Do-it-yourself floating bed - drawings, photos, step-by-step instructions

Photos in the interior of the rooms

A floating bed will highlight the advantages of any design direction from classic to eclectic. Original furniture is suitable for apartments and houses with a non-standard layout. For rooms with open zoning of space, it is better to choose bedroom sets in the same style as the rest of the furniture

When choosing furniture for a children's room, you should pay attention to the safety of materials and reliability of assembly and fastening

Bedroom

In a separate bedroom, floating furniture will become the dominant feature of the interior. The floating effect combined with multi-level lighting will create a relaxing atmosphere in the room. Since floating furniture is quite large, you can compensate by using the space above its headboard for shelving or cabinets.

In the photo above the head of the bed there is an unusually shaped shelf.

Children's

As a rule, children are delighted with levitating furniture. A floating bed will become a favorite place for children's fantasy games. Dim lighting will calm the child before bed and serve as a night light in the children's room.

Living room

If the sleeping place is in the living room, then the bed should look as aesthetically pleasing as possible. Thanks to the original idea and lighting, floating furniture will decorate the room. Lighting, as a decorative accent, will delicately separate the sleeping area from the living room.

Interior styling

You should not place such a bed in a simple interior. To enhance the effect, think through the design of the room to the smallest detail. It’s good to use the ideas of experienced designers who can come up with something new.

In a classic interior, this furniture will enliven the interior and make it modern. Install bedside tables on the sides of the bed; low lamps will look good on them or hang them symmetrically on the wall.

To successfully fit a floating bed into a room, you need to maintain symmetry in the bedroom

Place the floating bed near a wall at 90 degrees to the window. The color is selected taking into account the color scheme of the bedroom; a beige or white design with rounded corners looks good. Install a headboard or at least create a copy of it on the wall surface! It is permissible to make the bed very simple, and it is advisable to upholster the headboard with good fabric, decorate it with floral patterns, gilding or stucco.

The classic design eliminates the need for lighting under the bed. They can be successfully replaced with candles or sconces.

Designers create interesting rooms in country style. It does not allow minimalism, but having thought through all the details, designers create an attractive interior. It is desirable that in such a bedroom the wood texture on the bed is noticeable - it is not advisable to trim it, do not paint it or cover it with panels.

A floating bed in a country style bedroom should look like a large wooden bed. You can leave the corners - the design looks like a rectangle. The room will look good with a simple wooden headboard, it is permissible to use a simple, smoothly finished board or fill it with thin slats.

The bed should be as simple as possible

Most often, 2-3 colors are used for decoration. Make the walls light and install contrasting furniture. For example, in a white bedroom there is a black or red floor and bed. Only one piece of furniture is installed in the room. A laconic picture hung above the bed looks good, and 1-2 simple lighting fixtures are installed.

Sometimes, in order not to divide the area of a small bedroom into several zones, designers make all surfaces a light color and paint the bed in the same way; it will visually merge with the walls.

The color of the bed can blend in with the walls

This furniture goes well with minimalist interiors - loft, modern or hi-tech styles. Well suited for a classic bedroom, it will bring a unique atmosphere, lightness and grace to it. It doesn’t matter whether you make the product yourself or whether it was brought from a furniture factory

It is important that this design will surprise guests and emphasize the individuality of the owner of the house

Do-it-yourself manufacturing technology

It is not always possible to buy these products; these models have a high cost. In these cases, it is better to do it yourself. Moreover, when developing the entire structure, you can independently choose the design, supplement the product with the necessary elements, and create a unique style of bed. It is advisable to first look at photos with views of the entire product. In the photo you can see each element of these structures, its location, method of fastening, design.

Dimensions and drawing

Before you start making a floating bed, it is worth developing drawings. The drawing is made on a large Whatman paper; on it you can easily mark the location of each element of the sleeping structure and note the dimensions.

But decide on the sizes yourself. You need to decide what type of bed will be – single or double. If it is a double bed, then its width should be 1.5 meters, or better yet two meters. Based on the size of the mattress.

Materials and tools

When the drawings are ready, everything has been decided with the dimensions, you can begin to prepare the necessary materials and tools. For a floating bed, like for other sleeping-type furniture, you will need the following elements for manufacturing:

  • wooden board with dimensions 200x20x2 cm, for the side wall of the bed;
  • wooden blocks for the frame, the dimensions of the boards are selected independently;
  • plywood board for the base of the frame, you can take it with dimensions of 2.5x2 meters;
  • LED strip with a size of about 7 meters, it will need to be installed under the frame;
  • boards with locks for installation on the sides of the frame, headboard - 4 pieces;
  • dowels for fastening the side walls of the product;
  • self-tapping screws for fastening the entire structure;
  • metal corners;
  • wood-colored plugs;
  • PVA glue;
  • stain, varnish;
  • dye;
  • mattress, bedding.

You will need a tool with which to carry out the entire process of making a bed:

  • screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • electric jigsaw or hacksaw;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer;
  • tape measure;
  • level;
  • pencil;
  • paint brushes for finishing work.

Manufacturing materials

The designs of this type of bed are made from different types of materials. On sale you can find various types of these models, fascinating in their appearance and design features. But you should be careful about the material, because the bed should have high wear and tear. For these models, several manufacturing bases are used:

  • wood - basically all these beds are made from a high-strength wooden base. Different types of wood are used as the base - cherry, walnut, oak, pine. These types of wood are highly durable, capable of supporting more than 100 kilograms;
  • metal base - manufacturers make floating-type bedroom furniture from metal. These structures have strong fastenings to the wall, ensuring the fixation of the berth;
  • combined - there may be models on sale that have elements made of wood and metal.

What types of floating beds are there?

There are several types of beds with a floating effect. As mentioned earlier, the entire structure is kept in the air thanks to special fastenings. They are:

With one leg. Sometimes floating furniture still has one leg; as a rule, it is located in the center of the base of the product

A decorative pendant helps to distract attention from the leg, although it is worth noting that the leg is already not visible due to the peculiarity of its location. In some cases, beams diverge from the support, this is done in order to distribute the load on the structure and increase the maximum load weight on the bed to 300 kg

  • Magnetic mount. A similar fastening method was developed by the Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars. The concept of this design is that magnets are mounted into the base of the sofa and into the floor covering, which help keep the bed in the air. The bed itself is supported by weight, this is ensured by four cables. This bed can withstand weight up to half a ton. But it is worth noting that such a bed cannot be used by people with pacemakers, due to the fact that a special magnetic field is created around the bed.
  • Suspended from the ceiling. Sometimes the bed is attached to the ceiling using special ropes. You can also make a bed on chains, but in any case, such a design is subject to high safety requirements. If the bed is used in a nursery, then it is better to resort to using steel cables instead of rope ones.

  • Use of a metal frame. A special feature of this fastening is its strength; the frame is coated with a special paint that can prevent corrosion. At the same time, the apparent weightlessness does not disappear anywhere. Most often, such a frame is covered with a special casing, which is made of solid wood.
  • Wall mounting. In this design, the headboard of the bed is attached to the wall to further increase the strength of the structure; this fastening method creates additional stability.

Organization of lighting

How to make lighting with your own hands? Manufacturing technology depends on the chosen type of lamps.

Selection and installation of LED strip

When choosing an LED strip, you must consider:

type of lighting. Ribbons with single-color and multi-color glow are available for sale;

Types of LED strips

Plain ribbons can be used as an additional source of lighting in the bedroom, while multi-colored ones perform exclusively decorative functions.

lighting intensity (brightness), which depends on the number of light bulbs and the power of the equipment.

To assemble a lamp from an LED strip, you will additionally need:

  • power unit;
  • connecting wires;
  • controller and control panel for multi-color ribbon. The equipment is designed to select and switch operating modes;
  • aluminum profile. The equipment can be replaced with a plastic profile or cable channel;
  • additional equipment: sensors (a lamp with a motion sensor or sound sensor will turn on automatically), a dimmer (a device for smoothly increasing/decreasing the brightness of lighting), a device for providing autonomous power, and so on.

The process of organizing the backlight is as follows:

  1. making an improvised lamp. At this stage, the tape is cut into individual elements and connected into a finished structure. To join the sections together, you can use special adapters or the soldering method;

Possible tape joining technologies

  1. installation of the power supply and selected additional equipment;

Connection diagram of the tape to electrical equipment

  1. fastening the tape. To obtain directional light, aluminum profiles are used, which are fixed to the bed using self-tapping screws. The tape is fixed in the profile on an adhesive base. Installation of the tape can also be carried out in profiles made of other materials or without them (fixation with glue or clamps);

Installation of tape in aluminum profile

  1. connecting and checking the functionality of the equipment.

The LED strip installation process is presented in more detail in the video.

Installation of duralight

Flexible cord lighting also begins with the choice of equipment. Before installation you will need to prepare:

the cord is of sufficient size. The cord can be round or flat, with a constant glow or several operating modes. In the latter case, a controller will be required to connect;

Flat and Multicolor Flex Cord

To illuminate the bed, it is more advisable to use a flat cord, which allows you to get more directional light.

  • power supply and other equipment to simplify the process of turning on/off the device;
  • connection cable;
  • clamps for fastening.

The organization of illumination of the bed with duralight is carried out according to the following scheme:

  1. making a lamp. Connecting the cord to the power supply and additional equipment. When assembling, as in the case of a diode strip, you can use the soldering method or special adapters;

Connecting the power cord

  1. cord fastening. To achieve maximum strength, it is recommended to place the clamps at a distance of 25 cm - 30 cm from each other;

Fixing the flexible cord

  1. connecting to the power supply and checking functionality.

At the user's request, a combined bed lighting can be made from LED strips, duralight, sconces or other spotlights.

Peculiarities

A double bed with a lifting mechanism is selected taking into account the following factors:

The dimensions of the bedroom, it will be difficult to install a large bed in a small room, unless of course it is put into a special niche. Pay attention to which direction the frame opens; this could be the book principle from the side or in the area of the legs. In this case, convenience is an important factor. Do not ignore who the furniture manufacturer is and what it is made of

It is better to choose from companies that choose Italian systems or domestic mechanisms, which have also managed to prove themselves well. You shouldn’t believe advertising 100%; it’s best to consult with knowledgeable people, read real reviews, people who have already used a similar design.

Light furniture in a dark bedroom looks original

Advice Pay attention to additional details: amplifiers, blockers. Such elements will help to avoid injuries and will not allow the mechanism to close on its own at the most inopportune moment.

Such elements will help to avoid injuries and will not allow the mechanism to close on its own at the most inopportune moment.

The lift can be offered assembled or disassembled

This is a very complex system that can only be assembled with skills and some knowledge, so it is better to trust the professionals. I always pay attention to the trim. For example, red leather is difficult to combine with any interior, and it is not always comfortable for a pleasant sleep

Basic requirements: softness, strength, quality, wear resistance, hypoallergenic.

In order for the box to last a long time, you need to choose a box that consists of compartments that will create an additional tie.

The box, which consists of compartments, further strengthens the bed frame

Double beds with a lifting mechanism have large areas; they require a certain amount of free space to ensure a comfortable sleep; the main thing is to choose the right mattress.

Bed sizes and shapes

Examples of the most common sizes and shapes.

Double

Such wide models are ideal for the bedroom and provide sufficient sleeping area for sleeping and relaxing.

Single

Children's or teenage single beds take up little space, which makes it easy to complement the interior with other furniture items necessary for a comfortable atmosphere.

Low

Due to their low height, they not only give the design some uniqueness and features, but also visually increase the free space.

Corner

These wall-mounted models, located in the corner, harmonize the decor and are equally well suited for both small and spacious rooms.

Due to the absence of sharp corners, it visually softens the interior space and adds special tenderness to it.

Rectangular

This form is especially suitable for creating a more thoughtful and strict interior, devoid of pretentiousness.

Design and location

A floating hanging bed creates a light and slightly mysterious atmosphere. It easily fits into most popular styles; This is facilitated by a variety of shapes (round, square, rectangular) and additional elements. Thus, a canopy, mosquito net, table or shelf attached to a wall support will help diversify the design. The following stylistic solutions are common:

  • Wooden models attached to ropes will be appropriate in interiors decorated with natural materials. This bed is chosen for design in the Scandinavian style, as well as in the loft or country style.

Types of bed designs with a floating effect

Floating furniture hangs in the air thanks to specific mounting methods.

On one leg. A floating bed can only have one support in the center of the base

Decorative lighting distracts attention from the leg, which is already almost invisible due to its location. Sometimes rays diverge from the central support, which allow you to evenly distribute the weight

With this fastening, the product will withstand a load of up to 300 kilograms. On magnets. The author of floating magnetic furniture is the Dutch architect Janjaap Ruijssenaars. The designer's idea is based on the principle of magnetic levitation. Magnets are built into the frame of the product and into the floor, which keep it in the air. The floating sleeping bed stays in place thanks to four cables. The magnetic bed can support a weight of up to 600 kilograms. It is not suitable for people with pacemakers due to the magnetic field. On a metal frame. The main advantage of a metal frame is the reliability of the fastenings. The metal frame must be powder coated to prevent corrosion. Usually the metal frame is covered with a body made of MDF or solid wood. Suspended from the ceiling. The bed can be attached to the ceiling with strong ropes. This design has increased safety requirements. For a child's room, it is recommended to use steel cables instead of rope ropes. Attached to the wall. A headboard attached to the wall will give the structure additional stability.

Original ideas for floating beds

Today, you can find a wide range of products in this category on sale, differing in their color, shape and characteristics.

The presence of a drawer or cabinet

Bedside tables are an indispensable element of the bedroom. Bedside furniture that is also attached to the wall and does not touch the floor will look quite organic in the bedroom interior. This will only enhance the soaring effect.

Bed with soft headboard

A bed in the air is only a laconic addition to the original interior, but to make it even more original, designers use special headboards. The most commonly used material for decoration is soft upholstery, which is made from leather or textiles. It is made in the form of a special screed and decorated with rhinestones or photo printing. Also, a wall with voluminous or soft details can act as a headboard.

Wood products

Furniture made from this material, depending on the type of processing, can be compatible with any type of interior. Beds with a wooden base are lighter than beds made from materials such as chipboard or MDF. This material has the advantage of placing less pressure on the fastening itself.

Double beds

Due to the presence of good fastening, the levitating bed can easily support two adults. During manufacturing, in order to understand how long the sleeping place needs to be made, you need to carry out calculations by taking the height of the tallest one and adding 10 cm to it.

Application of lifting mechanism

Using a special lifting mechanism, it becomes possible to store things at the base of the bed. But such a workpiece produces much more pressure on the fastening, requiring the installation of additional support. Every day, beds of this format are gaining more and more popularity. Its external and design features are clearly suitable for those who are interested in an innovative approach coupled with an interesting design in the usual provision of comfort.

A do-it-yourself floating bed with a durable fastening will help you save your family budget. There is an assembly diagram for this. Look at the pictures showing a hanging bed in the interior to choose the most suitable option. A hanging bed, a photo of which you like, can be found on the Internet and, using a ready-made project, you can make it yourself. You can also buy hanging beds online.

Advantages and disadvantages

The flying bed has unique abilities; from the outside you might think that it floats in the air, but this is not so. Its design is designed so that the support is hidden. Often the product is equipped with lighting, which gives the product a beautiful look. This model is not found on sale very often, so it is often made independently. But if you decide to buy it, then consider its advantages and disadvantages.

Positive sides:

  • If this design is compared with other sleeping models, then it is installed close to the wall, which creates the appearance as if it is hanging on the wall. Due to its tight fit to the wall, the sleeping bed does not wobble or sway;
  • the product looks modern, practical, and versatile. It can be used for both adults and teenagers;
  • will give the bedroom an unusual design. It will go well with an unusual interior style;
  • models of this type may have unusual options. Many photos of these products indicate different variations in the designs of floating beds.

Design disadvantages:

  • There is no way to arrange storage space under the bed. This is due to the fact that the space under the bed is provided with a general view;
  • It will be quite difficult to install this product with your own hands, so you often have to seek professional help.

Headboard design options

Interesting design examples.

With three soft headboards

It is a rather unusual design, which, due to its safety, convenience and three protective soft sides, is especially often used in the design of children's rooms.

The photo shows a bed with three soft beige sides in the interior of a children's room.

With two backs

This model with two sidewalls located along adjacent walls is distinguished by a rather convenient and compact corner placement, allowing for proper organization of space.

With rhinestones

Rhinestone decor, combined with rich leather, velvet or velor trim, will give the space a special chic, aristocracy and showiness.

Carriage tie

Thanks to buttons or furniture nails with rhinestones recessed into the back, it is possible to achieve voluminous squares or diamonds that allow you to create a truly royal bed. The carriage screed or capitonne is incredibly popular in Baroque, Rococo or other luxurious palace styles.

With ears

Additional structural elements in the form of side ears, distinguished by very different shapes and depths, create the most comfortable atmosphere and cozy mood in the room.

Quilted

Due to this technique, the upholstery acquires special three-dimensional folds or even forms certain decorative patterns and designs.

Colored

Undoubtedly it becomes the main compositional center of the room, clearly attracting glances. A soft colored headboard will add color to the interior, depriving it of monotony and dullness.

Features and characteristics

Today, many furniture manufacturers are trying to surprise their consumers by creating exclusive items. One of them is a floating bed or sofa. Such an amazing design will surprise many and will become the highlight of every interior where such a miracle is present.

Such a design will look harmonious even in a narrow room; its airiness will add charm and weightlessness to the room. All modern styles and trends will not mind borrowing such a twist.

It will look very impressive and not intrusive in a minimalist interior. Hanging like a cloud, the structure is attached in a very unusual way, so visually it seems that there are no legs at all. However, in some cases it can be attached to the wall, then the legs will be needed for stability, but they will be hidden in the depths.

Design Features:

  • The four legs are made of durable, completely transparent plastic, and chrome-plated metal is also used for practicality;
  • There is a very comfortable spring mattress;
  • The base is a frame-box made of natural wood;
  • Reliable support for the structure is additional fasteners (the presence of a rope).

Photos of such unusual designs can be easily found on the Internet. A children's room and a floating crib are the right decision; the child will fall asleep on it with pleasure, imagining that he is on a ship.

Features of lifting beds.

Folding bed with lifting along the long side
First of all, it is worth noting that the lifting bed is a transformer. During the day it is an ordinary wardrobe with shelves, and at night it is a comfortable sleeping place. Raising and lowering the folding bed is smooth and easy. This possibility is ensured by a special fastening system and a shock absorber system. These elements directly affect the quality and ease of use of each specific instance and model of bed.

Double lift bed

Furniture manufacturers have tried to make almost all possible modifications to such beds, and the cost can vary enormous amounts. There are very interesting options, for example, a double lift-up bed, which transforms into a regular wardrobe during the day, and into two separate sleeping places at night. Unfortunately, I don’t know the characteristics and how many kilograms this design can withstand. Most likely it is intended for children.

  • Based on the type of lifting, I have classified folding beds into two types:
  • with a vertical lift, that is, when folded, there is almost no space left above the bed for shelves or anything else.
  • with a side lift, when in the overall design the bed occupies half the height of the wall cabinet.

Folding bed with mattress

Both types can harmoniously fit into your interior. It all depends only on the taste of the customer and his ability as a designer to plan the environment. In my opinion, the shelving fits perfectly into the minimalist design.

Folding bed with vertical lift Lifting bed in extended form

One more fact can be highlighted from the features. As a rule, lift beds are supplied in pairs with a mattress specially made to size. Many manufacturers offer a choice of purchasing such furniture: just a separate bed or a bed with adjacent compartments and shelves. Naturally, such equipment costs much more, but it fits well into the design.

How the floating effect is created

A bed with a flying effect is intriguing, creates a special mood in the bedroom, it will fit into any interior, giving the room a modern, sophisticated look. At the same time, such a model can be made with your own hands. If you have to work with wood, you will need the following tool:

  • jigsaw with a set of blades for woodworking;
  • screwdriver with a set of bits;
  • screwdriver;
  • rubber mallet;
  • emery cloth;
  • paint brush;
  • glue, varnish, paint;
  • tape measure, square, marker, level;
  • awl, hand saw.

Also, corners and screws are used for the frame.

To work with a metal frame you will need:

  • saw – grinder with a set of blades;
  • drill, drills, welding machine;
  • clamps, clips;
  • ruler, angle, level;
  • pencil.

The support located in the center of the bed has 6 supports and is connected to hinges. The supports are pulled together with a cable, creating tension with turnbuckles. This action allows you to control the horizontal position of the bed when the floor surface is not very flat. However, if the surface is level, it is enough to secure the supports with bolts.

Bed parts can be made from eight dry boards. It is enough to have drawings and cut the boards according to them. Next, the supports are cut out, and all irregularities are removed using a grinding machine. To prevent the bed from squeaking, glue and furniture dowel are usually used. After all the parts are ready, they are coated with varnish or paint.

Sections of stainless steel pipes with a diameter of 34 mm can be used as hinges for the supports. Once this is complete, the bed pieces are assembled into one piece. Having established the level, you need to clearly adjust the furniture for the correct horizontal position. This is quite difficult and will require concentration. The level is also checked in relation to the supports. After adjusting the support, you can begin installing the bed frame, backrest and slats.

The uniqueness of the bed also lies in the light effect, which can be enhanced through the automatic process of switching on and off, for which it is necessary to improve the LEDs with a day-night sensor. With this solution, you can ensure that the backlight is turned on only at night. The strain gauge sensor is no less attractive. By installing it, the backlight will turn off as soon as a person appears on the bed, and will turn on during absence. For the head of the bed you will need filler and upholstery. For filling, foam rubber and its substitutes are usually used, and for upholstery, fabric, leather, suede, and their analogues are suitable.

The design of a flying bed can be with or without a niche. At the intended location of the box, a rectangular hole is cut out, using hinges, a lid is installed. After that, a board is made so that the mattress is fixed. A board is attached to the base so that the edge is 20 - 30 millimeters higher than the plywood. At this stage of assembly, the wooden parts are coated with varnish and, if desired, paint. When completely dry, the two parts of the bed can be joined together. If there is no need for a linen box, then assembling the bed is greatly simplified. In this case, the sleeping place is made according to a simpler principle, with support in the form of legs.

For convenient access to the niche, you can use a system with a lifting mechanism. It is quite difficult to do such work on your own; it is easier to purchase a ready-made bed with a lift. The mechanism should be used with minimal shock absorbers, which will serve as support for the berth at the top point. This convenient approach allows you to free your hands and does not require outside help.

If desired, the floating bed can be equipped with LED lighting - single-color or flashing. First of all, a metal frame is attached to which the LED strip is glued. This step-by-step action allows the tape to hold tighter, and the metal acts as a heat dissipator. It is more practical to use a full-color RGB tape and attach it from top to bottom. The result is bedroom furniture floating in the air, held above the floor by rays of rich color.

When making a bed yourself, you can make your work easier and hand over part of the work to a workshop. Specialists who work with metal profiles and wood coverings will manufacture a support or frame according to the drawings provided to them.

Untreated wood

Such products have their own individual characteristics and extraordinary appearance, which is determined by wood with a rough and uneven surface.

Selection criteria in the store

A stylish hanging bed is the most important part of a room's interior. When choosing it in a store, you should take into account a number of criteria.

  • Frame shape. A traditional rectangular shape is ideal for an apartment, and a round one for a dacha.
  • Mounting method. If you want to have a swinging effect, you should give preference to the ceiling mounting method. In order to more securely fix the frame, it is better to use a combined method (on the ceiling, wall).
  • Frame material. The best choice is natural wood. The wood is practical and durable. It will last longer and withstand heavy loads. The tree is also good for health. Evaporation from wood will have a positive effect on the respiratory system.
  • Quality of fittings and fasteners. The main thing when choosing such a sleeping place is safety. All fasteners and fittings must be of high quality.
  • Availability of sides. This point is especially important when choosing a children's hanging bed. The bumpers will make your sleep safe.
  • Design. The appearance and color of the product should be in perfect harmony with the color scheme of the room.
