Features of the frame for a children's bed

A sleeping place for a child must meet the following indicators:

  • Environmentally friendly. To create a frame, you need to use only natural material that does not contain toxins or harmful impurities.
  • Structural strength. Don't forget that children are very active. They can jump on the bed. Therefore, it must meet these conditions and not bend under additional loads placed on it.
  • Additional elements. For small children, you can attach side walls to the bed. This will prevent them from falling while sleeping.
  • Comfort. The dimensions should be such that the child does not fall or knock on the walls during active sleep. When choosing dimensions, you need to take into account that children grow quickly. Therefore, an extra 30 cm in length will never hurt.

A wooden bed is environmentally friendly.
When choosing a base, it is worth taking into account the development of the child’s spinal region. You need to choose it in accordance with standards and orthopedic recommendations. How to choose elements for the frame:

  • It should not creak;
  • When choosing lamellas, you need to pay attention to their quality;
  • The metal frame must be reliable, without rust or chips;
  • When making wooden products, they should be thoroughly cleaned, varnished, and the structure made reliable.

Well, you are almost finished making your own bed frame.
You should take care of the quality of the fittings. If the bed is a linen drawer, then the lifting mechanism must be reliable and fixed to avoid injury.

Bed decor

The metal version can be decorated with a beautiful headboard. To do this you need to use forged elements. If you have knowledge of blacksmithing, you can make elegant curls yourself. If you don’t have such knowledge, then you can order a ready-made version.

For decoration, use bed lighting.

To sketch the finished version, you need to use your imagination or choose a ready-made diagram from the Internet. For a wooden product, you can use a carved headboard. Carpentry talent can become an assistant in this matter. Painting in decoupage style will add personality to the bed.

You can create a floating bed.

To do this, you should use acrylic paints of different colors and napkins specially used for this procedure. Also, to give an attractive appearance, it is worth applying stain and varnish. This will make the wood a brighter color.

Get creative when decorating your bed.

If you choose a matte varnish, then it will ideally hide scratches. A glossy varnish will hide unevenness and add brightness to the product. It is also worth painting the product. This could be paint to match the natural color of the wood, or you should choose your own option to match the existing design of the room.

Decoupage is carried out on white surfaces, so we use white acrylic paint.

You can use fabric upholstery. To do this, choose a dense material with a pattern or one color. You can nail foam rubber under the fabric base. To attach, you need to use a furniture stapler or glue.

A furniture stapler is the same construction tool that is most suitable for use on furniture.

Manufacturing materials

The frame under the bed can be made of various materials. Each is characterized by the presence of a certain set of advantages and disadvantages. The most popular raw materials are:

  1. Wood. The most common option. The material is distinguished by its presentable appearance, relatively light weight, environmental friendliness, and a variety of design solutions. Unfortunately, during operation some difficulties may arise due to the need for special care and restrictions on lifting weight. Without treatment with special compounds, raw materials are exposed to moisture and temperature changes.
  2. Chipboard and MDF. A base for a mattress is made from wood boards, which is practical, reliable, and comfortable. The product can be in the form of a solid sheet or an orthopedic lattice. It becomes possible to create a frame base of any size, even non-standard ones. The frame is safe for small children and is in the budget price segment. Disadvantages: the need to purchase an orthopedic mattress and drill holes for ventilation. In addition, cleaning the floor under the bed is difficult.
  3. Metal. This base is considered the most durable and reliable. Welded structures are decorated in different styles. The risk of creaking and deformation as a result of exposure to unfavorable external factors is eliminated. Disadvantages - high cost, restrictions when choosing flooring, heavy weight, which reduces the mobility of furniture. It is recommended for installation in a private house where the rooms are quite spacious.

Before purchasing a frame made of chipboard, you need to make sure that the material is safe for health. Toxic compounds based on formaldehyde are often used in the production process of particle boards.

Preparatory work

This is where you will need a drawing. Measure the required parameters and mark the cutting lines with a pencil. Use a ruler and cutter to make the cut. When the blanks fully correspond to your design, begin processing.

Remove all knots and kinks using sandpaper. It is better to have several types of sandpaper: coarse, medium and fine. Start leveling the surface with coarse sandpaper, then move on to fine sandpaper.

Some builders use chipboard to replace slats, because chipboard can be tempting with its price.

The end boards and headboard are cleaned with an electric planer - this helps to create an absolutely flat surface and correct the lines.

Assembly and installation of the bed frame

The process for a metal bed includes preparing blanks from pipes according to the diagram. They should be laid out on a flat surface. After this, fasten these parts by welding. It is important to correctly monitor the angle of the connection and maintain the desired degree. This will help give the structure evenness.

Using a grinder, you can make not only straight cuts, but also curly ones.

Next, the grinder is used. We need to make brackets. You can mount frames in them: two central and four side. The slope should be maintained at 5°. Using fasteners, connect the back and base using a welding machine.

The frame is assembled in the following way: make blanks. To do this, channels are cut and connected with an angle. Joints - weld. For the frame you need to set the back vertically. Make grooves in the bottom. To do this, use a drill of about 9 mm. When the holes are made, they need to be adjusted to fit the tenon with a file. There is a connection with the headboard.

Check all joints and corners for looseness before finally securing the structure.

Next, you need to weld the grid on which the mattress will be installed. It is welded onto the frame. The legs or base are welded. All protruding parts are cut off with a grinder and sanded. Paint is being applied.

Thanks to the roller, painting furniture will happen faster.

The wooden version begins with the fact that you need to retreat 1-1.1 meters from the wall. This will ensure the mattress is positioned correctly. Mark the sides of the end boards. When crossing lines, you need to attach supporting beams. Having created the frame, attach the headboard to it from the end side. To do this you need to use slats. Clean everything with a plane and remove dust.

Furniture must be varnished according to certain rules.

Cover all frame elements with stain. Then apply two coats of varnish. After this, you can attach slats or cross beams. It is better to use self-tapping screws. Attach the legs. These can be beams or boards for a solid base. Paint the product.

Choose quality materials for your bed.

DIY wooden frame. Step-by-step instruction

Before taking up the tool, the first thing you should do is decide on the size of the future bed (then the option of a double bed will be considered, because using its technology it will not be difficult to make any other). The most common size of a double bed is 200x160 cm; there is a large selection of mattresses for this type. But if space is strictly limited, then the size is selected based on these conditions. Next, select the height of the bed. Not only the preferences of the owners are taken into account, but also the need to further equip the product with additional, retractable elements. The design of the frame is usually standard; the only differences will be in dimensions and color. Based on these requirements, a drawing of the product must be made in which all dimensions will be met. It is not advisable to start work without it, without enough experience, because any incorrectly performed operation has consequences.

If you already have a mattress, then to make the frame, add approximately 10 mm to its dimensions from each edge.

Preparing for work

It was previously said that wood is a more appropriate and safe material. Dry, planed boards can be purchased at a special store; if desired, they can also cut them to the required sizes, which will save on delivery costs. The legs of the bed are made of timber, the sides are made of boards about 200 mm thick. It is better to use special lamellas as slats; they spring well, are easy to install and are sold in any specialized store.

Coniferous wood is ideal for making a frame. They are more pliable, durable, not as expensive and have a beautiful texture, which will be important when decorating.

List of materials:

  • Bed legs – timber 100*100*330 mm – 4 pcs.
  • Frame boards Rear and front – 195*45*1690 mm – 2 pcs.
  • Side – 195*45*2000 mm – 2 pcs.
  • Internal frame boards
      Front and rear – 95*45*1400 mm – 2 pcs.
  • Side – 95*45*1800 mm – 2 pcs.
  • Middle board inside the frame – 95*45*1910 mm – 1 pc.
  • Lamella – 820*63*8 mm – 24 pcs.
  • Lat holders with the possibility of fastening with self-tapping screws - according to the size of the lamellas - 48 pcs.
  • Corners – according to size (approximately 50×50) – 12 pcs.
  • Self-tapping screws:
      Basic – 5×80 – approximately 150 pcs.
  • For fixing corners – 3.5×35 – approximately 50 pcs.
  • For fixing lath holders – 3.5×12 – approximately 100 pcs.
  • putty
  • All dimensions are project specific and may vary due to design changes.

The inner board must be no thinner than 45 mm for reliable installation of the lath holders.

    List of tools

    • Drill and drill bits
    • Screwdrivers/screwdriver
    • Saw/jigsaw
    • Square
    • Rubber spatula
    • Of course tape measure and pencil
    • Clamps if necessary

To simplify assembly, use any available tools to automate the process as much as possible.

    Construction of frame and flooring

When everything has already been decided, the location has been selected, the drawing is ready and the material has been cut out in accordance with the required dimensions, you can proceed to the most enjoyable part. Assembly of the frame is carried out in just a few steps.

The more thoroughly the assembly is prepared - all dimensions are accurately observed, the necessary tools are prepared and everything is double-checked - the simpler the process itself will be.

    • Connect the side boards of the frame. Attach the legs in the corners with self-tapping screws through the side boards.

The location for attaching the bed legs is selected depending on how high the sides need to be left for the mattress.

Advice! For convenience, the legs are fixed to the boards with clamps to make drilling holes easier and more accurately.

    • Install support boards on the inside of the resulting box. They are fastened with self-tapping screws. For greater reliability, you can combine them with corners.

The side and central boards must be fixed 1 cm below the main level, because the lath holders will be located on them.

    • To strengthen the structure, install a leg under the middle board. It is a beam with a special groove the thickness of the board. This will increase the weight limit of the bed.

The leg can be made from scraps, fastening them together, or you can purchase the material separately.

    • Seal all cracks and crevices in the wood with a special wood putty. After puttying, the surface is treated with P80 sandpaper and finishing P120.

For processing, it is better to purchase a special sanding sponge.

    • Install the slats. To do this, you need to first cut the slats (their standard size, as a rule, is larger than necessary) and insert them into special batten holders, which are attached to the frame with self-tapping screws.

It is better to take the distance between the slats from 9 to 10 cm.

If everything is done correctly, then at this stage the main part of the work should already be completed and you can safely proceed to the most enjoyable part - beauty restoration.

Many elements and parts of the bed can be replaced with analogues. For example, use bolts (with preliminary preparation) instead of screws or regular boards instead of slats. The instructions provide a one-piece version of a simple double bed, the design of which can be improved in any way you like, in accordance with your own experience. The main thing is to stick to the basic rules.

    Pull-out elements

In order to make the most of all the free space in the room under the bed, you can build special drawers, for example, for linen or other needs. They are usually made of plywood, the front part is made of solid wood. The main condition is the height of the bed, that is, the distance from the floor to the frame. Depending on it, the sizes of the boxes are already selected. For convenience, wheels are usually attached to their base. If you slightly change the design of the frame, then you can install special runners for drawers on its sides from the inside and on the sides of the box.

It should be noted once again that with pull-out elements, the design of the bed changes somewhat. To hide the drawers, the side walls of the frame are extended to the floor and partitions are made inside for attaching runners.
