1. Sofa with back to window
Not the most common, but nevertheless the most obvious way to place a sofa after the “sofa with its back to the wall”. This option for placing a sofa in a room is appropriate: if the living room is a walk-through, with a window on the wall adjacent to the door. Sometimes designers even move the door in order to perfectly “build” the sofa into a blind spot that gets lost during the passage; if the living room is small. This arrangement of the sofa in the room frees up three walls for maneuvers. This solution saves space and allows you to create a beautiful furniture composition.
Despite all the advantages, this option has one important drawback: sleeping near a window and a radiator is not very pleasant. The high back of the sofa eliminates this flaw, protecting both from heat and drafts, but at the same time the window cannot be opened wide. Tip: Ideally, the window sill ends flush with the top edge of the sofa cushions. In this version, the window sill acts as a sofa console - it is appropriate to place vases, table lamps, books on it, that is, to decorate.
2. Sofa with back to bay window
A special case of the previous option “sofa with the back to the window”. But successful implementation requires other conditions.
The solution only makes sense if the room with a bay window is large. The fact is that it is necessary to ensure a circular walk around the sofa and the attached furniture group. Advice:
When moving the sofa group closer to the center of the room, do not forget about the carpet with an active pattern. The carpet is necessary so that the furniture composition with this arrangement of the sofa is perceived as a group. Otherwise, it will be divided into several objects, and the interior will lose structure and expressiveness.
3. Sofa with back to wall
This is the most popular way to place a sofa in a room.
It would seem, what tricks could there be? However, this option also has its own nuances. First, you need to carefully consider the design of the wall behind the sofa. You can use one painting or a group of paintings, or a mirror. Important:
The hanging should be “proportional” to the volume of the furniture - the larger the sofa, the larger the composition above it should be.
A large-format panel or painting is one of the ways to effectively decorate a wall in the “sofa with its back to the wall” option. Match the color of the sofa and furniture to match the color of the panel. This is exactly how the interior is decorated in the photo.
Wallpaper with a large repeating print is another way to solve the wall behind the sofa. This technique is relevant for very small rooms. A large rhythmic pattern distracts attention from the size of the room and balances the sofa.
Secondly, the furniture group near the sofa should be well balanced - it is not enough to simply place a coffee table next to the sofa. You need to make a group of objects of different sizes and purposes that make up a composition with a sofa - for example, as in this and the next photo.
Advice:
In small living rooms, place not one large coffee table next to the sofa, but a group of stackable tables of different sizes. This solution will visually lighten the composition without compromising functionality.
Imagine a room with white walls and bare floors. Empty, cold, uncomfortable? What if we put a large soft sofa with pillows here? The room immediately becomes warmer and turns into a living room. Add a fluffy carpet and music - and you can have a pleasant time here with friends. These are the miracles of comfort that a sofa can create. Not so long ago, in our area there were no other sofas other than a linear one for two or three people. Whether it was a sofa bed, an ottoman or a sofa, it doesn’t matter. Corner sofas, which became popular in Europe, could not be found in our furniture stores. And a soft corner has always been called a standard set: a sofa plus one or two armchairs. And finally, a simple and ingenious invention of furniture designers - a corner sofa - has become popular in our country. Why simple and ingenious? But in fact, in such a sofa they glued together an ordinary sofa and a chair placed perpendicularly and filled the corner between them. And the result was a new piece of upholstered furniture, which is now found in dozens of modifications.
Many people choose a corner sofa as an alternative to the usual one, because the interior of a room with a corner sofa looks more original, becomes more functional and even claims to be able to change according to the mood... but more on that below.
In what area should we place it?
Yes, such a question is quite appropriate. A corner sofa immediately seems like a huge sofa, and even with an additional section on the side... But this is not necessary. Furniture designers also thought about small-sized apartments, where a small room can combine a living room and a bedroom. For small spaces, there are mini corner sofas, which allow you to gain additional space from the room by effectively using at least one corner.
Why at least? Yes, because modern corner sofas are no longer at all tied to the shape of the letter “L”, but easily take the shape of the letter “P”. And modern interiors quite allow the option when the sofa is located along a short wall and occupies both corners, and its side sections protrude forward. And you no longer need additional chairs, except perhaps an ottoman or a couple of large pillows for sitting on the floor, if there are a lot of guests and you are enthusiastically watching a good movie together. Moving away from the word “corner”, designers present modern corner sofas in both semi-circular shapes, and in the form of parts of a polygon and other shapes. Like any sofa bed, a folding corner sofa is designed to save space, transforming into a comfortable sleeping place for probably no less than two.
Choosing a seat for a sofa by function
When deciding where the sofa will be in the room, think about what tasks it will solve. In short, what do you need this piece of furniture for?
- If groups of friends and relatives often gather in the living room, the “soft group” (sofa and armchairs) will be the main part and occupy the main space. Usually it is grouped around a compositional center: a TV, a fireplace, a table.
- The living room in a modern apartment can serve as a bedroom for guests or for the owners. If people will often sleep here, place the bed so that it can be folded out comfortably and the sleeper will feel comfortable.
- In the case when the “king of the living room” is not the main, but additional furniture (for example, in the kitchen and bedroom), it is placed so that it does not clutter up the space and does not interfere with the passage to other areas. Typically this location is corner or along the far wall.
- If you want to zone a large room with furniture, a sofa is one of the proven ways to define a relaxation area. And you need to place it where it will be comfortable to relax: the area should not be located close to the entrance and should not be a passageway.
Some sofas leave a lot of room for changing the space: they can be rearranged in different ways. We are talking about modular and island models. If you think that your life may change dramatically in a couple of years - for example, moving from a noisy bachelor life to a more measured family life - take a closer look at the modules. With them you can easily turn a room for noisy gatherings into a cozy place for two.
How will it change the interior?
The sofa clearly aims to become the center of the living room. This does not mean that it should be placed right in the middle of the room, no. It just can be the main piece of furniture and worthily bear this title. Although, if the spaciousness of the room allows it, why not put a sofa in the center and build and fill the interior around it?
In addition to cleverly filling a small area, the corner sofa is credited with another remarkable ability. This is skillful zoning of the area. A living room interior with a corner sofa can easily have a clearly defined seating area. Organizing space in a studio apartment is just as simple, without any partitions, screens, etc.
This is how a sofa is used to zone a room
All you need to do is place a corner sofa correctly, lay a carpet in front of it, add a small sofa table if necessary - and there you have it - an island for relaxation. Opposite we place a TV, home theater or projector - the whole group enjoys an interesting video. It is impossible to achieve such a cozy seating area with a linear sofa. Only if you add additional chairs or another sofa next to it... But this problem has already been solved with a corner sofa. To make this area even more defined and enclosed, you can place in front of the corner sofa some kind of sofa with a small back and no armrests, a round or square pouf or several ottomans.
Changing the wall texture
There are times when there is absolutely no need to decorate the wall with any additional elements. Alternatively, you can change the texture of the wall, using, for example, brickwork, artistic plaster, lamps and many other things. In a word, everything that taste and imagination suggests.
The presence of a textured finish allows you not to use other methods of decorating the space above the sofa in the future.
A wall painted in soft colors can be decorated with a stencil or sticker. At the same time, do not forget that an ordinary white wall, which can only be slightly touched by some color, can act as a background.
Another popular option is inscriptions or drawings with paints.
What could it consist of?
Here we will not talk about the materials that are used in the manufacture of corner sofas, but specifically about what parts they can consist of. For example, there are corner sofas that clearly resemble a linear sofa and an armchair, or even two sofas, connected together. Some seem to consist of a sofa and a couch attached to the corner; a sofa, ottoman, or just a large pouf may also be placed on the side. Sometimes it seems that there is simply a bed attached to the huge corner sofa!
Of course, options complete with a bed, full-fledged couch or ottoman are suitable only for spacious rooms in a large house. Although, if the desire of the owners of a small apartment is to leave as little of the hard floor free as possible and give as much soft sofa space as possible, on which the children can freely lie down to sleep, sit, and play... why not! Maybe this room will turn out to be incredibly original and will delight any guest. So, not only is the design of the corner sofa clearly visible in the presence of various pieces of upholstered furniture, it can also be disassembled into these pieces and assembled like a construction set. Perhaps most of the corner sofas today are modular. And this is a huge plus for the interior. Today you want a corner sofa with the letter “P”, tomorrow you organized a party and instantly organized three linear sofas for convenience. Today you have a corner sofa, and when you want a little rearrangement, you will put a separate sofa and a separate daybed for relaxation. Or place a pouf in front of the sofa for easy communication with a couple of visiting friends. The ability to change the interior to suit the situation without purchasing unnecessary furniture. Agree, it’s convenient, practical and, again, economical. And at the same time always stylish!
Yes, the advantages don't end there. There is also a good practice of placing shelves for books and small items in the armrests of a corner sofa, a mini-bar, which can also be in the very corner at the back of the sofa, and equipping the sofa with small tables. Attached tables again save space and make your stay more comfortable: there is somewhere to put glasses, a bowl of popcorn, a plate of pizza...
A reclining table and bar can end up in some unexpected places.
Niche in the wall
The presence of a wall niche located at the proper height from the floor will be a definite advantage. The planning of such a construction feature is carried out at the stage of rough finishing or even construction of the building (for private houses).
The walls, bottom, and back wall of the niche can be treated with plaster or covered with liquid wallpaper or paint.
If desired and with the proper level of skill of the owner, spotlights can be mounted on the ceiling or on the walls of the alcove. As a rule, souvenirs, photos and family albums, books and decorative crafts are stored on the shelves.
Status and elegance
It is these qualities that are attributed to the leather corner sofa in the interior of the house. Many of us are still more accustomed to seeing leather upholstery in the office environment of rich offices, but we need to free ourselves from these strange stereotypes. Leather is a natural, living material, which is also quite practical and is currently not limited only to natural black and brown colors.
A leather corner sofa, especially if it is in a bright color, will transform even a very simple and modest interior. Will make him presentable and temperamental. To add warmth to a leather sofa and its gloss, complement it with a wool blanket and fur pillows.
Advantages
A soft corner is a comfortable and functional option in the interior. It acts as a style-forming element and gives the room individuality. Thanks to it, you can quickly transform even the most unprepossessing interior, zone the space, and get additional space for relaxing or sleeping.
If you compare a corner sofa with a “regular” sofa-book, you can notice many obvious advantages of the first option:
- Usefully takes up space in the corner, which is empty in many apartments/work spaces.
- Comfortable, stylish, modern apartment design.
- If necessary, replaces a full bed.
- Successfully zones the interior space of the room.
- Fits harmoniously into any interior.
The L-shaped model is distinguished by a large number of seats; people sitting on such a product can freely communicate with each other, looking the interlocutor in the eyes. Corner models allow you not to spend money on buying armchairs - their role is played by the side of the sofa.
An L-shaped sofa is a very successful find for housewives. As a bonus to all the listed advantages, they get an excellent place to store various utensils.
Typically, manufacturers make all sides hollow so that a variety of objects can be hidden there. In the bedroom you can put bed linen, blankets and towels, in the living room - pillows and blankets, in the hallway - shoes and umbrellas, and in the kitchen - cooking utensils and small household appliances.
Corner sofas will be appreciated by creative people. They make it easy to change the interior of the room. To get a new look, you just need to do something with the shape. If you move the corner sofa to the opposite place, the zonal distribution will change greatly.
Kitchen interior with corner sofa
In fact, in the kitchen, a corner sofa performs the same functions as in the living room. It makes the kitchen more comfortable, because sitting at the table on a soft sofa is always more pleasant than on any chair. It brings people together around the table and at the same time saves space, allowing you to seat another loved one next to it.
Corner sofas for the kitchen are also varied. They, of course, do not use an additional couch or ottoman, but there are many style options. You can choose a sofa with a wooden base for a kitchen set reminiscent of Provence style. You can choose models for kitchens in modern, postmodern and other modern styles.
If you don’t know where it’s best to put upholstered furniture, then choose a corner of the living room. The corner bed has a rather advantageous shape, so it will save you a significant amount of space. In a small room it will look great against the wall, and in a large room, on the contrary, it will serve as a zoning item.
If you have a large enough room, then you can get creative with island upholstered furniture. Such a sofa in the middle of the living room will look great and fit harmoniously into any interior. This model is advantageous in that it can be approached from any direction.
There will be absolutely no problems with straight upholstered furniture. It’s up to you to decide how to properly place a sofa in this type of living room. It will look great near the wall, near the window, and even in the center of the room. The only thing you should pay attention to is the size of the room.
Philosophical approach. How does Feng Shui recommend placing a sofa?
The subtleties of furniture arrangement are dealt with not only by design and ergonomics, but also by more exotic sciences. For example, the eastern teaching of Feng Shui recommends its own rules in order to rid the house of negative energy and make it more attractive to guests. Feng Shui will tell you how to position the sofa correctly.
From the point of view of Feng Shui, the “king of the living room” should be located along one of the walls, but so that its back is not turned towards the window or door. Otherwise, as adherents of the doctrine believe, the furniture will interfere with the circulation of energy. Therefore, the best place is along one of the long walls of the room. Feng Shui also recommends choosing furniture with legs so that the flow of energy can flow freely along the floor.
The disadvantage of this approach is that Feng Shui does not take into account the shape of the room. By placing a sofa along a blank wall in a long narrow room, you risk visually stretching it out even more. And in studios and lofts, placing objects along the walls is not always a good idea; it can create empty space in the center.
Placement of the sofa relative to other furniture in the interior
Regardless of whether the living room is large or small, you can also create coziness there and make everything functional and practical. The only thing is to think through everything in advance. A sofa is an ideal piece of furniture that will help divide a room into certain zones and perfectly support the design of the entire room. In a spacious room, you can place upholstered furniture in the middle, and lay a rug next to it and place a coffee table. This way you can create a cozy relaxation area for yourself. If you place a TV opposite, this will increase the functionality of this place, and here you can spend wonderful evenings with the whole family.
It is worth noting that the enemy of the sofa is the window. It is not recommended to place upholstered furniture of any shape in such an area. First of all, this will make it difficult to access the window itself, and will also completely close the radiator - a source of heat in winter, which is highly undesirable.
If there is a TV in the living room, then it is advisable to place the sofa directly in front of it, and not at an angle. This way, it will be more convenient for you to watch it.
In addition, the sofa should be placed in the living room so that it does not interfere with access to other objects where you often go (to a table, closet, shelf).
Where to put the sofa in the living room if it will transform into a bed? It can be placed near the wall or in the center of the room, everything will depend on the size of your room. It is worth choosing a spacious place so that the sofa bed can be easily disassembled and assembled. It is advisable that when disassembled you have space to move freely around the room.
If your living room is a walk-through, then upholstered furniture should not block the entrance. If there is simply no other choice, and you have placed a sofa bed in front of the entrance, then you need to leave at least 70-90 cm for free movement. Nearby you can place floor vases or floor lamps that will decorate the room.
According to Feng Shui, a sofa next to an aquarium will balance your energy.
No matter how beautiful it may be, do not place large cabinet furniture around the sofa. It overloads the living room and you will simply feel uncomfortable there.
A plan will help you understand where to put the sofa in the living room. Try to pre-draw on paper the options for placing the sofa. It's not that difficult. Take the advice into account, add imagination and you will definitely succeed.
Design options for the wall above the sofa
A variety of techniques are used to decorate this area. Their choice depends on the general style direction, the content of the remaining zones and the preferences of the owners. Accessories selected in the same style and color scheme look most organic together.
Accent wall
The location for the sofa is determined at the time the project is created. Therefore, already during the renovation, the wall can be decorated with contrasting finishes. This will allow you to introduce bright colors and textured lines into the interior in small, measured quantities. The finish transforms a flat, uniform wall into a spectacular surface.
An accent wall is highlighted using:
- colors - for this they use contrasting wallpaper, paint, plaster, tiles, wall panels. A calm atmosphere will be created by an accent close in tone to the main color. These shades are located next to each other on the color wheel. Colors from the opposite side will add a bright, cheerful note. Any bright colors will suit an interior made in neutral colors.
Saturated warm shades optically bring the wall closer. Therefore, in long narrow rooms, such an emphasis should be used on short walls. The room will visually become more square. Cool shades have the opposite effect. It is better to decorate long walls with them and the room will “move apart”.
- ornament - a wall decorated with drawings or ornaments stands out even more clearly against a plain background than one simply painted. Patterns will give the interior a characteristic mood and set a particular tone. For example, floral and plant motifs will add romantic notes, the ornament will emphasize the ethnic style, horizontal stripes will add dynamics and visually expand the wall.
- plot - photo wallpapers and drawings on the walls will emphasize the overall theme of the design, and at the same time get rid of the faceless wall. Subjects can be very different - floral motifs, animal paintings, seascapes, city views. The image must correspond to the general style of the room and be combined with the main colors of the interior.
- textures - an interesting, eye-catching surface can be created using natural stone, plaster, 3D panels, bamboo fabric, brick-like clinker tiles, moldings, siding, lining, plywood and even parquet.
Decorating with posters or paintings
A favorite design technique is to decorate the wall above the couch or sofa with paintings, reproductions, and posters. There are many options for placing paintings on the wall. Large format works serve in splendid isolation. Small one-size and different-sized canvases are grouped to form mini-galleries. Images can be arranged in the form of a square or strip. They are hung in a symmetrical and asymmetrical order, as well as in a swarm. In the latter case, the largest work becomes the center of the composition, and the rest are placed around it.
If certain rules are not followed, there may be a risk of design distortion. When choosing posters or paintings, you must take into account the following:
- the style of the works should be general, but in some cases you can play in contrast;
- images should be placed at such a level that it is convenient to view them;
- paintings should not get lost on the wall because they are too small. Also, you should not choose canvases that will crush you with their excessive dimensions.
- The best background for posters is a plain finish. Decorative elements will be lost on a motley wall. The images will simply merge with the pattern on the wallpaper. The position of a mat or baguette that contrasts with the wall will be corrected.
- Paintings need good lighting, both natural and artificial. Direct sunlight should be avoided, as the resulting glare will negatively affect vision and tire the eyes.
Paintings help to distract attention from the unevenness of the wall and adjust the size of interior items. For example, an oversized sofa will look a little less bulky if you place a series of paintings or a triptych above it.
Home photo gallery
Instead of paintings, photographs will look great on the wall. These could be copies from a family album, photographs of recognized photography gurus. In different interior options, black and white and color options are appropriate. Monochrome images with one bright accent look stylish, when only one or a few details are highlighted in color - a red rose, an umbrella, balloons. You can use pictures of the same or different sizes. The rules for placing photographs on the wall are the same as when using paintings. Don't rely only on amateur photographs. To create a photo gallery, the best option would be work produced and processed by a professional. And with self-shot amateur footage you can complement impeccable portraits from a photo studio. Organizing a family photo session in original scenery is a great way to get high-quality photos and have a fun time.
Geographic maps in the interior
The geographical map in the living room looks non-trivial and interesting. The image immediately attracts attention and speaks of the originality of the owners of the house. There are many decor options. Bright interiors will be highlighted by a monochrome image, a room in which neutral tones predominate - color. In classical and colonial styles, an old image with the names of ancient cities or simply an artificially aged modern version will look good. A map placed above the sofa in the children's room will help you study geography. It can be physical, political, with images of the flora and fauna of each zone, discoveries or inventions. It is not necessary to hang a map with a picture of the whole world. You can limit yourself to one continent or state. The decor is framed like paintings, used in the form of a full-wall fresco or photo wallpaper.
Mirror decor
Using a mirror you can not only decorate a room, but also solve some problems. For example, expand the room visually, increase its illumination. The shape and size of mirrors can be very different. The area above the sofa is decorated with large mirrors in luxurious frames of rectangular, round, oval and square shapes, and small ones grouped into a single composition. These include mirror stickers in the form of clocks, butterflies and flowers, and mosaics laid out in a certain sequence. Illuminated models look great and serve a dual purpose. Antique mirrors in carved frames deserve to take pride of place in the living room. So it’s time to take them out of the pantry and make your interior unique.
Decorating with dishes
A collection of decorative plates is appropriate not only in the kitchen. Place it in the interior of the living room, and the room will sparkle with new colors. Decorating the walls with interesting and bright dishes is relevant for country and vintage styles. Plates with traditional painting will enhance the charm of an ethnic interior. Products for the composition can be selected in a single theme or in different ones. They can be made in one color or in matching shades. The placement of the plates on the wall depends on the designer’s imagination. Compositions of several identical-sized objects grouped in a certain sequence and combinations of different-sized objects are popular. Most often, several small ones are placed around a large central dish.
Various textures on the wall
If the room already has an expressive accent in the form of a gallery or a bright poster, you should not overload the space and make an equally striking wall above the sofa. In this situation, you can highlight a zone by playing with a variety of textures. Stucco molding, plaster, ceramic panels or brickwork, soft eco-leather panels will only emphasize the style direction, but will not draw attention to themselves. Three-dimensional paintings protruding from the wall, created on plasterboard using ordinary putty, look luxurious. These are flowers, animals, birds, trees. They come in white or in color. The area is finished in neutral shades, or in the colors of the palette taken as a basis.
Original ideas with shelves
Shelves above the sofa are an opportunity to fill the space with not only beautiful, but also functional items. Here you can place things that cannot be mounted on the wall. These are various vases, antique candlesticks, photo frames, table clocks, scented candles. Reading enthusiasts can move part of their library here. Agree, it’s nice when you can get your favorite book without leaving the couch. Music lovers have the opportunity to install an audio system or at least a portable speaker here. Calm melodies will calm you down during relaxation, while energetic melodies will lift your spirits in the morning. The number of shelves and their size depends on the needs and preferences of the inhabitants of the house. Ideally, the shelves will be made of the same materials as the rest of the furniture in the guest room - table, cabinets, cabinets. Glass options complemented by chrome elements fit perfectly into minimalism. In classic interiors - from MDF or natural wood.
Niche above the sofa
You can also decorate a wall using a niche. This decor option must be considered before the renovation begins. Special work will be required, which must be done at the initial stage. It is necessary to create a frame from profiles, cover it with plasterboard, putty, and then apply the finishing touch - wallpaper, paint or plaster. The niche performs several functions. She can act as:
- shelves for displaying souvenirs, vases and other decor;
- frames for a bright poster pasted on the far wall;
- additional light source if it has a built-in backlight.
You shouldn’t overload the niche with decor, because it’s not a shelving unit. Its main function is to decorate the space.
Large wall clock
A large watch is not just a statement accessory. It is also a very convenient thing. Large numbers and arrows are clearly visible even from a great distance. A quick glance will be enough to find out what time it is. This decor is appropriate in any style. The main thing is to choose the right model. Today there are a huge variety of large-sized interior clocks on sale. There are a variety of mechanisms to choose from, from fundamental classical to avant-garde, in plastic and metal cases. Models without a case look impressive. All elements of this clock are mounted on the wall separately. Usually they just stick to the surface. If you use a little ingenuity and a little skill, you can easily make such a watch yourself.
If you do not want the noise from a working watch to interfere with your rest or distract you while working, choose a model with a smooth movement of the hands.
Themed decor
The idea embedded in the interior can be supported with the help of accessories. The maritime theme will be enhanced by images of ships, panels of shells, a clock in the shape of a starfish, a lifebuoy, a steering wheel, and oars. Country style - forged lamps, handmade crafts, boxes. And if you want to decorate the room as a hall of hunting trophies - stuffed animals, skins. Extraordinary pop art can be made even more expressive by placing guitars or posters of Elvis or Michael Jackson above the sofa. The Mexican style should be filled with bright ceramic plates with ornaments, a rug woven from palm fiber, baskets, tapestries, and paintings by Mexican artists. The best way to support the Russian style is to use folk crafts - Gzhel and Khokhloma plates, Zhostovo trays, Dymkovo toys. You can hang embroidered towels or Pavlovo Posad scarves over the sofa.
Combined decoration methods
If space allows, you should not limit yourself to one decorative element. A large area requires additional decoration. And if there is already a decorative niche or shelves above the sofa group, this does not mean at all that you cannot hang a picture or a clock higher. A large rectangular mirror will create a noble composition with two wall lamps. The wall will be filled in this way and the picture will become more complete. An accent monochromatic surface will be enlivened by posters, paintings, and mirrors. Sconces will logically be placed next to the designer carpet. Interior stickers in the form of flowers can be complemented with shelves with small pots. A sticker in the form of lattice metal shutters - real forged lamps.
How the size and shape of the room affect the placement of the sofa
An important factor in the placement of upholstered furniture is the size and shape of the living room. Of course, the larger the room, the easier it is. You will have freedom in choosing the most upholstered furniture, as well as in how to place the sofa in the living room so that it fits harmoniously into the interior. You will have to tinker with a small room, as you will have to think a lot, weigh your decisions in order to come to a single functional and practical model. In a small living room, you need to place the sofa in such a way as to save as much space as possible.
If you have an elongated and rather long room, then the sofa should be placed across to divide the room into two parts. You can divide the living room into a relaxation area and, for example, a workplace. Here you can use straight upholstered furniture, one side of which should be near the wall. You can also put a corner sofa, one side of which will divide the room, and the other adjacent to the wall. If you are not satisfied with this option, then you can place the sofa bed on the smallest side. So, it will be convenient to unfold it and store things in it, because in small spaces all the nuances are taken into account.
Placing a sofa in a large living room is a little easier; there is more freedom and options. You can place two straight sofas opposite each other in the center of the room. It will be both convenient and comfortable. Options such as a sofa and two armchairs, upholstered furniture and a small couch, etc. are also possible.
For some reason, a sofa in any room, no matter what kind of room it is - a living room, a kitchen, or maybe an entrance hall, a hall or a children's room, always occupies a dominant place. It is a kind of magnet, attracting attention to itself, inviting your guests and friends to sit down, and here you will find a place to rest and relax. You can “play” with the placement of this representative of upholstered furniture, with the choice of its shape and design for your interior, which will allow you to visually divide the room into several important functional areas - relaxation and active pastime. This is especially good when creating an exclusive design and interior of a studio apartment, for example, when combining a kitchen with a living room, or a living room and an entrance hall.
A truly real and unique beauty, at the same time a multi-functional item and an accent spot, can be a corner sofa in the interior of a room, regardless of its size and shape. Corner sofas can be safely placed in both large and small rooms, both square and elongated, rectangular.
Painting walls as a decorative element
The wall behind the sofa can be painted. Using stencils you can apply the appropriate design. If you are not sure about the quality of painting yourself, then it is better to invite a professional artist.
This type of paint is ideal for people who are tired of conventional building materials and wallpaper.
Living room and corner sofa
The interior of a living room with a corner sofa is always stylish and always comfortable, because such modern sofa models are very functional, comfortable, and very economical. They can suit almost any interior, any style, since today corner sofa models are produced to suit any stylistic decision. In addition, they have different shapes and sizes; you can purchase a left-sided, right-sided, or “U”-shaped corner sofa, folding or stationary. Choosing the right sofa option will mainly depend on your taste, the style in which your room is decorated and its size.
The design of modern models of corner sofas is very diverse and quite unusual. And this does not come down to different types of upholstery material. There are models in which the corner of the sofa looks like a small table; sofas can have a rounded, straight, wavy or combined shape. There are also sofas that have a kind of lamps built into the corner part, and sometimes, believe it or not, a music center. Now you understand why the interior of a room with a corner sofa comes to life, becomes more interesting and bright!
Decoration with stucco
With this design, you can use a variety of compositions. These can be both images of nature and human figures. Geometric modeling is also interesting. Today, the symmetrical arrangement of stucco objects on the wall is very important. First of all, this provision applies to modern and mixed classics. In this case, instead of massive parts made of plaster, you can use objects made of polyurethane.
Decorating a wall with stucco molding and decorative plasterboard panels can create the impression of a mysterious or solid, elegant interior and home as a whole.
Furniture arrangement - where to put a corner sofa?
Despite the fact that such sofas have such a proud name as “corner”, this does not mean that they must be placed in the corner of the room. There are many options, namely a corner-shaped sofa. There are a huge number of places for such a sofa - this is the center of the room, right next to the window, wall or perpendicular to it. Here, the size of the living room and the very functions that the sofa should perform in this room are decisive.
See how a corner sofa looks in the interior in the photo below. We see that if the living room is small, then in order to use the space as economically as possible, the best option for placing a sofa is to place it against the wall in the right or left corner, that is, where it will be, interfere as little as possible with moving around the room and at the same time it will create a conditional recreation area.
As for large rooms, there are simply no specific rules for placing a sofa. It can be placed anywhere, wherever, as they say, your soul desires - in a square-shaped room, such corner sofas in the interior of the apartment will look very impressive in its center, especially if its companions are a chic armchair and a coffee table.
To furnish large rooms, you can also purchase “U”-shaped corner sofas. And if you add to this composition, for example, a classic carpet in an ensemble with other interior accessories such as sofas, which, by the way, you can sew with your own hands, expensive paintings, wall panels, or curtains in the color of the sofa, and a stylish and modern interior design of the living room with corner sofa is ready!
Using photos
When using photos as decoration, remember that the images are of high quality, so in this case it is best to contact a professional photographer.
Photos can be changed to your taste and give the interior a new look
As an illustration, photos taken with friends, or some shot that made an impression on you or was memorable, would be suitable. Don't forget about photos that are taken in black and white. They can also be hung on the wall. Thanks to them, a special mood will be created in the room. In short, there are quite a lot of options for posting photos. However, they must have something in common. For example, color or frame width.
Photos carry aesthetic overtones
Corner sofa in the kitchen studio
Corner sofas are not necessarily intended for living rooms. They can be used in other rooms as well. For example, it may be an ordinary kitchen, or a not quite ordinary one - a studio kitchen. Here, corner sofas can visually influence the size of the room, increasing it. Also, with the help of corner upholstered furniture, you can easily zone the kitchen space, visually dividing it into a kitchen working and a living part; you just need to place the corner sofa in the kitchen interior with its back and facing the wall.
As you can see, the interior with a corner sofa does not at all reduce to the interior of the living room. There are many variations on where and how to place a sofa, and thanks to the wide range and choice of models, you can always purchase the sofa that is best suited to realize your fantasies and your space.
It is also important to know that a kitchen interior with a corner sofa is also very practical. This is due to many factors.
First, not many kitchens are large and spacious, although this room is almost the most important in the house. The kitchen simply must be spacious, with enough space for free movement, because standing at the stove or work table with a cutting knife in one hand and, as luck would have it, with a hot frying pan in the other, in a kitchen of six square meters there is a risk of turning around and injuring someone. -from household members or yourself increases several times. Here you need to be extremely careful with the arrangement of furniture.
After all, by placing a table, for example, in a corner, half of the seats are lost, and in the middle of the kitchen it simply creates a lot of inconvenience for the hostess. In a word, both ways are a critical situation. It is for this reason that “kitchen corners” have become so popular today. In the kitchen, a corner sofa looks beautiful and neat, without frills, it absolutely does not interfere with the cooking process. In addition, it also serves as a visual division of the room into the kitchen itself and the dining area.
Another convenience of such corner kitchen sofas is that their seats can open, deep niches are hidden under them, allowing you to store various items and kitchen utensils. Kitchen corners have a variety of designs, are easy to assemble, economical, and very comfortable to sit on. They are more comfortable than regular chairs.
However, we must not forget about one important thing. When choosing a corner sofa for the kitchen, you need to take into account: first, how and where the soft corner will be located in the kitchen, second, the quality of the sofa’s construction, and third, the material and upholstery of the sofa.
In our article above, we tried to give some, in our opinion, valuable advice that relates to the arrangement of upholstered furniture, however, regarding which model of corner sofa (left-handed or right-handed) to choose - this decision should be only yours, which will come exclusively from how and where you plan to place the sofa. After all, judge for yourself, it’s impossible to place a left-side model of a corner sofa in the right corner. Therefore, when ordering a sofa, you first need to decide on its location.
What to look for when choosing
So, having reviewed all the options presented in exhibition centers, showrooms or on online shopping sites, you may have already decided on certain models, and all that remains is to pay for and deliver the furniture. There's no need to rush. It is necessary to take into account other nuances of the choice so that the purchase does not cause disappointment in the future.
Dimensions
The first rule for optimally choosing the size of the sofa you like is that the length of the base exceeds the parameter of the side part. It is these values that apartment owners should take into account and it is important to measure them in advance, in relation to the location of the intended installation. Further:
- For models intended for sleeping, the following values will serve as comfortable sizes: single - length - 180-200 cm, width - 80-90 cm; two- and three-bedrooms with the same length, and width - from 150 to 200 cm, respectively.
- The seat depth for a comfortable sofa should be at least 0.5 m.
- Height above the floor - from 0.3 to 0.4 m.
These are generally accepted standards for the manufacture of corner furniture. However, the diversity of the assortment suggests that other options are also popular. To determine the most accurate size, it is recommended to use special 3D design programs. And “dance” from the results obtained.
Quality of upholstery materials
The color of the corner sofa depends on the overall interior, where the chosen combination is appropriate. It is equally important to take care of the quality of the upholstery. The structure of the material should not only be pleasant to the touch, but also durable if there are small children and pets in the house. It is necessary to take into account the hypoallergenic nature of the fabric if household members have such a predisposition. The best for simple care of sofa upholstery are:
- Leather. Over time, it will have to be regularly saved from scuffs, but this is not difficult.
- Polyester, microfiber, boucle. Stains on them can be cleaned with available means. Strength is high.
- Jacquard. Wear-resistant threads of multiple weave adequately resist the claws of furry couch potatoes.
- Velours. Fine pile is easy to clean with a vacuum cleaner.
- Natural cotton or linen fabrics are good and quite durable due to their rough structure and thickness. But you should remember their cost.
Before choosing any upholstery, you cannot forget about the installation option. If all sides of the sofa will be visible, it is important that the fabric behind the backrest looks no less attractive than the front.
Filler
Inside any upholstered furniture there is a spring block and filler. The first is an important condition for the longest possible use of the sofa. Without springs, the structure will become unusable within the first year of use, especially if the furniture is purchased for sleeping. Next, the filler:
- Horsehair and coconut fiber
. They add rigidity to pillows and are natural hypoallergenic materials. Cost is proportional to durability. - Polyurethane foam
. Ambiguous material. When choosing, you should focus on the brand’s reputation - a conscientious manufacturer never uses low-quality polymers. The defect manifests itself as dents even when “trying on” the sofa at the time of purchase. - Sintepon
. Available, cheap material that holds its shape well. However, over time it ages and falls apart. Most often used to add softness to the top layer of polyurethane foam. Sofas filled only with padding polyester are too soft and uncomfortable.
Almost timeless models of corner sofas with natural latex fillings. Durable, moderately tough, holds its shape well - these are its positive characteristics.
Additional items
The presence of additional parts on the corner sofa greatly facilitates and prolongs its operation. These include armrests, legs and poufs. More details:
- Armrests reduce the load on the sofa by evenly distributing pressure across the frame. In modern models they can be located either on the sides or in the middle of the corner. The latter is convenient, as it is in the form of a shelf where it is convenient to store books and magazines, as well as gadgets that always get lost.
As a rule, they are made of wood, varnished or have a matte sheen. But they can be upholstered in leather or fabric to match the design of the entire sofa. You will have to take more care of the armrests than the entire surface, given their active use.
- Poufs. Separate soft blocks, made in full accordance with the design of the sofa, are very comfortable. They are used as a footrest, an independent seat (in front of a mirror, for example), or when laying out a sofa for sleeping, using special fastenings.
- Legs. The upholstered furniture on them allows for thorough cleaning of the floor in the room and the existing covering - carpets, rugs. Since the load on them is the greatest, before purchasing you should make sure that the legs are reliable - they should be proportional to the width of the main length of the sofa. As a rule, the details are made in accordance with the overall design of the furniture, so they do not cause dissonance with the interior.
Additional details also include pillows and thoughts. Made in traditional or futuristic forms (rollers, rolls, ovals), they will give additional comfort to the owners and their friends while spending time together.
Bedroom and corner sofa
Corner sofas have different designs. They can be folding or stationary. If you have a one-room apartment or if there is an urgent need for one more bed, then with such upholstered furniture you can safely assume that in this way the interior of a bedroom with a corner sofa is created.
Corner sofas have impressive dimensions, with which, when unfolded, they are in no way inferior to a regular double bed. There is one plus - when folded, such sofas are economical compared to beds, since they take up much less space.
But all the advantages of corner sofas do not end there. Typically, such sofa models are equipped with spacious drawers designed for storing bed linen and blankets.
If you plan to use the sofa as another sleeping place, then when purchasing it you should carefully check the quality of the materials used in its production, the mechanisms used and the upholstery fabric. It is very important to pay attention to all this, so that when you frequently use the sofa, unfolding and folding, it does not break. Usually, for such higher quality models of corner sofas you will have to pay a little more, but it is justified. After all, no one wants to change their “soft friend” after just a few years of using it.

As you know, the Chinese system of Feng Shui teaches us to live in accordance with the laws of the universe, nature, in harmony with the world around us. And it turns out that our lives are even influenced by what we buy and how we arrange it in the apartment. To attract positive changes into your life, when choosing a sofa, you should follow some rules of Feng Shui.
Choosing a sofa according to Feng Shui
When choosing, give preference to models of muted, soft tones. For upholstery, velvet or velor with patterns in the form of smooth lines and waves is best suited. The shape of the sofa should be streamlined, without sharp transitions and sharp corners. The fact is that rounded objects have a positive effect on people, unlike triangular and square ones. The teaching of Feng Shui explains this fact by the fact that all objects of natural origin have round, soft shapes, but acute angular shapes practically do not exist in nature. But in the world of technological progress, we are constantly surrounded by corners and rectangular shapes, and we should not aggravate the situation by purchasing furniture of this type. In addition, when choosing the location of the sofa, try to ensure that it “cuts off” the corners. To do this, the sofa can be placed diagonally in relation to the corner.
In order to attract good luck and improve well-being using Feng Shui, you need to create conditions for the unhindered movement of positive energy throughout your home. It must be remembered that the main obstacles to this energy are massive furniture, bulky objects and sharp corners.
For a small room, you should choose a sofa of appropriate dimensions that will not stick out with sharp corners and volumes. A sofa that is too large clutters up and overloads the space, contributing to the stagnation of positive energy, and as a result, nothing good happens in a person’s life.
In addition, according to Feng Shui, furniture should have a certain height. For a sofa, this parameter is 105 cm, and the seat height should be 38 cm. At the same time, the presence of legs is mandatory, otherwise, if the sofa fits tightly to the floor, the flow of energy will be blocked, causing a feeling of discomfort.
Sofa location according to Feng Shui
The location of the furniture also plays an important role. Sofas are best placed along the walls or, together with armchairs, around a small coffee table. This arrangement of furniture promotes the exchange of energy between household members and their guests, pleasant communication and good health. At the same time, try to leave the center of the room free - there is no place for the sofa in the middle, because this arrangement, again, blocks the flow of positive energy, and as a result, family and financial problems.
Using a sofa according to Feng Shui
The sofa must be used for its intended purpose, this is very important! For example, by putting things on a sofa or chair, you destroy the energy that is responsible for success in your personal life and at work.
According to Feng Shui, the multifunctionality of the sofa is a huge plus! Folding sofas are used for their intended purpose both day and night, which prevents positive energy from stagnating.
Old sofas from a Feng Shui point of view
According to the teaching, you should part with old things and unnecessary furniture without regret. This is especially true when moving. The fact is that all this not only takes up unnecessary space, but also does not allow something necessary, beautiful and new to come into our lives.
Feng Shui does not recommend purchasing used sofas, even antique ones. After all, the history of this furniture is unknown to us, and by purchasing it, we risk inadvertently letting into our lives the negative energy of the destinies, events and lives of the previous owners of the sofa. However, if you inherited an antique sofa from loved ones and close relatives, then, on the contrary, it will contribute to well-being and prosperity, and protect your home from adversity.
No. 6. Space for additional zones
You can organize a compact workplace . To do this, you can use a corner computer desk, but it is better to place it closer to the window. All the necessary accessories will be located on the shelves of the table; you can use a couple of wall shelves or the rack mentioned above.
If the living room is combined with a bedroom , then it is better to place the bed away from the entrance to the room, fence it off with a screen, curtain, closet, or shelf system. Often the living room also plays the role of a dining room . In this case, it is better to place the dining table at a minimum distance from the kitchen, and furniture, for example, a sofa or chair with its back turned, is optimal for zoning.
Seven times measure cut once
So, the answers to the main questions have been found: you have approximately determined the dimensions of the future sofa, its shape and place in the room. Now it’s time to remember that you will have other furniture, and think about the relative position of the sofa relative to other interior items.
It is best to mark using a plan: on paper or in a special program. First, carefully draw a diagram, observing the dimensions and indicating windows, doors, heating radiators, and ventilation shafts. After that, try to draw the arrangement for all the furniture. The most convenient scale is 1:20.
Arrange the furniture so that it is convenient to approach it and that there is free space for opening closet doors and unfolding the bed. In this regard, a computer program is more convenient than pencil and paper, because everything in it can be moved with one mouse movement, and also shown in the form of a drawing and in the form of a 3D model.
It is not advisable to place the sofa close to the window opening, because it will cover the radiator and make it difficult to access the window for ventilation. Also make sure that it does not interfere with the opening of doors and balconies.
Drawing a plan is the best answer to the question of how to properly place a sofa: you will immediately understand what dimensions the model will suit you and whether it will be straight or angular. If you find it difficult to arrange furniture yourself, contact a designer for help.
