C. Large washers - 32 pcs.

Operating procedure

1. Round all edge corners of each A extension. 2. Drill the bed legs and A extensions to fit the nuts. 3. Bolt the extensions to the bed. 4. Paint to match the bed.

TABLE OVER THE BED

This table can be made by anyone who has a good workshop and the necessary tools. The table is designed for a wide variety of activities and work. It can be equipped with a vice, electrical outlets, a lamp and used as a workbench.

To determine the size of wooden parts, you need to know the width of the bed and the distance from the tabletop to the floor.

MaterialA. Tabletop - plywood 9 mm x 400 mm x length. B. Backstrap - softwood 10mm x 50mm x length. C. Side strips - soft wood 10 mm x 50 mm x 390 mm, 2 pcs. D. Legs - soft wood 10mm x 45mm x 45mm x height, 4 pcs. E. Long Top Rail - Softwood 12mm x 75mm x Length, 2 pcs. F. Short Top Rail - Softwood 12mm x 75mm x 310mm x 2 G. Bottom Rail - Softwood 12mm x 75mm x 310mm, 2 pcs.

We do not give any assembly instructions here, as an experienced craftsman will know how to assemble all the parts. You can determine the size of the table top, back bar, legs and long crossbars by calculating the length of the table top based on the width of the bed, and the height of the table based on the position of the person in the bed. The length of the tabletop is equal to the width of the bed + 200 mm, the height of the table (to the inside) is the measurement taken when the person is in the bed and sitting in the working position.

How to make your bed taller with footrests

Choosing the optimal footrests. They can be made of metal, plastic or wood. Plastic ones have the lowest cost, but their service life is also short. Footrests made of wood or metal are more durable and resistant to increased loads. Wooden elements often have the most attractive appearance, but are also the most expensive.

The sizes of the footrests vary from 2.5 cm to 30 cm. It is necessary to use a tape measure to measure the height to which the bed is supposed to be raised. Then, taking into account the measurements, you can select the footrests of the desired height.

If it is not possible to find stands of the required size, you can use plastic footrests that can be inserted into each other to obtain a comfortable bed height. The packaging in which the footrests are placed should indicate the weight they can support. You must add up the weight of the mattress and the weight of the people who will sleep on the bed. The higher the weight of the mattress, the stronger the supports needed.

Why pay attention to this?

Many people know about the importance of choosing a mattress and pay attention to the design of furniture. However, few people think about what the optimal height of the bed from the floor should be. After all, this indicator is important for proper sleep. Each person has his own height and preferences, so comfortable conditions must be created individually. It has been noticed that an incorrect distance from the floor to the top of the bed can harm well-being and even health.

For example, older people often have problems with the joint system. If the height of the bed from the floor to the sleeping place is lower than it should be, they feel discomfort. The process of getting up and going to bed takes a long time. Moreover, an unsuccessful movement can cause injury. Furniture for a child also needs to be chosen with care. When getting up from a high bed, babies can fall and get hurt. They also like to indulge a little before bed, which is dangerous on a high bed.

Physiological characteristics of a person also matter. For short people, the maximum height of the bed is selected taking into account comfortable use. If a person sits on the edge, he should touch the floor with his feet. When buying furniture, they also take into account the characteristics of the room in which it will be located. So, in small rooms with low ceilings it is not recommended to install a loft bed or a bunk structure. The short distance from the ceiling to the sleeping bed causes discomfort. It can cause shortness of breath and shortness of breath in any person.

How to increase the height of a metal bed

Making holes and attaching metal or wood to a metal bed is a pain, so it's easier to increase the height of the bed by placing the legs in small wooden boxes. This method is suitable for any bed, especially if you need to create the original height of the bed.

It is very easy to make the bed higher in this way, but it is important to carefully consider the choice of material. The wood must be completely dry so that it cannot split under the weight of the bed and the person sitting on it. For such cases, glued sheet plywood is a suitable choice.

BEDTIME TABLE FOR ACTIVITIES

This bedside table is wide and durable enough, which means it is convenient for doing any kind of work. For some, a recess in the working surface of the table will help, as it will allow you to sit closer to the table and provide support for your hands. The notch is shown in the figure with a dotted line. It is impossible to recommend exact dimensions as they depend on the height of the bed and the body characteristics of the person sitting in the bed. Determine them yourself.

Material A. Table top - plywood 9 mm x 400 mm x 600 mm. B. Long table top strip - softwood 12mm x 50mm x 600mm. C. Short table top strip - softwood 12mm x 50mm x 200mm. D. Load-bearing slab - plywood 9 mm x 400 mm x 760 mm (dimensions are relative). E. Short bars - dense wood 25 mm x 25 mm x 350 mm, 2 pcs. F. Long bars - dense wood 25 mm x 25 mm x 760 mm (dimensions are relative), 2 pcs. G. Side walls - plywood 9 mm x 200 mm x 760 mm, 2 pcs. N. Side bars - dense wood 25 mm x 25 mm x 150 mm, 4 pcs. I. Base - plywood 9 mm x 400 mm x 760 mm. And. Skids - dense wood 25 mm x 40 mm x 760 mm, 2 pcs.

Fastening with glue and screws.

Operating procedure1. Fasten parts A, D, J, I, as shown in the figure. 2. Attach the sides to the base plate D. 3. Round the edges of the runners as shown in the picture. 4. Attach base I to complete the base plate assembly. 5. Attach the tabletop. 6. Sand and paint.

The bedroom is perhaps the most desirable place in the house, where a person’s thoughts and feet rush after a delicious dinner or a hearty lunch on the weekend. But in order for your sleep to be deep and relaxing, you need to worry about organizing your resting place in advance. In addition to a peaceful environment, silence, special lighting and fresh air, there should be a comfortable bed, which will be the key to a sound and healthy sleep.

Needless to say, sleep plays a very important role in a person’s life, and a person’s performance, mood and health depend on how the night’s rest goes. Of course, there are no trifles when organizing a place to sleep; they create the overall atmosphere, but today we will talk about the most important and large-sized attribute of any bedroom - the bed.

DIY bed made from construction pallets

The most budget-friendly material from which you can make an original bed is construction pallets. They can be purchased at a bargain price; the only thing is that the wood will be second-rate, but if you plan to decorate the bedroom in a loft or rustic style, then such texture and knotty wood will only be a decoration.

Despite the cheapness and strength of this material, it is worth remembering that it is not suitable for point loads, which means that you cannot jump on it. Also, second-grade wood is very sensitive to moisture, so it is better not to install such a bed in an unheated and damp dacha.

In all other cases, this is an endless field for creativity, because such material is very malleable, you just have to apply your hands and imagination. How the craftsman did it in the next video.

Bed made of boards and timber

Making a bed from natural wood is a worthy option to get a reliable structure that will be both a wonderful place to sleep and a decoration for the room. It goes without saying that if you order such a product from a workshop, it will cost a pretty penny, but you can go the other way - make it yourself.

Fortunately, in our time, purchasing lumber is not a problem, but you need to remember that not all tree species may have a sufficient margin of safety for such creativity. And if we are talking about saving, then the most budget-friendly and reliable option would be larch and pine.

It is worth noting that such wood is easy to process and, with the bare minimum of tools, any amateur and even a girl can create a bed.

Bed made of MDF, chipboard, OSB, chipboard or plywood

Budget furniture is made from MDF or laminated chipboard in factories, but if you set a goal, you can make such a design yourself, which will be much cheaper, and the range of materials can be expanded. The modern market offers a large selection of slabs and modifications that have proven themselves in the creation of furniture. The only thing that cannot be done is to save money when choosing the thickness of the material, because the design of the bed must withstand a fairly large load.

If you decide to do such an experiment, then first you need to make a detailed drawing and think in advance about the position of the parts on a sheet of chipboard, laminated chipboard, OSB or plywood (furniture board) of the required size. This will help avoid errors when cutting and reduce material waste. In the case when there is no jigsaw at home, then it is better to send the material to a special workshop for cutting, which can do this carefully, and if it is chipboard, laminated chipboard, then process the ends with a special edge.

To ensure maximum strength of the bed when creating the frame and legs, the authors of Novate.Ru advise using natural wood or metal construction, then the bed will last a long time. If the first 2 materials do not require additional finishing, then experiments with the rest also involve creative work, because the bed should also be beautiful.

If it was thick plywood, then it can be opened with varnish or painted in a suitable color. Often craftsmen cover all the parts with fabric or leatherette, sometimes they make a soft carriage screed. They like to decorate the headboard in this style when the bedroom interior is decorated in a palace style.

Bed legs - a small but such an important detail

  • "What is a part"
  • "Varieties"
  • "A little about renovation"
  • "How to get rid of sound"

According to many consumers, furniture fittings do not deserve special attention. And they are wrong. Take, for example, furniture legs. They are responsible for the stability of furniture items, in particular beds, for their reliability and even service life. Currently, these parts are presented on the market in a fairly wide range. They come in different types and purposes.

Bed on the podium

Recently, creating bed podiums has become a fairly common hobby among owners of small apartments. And this is understandable, because in this case two birds with one stone are killed, and the sleeping area turns out to be quite spacious and the storage system is ready.

Moreover, to create it you can use any material, including elements of old furniture or shelves and cabinets. Sometimes part of the room is covered with a podium, and then you get a multifunctional area with a wonderful sleeping area and an office/living room or playground for a child. There are a lot of options, it all depends on the purpose of the room and the need to seal the living area.

DIY loft bed

For small apartments, the loft bed design has become a real salvation. This is a very convenient option for arranging a children’s room, when a work/play area is organized below, and a sleeping area is located on the upper tier.

An attic bed will also come in handy when decorating a tiny studio apartment, then the floor space is usually occupied by the living room-dining room, and a full bed is installed in the attic. If it is possible to allocate a room, then creating a loft bed will help create two rooms at once - a dressing room/office and a bedroom.

Important:

In the case when a loft bed is created in a niche where there is no window or large free space, forced ventilation should be installed.

Advantages and disadvantages

The bedroom on the second tier has the following advantages:

  • A stunning space saver.
  • An excellent solution for the parents’ bedroom combined with the nursery (more ideas here).
  • Cosy.
  • It is warmer in winter, and drafts are not a problem.
  • Getting in and out of bed is a little exercise.

  • Difficult for older people.
  • In the double version, the long side is most often leaned against the wall - one person will interfere with the other by climbing over it.
  • It is very difficult to change bed linen and inconvenient to make the bed.
  • Hot air rises to the top - it’s stuffy.
  • It’s inconvenient to get up in the dark at night (and you’re just too lazy to get down)
  • There is a risk of hitting your head on the ceiling.
  • Limits active personal life, especially with low ceilings.
  • A close ceiling can cause psychological discomfort
  • A large loft bed can visually overwhelm the space and make the entire room feel uncomfortable.

Conclusion: for many children, a high sleeping place will be desirable and comfortable, but adults should think carefully about this option and take into account their own height, physical capabilities and ceiling height.

DIY budget bed-podium.

I'm quietly renovating the house; I've gotten around to the bedroom on the second floor. I always wanted a spacious bed because I love sleeping in the star position diagonally, it was decided to make a budget podium bed with my own hands. I bought it from a green store: 40x60 block. Plywood, not sanded 1500x1500x21 2 sheets. Sanded plywood 1500x1500x6 1 sheet Furniture panel for facade 2000x400x18 Furniture panel for drawers 1200x200x18 4 pcs. 800x200x18 4 pcs. Hardware. Dye.

I attached a block to the wood grouse around the perimeter, which will also be the support for the log.

I started assembling a power frame with a support in the center and lags every 30-40cm. using corners 40x40 and 60x60.

I attached everything with yellow and white screws. I took hold of the boxes.

The power frame is ready

The boxes ride on the most ordinary wheels; I found scraps of 40x40 aluminum corners as guides.

I sewed everything up with plywood, always with gaps, and yes, I forgot, all the joints where creaking is potentially possible have silicone sealant.

I started working on the façade, cut out the furniture panel to size, marked out the openings for future drawers, the scraps were used on the facades of the same drawers, and chamfered them with a router.

Painting. I painted it in two layers before and sanded it after the first coat. The result is this invoice

Well, in the end this is the result.

It all took a couple of days, a little over 7,000 rubles. Dimensions for the mattress 1900x2000x200(180), side height 8 cm. Thank you all for your attention!

Self-tapping screws for laminate.

I thought I was the only one who was crazy about it. What about wall mounting? So that you never vacuum or wipe away dust? The next invention is a mop 210 long?

My eyes started bleeding too

Laminate is an independent floating floor; attaching it somewhere to the floor or walls will result in blown seams over time.

Unfortunately, I have sadder statistics based on 12 years of experience =)

Well, you compared. Metal has a much higher coefficient of thermal expansion than wood - this is one time. And two: I live in an apartment, and the rails are on the street. There the temperature ranges from minus thirty to plus forty in the sun, but in my house, well, from plus fifteen in the fall to plus thirty at most in the summer (and that’s unlikely, in the shade). Well, three things to follow: compare the cross-section of the rail and the laminate slab, a thin sheet of iron will also not expand much compared to a rail or beam.

You need to let the laminate expand for the first two or three weeks after installation, until it fits as it should, and then don’t care, it won’t go anywhere.

the price turned out to be a bed that costs more)) there is no point))

I got 2 beds for free with no purchase

There's just one thing I don't understand. Why buy such a liquid bed in the first place?! Of course, respect to the author for putting his hands into it. But it’s easier to assemble it yourself from the beginning if your hands are in the right place. And it will be cheaper.

I repeat, they turned out to be from me, I didn’t buy them)) I only bought a rag and foam rubber

Is this really a double room? In my opinion, this is a lorry.

Well done, I put my hands in - now it’s good. I also looked at the “Ikea” one, but it looked a bit runny. Made it myself from leftover material. It turned out to be cheaper and many times more reliable.

If only she would make the bed herself, there would be no price for her.

It is these beds that have the sidewalls that tend to burst. Perhaps the quality of gluing is poor; they are type-set and glued. I know of two out of three possible cases.

I have a glued central longitudinal beam in my Ikea bed. Broke twice. The first time I repaired it, the second time I replaced it with a solid rail. Little borers.

Another hack for an Ikea bed - over time, and quite quickly, all this crap called slats will fall apart... at least if you weigh 95+55, this happens after a couple of years... (although maybe you are terribly thin and don’t jump on the bed :) ))))... so, 10mm plywood in 2 layers with an overlap makes the bed monolithic and eternal... that is, I measured the dimensions, sawed down 2 plywood in LERUY according to measurements, but in 2 pieces for 1 layer (a solid sheet does not fit into a sedan ...) and I sawed down 3 more pieces on top to cover the seams, and fastened it all with self-tapping screws with an overlap... at the edges it rests on the original internal frame... I drilled it, but you don’t have to fasten it (if you guessed the size with the sheets) Finally, putting the mattress on you won’t notice anything of rigidity, and the bed will become indestructible and non-creaky... I did something like that on a rented apartment... but in my apartment I’ve been sleeping for a long time on a 2-meter bed with a lifting mechanism, and with a soft leather base... so, on an expensive bed then the same thing - solid sheets - only more + a lifting mechanism for storing things inside!

Any slats are sold and the prices are not expensive, but with slabs the orthopedic effect will go away.

I slept on slabs and on slats - a slab, but with a good, hard and expensive mattress it’s more pleasant, and I sleep on a hard one... I know what they sell, but the IKEA ones specifically don’t hold 150-160 kg for 2 people on 2 sleeps ok - that's a fact! when I slightly plopped down on it and broke 3 in the center - I stupidly redid everything! The bed model was the same, size either 140 or 160... for the last 7-8 years, size 180 (sorry I didn’t decide on 200)) with a stove and I’m happy as an elephant!

How to make a podium for a bed with your own hands

The use of non-standard architectural solutions when decorating the interior of a room largely determines the attractiveness of its appearance. Such techniques include multi-level ceilings or niches in the walls. The recently popular bed podiums also add originality to the design of the living space. In addition to the aesthetic component, such designs also have a functional purpose.

How to make a podium for a bed with your own hands

Types of podium beds

Podiums with beds stand somewhat apart from the row of cabinet furniture. The basis of the podium is a frame made of wooden or metal elements. The main load falls on the supporting parts of the frame. Their number and arrangement depend on the area of the structure and the load on it.

The shape of the podium can be anything: from standard rectangular or square configurations to polygonal (for example, in the form of a trapezoid) or even rounded. They can be installed in a niche of any geometry, and in a bay window.

Bed with a round platform

Any communications can be hidden in the cavity of the structure, for example, wiring from the lighting of this area. As a rule, the height of the elevation varies between 0.2...0.5 m. High podiums can be equipped with steps, which adds originality to the design . They can be equipped not only with drawers, but also with entire wardrobes with hinged doors. If the height of the room allows, structures can be erected, even rising a meter from the floor.

Is a podium bed a luxury item or a practical interior element?

Important! The steps can also be equipped with drawers, allowing for additional storage space.

By the way, the elevation can be made not only in the form of a box. It can, for example, be a system of shelves that simultaneously serve as steps. This design is unlikely to leave anyone indifferent. But, of course, the possibility of organizing places to place things is significantly reduced.

With wide steps

There are two options for podiums.

Using an elevation above the floor surface as a sleeping place . This option allows you to organize a large number of storage spaces in a hollow structure by installing drawers there. In this case, the bed itself is not needed; it is enough to place a comfortable mattress, preferably orthopedic, on the podium. A large double product can comfortably accommodate two people. But, of course, nothing prevents you from installing a full bed on a raised platform.

What should be the height of the bed: what should you consider when choosing?

In our active daily routine, sleep takes the least amount of time. Therefore, you need to be especially careful about rest at night. For each person, depending on age and physical condition, the factors affecting sleep are different: the freshness of the air in the bedroom, poor nutrition and time before bed, the clothes in which they go to bed - all this interferes with falling asleep and having a restful night.

A bed is more than just a comfortable mattress and a warm blanket; it has many more parameters, which together create the desired comfort.

Meaning of bed

Not least on this list is the bed and mattress. Anyone who has slept on a cot knows how uncomfortable it is and how difficult it is to get up from it. And the feeling remains as if there was no dream at all. Correctly selected bed dimensions, mattress softness and height from the floor will significantly improve your rest.

A low bed can be chosen by those who like to sleep on the floor.

Another design addition could be a canopy or simply additional supports for it.

The standard bed height depends on the generally accepted average height of a person. This means that for a person with a height of 165 cm, the height of the bed with a mattress from the floor will be from 50 to 63 cm.

The average height is considered classic - the bed is located at knee level.

Even if you don’t decorate them with fabric, such a bed will look original.

People are different in physiology; it is especially difficult for a tall person to find a suitable bed model. The reason is that when the legs are not bent at a right angle, there is more stress on the spine. Having woken up, getting up abruptly from this position will not improve your mood in the morning.

To determine whether the height of the bed is comfortable, sit down on it: your feet should be completely flat on the floor and your knees should be at right angles.

Depending on the height, bed models are divided into:

  • with a low height from the floor up to 45 cm. These include podium beds;
  • with standard height;
  • with a height of more than 70 cm.

The tall one is usually chosen by older people to make it easier to get up in the morning.

Another design addition could be a canopy or simply additional supports for it.

Why bed podiums are attractive

The podiums installed in the apartment become the central part of the entire interior. They are appropriate both in spacious rooms and in narrow rooms of a small area (if the ceilings are high), allowing you to change the perception of space and optimize its use. In the second case, it becomes possible to refuse to install a massive wardrobe and often does not allow installing a double bed.

Podium with a round bed

Installed elevations can perform several functions.

  1. Solve technical issues . These include the need to cover various types of communications and install storage systems.
  2. Decorate the room . It is not at all necessary to functionally use the space inside the podium. If this is not necessary, the elevation can only act as a design element. Using a podium, you can adjust the geometry of the room and zone the space. On a site that occupies a fairly decent area, a living room and office, a library and a place for relaxation, a dining room and a cinema room, not to mention a bedroom, can be arranged. The idea of placing both a sleeping place and a sofa for relaxation in one area seems quite reasonable.

In addition to dividing the room into zones, a podium in the interior is erected for storing things and even beds that do not fit in the room

The big advantage of creating such structures is the unlimited design possibilities. This applies to the architecture of elevations, lighting, and the use of various finishing materials. Podiums will certainly appeal to owners of studio apartments, where the need for zoning space is felt quite clearly. Moreover, for this there is no need to erect partitions or install screens.

Podium in a room of non-standard geometry with a pull-out bed

When installing podiums, there is no need for bedside tables or coffee tables. The area of the elevation usually allows you to place personal items on it. Many people like to sit by the window and watch what is happening. Installed next to the window opening, a wide podium the height of the window sill, which will become its continuation, can be used for relaxation.

A window sill as a seating area differs from a window sill-table or tabletop primarily in height

The only noticeable drawback of podium structures that can be identified is a significant reduction in the height of the room in the area where the elevation is installed. This point may be important if the ceilings in the room are already low, as well as if people living in the apartment are quite tall.

Important! The ceiling height in the room where the podium is installed should not be less than 275 cm.

Podium with storage system

Also, some difficulty may arise in cleaning the space inside the cavity, especially if there are no flaps that open upward.

Having simple abilities and skills in working with wood, tools, a small amount of free time, and most importantly, your own vision of interior design, you can make a podium bed yourself, without resorting to the services of professional teams.

Standard/non-standard stock sizes and ways to increase them

Depending on the country of manufacture, sizes may vary. Therefore, when choosing, attention is paid to the company (foreign or domestic).

Standard sizes are presented in the table.

Non-standard models are often made according to individual customer drawings. They differ in increased width or length. The form is:

  • semicircular;
  • oval;
  • round;
  • or square.

Diameter - from 200 to 240 cm, they are suitable for spacious and roomy bedrooms.

If the dimensions were chosen incorrectly (i.e., after purchasing it, it is uncomfortable to sleep on), you can correct the situation using expert advice (how to correctly calculate the dimensions of the bed?).

Adding Height

Increasing the height makes the piece of furniture more comfortable to use. Underneath you can make additional space for storing personal items. The solution will be appreciated by owners of small apartments, where every centimeter of free space is important. It is much more convenient to get up from a high bed . Therefore, they are preferred by older people.

Ways to raise the height on your own:

  • put it on high legs;
  • building a podium;
  • making drawers for bed linen.

All parts can be purchased ready-made at a furniture store or you can make them yourself.

With the help of running boards

If the height is increased with the help of special foot stands, then when purchasing them, attention is paid to the materials:

  • plastic - the most budget-friendly, but not durable material;
  • metal – withstand heavy loads, strong, durable;
  • wooden - look aesthetically pleasing, but are characterized by high cost.

Making a podium for a bed with your own hands

Where to start when planning to equip a podium:

  • determine the location, shape, type and dimensions of the structure;

Important! For safety reasons, elevated areas should not be placed near doors.

  • create a sketch of the structure. This can be done by hand or using a program that helps model furniture;
  • decide on the material and calculate its quantity.

DIY bed podium

Making a podium with a retractable berth

The design is a podium, inside of which there is a drawer with a mattress and a tray for storing bedding.

Most often, timber is used as a frame. In this example, the main load-bearing parts are metal corners made of hot-rolled steel. Their length is determined by the width of the room. This is the main difference between the design and its analogues. Such a reliable system allows you to safely move along the elevation and install furniture and equipment.

  1. Remove the fasteners from the side and middle panels of the bed. The fasteners are installed in grooves and fastened with screws. The size of the groove is 16 x 160 mm, and the depth is 3 mm. We transfer these dimensions to the ends of the new parts.
  2. We clean rust from old fittings using a drill attachment with a metal brush. We coat the fittings with a thin layer of anti-corrosion agent and install them in place.
  3. We take measurements for the new parts of the side and middle panels. The total length of each new side panel is 190 cm, and the middle one is 195 cm. The length of the new parts must be subtracted from these dimensions (2 x 33 mm).
  4. We cut out a groove with a chisel. In the new parts we mark the place for the groove, using the old fittings as a template. Carefully cut along the line and gradually hollow out the wood. Groove depth 3 mm.
  5. We attach the outer parts (A) to the side panels (B) and mark their location so that they are flush. ADVICE. The outer parts are made of pine slats measuring 22 x 34 mm.
  6. At the ends of the fiberboard we drill holes for dowels, with the help of which you can attach the outer parts more firmly. We use a drill with a diameter of 10 mm.
  • Insert 10 mm dowel markers into the holes in the side panel (B) and mark the drilling locations in the outer part (A). The depth of the holes should be 17-18 mm so that there is enough space for glue and 30 mm dowels.
  • We insert dowels into both side panels (B) and into the middle panel (C). Apply glue to the end piece (A) and into the holes, and then attach the pieces. We fasten the outer part in the middle with a screw measuring 4.5 x 60 mm.
  • We round off the top edges of the side panels and the middle panel and sand them. If you don't have a hand router, you can use a plane or rasp. First we sand with No. 60 sandpaper, and then No. 150.
  • We apply glue to the support rails, which we fasten with screws measuring 4 x 40 mm every 25 cm. We install one of them (D) vertically so that it is flush with the lower edge of the side panel (B).
  • Using glue and screws measuring 4 x 40 mm, attach the second support rail (D) to the vertical support rail (D). We install support rails (E) on both sides of the middle panel (C).
  • After painting and assembling the bed, we screw a new bottom made of slats to the support slats, which we purchase ready-made in advance. Now the “new” bed has enough space for a mattress!
