How to choose and install sliding interior doors

Standard opening sizes for sliding interior doors

During the installation of an interior door, special attention should be paid to the size of the doorway, its configuration and a number of other criteria. It is the dimensions that should be decided in advance in order to exclude the occurrence of undesirable situations, for example, ordering a non-standard door leaf and frame or additional wall decoration. It is not worth mentioning that interior doors and the process of installing them, if the dimensions of the product do not match the dimensions of the opening as a whole, will cost the owner several times more than it could be.

Door size

Wondering what size sliding doors come in? The same as ordinary interior doors, they can be divided into two types:

  • Standard Height - 2 m, sash width varies from 40 to 90 cm. These sizes are the most popular and will be much cheaper than non-standard ones.
  • Non-standard Made to order. Dimensions are determined in each case individually. The maximum size of the door leaf is 2400x1000 mm.

Standard sizes of interior doors

It is important to note that today manufacturers of interior doors produce a huge range of products. Most products have standard sizes:

  • 200 cm - height;
  • 60, 70 or 80 cm - width.

But some manufacturers produce door designs with a width of 55 cm and a height of 190 cm. In addition to the dimensions of the door leaf, the parameters of the frame also vary: the width can be 1.5-4.5 cm.

This information is extremely important when determining the size of the opening for an interior structure. If these values are neglected, then a situation may well arise when the interior doors do not fit into the existing doorway.

This will inevitably lead to the expenditure of additional funds due to its expansion. In addition, the presence of an electric cable and other communications, a metal frame near plasterboard fences will also have a bad effect on the widening of the opening for the interior door.

The situation will be stalemate when the doorway exceeds the standard dimensions of the door leaf. Reducing the doorway will also entail the need to contact specialized companies and additional costs. To correctly calculate the size of the required door openings, you will need to know a number of parameters:

  • the height of the proposed door leaf and its width;
  • thickness with the width of the door frame;
  • width of platbands;
  • the presence of a threshold and its size.

In addition to width and height, thickness also characterizes doorways. In a typical apartment layout, the thickness for standard opening dimensions is 7.5 cm. In accordance with this fact, manufacturers of interior doors produce frames for installation of a similar thickness.

This should be taken into account when installing the structure. Otherwise, we may talk about installing an expander for the box or sawing it lengthwise. If you do not provide all the data, then installing platbands in the future may cause problems and not meet the requirements for the attractiveness and appearance of the door structure.

It is recommended to measure the thickness in three places to determine the wall parameters. If the indicators differ along the entire perimeter of the opening, you will have to order atypical interior paintings. When the thickness at three points is different, you will have to cut the door frame or install extensions. Uneven thickness is evidence of the curvature of the walls. Without taking these measures, you cannot expect high-quality installation of platbands.

Doorway for interior sliding door: door type and dimensions

During the design process, standard sized doorways are used. Therefore, manufacturers produce models that correspond to classic dimensions. The opening for a sliding door is usually smaller in size than the leaves themselves. It is necessary to accurately determine its size and select the type of door before installing interior partitions.

How does a sliding door system work?

Over the past few years, sliding structures have become popular in the design of homes and offices. The main characteristics that brought them popularity are compactness and attractiveness. Opening the sliding door leaf does not require significant effort. A large number of sliding doors are produced, presenting options for installation in openings of non-standard sizes, made in a style suitable for the interior.

The main principle of operation of sliding structures is based on the absence of a massive door leaf that moves only in one direction. Instead, a roller system is used. The sash of a sliding structure moves due to rollers attached to the upper or lower part, along specially installed guides. The dimensions of the door leaf of sliding systems correspond to the standard ones, in accordance with state regulations. They have fewer installation requirements.

Sliding door systems are made from a variety of materials that are available for use in production and permitted by state standards. This approach allows you to choose the style of the doors to suit the interior. Materials often used in the manufacture of walk-through structures:

  • metal (steel or aluminum);
  • tree;
  • finely divided fractional wood;
  • plastic;
  • laminated coating.
  • glazed or mirrored design.
  • bamboo and other natural ingredients.

In addition to the material, sliding doors differ in the type of opening. Types of door leaves:

  • Single-leaf - the doorway is closed by one leaf moving to the side. The absence of a limiter and the presence of a rail system will make it possible to move the canvas in both directions.
  • Double doors are equipped with two leaves, similar or different in size. Installation of such structures is carried out in the presence of a wide opening.
  • The compartments are the classic type. The canvas, not divided into separate sections, moves using a system consisting of rollers and guides along the wall.
  • The book system is formed from several doors, sequentially connected to each other. It folds into the shape of a book, which is why it got its name.
  • “Accordion” is structurally similar to the “book”. The canvas is formed from a large number of vertical parts connected by hinges. Moves due to runners.

Dimensions of the doorway for sliding compartment doors

When designing an opening, taking into account the need to fasten sliding systems, it is necessary to take into account some subtleties regulated by GOSTs. The dimensions of the canvas for installing any sliding structure should not be less than 80 cm. The width of the opening for installing a single-leaf structure should be at least 90 cm. A double-leaf structure will require 120-150 cm of free space. Maximum dimensions may exceed two meters. If the width is significant, it is necessary to use a multi-leaf system. The discovery of such systems is carried out independently or sequentially.

State standards require leaving a gap between the wall and the structure. This is required to regulate the beam and reduce the load by using polyurethane foam. The dimensions of the structure and the opening must differ by the values established by the standard. Therefore, the installation of sliding interior doors is carried out according to the dimensions of the opening only after measurements.

Features of calculating the doorway of sliding doors

Installation of non-standard systems differs from installation of classic ones. They do not have a pencil case, which complicates the arrangement of the ends and requires precise determination of the dimensions of the components. Compartment structures require a technical reserve of free space of up to 10 centimeters on each side.

Sliding door systems are installed without platbands that hide defects. The appearance of small gaps can ruin the interior and the aesthetic perception of the entire structure.

When preparing for installation in new buildings, it is necessary to take into account the inevitable subsidence and partial changes in geometry. Installation in the future may lead to jamming if skewed. The materials from which a house is built have different shrinkage rates. The change in geometry takes the longest in wooden structures. The maximum subsidence occurs in the first quarter after construction. This makes shrinkage difficult to calculate. Therefore, it is better to abandon installation for a while, since the height of the opening for the sliding door may change.

Technological gaps during installation in wooden new buildings are not hidden by platbands for the first 24 months. In this way, the change in the geometry of the building is measured.

Sliding doors: correct placement

Comfortable sliding doors are now replacing standard swing doors. Often they move apart along the wall. Sliding products can be made from various materials: solid wood, laminated MDF boards, chipboard, aluminum profiles with translucent filling. The structures can also be of a lightweight type, for example, made of fabric or rice paper, which are stretched over a frame or frame.

In the situation of installing sliding door leaves, it will be necessary to provide free space near the opening, the size of which should correspond to the width of the sliding door. On the wall where the guide device will be placed, there should be no obstacles in the form of niches, pipes, protrusions, ventilation ducts, etc.

If the option of disguising the sliding structure in the wall is more attractive, then this wall must be installed during the renovation period and a guide or a special cassette containing the door must be placed in it. If it is not possible to build a new fence, then it is more advisable to place the sliding mechanism next to the wall or attach a guide and seal it with sheets of plasterboard.

Sliding door systems

Any product can be purchased ready-made, or you can order it in individual sizes in accordance with your own tastes. Which option is better in a situation with a sliding installation? Please note that the canvas in the open position must fit onto the wall, otherwise the cracks will become noticeable.

The doors of the finished sliding product have standard dimensions: 205 cm - height and 60-100 cm - width. The thickness of these doors in most cases does not exceed 4 cm. When constructing a wall for this type of door yourself, it is quite possible to “adjust” the dimensions to the existing panel. There are several sliding door systems:

  1. Compartment system. When installing a sliding system, in which the doors slide along the surface of the wall when opened, the panels should be selected slightly larger than the dimensions of the opening. For example, with an opening width of 68 cm, a canvas with a width of 70 cm is chosen. Corresponding requirements also exist for the profile that makes up the sliding guide: its length must be twice the width of the canvas.
  2. Pencil type system. When installing the sash (so that it fits into a special cassette), a design is selected in which the sash, when extended, will protrude slightly beyond the niche. In this case, the dimensions of the valves are made equal to the opening or exceeding its width by only a few centimeters. With an entrance width of 70 cm, the width of the pencil case is made equal to 60 cm. But the result depends solely on the preferences of the owners. For example, it is possible to mount the product so that the entire mass of the canvas goes into the cassette.
  3. Systems with folding doors. Interior doors that fold when opened are sliding structures with variable dimensions, which are affected by the number of attached leaf panels. A separate segment is 10-12 cm wide. A standard opening can accommodate doors that include 6-7 similar sections.

If the dimensions of the room and doorway are non-standard, as well as if you are not confident in the correct choice of the finished product, it is best to order doors from specialists who will take full measurements and produce exactly the product that will ideally fit all the parameters.

Main types of sliding systems

Traditionally, sliding doors are divided according to the type of material used for manufacturing. This affects the characteristics of the fittings used, but not the geometric dimensions of the sashes. These parameters depend on the design features of the door itself.

Sash movement options

It is customary to distinguish between single- and double-leaf structures. In the first case, only one leaf is used to block the door passage, in the second case - two. Moreover, they have the same or different widths. This design is chosen for wide openings. If a partition is installed, the number of panels increases to four.

Sliding products are classified according to their design features. It is customary to highlight:

  • Sliding doors. The straight sash, moving along guide rails, moves along the wall. Special rollers attached to the sliding door ensure smooth movement of the sash.
  • Book. The design includes 2-3 canvases, which, at the moment of opening, are shifted and folded using a special mechanism like a book.
  • Harmonic. A model consisting of narrow lamellas connected to each other using hinges. When the door is closed, the slats fold like an accordion.
  • Cassette. At the moment of opening, the sash moves into a special cassette. It is important that the dimensions of the structural elements are calculated correctly, since otherwise it will be difficult to assemble the structure without modification.

Calculation diagram for a cassette door
Which option will be preferable depends on many factors. Before choosing a specific door, it is worth measuring the doorway. It may happen that this factor turns out to be the main one, and instead of the planned book, you will have to be content with a single-leaf design.

We calculate the size of the door opening 800x2000

If you decide to purchase and install an interior door, you must first take the necessary measurements, and then buy a door leaf with a frame. On the market there are doors for sale in both standard sizes and those with unusual dimensions. That is why you need to study all the nuances in order to correctly measure the opening for a door measuring 800x2000.

Dimensions of the opening for the door leaf 200 by 80 cm

Calculating the size of the opening is quite simple. Most often, doors made from solid wood, MDF, chipboard, fiberboard have a width of 60-70-80 centimeters (provided that they are single-leaf).

In Soviet multi-storey buildings built using panel technology, the width of passages is 80-100 centimeters. This is a standard value determined by GOST standards. This approach has a number of advantages. So, doors of standard sizes have:

  • A wide range of models, allowing you to purchase a product for every taste;
  • Allows for easy installation;
  • They have a low price.

When the question of buying a door arises, the owner of the house certainly faces the task of measuring the dimensions of the opening. In order to avoid mistakes and not complicate the installation process with additional work, you need to correctly calculate the dimensions, taking into account the technological gaps and dimensions of the door leaf with the frame.

Opening for interior door 2000 by 800 mm

Every master should be able to calculate the size of the opening for an interior door 2000 by 800. Cloths made from MDF, chipboard, fibreboard, solid wood, have a running width of 60, 70 and 80 cm (single-leaf structures).

In multi-storey panel buildings built in the Soviet Union, passages with a width of 80 to 100 cm are provided. This is a classic option. Standard characteristics are dimensions approved at the state level and supported by GOST standards. Advantages of standard dimensions:

  1. Wide variety of models. You can find the product you need in a specialty store.
  2. Low cost and good quality.
  3. Easy to install.

If it is necessary to purchase a pass-through system, the consumer wonders what opening is needed for an 80 cm interior door, so as not to carry out additional work during installation. To avoid mistakes, it is necessary to carry out the calculations correctly, taking into account the technological gaps and dimensions of the purchased product with the box.

How to calculate everything?

Before you start calculating the dimensions of the passage for the interior structure, you need to take into account the following parameters:

  1. Box width.
  2. Threshold, if there is one.
  3. Additional decorative elements.
  4. Box thickness.
  5. Height and width of the canvas.

It is better to calculate the size of the doorway for a door of 80 cm without a threshold. Example: canvas size 2000x800 mm, box thickness 25 mm. The calculation begins by summing the thickness of the box and the width of the canvas. 25 mm must be taken twice, since the box is installed on both sides of the passage. You need to add 20-40 mm to the resulting amount. This is the technological gap required for installation work. The result should be 870-890 mm - this is the width of the passage for the 80 cm model.

Important! It is necessary to pay attention to the material used to make the interior door. When choosing an array, the thickness of the box will be greater (+20 mm).

The threshold plays a role in calculating the height of the canvas. The height calculation is done in the same way. The thickness of the box is taken once and if there is a threshold, its height is added. Before installing the product, you need to inspect the condition of the walls and correct any defects. Entrance structures cannot be fixed to shaky elements (plasterboard structures, pieces of wood covered with cement). When installing a compartment, the width should be greater than the aisle.

Calculation method

When calculating the size of the passage for an interior door, the following must be taken into account:

  • Width of the door frame;
  • Its thickness;
  • The presence or absence of thresholds;
  • Are there any decorative elements;
  • Dimensions (height and width) of the door leaf.

It is better to calculate an opening for a door measuring 80 by 200 cm without taking into account the threshold. For example, the door leaf has dimensions of 200×80, the thickness of its frame is 25 millimeters. First of all, you need to add up the thickness of the frame and the width of the door leaf. The value of 25 mm must be taken into account twice, since the door frame is mounted on both sides of the opening. To the resulting amount it is necessary to add 20-40 millimeters, which constitute the technological gap required for installation. As a result, you will get 870-890 millimeters - this is the necessary opening for doors that are 80 centimeters wide.

In addition, we recommend paying attention to the material used to make the interior door. If it is made of solid wood, then its box will be approximately 2 centimeters thicker.

The threshold is important when calculating the height of the opening. The procedure is similar to that for calculating the width of the passage. The thickness of the door frame is taken into account and, if there is a threshold, its height is added.

Before carrying out installation work, it is necessary to carefully examine the condition of the walls and, if necessary, eliminate all defects. Doors cannot be installed on an unreliable base (plasterboard structures, wooden parts on which cement is applied). If a sliding door is installed, its width should be greater than the width of the opening.

Canvas sizes

The dimensions of the canvas directly depend on the width and height of the opening. They must ensure complete closure of the latter. Considering that the opening cannot be narrower than 80 cm, the minimum width of the door leaf is appropriate. A technological gap must be provided to ensure the functionality of the door, and a place for installing the frame if its installation is planned. Design features are taken into account. The canvas can move inside the installed cassette or move along the wall. In both cases, the dimensions of the sash are different.

To ensure that the door can be used comfortably, it is recommended to choose the minimum width of the single-leaf door leaf at least 90 cm or even 1 m. In this case, you can easily bring furniture and other large items into the room.

If there are two sashes, the total width is at least 120 cm. However, how they relate to each other is not fundamental. You can install two identical door leaves, the width of which is 60 cm, or you can make one wider, the other narrower. In this case, you can fix one and use only the one that has a larger width. The maximum total width of the canvases is related to the dimensions of the opening.

Attention! According to regulatory requirements, regardless of the design features of the sliding door, the minimum width should not be less than 60 cm, and the maximum should be within 120 cm.

Regulatory documents regulate both the width and height of the product. The standard height is 2.1 m. But it is possible to increase this parameter to 2.4 - 2.5 m. When determining the height, you should remember the need for a technological gap between the end of the canvas and the upper/lower edge of the opening. If the door is cassette, it is not possible to install the sash without a distance between the end of the leaf and the top of the cassette.

Technological gap

When calculating the dimensions of the sash, the weight of the finished product is taken into account. With greater height and width, the weight of the canvas increases. This leads to increased requirements for the fittings used. It may even be necessary to replace the door material with a lighter one.

Thus, the dimensions of the door system largely depend on the design features and installation location. Before purchasing the sliding doors you like for a specific opening, you should make sure that installation in this location is in principle possible. In this case, it is necessary to provide technological gaps, without which the door leaf cannot be installed in place. If all calculations are performed correctly, the product will definitely last a long time without jamming during operation.

Size of standard doorways

In order to easily carry out calculations, you can use a special table of typical sizes of interior door openings:

2055-20601530-154020001400 (double door)

The table shows the sizes of the doors most often found on sale in hardware stores and markets. However, there are also non-standard models that require additional calculations. If you have any doubts, you should contact professionals who will help you perform the calculations without errors.

Arched doorways

One of the options for a non-standard entrance to a room or kitchen is an arch. This is a rounded entrance at the top, without a door frame or door leaf itself. It is made from the following materials:

  1. GKL - plasterboard sheets with a thickness of 9.5 mm, 6.5 mm. They bend and install well. Using this material, not only standard arches are created, but also in various styles.
  2. Fiberboard - wood fiber boards. They have sufficient flexibility, their advantages and disadvantages.
  3. Plywood - rarely used.
  4. Wood - working with it to create an arch is labor-intensive. This material is used for rooms where the emphasis is on natural wood of valuable species.

An arched passage is chosen for several reasons:

  • visual increase in ceiling height;
  • expansion of space due to the lack of a door structure;
  • brightening the room (if the room is dark, the arch is made with lighting from spotlights or LED strip);
  • interesting appearance that attracts attention.

Arches are created both rounded at the top, having a large width and standard height, and narrowed, oriental style, which have minimal dimensions in width, but normal height.

Custom wooden doors for a modern interior with a standard layout

Curly doors: how to measure

Naturally, it is much more difficult with figured doors. After all, creativity is not always reflected in size. In some apartments and houses you can see interior doors with a rounded top. In other words, when opened, the opening looks like an arched entrance.

There are also two ways here: one is easier, the other is more difficult. If the size is standard, then a fixed structure should be ordered for the vault, which will complement the doors when closed. In this case, the upper part should be made of the same material as the doors themselves. The second option is more difficult - to make a figured canvas that will open completely. And here it is important to perform all the calculations correctly.

It must be said that in some houses there are absolutely amazing designs of original works, in which even the forms differ from the generally accepted standard. Such doors are calculated and manufactured only individually.

Standard models

The installation process of standard door groups depends on the layout of the apartment. In such cases, it is recommended to purchase a specific model from the assortment offered by the store. The standard parameters are 600/700/800x2000/2100 mm in width and height, respectively. According to GOST, canvases 600-800 mm wide and 2000-2100 mm high are suitable for an opening 640-840 mm wide and 1976-2076 mm high.

For passages with a width of 1145 to 1745 mm, it is necessary to select an option from two or more segments. The width of the sliding sashes is 110-170 cm, and each sash individually is 60-90 cm. If the opening dimensions are much larger than those indicated, a design consisting of a larger number of sashes is used. However, such interior models are made to order.

Non-standard dimensions of entrance groups

There are times when you need to install doors that have non-standard height and width parameters. For this purpose, manufacturers make structures for certain opening parameters. During the development process, not only the height and width of the product are taken into account, but also its design, which would fit into the overall interior. The project can be drawn up by an experienced designer or presented by the customer himself, in accordance with his vision of the result.

In most cases, custom-designed interior doors are made by hand, especially if the sliding doors must follow the contours of an arch. In the process of manufacturing such structures, it is necessary to spend more time than when creating standard products with dimensions determined by GOST.

Such options can be used not only as entrance groups to the room, but also as:

  • dressing room fencing,
  • partition in the middle of the room,
  • niche cabinet doors.

The doors are installed during the restoration of the old premises. Previously, when building houses, specific standards were not adhered to, therefore, each individual house could have its own dimensions. During the creation process, factors such as surface coating and color are also taken into account, since ideally selected components can perfectly complement the interior of the room.

Non-standard doorway dimensions - acceptable options

Naturally, in modern houses, even despite the original layout, there may be completely different sizes of interior doors. For example, someone wanted to make a spacious entrance to the living room, thereby dismantling part of the wall. Of course, more or less the dimensions will be standard, or rather, understandable and complete. But what to do in this case with the door panels? There are two options: either order a special individual production, or install sliding structures from several panels. For example, the opening will be 1.4 m wide. In this case, you can use two 70 cm canvases, which are standard.

Non-standard values are used to embody design ideas and create an extraordinary interior. Departures from standards are made during the construction of a house, making repairs, creating the interior yourself; standards are changed by expanding or narrowing the entrance.
