Bedbugs in the sofa, ways to detect and remove them

Couch bugs are one of the most common types of household pests. Warm and cozy upholstered furniture is their favorite place to live, and besides, the power source is very close. The appearance of bloodsuckers in the house becomes a real shock for people, but measures must be taken urgently. The main question that interests affected residents is how to get rid of sofa bugs at home.

Why do bedbugs settle in houses and sofas?

So, keep in mind that bedbugs cannot live anywhere except apartments and houses.
Very small wild populations of them live in caves in Turkmenistan, feeding on the blood of bats, but the bulk of these parasites live in human habitation. There are no specific reasons for their appearance in an apartment in general or in a sofa in particular - when they have the opportunity to move into neighboring rooms or they accidentally end up here, they move in and begin to reproduce in a new place, trying to be closer to the victim - a person. In fact, if bedbugs find themselves in an apartment, they no longer have a choice: in order to survive, they need to start biting people. Therefore, there is no need to look for any malicious intent in their appearance on the sofa: they either ended up here by accident, with a suitcase or furniture, or they got in on their own if the neighbors had little food for them or dangers appeared (for example, the neighbors treated the apartment with an insecticide).

This is why bed bugs are often called couch bugs. This is not entirely correct; there is no separate type of “sofa” bugs - these are the same insects that live, for example, behind baseboards, behind cabinets, under parquet. They look the same, cause the same harm, and are removed in the same way.

The photo below shows the same bed bugs, only on the baseboard removed from the floor:

Please note that it is a mistake to believe that bedbugs live only in the sofa. Most often, this impression is created due to the fact that bedbugs bother a person only when he sleeps on the sofa. That’s why questions often arise about how to remove bedbugs from the sofa, without touching the rest of the apartment. In fact, bedbugs can crawl onto your sofa at night from behind baseboards, behind cabinets and under parquet floors. And if you don’t get them out of here, you won’t be able to completely get rid of them.

How to find bedbugs in a sofa and generally find out whether they are hiding in the sofa or somewhere nearby? Still, it may well be that they bite a person sleeping on the sofa, but then hide in some other places. So, finding them is both simple and at the same time difficult.

The main routes of penetration of furniture bugs into living quarters

  • From basements, where they parasitize rodents and stray animals.
  • Along with furniture, not only used, but also new. If the sofa or armchairs were stored in unsatisfactory conditions, then there may well be bedbugs in their joints and folds.
  • From the next apartment. The flat shape of the body allows the furniture bug to effortlessly squeeze into adjacent rooms through ventilation holes, sockets and any cracks. Most often, the migration of these parasites occurs in old multi-story buildings, especially those located in the suburbs.
  • Along with purchased old things and antiques. Blood-sucking insects hide not only in furniture and mattresses, but also in soft toys, clothing, as well as household appliances and electronics.

Bed bugs can appear in the sofa and other pieces of furniture due to the fault of the owners of the apartment or house. Firstly, poor cleaning of the premises increases the risk of parasites settling and developing in living rooms. Secondly, you can literally carry bloodsuckers on yourself. This often happens after staying in budget hotels, where bed linen and furniture are not properly maintained.

Other methods of struggle

It is usually impossible to get rid of insects using various folk methods, using tinctures or strong-smelling herbs, but “turpentine” and “denatured alcohol” can ruin the sofa forever and naturally, no one will do this, especially if the bugs came from the store together with a new sofa. The most effective and reliable way to get rid of parasites is to treat the sofa by specialized pest control services; this has always been the case and will always be the case.

It is a mistake to assume that you can get rid of insects by leaving them hungry for a while by moving out of your home. Bedbugs can wait a long time for the owner to return and lay eggs during this time. Therefore, if bedbugs have settled in the sofa, the problem needs to be solved radically and urgently, right up to getting rid of your favorite sofa, since in addition to the bites and diseases that they can cause, these are also very unpleasant insects that cause disgust, as you can see with one look at the photo.

What causes bedbugs in the sofa and how to get them out yourself

Bed bugs most often settle in sofas and beds, since here they are closest to the food source - a sleeping person. Since they do not feed on anything other than human blood in the apartment, they have to constantly move from places of shelter to a sleeping person to feed. The sofa itself, on which people constantly sleep, is ideal for arranging such bedbug nests.

Judge for yourself:

  1. From the nest in the sofa, the bug needs to move very little to bite a person and drink blood. The less he has to run, the lower the risk of being caught by a person and being destroyed. In a sofa, this risk is minimal: an insect needs to literally crawl from one side of the mattress or upholstery to the other - and that’s it, breakfast (or dinner) is served;
  2. Then, there are a lot of places in sofas that are suitable for arranging nests. Folds of upholstery, joints of pillows, cavities between the upholstery and the frame, cracks in the joints of the frames are almost ideal hiding places. Here, bedbugs are difficult to get hold of, but thanks to their narrow body, each parasite is reliably hidden from prying eyes. In our practice, there were many cases when the sofa had to be disassembled literally down to the bolt, including tearing off all the hardboard and fabric from it in order to get to well-hidden bedbug nests - with eggs and nymphs;
  3. Finally, sofas have more complex designs that are suitable for hiding places than simple beds. Large numbers of bedbugs can safely hide here, but it is more difficult to find them here, and if you can find them, it is more difficult to remove them from here, especially on your own, without the services of an exterminator.

Simply put, sofas are the safest and most comfortable place for bed bugs to live. It is not surprising that if they appear indoors, they multiply in the greatest numbers here, in the sofas.

The photo below shows what sofa structures infested with bedbugs look like:

Why do they even start on the couch? It's simple: bedbugs are either brought into the house by the residents themselves, or they migrate here from neighbors' premises. They can be accidentally brought in in a bag, on clothes, you can even accidentally buy a used and already contaminated sofa and bring it here.

If your neighbors have bedbugs, and your apartment is not well-renovated, it is almost certain that the parasites will sooner or later get into your home. And first of all, they will settle near the places where you sleep. Sleeping on the couch? They will probably settle near him and in him.

Reasons for the appearance of bedbugs in the sofa

To explain where bedbugs come from on the sofa, you need to note the following features:

  • they move along ventilation or external walls of apartments at a speed of about 1 m per minute;
  • bloodsuckers freely penetrate windows, even if a mosquito net is installed on them: in this case, they squeeze between its frame and the window frame;
  • parasites prefer to hide in warm, dry and hard-to-reach places: for example, under upholstery and in the folds of upholstered furniture, including the sofa;
  • they can live for a long time without food in secluded places, so they often appear in the house along with old things.

The first signs of bedbugs in upholstered furniture

The following signs indicate that there are bedbugs in the sofa:

  • Black spots on furniture and bedding. These are waste products of blood-sucking parasites.
  • Pinpoint bites on the skin in the form of a track, which appear 1-2 times a week: bedbugs do not feed on blood every day. A person can receive about 500 bites in one night. The bite site is a swelling with a bright red dot in the center.
  • The appearance of an unpleasant odor. Bedbugs give off a specific smell, which has been compared to the aroma of nutmeg, rotten raspberries or cheap cognac. Furniture in which these blood-sucking insects parasitize acquires a stale, musty smell.
  • Traces of blood on the skin and bed linen. They remain after insect bites, and also if a person, changing body position in a dream, crushes them. Traces of bedbug excrement are observed not only on the piece of furniture that they occupied: black dots appear within a radius of 3-5 m from it, on the walls, in the area of the baseboards. Bedbug bites not only cause discomfort: they can cause allergic reactions, the formation of ulcers with the addition of a secondary infection, and in severe cases, iron deficiency anemia.

Photos of bedbugs

Linen bugs are another name for house or bed bugs. Each parasite is equipped with an elongated proboscis, which was formed during the process of evolution. Previously, these were the lower and upper jaws. The proboscis has two channels designed for sucking blood and introducing saliva into the body of the victim. The bug chooses a place closer to the capillary and pierces the skin with its proboscis, sucks blood, then moves a few centimeters and repeats its actions. In 8–12 minutes, the insect is completely saturated and hides in a shelter, where it digests food for several days.

This is what bed bugs look like

Bed bugs can be 0.5–8 mm in size. In a hungry state, adult individuals are approximately 4 mm in size; after saturation with blood, the body of the parasite approximately doubles in size, reaching a size of 8 mm. It is more difficult to see and recognize the larvae of bedbugs; the youngest ones may be invisible at first glance.

How to detect bedbugs in a sofa

You need to pay attention to any changes in the appearance of upholstered furniture. If you are interested in the question of how to find out if there is a bedbug in the sofa, you need to inspect the structure.

At the same time, pay attention to other signs of the presence of insects in the apartment. Use a flashlight to find bedbug nests

The first signs that there are sofa bugs

Possible factors for detecting insects:

  • the presence of bites on the body: redness appears in different areas, severe itching, and such symptoms occur in the morning, because sofa bugs prefer to attack the victim at night;
  • a specific smell appears at home, it resembles old cognac, even if it has not yet been possible to see parasites, they still live on the property, they are just hiding;
  • you can understand that there are insects by the drops of blood that remain on the bed if the parasite is accidentally crushed; a person’s sleep during the hours when sofa bugs attack is quite strong, but involuntary movements are still made, which is why the larvae sometimes die .

What to look for when inspecting a sofa

Pay attention to traces of insect activity. When studying information on how to detect bedbugs in sofas, you must first get an idea of what excrement and other signs of parasites look like:

  • Considering that bed parasites feed on blood, when they defecate, they leave dark, almost black excrement on surfaces - this is how blood is digested in the digestive tract of the pest, feces resemble poppy seeds, and are often found in nests;
  • husks and eggs: the sofa bug develops gradually, periodically shedding its shell, these are the formations that can be found if insects are infested at home; after the appearance of the larvae, the shells of the eggs remain empty, they also remain in areas where there are nests.

The sofa needs to be lifted and moved away from the wall

How to find nests

The main feature of such insects is that they settle in places that are inaccessible to humans. To destroy a nest, you need to know how to find the cop in the couch. The presence of parasites can be determined by the degree of contamination of the seams.

At first sight

traces of bedbugs resemble stains of dirt: excrement is eaten into textiles, egg shells and husks are gradually compressed.

First you need to check the following areas:

  • upholstery seams;
  • internal surfaces of the structure made of wood;
  • upholstery, and pests choose the most remote places.

Be sure to inspect all upholstery elements

How to properly destroy bedbugs in a sofa?

At a minimum, you need to find all the places in the room where parasites may be hiding. Sometimes for this you have to make a complete revolution in the apartment, but if this is not done, some nests may remain unfound, then during processing they will be missed and the bugs will survive here. Therefore, the sofa is just the beginning. Often people start there, find bedbugs here, then check the entire apartment and discover that even more parasites are hiding under carpets and parquet, behind cabinets, behind wallpaper, behind baseboards - the situation can be individual in each apartment.

It may, however, be that the bedbugs have settled only in the sofa, but before treatment you need to make sure of this by carefully checking all other possible places of their hiding places.

For example, this is how a good specialist examines possible hiding places for bedbugs if the parasites themselves are not visible in the apartment:

But then you examined the sofa and became convinced that it was infected. It needs to be treated with a product that will quickly and reliably destroy bedbugs. These can be different insecticidal preparations, from relatively inexpensive (for example, Karbofos) to quite expensive. In some apartments, bedbugs may be immune to frequently used drugs; in others, they can be killed with cheap drugs from the market. Therefore, in many cases, the first treatment is a kind of verification. If the bedbugs are dead, then the remedy works against them. If they survived (at least some part of them), it means that they will need to be poisoned again with another drug.

To treat sofas, we use imported products with a complex composition and relatively new insecticides as active ingredients. Bedbugs are not resistant to such drugs and, if treated correctly, all parasites die. However, these products are quite expensive, they are not sold in markets, and it is profitable to poison bedbugs with them when it is possible to purchase them at wholesale prices. It is irrational to use them independently at home.

How to withdraw: effective methods

In recent years, the list of methods to combat these arthropods has expanded significantly. For example, effective insecticides have appeared that can kill insects in a short time. However, classic, proven methods should not be discounted either. In order for sofa bugs to disappear forever, you should treat your home according to all the rules.

How to properly treat a sofa

It is no coincidence that bed bugs are sometimes called couch bugs. It is in these upholstered furniture products that insects infest most often.

The process of removing bedbugs from a sofa has a number of features:

  1. insects feel comfortable in cramped spaces, so the ideal place for them to live is seams, folds, corners. Bedbugs can also settle on the back wall of furniture.
  2. The sofa must be processed from all sides, lifting, unfolding, moving it away from the wall.
  3. Particular attention should be paid to furniture drawers, if any. The bedding that is stored in them should be removed and subjected to heat treatment.

It is important to remember that bedbugs can nest not only inside the sofa.

Therefore, in order to permanently eliminate insects, you should also walk through other potentially dangerous places.

Mechanical method

This method is quite labor-intensive and ineffective. Before getting rid of furniture bugs, you should determine their nesting sites, walk through them with a bottle, manually collecting arthropods and their larvae. With this method of processing, there is a high probability of missing a couple of insects, which will begin to actively reproduce and quickly organize a new colony.

Vacuuming

This method is less labor-intensive, but more effective than the previous one. A huge plus for the squeamish – you won’t have to touch the sofa bugs with your hands. It is enough to go over all the seams and folds with a narrow nozzle. Before getting rid of bedbugs in the sofa, you should disassemble the furniture and move it away from the wall. The bag from the vacuum cleaner must be thrown away immediately so that insects cannot crawl around the room.

Temperature treatment

Treatment with hot water or steam is another effective method of getting rid of bedbugs. A temperature of 50 0C is already destructive for these insects. You can kill bedbugs using a steam cleaner. To do this, you should go over all the folds and creases. Covers for removable elements (sideboards, pillows) must be removed and washed. You can also pour boiling water over the seams and nesting areas, after making sure that such a procedure will not harm the furniture.

These insects cannot tolerate low temperatures either. In winter, you can put your furniture outside, and within a few hours the sofa bugs will die. After a week, the procedure must be repeated - during this period, new individuals will hatch from eggs that are resistant to cold. It is advisable that the temperature outside is below -150C.

Treating the sofa and other surfaces with an insecticide

This is one of the most effective and modern methods of combating these arthropods. Finding something to treat furniture against bedbugs will not be particularly difficult - stores selling household chemicals and gardening supplies offer a wide range of modern insecticides.

Processing is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. buy insecticide. Since upholstered furniture will have to be treated, it is important that the chemicals do not leave traces on the upholstery. It would be good if the cylinder had a comfortable, long nozzle that would help penetrate even remote places.
  2. Clear the room of foreign objects, dishes, and food. It is important to ensure that items removed from the treatment area are free of parasites.
  3. Soft things that can serve as a place for bloodsuckers to live (toys, tablecloths, curtains, blankets, pillows, etc.) are taken away and washed at the highest possible temperatures.
  4. Pets, including reptiles and fish, are removed from the treatment area.
  5. Wear PPE (gloves, respirator, goggles, closed clothing).
  6. They take things to the center of the room and stick adhesive tape around the perimeter so that the insects cannot run away.
  7. The concentrated product is diluted according to the instructions. Treatment is carried out sequentially, starting with large clusters of sofa bugs. To enhance the effect, furniture can be wrapped in film and left for several hours.
  8. Carrying out general cleaning.

Despite the fact that sofas and other sleeping places are favorite places for parasites to settle, they can nest under wallpaper, behind baseboards, in sockets, and behind paintings. Therefore, all potentially dangerous places should be treated, and not just those where insects were found.

Effective drugs include the following: “Combat”, “Foresight”, “Executioner”, “Insecticide”, “Tetrix”, etc.

Professional Services

To treat premises, you can contact special services whose scope of activity includes disinfestation, deratization, and disinfection. In the arsenal of professional craftsmen there are powerful remedies that will help remove sofa parasites once and for all. The main disadvantage of such services is the price for their services, which may seem too high to clients. But specialists carry out comprehensive treatment of the room, often providing a guarantee that bedbugs will not reappear in the sofa.

Folk remedies

A homeowner who doesn’t know how to get bedbugs out of a sofa on his own will probably come up with the idea of using folk remedies. It is well known that couch bugs cannot tolerate the smell of tansy, so they try to stay away from this plant. You can also drive insects out of their homes using vinegar or a mixture of turpentine and laundry soap. True, the specific aroma will not only repel parasites, but will also create a certain discomfort for humans. In addition, the explosive mixture can leave stains on the upholstery of the sofa.

Tansy or wormwood flowers, placed under the bed or on the bed, can repel insects for a couple of days. When hungry, the bloodsuckers will overcome their hostility and go on the attack again.

Ways to get rid of parasites

There are few methods by which you can get rid of bedbugs, these include:

  1. Mechanical destruction of bedbugs or collecting them manually - not everyone will do this, since the process is long, unpleasant and sometimes extremely ineffective;
  2. Impact of temperatures. In this way, it is quite possible to get rid of insects. Bedbug eggs and they themselves die within 24 hours at a temperature of -18°C, and also die almost instantly at a temperature of +50°C. You can take the sofa outside for 2 days in winter or use special heat treatment products. To do this, it is enough to pour boiling water over the sofa, but then it will take a lot of time to dry;

Cleaning the sofa

These methods are quite problematic and sometimes the bedbugs return after them, so we will consider in detail a more serious method with which you can get rid of parasites forever:

How to remove bedbugs from a sofa yourself

How to deal with bedbugs in a sofa: step-by-step algorithm

I’ll make a reservation right away that treating a sofa for bedbugs only makes sense in conjunction with treating the entire living space, otherwise it’s wasted work. Be prepared that this task will take half a day or even all day, depending on the degree of infestation and clutter of the rooms. So, how to get bedbugs out of the sofa:

Vacuum cleaner

We collect with a vacuum cleaner all the live bedbugs, eggs and dry skins that we were able to detect. Firstly, this will prevent the spread of frightened insects throughout the house, and secondly, it will clear the field for further action. Dust and debris accumulated under the sofa and in the internal cavities will obviously interfere, so you can’t do without a vacuum cleaner.

Keep in mind that bedbugs do not die in a vacuum cleaner, so after completing the procedures, we immediately pack the collected garbage into a plastic bag and throw it away. Bedbugs and their feces cause allergies, so we use a vacuum cleaner equipped with a HEPA filter.

Steam generator or hot air gun

We treat areas that are inaccessible to a vacuum cleaner with steam or hot air: folds, seams, zippers. Bedbugs crawl into cracks as thick as a plastic card and lay eggs there. Heat treatment will allow you to penetrate hard-to-reach places. From the direct effect of a temperature of +100˚C, bedbugs and eggs die in 3-5 seconds.

Be careful not to burn yourself or damage delicate materials.

Insecticide

We disassemble the sofa, separating its component parts from each other, and spray it on all sides with a chemical to kill bedbugs. We carefully go through the cracks, joints, fastenings, connections of wooden elements with upholstery, seams, folds, edges, bottom, legs, armrests.

We choose a long-term contact agent. Information on how to poison bedbugs in a sofa is in the video review of remedies for bedbugs and other insects. It gives a detailed description of drugs of different chemical classes and formulations, which will tell you what is the best way to treat a sofa against bedbugs. During work we use protective equipment: respirator, rubber gloves, long sleeves.

To enhance the effect of chemical treatment and prevent bedbugs from spreading from the sofa to the room, so-called encapsulation is used. It is ideal to completely cover the sofa in a cover made of thick material with a zipper. Or simply wrap it in film, securely taping the joints with tape. The main thing is that the packaging is sealed. Encapsulation is an additional measure.

After treatment (immediately or after a couple of hours), intensively ventilate the room for 3-4 hours and do wet cleaning. Cover the sofa with a clean blanket.

Heat treatment

Adults and larvae die in a matter of seconds at a temperature of 50 degrees. This method is very effective and safe. It does not require large financial outlays. You can live in the room immediately after treatment.

Getting parasites out of old clothes and bedding is quite easy. To do this, place the items in the washing machine and set the temperature to maximum. All living things are guaranteed to die

Treat cabinet frames, carpets, and furniture with steam or dry hot air. A steam cleaner (mattresses, upholstered furniture) and an industrial heat gun (wooden furniture) can do this perfectly.

Vinegar solution

Treat wooden and upholstered furniture with a concentrated solution of vinegar. Dampen a sponge with it and thoroughly blot all crevices and possible habitats of beetles. Spray ventilation shafts, window frames, and doorways with a spray bottle. This can also be done for prevention several times a month.

To enhance the effect, add alcohol and naphthalene to the liquid in equal parts. Once on an insect, such a mixture instantly kills it. It can also be used for prevention if there are already pests in the apartment next door. The solution is easy to prepare at home.

Diatomite (or kieselguhr)

Mineral-based powder, non-toxic to humans and pets, but harmful to insects. A godsend for opponents of chemistry who are concerned about whether bedbugs can be removed using natural means. Of course, you won’t be able to remove the entire colony from the couch with diatomaceous earth alone, but you will definitely be able to reduce its numbers.

Using a regular syringe, we apply diatomaceous earth to the joints of wooden structures, internal metal connections, fasteners, holes and slots. Diatomite microparticles are abrasive, and although it is not toxic, we use a dust respirator when working to protect our lungs from unpleasant effects.

It is desirable that diatomaceous earth remains on surfaces for at least 5 days, and if it does not cause aesthetic discomfort, then for as long as possible. You should not remove it with a vacuum cleaner, as this is detrimental to the filter, and in addition, the vacuum cleaner will disperse diatomite particles into the air, which is not good for breathing. We collect the powder with a damp cloth or gently brush, while at the same time sprinkling a little water from a spray bottle to nail down the particles.

Prevention

After treatment, we inspect the sofa every 5-7 days and vacuum it regularly. We repeat the heat treatment with steam or a hot hairdryer at the same frequency. Remember, no matter how meticulously the work is done, there remains a risk that it will not be possible to destroy all the bedbugs in the sofa at once. Don't neglect monitoring and prevention. To prevent bed bugs from accessing the sofa from the outside, we place traps under the legs.

So, bedbugs in the sofa are a problem, but a solvable problem. If you have to deal with it, do not rush to throw out the sofa. In most cases, upholstered furniture can be saved. By diligently following these instructions, you will not give bedbugs a single chance. Let only positive emotions be associated with the sofa!

Plants

Wormwood and poisonous tansy will save you from pests in your apartment and garden. These plants are used as a prophylactic. They do not kill bedbugs, but only repel them for a while.

The pungent smell of wormwood is unpleasant to beetles. Place twigs in all nooks and crannies of the room. For some time, the activity of parasites will decrease significantly. After a week, the adults will become very hungry and the plant will no longer stop them.

Tansy is toxic to both humans and insects. Be careful. Keep the plant away from children and pets. Dried inflorescences are sold at any pharmacy. They have a sharp, unpleasant odor that will serve as a temporary barrier between you and the insects. Most likely, the bedbugs will run into the next room or apartment and hide in the cracks, waiting for better times.

Use plants as a control aid.

Will bedbugs disappear if you throw out the sofa?

When the first parasites appear inside the sofa, owners often eliminate the problem by removing the infected piece of furniture from the apartment. However, it is not advisable to do this, since other individuals will remain at home. This means that you need to fight insects in your apartment in other ways.

It is recommended to take the sofa to a landfill only when the room is heavily infested with pests. Under the upholstery, many nests are discovered.

When infected, the sofa deteriorates if parasites live in its body, on the upholstery and under it: the materials change color, dark spots remain on the surface (traces of waste products of pests). The product can only be restored by changing the upholstery and filling, which leads to increased costs.

The main places for bedbugs to be found.

Preventive measures

First, they protect the home from blood-sucking insects: they make cosmetic repairs, it is important to fill the gaps between the pipes leading into the apartment, restore the surfaces of the floor and walls in each room, and eliminate leaks in corner areas. Additionally, the ventilation ducts are covered with a fine-mesh insect net. Then the likelihood of bedbugs infesting your home is reduced.

The crumbling plaster is being restored in areas where sockets are installed - bedbugs often enter the facility through cable ducts.

To get rid of insects, purchased used items, including a sofa, are kept in the cold or washed at high temperatures. Use fresh herbs, such as wormwood.
