Everyone chooses the appropriate option for themselves
How to make a sofa out of an old bed cannot be answered in monosyllables; one drawing will not suit everyone. It all depends on what piece of furniture is intended for remodeling and what you need to get as a result.
First of all, look at the frame underneath the mattress. If the mattress is on a board, there won't be much work to do. The option of fixing the mattress in a frame is also quite simple.

How to easily and simply make a small window in a country shed with your own hands.
Nowadays, ready-made plastic windows are installed almost everywhere. You can easily order a window of any size and shape (if only you had the money).
But this is not always advisable.
Sometimes in a country house, for example, you need to make a small window in an unheated outbuilding or in a toilet.
In this case, it is quite possible that the window will cost more than the building itself.
Therefore, it is easier and cheaper to make it yourself from scrap materials. How? Let's look at it below.
To avoid unnecessary expenses and trips to the store, I decided to make the window from scrap materials.
First of all, I went in search of suitable glass.
The window from an old wooden frame fit perfectly.
The frame itself did not have a presentable appearance, but the glass was just right.
Therefore, when making a window, I decided to start from the size of the glass.
To make the frame, I took an inch board and sawed it into slats of the same size.
Then, using a miter box, I sawed off four slats at an angle of 45 degrees so that they formed a square of a suitable size.
Then I marked the resulting blanks in the center with a pencil.
And with a hacksaw I made longitudinal cuts to the middle of the thickness of each slats.
Then he turned them sideways and, using a chisel and hammer, chopped off the excess parts of the wood.
Then I fastened the slats together using self-tapping screws.
Then I cut the hole in the barn wall to size and fixed the frame in the opening.
Finally, I inserted the glass into the frame and secured it with glazing beads around the perimeter.

Scheme for converting a bed into a sofa
The following operating procedure can be taken as a basis:
- Preparation of a sheet of chipboard, cut to the size of the bed. Then attach the sheet with screws or nails (not a desirable option) to the frame.
- For the backrest, take a height of half a meter and add the height of the bed frame to it. If you wish, you can make the back higher, but keep in mind that such changes in the design will increase the consumption of fabric and foam rubber (which are screwed or nailed on the side of the sofa that is pushed towards the wall).
- Take measurements from the seat. If the board is nailed to the frame at the top, make taller cushions. It is advisable to have a protrusion above the frame of 10 cm.
- The finished sofa can have a solid back and seat, but it can also be made from several parts. Designs of 3 pillows in the seat and 2 long ones in the back are often used. The backrest, consisting of 3 elements, is slightly less popular.
- Cutting rectangles for pillows from plywood. The dimensions of these parts depend on the chosen option for laying the pillows.
- Foam rubber is cut out according to the dimensions of the previously prepared blanks. It can be assumed that 1 pillow will use 2 to 3 pieces. For sofa cushions it is better to use thick sheet foam rubber. We recommend fastening the prepared pieces in several places with thick threads.
The main requirement for creating a new piece of furniture is that the old structure has a good and durable frame. Then a sofa made by yourself will delight you for a long time and will serve as a reason for justified pride.
- Cutting fabric. Two squares should be made per pillow, with seam allowances for the lower and upper elements and tape. The width (thickness) of the allowances is the same as that of the foam insert, and in length it is equal to the perimeter of the square. They are folded twice on that side of the tape, which is then connected to the bottom or back of the pillow. Do them with reserve.
- Stitching the top square with the strip and the free edges of the strip along the wrong side. Cutting the corners, after which you need to turn the pillow out. After inserting the foam rubber, fasten the top of the pillow with the gasket in several places. Don’t forget: the squares are laid with the front side
- Covering a plywood sheet with fabric. Possible fastening with wallpaper nails or gluing. The allowances are folded over to the other side.
- Each pillow is placed upside down in turn. A sheet of plywood covered with fabric is laid on top. The allowances are folded twice, the strip is fastened with wallpaper nails in increments of 5 cm to the sheet.
- Putting pillows in their places. If desired, you can install pillows in the side panels. However, this design is rarely used.
The final stage is decoration
The facade of the final product is often decorated with false doors - an overhead element that is part of the decoration, onto which handles are attached. Do not use mirrors in such beds under any circumstances, as they are not designed for such loads and may soon crack.
Even the simplest folding bed design can fit into any room interior.
This will also affect the weight of the structure being lifted, which may affect the durability of the mechanism. Be sure to install the legs into the pre-drilled holes and magnetic latches. Now the work is completed, and the new decoration of your interior is completely ready for your relaxation.
A single folding bed can be installed in the front room, and no one outside will even think about its presence, since it will be disguised as a closet.
How to make a sofa out of a bed
For this option, a single or double bed with a solid wooden base is best suited.
REFERENCE! The average dimensions of such models are 120 x 180 cm. Such dimensions will provide a good seating depth, and the length of the sofa will be enough to comfortably fit three people.
Tools and materials
For such a transformation you will need a certain carpentry skill. You need to be able to hold a jigsaw and screwdriver in your hands and know how to use them. Prepare in advance a simple hammer, drill, furniture stapler (staples for it) and furniture screws.
In order for the future product to have an attractive appearance, the frame from the old bed is not enough. At a hardware store you need to buy chipboard or plywood (8–10 mm thick), foam rubber and fabric for upholstery, and zippers for pillow covers. This model has a corner arrangement, so the sofa will have a back and one side part, which are moved towards the wall.
Remodeling stages
Conventionally, the whole process can be divided into two parts.
- Making a wooden frame. We measure the frame from under the bed and cut out a chipboard blank using these dimensions. We lay it on top of the frame, screw it or nail it. Depending on your wishes, we use a jigsaw to cut out templates for the back and side parts from laminated chipboard or plywood. They can have a rectangular shape (height from 50 cm) or rounded. Think about the drawing of the product, dimensions in advance, so that later the work goes faster. Fasten all parts with screws.
- Covered with foam rubber and externally trimmed with fabric. Cover the seat blank with fabric using a stapler. The fabric is cut with an allowance so that it can be folded and secured on the wrong side without any problems. Pillows or one continuous mat will be placed on top of it. Since the sofa is 3-seater, you can make three pillows. It will look harmonious, and the number of them behind your back depends on the available supply of fabric and foam rubber. Usually, two large and one narrow roller per edge is enough.
IMPORTANT! When making a sofa, pay due attention to the frame. Its design and strength will determine its service life and its ability to withstand loads.
Buying new furniture is always expensive, and it has standard sizes. In the case of making a sofa yourself, you have the opportunity to reduce costs, do everything to your liking, and realize your creative potential.
To begin with, you can practice on simple options for converting a bed into a sofa, and if things go wrong, then try something more complicated. Don't be afraid to bring your ideas to life!
The sofa bed pushes the boundaries
“Click-clack” model with mobile armrests
A wonderful invention comes to the rescue - a single or double sofa bed.
This universal solution has its advantages:
- an increase in free space , which is impossible if you put a large bed for two;
- If you have a studio apartment and you had to combine a bedroom with a living room under one space, then you can always turn an “intimate” corner into an excellent place for receiving guests in a few steps by simply folding the sofa;
- Another equally important problem – the search for free cabinets for bedding – disappears, because most folding sofas are equipped with convenient storage systems.
The only headache, but a pleasant one, will be the design of a bedroom with a sofa instead of a bed and the choice of quality furniture. Here you need to take care that your personal apartments do not turn into a typical hall. (See also the article How to combine a living room and a bedroom: features.)
Choosing a sofa bed: review of designs
Single children's sofa
At first glance, it may seem that these furniture products are no different from ordinary living room sofas. However, in reality their modification can be varied. Therefore, you can choose the most optimal folding and unfolding mechanism not only for convenience, but also for reliability. (See also the article Bedroom stand: how to choose.)
Important! You need to know exactly for whom you are going to buy a sofa bed for the bedroom. The model will depend on this: for example, it is better for a child to choose a lightweight design with a simple mechanism.
So, let's look at what manufacturers offer us:
- “Click-clack.” Perhaps the simplest model in terms of folding method. However, it adapts to the user's requirements as much as possible: it can be completely unfolded or left in an intermediate state (reclining position). As for the armrests, in this modification they are also mobile - they take any necessary position or are completely removed.
The photo clearly shows the frame of the model and its transforming mechanism
“Click-clack” unfolded
- "Eurobook". This sofa bed is also equipped with a fairly simple transformation mechanism, which, by the way, is also extremely strong. To unfold the Eurobook, you need to pull out the seat with your own hands, and when it rolls out, lower the backrest into the free space. As you can see, the design is extremely simple and reliable, since in principle there is nothing to break here.
“Eurobook” in chocolate colors
- Corner sofas with sleeping place. These models have two sides - long and short. A sleeping place is successfully “hidden” under the long part. By pulling it towards you and slightly lifting it until it is level with the fixed seats, you will get a full-fledged bed.
Corner folding sofa bed
- "Accordion". This model received such a musical name for a reason. Its transformation process is very reminiscent of playing the instrument of the same name: the seat moves forward, and the double back rests on the vacant seat.
Note! Accordion sofa beds are very popular, which is explained by their tempting width, which can be 180 cm. But despite this, they remain compact and are suitable for small apartments.
Excellent sleeping place! “Accordion” quickly assembles into a cozy wooden sofa.
- "Cot". Not the best option. This model is not designed for everyday use and its mechanism can quickly become unusable due to frequent use.
In addition, before you begin to unfold such a sofa, you will have to first remove all the pillows from it. And so every time! Oh, yes, and it’s unlikely to have a compartment for storing bedding. “Folding beds” are more suitable for living rooms, where they look very respectable.
Additional elements and fillers
Modern single sofa bed
The most important indicator that you first need to pay attention to when choosing a sofa bed is the transformation mechanism. The service life and ease of use of the product will depend on it.
Advice! For daily sleep, the “Click-Klyak” is most suitable, which quickly unfolds and folds. If you are looking for the most reliable model, then choose from corner products - the mechanisms in them are minimal, and therefore the frame of the sofa bed will remain intact for a long time.
Lately, transformable sofas with roll-out mechanisms have become quite popular. They fit perfectly into small spaces and their price is affordable for most citizens of our country.
Remodeling a crib: turning an unnecessary thing into a comfortable sofa
Every parent buys a crib for their child. But when the baby grows up, it becomes unnecessary. It's a shame to throw away furniture, but you don't need to do it. Any thing can be given a second life if you work with it a little and improve it. If you are keen on the DIY theme and know how to hold a tool in your hands, then remodeling furniture will not take much time and effort. As for the crib itself, it can make a stylish, compact and easy-to-use sofa for the living room. Read more about how to do it later in this article.
Sofa in the bedroom instead of a bed: review of designs, fillings and accessories
Alas, not every one of us can boast of spacious apartments with a large, comfortable bed. Most often, we can set aside a small room for a bedroom, where it is unrealistic to use large furniture.
And it also happens that we have to combine a guest room and a bedroom. Agree, in such conditions it is difficult to arrange a full-fledged place to relax. But still possible!
Transformable bed in minimalist style
Project Description
So, you have a crib and you don’t want to part with it. And this is not surprising, because every parent has the warmest and most important memories associated with her. The idea of the project is to make a compact sofa out of it. The main requirements for it are small size, attractive appearance and ease of use. In addition, its production should not require significant capital investments and large time costs.
If you follow the instructions described in this article, it will take you no more than one day, provided that you know how to handle the tools and have everything you need at your disposal. But let’s not talk about anything for too long, but let’s immediately begin the manufacturing process.
Preparatory stage
Before starting to make a sofa, it is necessary to develop a drawing of the future piece of furniture on paper, carefully considering the dimensions, the thickness of the upholstery, the angle of the backrest, etc. At this point you need to decide on the model of the future sofa (bed, book, corner, made from pallets). If you plan to make drawers or laundry baskets, this also needs to be reflected in the drawing.
It will also be necessary to sketch out patterns for the future upholstery made from the material, taking into account its cutting tolerances. To build a clear diagram, you first need to understand what is included in a regular sofa:
- The main part is the frame
- Back
- Legs
- Armrests, side parts
- seat
If the drawing is drawn up in high quality and in detail, making a sofa yourself will not be particularly difficult. A well-thought-out scheme will save time when purchasing building materials.
Required material and tools
When the drawing of the future sofa is ready, you can begin preparing the materials necessary to create it.
A sample list of materials and tools is as follows:
- Wooden beam with a section of 30x30 or 30x50;
- Fiberboard and chipboard sheets;
- Birch plywood 5mm and 15mm;
- Foam rubber, batting, padding polyester;
- Self-tapping screws, staples for fastening upholstery, nails;
- Upholstery fabric;
- Wood glue;
- Mechanism for transformation (for making a model of a sofa bed);
- Legs and other furniture fittings;
- Foam rubber crumbs for stuffing pillows;
- Jigsaw
- Drill
- Screwdriver
- Furniture stapler
- Tape measure, set of wrenches
- Sewing machine for sewing pillow covers.
Depending on the purpose and functionality of the furniture, the type of connection is selected. If a sofa is being made that will not be transformed, the parts are connected using nails, self-tapping screws and self-tapping screws. If the sofa is of a transformable type, the so-called claw fastening method is used when connecting the parts.
Sofa bed
Instructions on how to make a sofa with your own hands can be found on the Internet (photos and videos). If you follow clear instructions, at home you can assemble not only an ordinary, classic, but also a sofa bed. The main difficulties may arise with the folding mechanism, so for beginners it is recommended to make the sofa bed roll-out or pull-out.
The sofa bed can be made with three types of transformation mechanism:
- Retractable half of the bed with legs (see photo). This system is the least labor-intensive and material-intensive, but its weak point is the legs. They quickly break with constant use and under the weight of the overhanging part of the sofa.
- Bridge system. It is more reliable, and the movable supports on casters can simultaneously serve as bedside tables (see photo). These two systems have one common drawback: to fold the sofa into a bed, some free space is required behind the backrest. This small drawback is significant for small rooms where every centimeter of space is important. In addition, debris can accumulate there.
- The console system of roll-out sofa beds is devoid of the above-mentioned disadvantages; diagrams and videos of its device can be found on the Internet.
Assembly instructions
The back is assembled from a furniture board, on which the figured top edge is marked according to a pattern or template.
At the next stage, the diamond-shaped opening and the upper edge of the back are prepared. To do this, make two holes with a jigsaw in the shield near the obtuse corners of the diamond, so as not to turn the jigsaw file in sharp corners. After the parts are cut from the board, they need to be sanded. Using a milling machine, the front edges of the structural elements are rounded, which are then tinted. The shade of impregnation is selected in accordance with the overall decorative design. After tinting, the wooden parts are coated with clear varnish to ensure durability.
Then the support beam, which is previously strengthened in the middle, is fixed to the frame. Using self-tapping screws, a rail is placed on the block on which the hinged seat is attached (see video).
Next, mark the locations of the hinges on which the side supports of the seat will be fixed.
After this, the backrest is installed. It can be strengthened using double-sided adhesive tape, since there will be no force load on it. The base for the mattress is attached to the longitudinal parts.
Corner sofa
A corner sofa in its design and assembly is a little more complicated than a sofa bed, since it consists of several parts, the joining and manufacturing of which require special precision. Therefore, before you make a corner sofa with your own hands, you need to thoroughly familiarize yourself with the instructions for self-assembly, photos and videos of which are posted in sufficient quantities on the Internet.
A corner sofa for both the living room and the kitchen is preferable due to its spaciousness and ergonomics.
To make it, you will need the same materials and tools as when assembling the sofa bed. The dimensions of the upholstery fabric and panels with beams are selected based on the dimensions of the structure according to the drawing.
What will be needed?
If you have an old crib that's just collecting dust in the garage or attic, this would make a great base for a comfortable sofa. But it alone is not enough to make it. You will also need the following materials and tools:
- Grinder;
- manual sandblaster;
- hand saw;
- electric drill and drill set;
- screwdriver with removable bits;
- roulette;
- C-clamp;
- a simple pencil;
- white primer;
- paint (color at your discretion);
- clear nail polish;
- dark oak varnish;
- any old thick fabric;
- hardwood boards;
- 2" screws.
Everything you need can be purchased at any hardware store. When it comes to tools, if you like to do things with your hands, then you should have them. But if you don’t have any equipment at your disposal, then try to borrow it from friends or acquaintances, since there is little point in buying equipment just for once.
What may be needed for installation
- Boards. Not too thick. You can navigate by the thickness of the material in the sofa itself. If the frame has fallen into disrepair, then wood is purchased for it too.
- Fiberboard of different thicknesses - for panels for halves and much thinner ones for foam rubber.
- Material for decoration, you can carefully remove the old one if it is dear to the owner as a memory.
- Foam rubber. It is quite thick - 50 cm, but if it was not there initially, then the fabric will have to be calculated in new sizes.
- Door hinges. Large size and steel, you can choose decorative ones if an open structure is intended.
- Jigsaw, drill, screwdriver.
- Fasteners
- Stapler.
Preparatory work
When making a sofa, the crib frame will be used entirely. However, since the furniture is very tall, the first step is to saw off 25 centimeters from each leg to make it a little lower. In addition, to increase the comfort of its use, it would be a good idea to reduce the width of the frame.
This is much easier to do than it seems. You need to cut through 3/4 of the sides of the crib panel and remove the last spindle. And to maintain symmetry and aesthetic appearance, remove the tip from the other side of the panel and screw it into the one you will use.
Important point! To prevent the wood from cracking, pre-drill the hole with a Ryobi bit before screwing. With its help, you can handle everything much faster and better.
Drawing
Before you start making a sofa bed, you need to decide on its:
- dimensions;
- design;
- manufacturing materials.
Before manufacturing parts and assembling them, you will need to make a preliminary drawing in all projections . This will prevent errors in the work process and greatly simplify making a sofa with your own hands.
You can make a drawing of any piece of furniture in different ways:
- Draw by hand with a pencil on a piece of paper. To do this, you need to be able to make diagrams and correctly calculate the dimensions and number of parts.
- Find a suitable ready-made option on the Internet. In this case, you can only change the color or texture of the upholstery. But you shouldn’t experiment with changing sizes. This will lead to a reduction in the calculated load on the product during operation.
- Use special computer programs. The ability to use a personal computer will allow you to quickly and competently draw up a drawing in all projections with accurately calculated parts and their dimensions.
Sanding wood
This is the next step in turning a crib into a comfortable sofa for the living room. Sanding will make it smoother and more pleasant to the touch, as well as eliminate any existing defects. To do this, it is best to use a hand grinder powered by a built-in battery. If you don’t have one, then you can get by with simple coarse or medium-grit sandpaper, but this will require you to spend a lot more time and effort.
Main works
Once the crib is well sanded, you need to remove the protrusion at the bottom of the crib that is intended to support the mattress. Since adults will sit on the sofa, it will not be enough. For more even support, it is recommended to replace the lip with a longer piece of wood. But we will do this a little later.
First you need to assemble the shortened side panel and install it to the headboard and foot of the bed. The best option would be to use a C-clamp. This will allow you to achieve the correct angle during assembly. This clamp is very versatile and helps to significantly simplify many types of work.
To make the bench, old bed slats will be used, however, in order for them to withstand the load created, it is necessary to provide support for them. Here we will need two boards made of any hard wood. Cut them into two pieces front and back, then attach them to the frame using the L-shaped brackets that previously held the slats.
To make seating, use old bed slats. Cut them to the desired size, secure with screws and cover with thick fabric. If you wish, you can take boards, but this is an extra cost, and our sofa should be inexpensive to manufacture. Therefore, the use of slats would be the most appropriate solution.
Here, in fact, the sofa for the living room from the crib is ready. It looks good on its own, however, so that it is not embarrassing to show it to guests, it is recommended to work a little more with the furniture to give it a more attractive appearance.
Features of the sofa bed
These models are in particular demand among the population. The developers, having provided for all the positive qualities of sofas and beds, received the ideal design. The piece of furniture is placed in houses where there is no place to install an ordinary bed. The design is convenient and easy to transform. When creating a sofa bed with your own hands, you work with the following tools:
- Table saw.
- Electric jigsaw.
- Drill and drill bit.
- A screwdriver.
Work on assembling furniture does not begin until the design has been thought through and the drawings have been re-examined.
Materials used
The frame of the product is represented by a structure that takes on the maximum part of the load. When assembling upholstered furniture with your own hands, the following materials are used:
- For the load-bearing part, they work with bars and boards made of pine, spruce, birch or alder.
- Panel elements and fragments that fill the frame frames are created from plywood, chipboard and fiberboard.
- Natural latex, cotton, and thermal fiber are added to the soft parts.
- Pillows and side parts are made from non-woven fabrics and layers.
- Upholstery fabrics: velor, flock, tapestry or genuine leather. When upholstering the product, use cotton or wool velor. Natural tapestry fabric washes perfectly.
Upholstered furniture assembly process
The frame can be made in any shape and size.
Assembly is carried out using a screwdriver. Wood glue is applied to the joints and then reinforced with self-tapping screws. The inside of the back is left hollow. The upper and front parts are covered with mats made of foam rubber. Cover the sofa with fabric according to pre-prepared patterns. Having covered all parts of the structure, the assembly is completed. Experts recommend sewing removable covers. The design provides for auxiliary supports and legs, thanks to which the load will be distributed evenly. It takes three days to make a sofa bed with your own hands.
Cosmetic makeover
This is the final and easiest part of the work. The first step is to get rid of the defects that will certainly be on the wood. Fill all cracks, chips and holes from old screws with a special filler and leave the sofa for one hour to dry. After that, open it with a white primer, and when it dries, paint the furniture with any color paint you like. As for the type of paint, you don’t have to buy expensive products. An ordinary emulsion will be enough. When the paint has dried, all you have to do is cover the sofa first with dark oak varnish and then with transparent varnish. It will give the furniture a characteristic shine and make it more attractive, and also protect the wood from negative environmental factors.
How to make a folding sofa?
In order to create a high-quality and presentable roll-out sofa, you need to select and purchase the following accessories:
- timber with a section of 30x50 mm;
- chipboard (optionally, fibreboard);
- plywood 5x15 mm thick;
- fasteners for working with wooden furniture. They will come in handy in the future if you are interested in how to fix a sofa;
- nails;
- padding polyester and batting;
- foam rubber 20x40 mm thick (choose varieties with a density of more than 30 kg/m³);
- glue for carpentry and glue for working with foam rubber;
- special furniture fabric, due to which even an old sofa will look like it has been renovated;
- furniture legs 50 mm high;
- retractable mechanism.
How to convert a sofa into a bed with your own hands: step-by-step instructions
Today, folding sofas are in great demand: you can always put bed linen in them, they are easily transformed and take up minimal space. However, a bed mattress is clearly not enough for normal sound sleep and daily rest. That is why people living in small apartments are often interested in how to convert a sofa into a bed with their own hands. This knowledge will allow you not to overpay and at the same time get a full-fledged sleeping place.
Choosing a sofa suitable for sleeping
Your restful sleep and healthy back will depend on the choice of upholstered furniture. Experts advise you to pay attention to the following criteria:
- Comfortable bed. The unfolded sofa should be free of bumps and depressions.
- Orthopedic filling of the base. The most expensive but effective option is a mattress with independent spring blocks. A spring block, combined with a layer of orthopene, latex or felt, is also suitable. Good filling is considered to be: rubber latex, periotek, holofiber. The main thing is not to buy furniture with a foam rubber base. The material becomes deformed from frequent use.
- Reliability of the transformation mechanism. Daily use requires a robust folding mechanism. The best mechanism is considered to be the “Eurobook”. “Dolphin”, “scissors”, “daytora”, “pantograph”, “accordion” serve for a long time.
- Durable frame. There will be no problems with a base made of solid wood, plywood or metal.
- Upholstery. It is worth choosing furniture with high-quality, durable, wear-resistant and easy-to-care material. For example, from jacquard, flock, chenille or cotton.
Required tools and materials
The base with legs and partially the remains of foam rubber will be used from the old sofa. You will also need to additionally purchase a number of products:
- a plywood sheet with a thickness of at least 1.5 cm (if the condition of the legs leaves much to be desired, it is recommended to take a 4x4 cm block);
- foam rubber or padding polyester, the density of which is 3–5 cm;
- leatherette to decorate the surface;
- universal or wood glue;
- screwdriver;
- sandpaper;
- decorative nails with screws;
- ruler for measuring;
- marker;
- drill;
- scissors;
- hammer.
Preparing material for work
The headboard and footboard were left outside for a long time, so it took more than 30 minutes to clean them. I used more than 60 sheets of sandpaper for sanding. It was imperative to remove all dirt and moldy areas. Additionally, sandblasting was required.
Previously renovated areas required preliminary repairs. I had to renew these old “scars” - after removing the staples and drilling out the screws, I started gluing.
I glued all the splits well. At the same time, I used clamps, without which the adhesion would not have occurred. The initial repair took approximately 1 day. After that, the cracks were filled with putty and wiped.

Step-by-step instruction
After preparing the necessary tools and materials, you can safely begin the process of converting the sofa into a bed:
- First, the railings are dismantled: the sleeping place is completely unfolded and checked for integrity and stability. You should press on the corner parts of the structure and make sure they are strong.
- Mark the places where the mount in the form of legs will be installed. A tape measure is used to measure parameters.
- Additional block legs are cut off and then sanded using sandpaper. The legs are installed on screws and glued to the most reliable places in the structure.
- The length of the outer frame sides is measured. Taking into account the data obtained, strips are cut out of plywood elements, the width of which should be at least 30 cm.
- Installation of outer panels is carried out along the outer part of the base (glue and screws are used for this). To prevent the wood from accidentally cracking during screwing, it is recommended to first drill a hole, then apply glue and screw in the screw with a screwdriver.
- Several long strips are cut out of leatherette, the width of which is 5 cm greater than the outer panels. Strips of thin foam material should be 2 cm wider than the boards.
- The outer panels are glued with foam rubber. All this is decorated with leatherette. This material is attached to the lower panel part, slightly stretched and secured with staples at the top.
- Then you can proceed to the headboard: any shape is cut out of plywood.
- Wood glue is used to secure thick foam rubber to plywood.
- A piece of leatherette is cut out several centimeters larger than the dimensions of the plywood for the headboard.
- Using a furniture stapler, the decorative element is secured to the plywood back.
- Places for fastening are marked with decorative nails.
- A layer of fabric or rubber is used so that the decorative element is not damaged by nails. Using screws and a drill, the headboard is carefully attached to the sleeping area.
The bed is ready! All that remains is to choose a good mattress and new bed linen.
Thus, making a bed from an old sofa will be an excellent solution for budget-conscious people. If you follow all the rules and instructions, you will be able to produce high-quality furniture.
Shaping the seat and strengthening the back of the sofa
After preliminary repairs of all parts, I performed a schematic assembly to estimate the amount of material. I use the head of the bed to form the back of the sofa. I cut the footboard into 2 parts and make armrests.
Using timber I created a base for the seat.
Then I covered the back and seat itself with plywood 2.5 cm thick.
