“Snake” springs for sofas: advantages and disadvantages

The “snake” spring got its name due to its peculiar sinuous shape, reminiscent of the body of a snake when moving.

In most cases, it is used as a filler for sofas and chairs. Upholstered furniture made using snake springs has good orthopedic qualities.

Let's tell you more about popular springs. This will allow you to independently determine whether it is good or bad for you if there is a “snake” installed in the sofa.

Characteristic

Springs for the sofa “Snake” are a filler for upholstered furniture that has a tortuous shape. The material of manufacture is high-carbon metal of varying thickness. The thickness and frequency of placement of springs depends on the type, size and purpose of the product. Despite the fact that serpentine springs can be installed on all types of furniture, experts recommend not purchasing furniture with a serpentine spring unit for daily use. Application area:

  • beds;
  • sofas;
  • couches;
  • mattresses;
  • armchairs;
  • backs of upholstered furniture.

The presence of constant pressure can lead not only to a decrease in the orthopedic effect, but also to breakage of the steel wire.

To extend the service life, sofa springs are coated with a special protective coating that prevents the appearance of corrosive areas.

Good or bad?

Like any spring block, the “Snake” design has a number of advantages and disadvantages.

Advantages:

  • ability to withstand high load levels;
  • increasing the service life of furniture;
  • long-term retention of shape;
  • ease of installation;
  • ease of transportation;
  • no creaking;
  • presence of anti-corrosion coating;
  • maintaining natural ventilation;
  • long period of operation;
  • affordable price range.

Due to the rigidity of the frame and the absence of a rolling effect, this type of spring is often more convenient than other models.

Flaws:

  • low depreciation rates;
  • impossibility of use in folding furniture.

What is a spring block?

A spring block is a structure consisting of one or more springs that work in compression. In mattresses and sofas it absorbs the impact of the weight of a sleeping person. Thanks to spring blocks, upholstered furniture “does not sag” during operation, it is comfortable and functional.

The spring block contains springs made of hardened high-carbon steel. The shock-absorbing properties of the block depend on the number of springs, the diameter of the coils and the properties of the steel.

Varieties

Today, you can find upholstered furniture on sale not only with “Snake” springs, but also with the following spring blocks, which differ in their properties and parameters.

  • Independent orthopedic - separate springs that are wrapped in a special case. Advantages - high point elasticity, ergonomic indicators, uniform load distribution, orthopedic effect, high level of comfort, absence of metal creaking.
  • Bonnell is a set of spirals with a rigid connection to each other, which allows you to distribute the load level as evenly as possible. Advantages: softness, comfort, durability, affordable price range.

Opting for independent blocks

The sofa can be made on a metal frame or a wooden frame. But if independent springs are installed there, this significantly increases the level of attractiveness of the furniture from the standpoint of healthy sleep.

Here, each spring is placed in a special case and glued with other similar cases. Elastic materials or special fabrics are used for the cover.

Such sofas are obtained:

  • silent;
  • not causing vibrations of the person sleeping nearby;
  • orthopedic;
  • safer for the spine.

It is precisely due to the orthopedic effect that such sofas are valued very highly in the furniture market.

Yes, independent springs affect the cost, which increases compared to using a bonnel. But the overpayment is fully justified. In addition, the difference is not several times, but literally 20-30%. Depends on the specific manufacturer.

Tips for choosing

The correct choice of a spring block is the key to long-term use of furniture and comfortable rest. When purchasing upholstered furniture, you must consider the following basic parameters:

  • diameter of the wound circle;
  • thickness of metal elements;
  • height;
  • number of bends in 1 m2.

We should not forget about the general parameters:

  • level of resistance to loads;
  • period of operation;
  • orthopedic indicators;
  • air exchange intensity;
  • level of elasticity and rigidity.

All spirals must be packed in a special non-woven material, and to create structural integrity, all parts are united by a metal frame. To fill the gaps, it is permissible to use latex, coconut coir, memorix, horsehair, and felt.

The following points must also be taken into account:

  • purpose of the structure;
  • transformation type;
  • the need for an orthopedic effect;
  • quality of internal filler;
  • adequacy of the price range.

You should purchase any interior item only from large retail chains that sell quality goods from well-known manufacturers. It is mandatory to have all quality certificates and permits, which is a guarantee of the safety and durability of upholstered furniture.

Mounting features

The “Snake” spring is an internal element of upholstered furniture, which has a simple installation system and can be mounted both inside the frame and directly on a wooden frame. In order to secure the product, experts recommend using the following types of fasteners:

  • clip;
  • hinged bar.

A clip is a simple fastening element that looks like a cold-worked steel strip coated with LDPE. These parameters allow the structure to withstand high levels of load and prevent the appearance of squeaking at the point of contact between the bracket and the spring. For ease of fastening and increasing the speed of work, experts recommend making auxiliary grooves. The hinged bar is a more advanced fastener that does not require additional measurements during installation, which significantly increases the speed of work.

To prevent contact of iron with the upholstery, it is imperative to use polyurethane material.

Upholstered furniture is the main piece of furniture, the quality and parameters of which determine not only the quality of sleep, but also the degree of comfort of rest. Given the increased demand for sofas, beds and armchairs, manufacturers produce a wide range of furniture that differs in design, color and design features. The type of spring block is the main criterion for choosing a product.

Despite the variety of types, the most popular for many years are “Snake” springs, which are distinguished by their simplicity of design, versatility and orthopedic properties. Before making the final choice, you need to carefully study the properties of the springs, as well as check their quality and, if possible, correct installation.

The types of spring blocks are discussed in the following video.

The tortuous shape of the spring, resembling a snake in shape, improves the orthopedic properties of sofas and chairs. However, consumers often wonder: is a “snake” spring in a sofa good or bad? What is the advantage of upholstered furniture that has such a structure? Let's try to understand this in detail.

Fastening snake springs in a sofa

Special springs are made of durable steel, which is given the desired bend at high temperatures. The finished product is treated with a special agent to protect against corrosion. Installing springs in upholstered furniture is a fairly simple process. Usually experienced craftsmen can easily cope with this. The spring is attached inside the frame or on it.

The curved shape of special fasteners guarantees the reliability of the entire structure. The number of fasteners depends on the shape and dimensions of the furniture. The furniture frame obtained in this way retains its stability for many years. And thanks to the polyurethane layer located between the frame and the snake spring, hard materials do not come into contact with the upholstery.

One of the main advantages of furniture that has such a spring in its design is improved performance characteristics - the service life of products can reach over 20 years. Serpentine springs can withstand high mechanical loads. In addition, they do not produce noise and allow natural ventilation of the furniture to be maintained. Elasticity and the absence of the “rolling” effect make such models as comfortable as possible.

Advantages of the “snake” spring block

The “snake” design is one of the most popular on the market; manufacturers often use it in the manufacture of sofas. The main advantages of furniture with such filling include:

  • the ability to withstand impressive loads while maintaining its original shape;
  • ease of transportation and installation;
  • quiet operation;
  • excellent ventilation of the spring block;
  • the ability to retain body heat for a long time, which affects the comfort of use and well-being;
  • increasing product service life;
  • affordable cost (the price depends on the materials used, the manufacturer and design features, but on average it remains in an acceptable range).

The orthopedic qualities of products with serpentine springs determine their therapeutic effect: they are often recommended by doctors to improve well-being.

Independent spring block

In this type of spring block, a separate cover is made for each spring from non-woven material - spunbond, fibertex and other similar ones.

Thus, it turns out that the independent springs in the mattress are not directly connected to each other. Any of them compresses as the load is applied to it and does not depend on the others. Typically, such structures are additionally glued with spunbond on both sides, which allows them to maintain the geometric shape and dimensions of the block.

In blocks of this type, springs of a much smaller diameter are used when compared with Bonnell system springs. Accordingly, this increases their number by 1 square. m., due to which the mattress becomes denser, more elastic and flexible. The number of springs usually ranges from 265 to 1000 or more pieces per 1 square meter. m. However, experts say: the optimal option is no more than 350 pcs. per 1 sq. m. In their opinion, if there are more springs, then they bend on the sides, touching others and dragging them along with them, and this does not have the best effect on the anatomical qualities of the product.

The price category of blocks of independent springs compared to Bonnell blocks is much higher. Their production is expensive, since each cylindrical or barrel spring must be sewn into a separate fabric pocket. And only then are they connected together. In this case, the connections must be extremely concentric so that each spring has the opportunity to fully demonstrate its elastic properties. This makes it possible to achieve an anatomical effect: the mattress follows the contours of the human body, the spine of a lying person remains straight, and the back muscles are relaxed. In combination with certain fillers, this will significantly reduce the risk of spinal diseases.

It should be noted that due to the high price, mattresses with an independent spring block are not available to everyone, unlike Bonnell blocks. That is why, for their simplicity, reliability and cost-effectiveness, Bonnell system mattresses continue to remain no less popular than in the last century. Although their technology, of course, has been seriously improved, this has had virtually no effect on the increase in price - it still remains low and affordable.

Disadvantages of the “snake” spring block

Experts did not find any particular disadvantages with this furniture. The negative aspects include the lack of depreciation. For example, under the influence of the body weight of a sitting person, the base may sag, and an attempt to rise independently will lead to the person sinking even further into it. However, such problems usually occur in people who are very overweight.

In addition, at the beginning of operation, the softness of the base will be unusual for lovers of hard surfaces. But this minus is insignificant - you can quickly get used to the features of this type of furniture. Due to the excellent performance characteristics of the snake spring block, it has gained great popularity in the market in recent years.

What to look for when purchasing

The right choice will ensure long-term and reliable operation of the furniture, so when purchasing you need to consider the following points:

  • degree of resistance to mechanical loads;
  • indicators of rigidity and elasticity;
  • orthopedic qualities;
  • service life specified by the manufacturer.

In addition, the design features of the product can affect the service life of the product. When choosing furniture, it is worth considering its purpose, as well as the conditions in which it will be used. If an orthopedic effect is required, it is worth checking the quality of the internal filler, the reliability of the fastening elements and transforming mechanisms.

When looking for high-quality furniture, it is better to give preference to large chain stores that sell goods from well-known manufacturers. They have all the necessary quality certificates that guarantee safe operation.

SofaFurniture

A good sofa is not only beautiful upholstery and a fashionable shape, but also its filling , on which it will be comfortable to relax. Often this piece of furniture becomes a place to sleep; people read or watch TV on it for a long time. Therefore, it is important how comfortably you can place body parts on a sleeping place, especially if you have problems with your joints or back. Such convenience largely depends on the design of the springs filling the sofa from the inside.

Disadvantages of Bonnell blocks

Despite all the obvious advantages, the Bonnell design is considered somewhat outdated. Modern furniture manufacturers offer models of new spring blocks that surpass Bonnell in their technical characteristics.

What are the disadvantages of mattresses based on this system?

  • In extremely rare cases, when the unit is operated under heavy loads, the fastening may fail, break and straighten the spring. A strong spring breaks through both the filler and the cover. It will no longer be possible to sleep in this place.
  • The orthopedic properties of the Bonnell system are not perfect enough. When using a mattress, the so-called “hammock effect” is noticeable when the springs located nearby are compressed. This occurs due to the bonding of the springs to the frame. This effect is especially noticeable if two people sleep in the bed: the disturbance of the surface is also felt by the other person, who does not create it himself.
  • Mattresses with a Bonnell spring block are pressed down over time, which, of course, affects their comfort. To avoid this, it is recommended to turn the mattress about once every six months.
  • After a few years, the mattress may begin to creak, as the spring fastenings become loose under load. To eliminate this defect, manufacturers offer a more modern version in which the springs are reinforced with blocks of very dense polyurethane foam. This makes it possible to double the service life of the product and increase the permissible load to 180 kg.

Advice

The website Mschistota.ru recommends choosing Bonnell for a single bed. But it can also be quite appropriate as a marital bed, as long as the difference in the load on the sleeping places is not too great (preferably no more than 20 kg), so that the “hammock effect” already mentioned above is not created. And the increased strength of the structure has long been appreciated by children who love to jump and play on such mattresses without causing them any harm.

Despite certain shortcomings, Bonnell is an excellent option for those who want to maintain the optimal proportion of price and quality. To explain this more clearly, let’s compare Bonnell with more modern mattresses with an independent spring block.

Why is the filler called “snake”?

The twisting shape of a metal spiral, such as a snake takes while moving, gave the inventors of furniture improvements an idea of what to call the spring filler in upholstered sofas and chairs.

The “snake” is formed at high temperature . This is the only way to bend strong, rigid steel to the required parameters. To prevent the spring from rusting, it is treated with an anti-corrosion compound. Place the finished workpiece in the frame, where it is securely fixed with a special fastener. To prevent the “snake” from touching the upholstery and damaging it, a polyurethane layer . Sofas with this inner padding are in consumer demand.

The reasons for this popularity are the following factors:

  • Resistance to loads while maintaining shape under a heavy body.
  • Long service life without defects or repairs.
  • Quiet operation with no annoying squeaks.
  • Ventilation properties, the sofa “breathes” and does not have adverse effects on the health of the occupant.
  • There are no holes, bumps, or uneven spots on the bed.
  • Easy installation and transportation.

Upholstered furniture with a “snake” installed inside is endowed with an orthopedic effect , so doctors recommend sleeping on such a lounger if patients have problems with the skeletal system.

The developers tried to get rid of the previous shortcomings of springs and made the spiral more stable. Previously, if obese riders tried to stand up, they had difficulty doing so, as they sank so deeply into the seat. Today, sofas are soft and elastic at the same time; they do not allow your figure to sink. The assembly of such structures is also simple, which the craftsmen do with pleasure.

Spring blocks and their characteristic features

Furniture designers have always tried to improve the sofa not only in its shape, but also to make the core more comfortable and remove all operational disadvantages. This is how fillers appeared, assembled into dependent and independent spring blocks, which differ:

  1. The diameter of the wound circle.
  2. Height.
  3. Thickness of metal blanks.
  4. The number of bends per square meter.

The basic technology has not changed, and the requirements for the product remain the same in relation to:

  • Weight resistant.
  • Period of use.
  • Orthopedic properties.
  • Air exchange.
  • Standards of elasticity and rigidity.

Independent blocks are an assembly of barrel-shaped untouchable elements . Each steel spiral was packaged in durable non-woven material, the cells were connected by gluing them with tape or installed in a restrictive metal frame. The result was a block united into a single whole.

The following is used as a filler for the gaps between the covers:

  • Latex.
  • Coconut coir.
  • Memorix.
  • Horsehair.
  • Felt.

Sofas with independent spring cells:

  1. Maintains the curvature of the spine.
  2. They serve for a long time.
  3. They don't creak.

The type of another spring filler, which is a dependent structure, was called “Bonnel” . In such a block, the connections differ in the configuration of the spirals. There are only 5 turns , and in the middle they are smaller in size than at the top and bottom.

The ligament gives the load area an even distribution, the springs under the body do not creak. Clear fixation with high-carbon wire and 2 frames makes the mattress stable, with no displacement or swaying between the elements. To soften the metal filler, it is covered with soft felt or padding polyester.

Bonnel spring block

The Bonnel spring block has proven itself well and is widely used in the production of our exclusive sofas. This is a unique mechanism, thanks to the strength of which you can enjoy your favorite upholstered furniture for a long time without thinking about buying new one.

What are the advantages of this mechanism?

  • The springs in this block are interconnected with special strength and have great endurance. On one square meter there are from 110 to 150 springs , having up to four to five turns. The price of a mattress will vary in proportion to their quantity.
  • The springs are fastened together in such a way as not to touch each other and not produce an unpleasant squeak. They have a bicone structure and special devices on the extreme parts of the spirals, which contribute to the reliability of their fastening.
  • The property of products filled Bonnel spring block This allows it not to sag, withstanding a fairly large weight - up to 180 kg, as well as various actions, such as jumping and falling.
  • Mattresses with a Bonnell spring block are used in folding sofas, book sofas, Eurobooks and many others.
  • The dependent spring block is used in the production of both single-sided and double-sided mattresses.
  • The price of such mattresses is lower than independent ones, so this spring block, the reviews of which are quite favorable, is popular in the production of upholstered furniture for the home.

Separately, it is worth noting that the ability to adapt to the anatomical properties of the body of such products is lower than that of furniture that has an independent spring block . If you suffer from back pain, be sure to consult a professional before purchasing a sofa, day bed or bed.

Common features of different designs

Upholstered furniture, the seat of which has a spring base, regardless of what type of assembly is chosen by the manufacturer, has a steel spiral inside.

The common ones are:

  • The designer’s efforts to create a model that is updated in shape, but still capable of providing a person with complete rest.
  • The springs can withstand loads and there is no discomfort during sleep.
  • Shaping surfaces to fit a figure.
  • Long service life without deformation.
  • No squeaks.
  • The filler is high quality and environmentally friendly.

Sofa manufacturers are trying to produce products at prices affordable to all categories of buyers.

Highlights

Furniture springs are assembled using different assembly methods.

Therefore it turns out different:

  1. Orthopedic property . In independent designs this effect is more pronounced.
  2. Bonnels connected by wire can be pressed through under load in one area and in the rest; mattresses have insufficient ability to take the shape of the body.
  3. Spirals are laid on materials of different quality and composition; the principle of fastening is different in all models.
  4. A sofa with a “snake” cannot be folded out ; they begin to sag from long-term use.
  5. Seats with independent springs are raised too high , which is inconvenient for sofas, more suitable for beds.

It must be taken into account that furniture with the highest orthopedic properties is not a therapeutic instrument by its intended purpose; it only relieves muscle tension and gives rest to the organs.

What types of spring blocks are there?

Spring block - what is it? This is an internal filler used in the manufacture of mattresses and upholstered furniture. It is a structure of springs connected to each other in different ways and attached to the frame in different ways. Such structures allow you to support the spine of the person lying on them in the correct position.

The main types of spring blocks today are:

  • Bonnell, relating to blocks of dependent type;
  • blocks with independent springs.

Both the first and second have their own advantages and disadvantages. The Bonnell block is a classic in furniture production; it has been used for over a hundred years. Many consider it outdated, but in addition to its affordable price, it also has other advantages. Modern mattresses with independent springs are considered more technologically advanced and comfortable, but they are also much more expensive. Let's look at this in more detail, starting with the characteristics of the Bonnell block.

Who will be the best for each model?

It is impossible to imagine the decoration of rooms without upholstered furniture . A person with a bad back is better suited to a hard sleeping place; a mattress with an independent spring filler is endowed with all the properties for this case.

Bonnell is also hard and elastic, but distributes the load worse. “Snakes” have the lowest orthopedic properties compared to similar products, poor shock absorption, but you don’t have to sleep there; you can choose an item solely for watching movies.

In any case, you must follow the doctor's recommendations if you have problems with the musculoskeletal system or the spine. Healthy people pay attention to the price, appearance and manufacturer's company. But you need to look at the totality of properties of a commercial product, its structural components and internal structure.

The type of spring block is an important criterion when choosing sofas, sofas, and mattresses for beds. Many people prefer to purchase interior items with orthopedic properties, where the “Snake” spring, a modern type of strengthening the filler, is used as an elastic base.

Spring elements, shaped like a moving snake, are often mounted on small bases:

  • in the soft backs of chairs;
  • armchairs;
  • car seats.

It is difficult to imagine modern furniture production without snake springs.

Spring block

The spring block is not modern, but is still popular

Spring block

They are distinguished depending on several factors:

  • thickness of the metal rod that is used for the spring
  • number of springs per 1 sq. m
  • spring diameter
  • spring height

These data together determine the anatomy of the sofa, i.e. its ability to adapt to the position and structure of the body. Springs made of thinner rods and small diameters better support the body and follow its contours. The total number of such springs per 1 sq. m. affects the ability of the product to withstand heavy weight and the period of operation.

Advantages:

  • long period of operation
  • ability to withstand heavy body weight
  • reliability
  • orthopedic properties beneficial for the spine
  • smooth surface, with sufficient elasticity and rigidity
  • good air and moisture exchange

Flaws:

  • Over time a squeak appears
  • expensive repairs

Manufacturers of upholstered furniture prefer a spring block as a filler. The level of anatomy directly determines the level of comfort.

There are 2 types of spring blocks

The rigid connection between the springs affects comfort

1A dependent spring block or bonnel block is a structure where all the springs are connected to each other by wire. This connection prevents proper load redistribution. This affects the convenience of this type of filler. Therefore, it is used in the budget category of furniture.

Springs are made from high quality steel. To connect them, high-carbon steel wire with knots is used. Everything is secured with lower and upper metal frames. The total number of springs depends on the manufacturer. In this design it is 100-150 pcs/sq. m.

The bonnel block is very reliable and resilient. It is capable of holding heavy loads. People weighing more than 100 kg can safely use such a unit. Metal frames make the structure even more stable, because eliminate swaying and sideways movement of elements. This increases the service life of the unit.

The top of the springs is covered with additional filler, such as felt, padding polyester, or other materials. This softens the feel of the springs, making the product more comfortable.

A good option for a sofa in the living room.

Each of the springs is an independent element

21In an independent spring block, the springs are an independent element, because are not directly connected to each other. Each of them is placed in a separate case (pocket). The covers are made of non-woven textile fabric, such as spunbond, fibertex, non-woven fabric.

Non-woven fabrics have the maximum level of strength and are environmentally friendly. The material is not subject to rotting, which prevents the development of bacteria and fungi. Has good resistance to all types of friction.

The covers are attached to each other using flexible connections, which allow each spring to individually demonstrate its elastic qualities. The structure itself is additionally glued with non-woven fabric on both sides. Due to this, its shape is strengthened. Block deformation is eliminated. It is protected from mechanical impact. Springs are used from thin wire and small diameter, and their number in this design reaches 350 pcs/sq. m and above. These characteristics indicate a high level of comfort of the filler. It is not subject to sagging or vibration when changing body position, and is silent in use.

This design distributes the load pointwise and follows the contours of the body, ensuring the correct position of the spine regardless of how the person is positioned.

The price of such a block, compared to a Bonnell block, is significantly higher. This is explained by the fact that manufacturing the structure requires more time, labor, and costs.

A good sofa option for good sleep and relaxation. Such a filler will not solve back problems, but will help cope with fatigue and tension in the muscles, and relieve the load on the spine.

Properties

Orthopedic upholstered furniture is popular due to the design features of the products and the performance properties of the materials used.

A spring block with flat “snakes” is made by assembly. The characteristics of the components depend on:

  • on the thickness of the wire bent in one plane;
  • physical parameters of steel, resistance of the metal to corrosion damage under the influence of high humidity (carbon alloys are coated with a protective layer of zinc);
  • bend heights, the parameter is indicated in the technical specifications;
  • coil pitch, many types of “snakes” are available, designed for different tensile loads.

The elasticity of upholstered furniture and orthopedic mattresses depends on the choice of the type of spring elements. Standards for elasticity and rigidity have been developed. Rigid springs are made from thick wire, with a long coil length and fine pitch.

Furniture with snake-like spring elements has certain advantages:

  • soft bases are designed for heavy weight, are made with a large margin of safety, and are able to maintain their shape under the weight of obese people;
  • orthopedic mattresses, seats are used for a long time, have good wear resistance;
  • the metal is not subject to fatigue deformation and is protected from corrosion;
  • individual springs are convenient to mount and dismantle and replace if necessary;
  • there is no swing effect;
  • when using springs, they do not produce grinding, creaking, or other unpleasant sounds, and operate silently;
  • the filler, secured with a “snake”, is well ventilated, providing the necessary air exchange, this has a positive effect on the well-being of a person relaxing on a sofa or bed;
  • orthopedic interior items have a smooth surface;
  • tearing of the upholstery is excluded, there will be no accidental injuries from the spring ends, they are tightly fixed to the base;
  • The furniture is light and easy to transport.

Despite the low depreciation rates, “snakes” are replacing other types of spring blocks.

Independent spring block

All independent spring blocks are distinguished by the fact that each spring is placed in a separate case made of durable, breathable material; the blocks are arranged in rows on the base of the mattress close to each other. They work entirely independently. The impact on one or more springs does not cause compression of the others. This achieves better orthopedic properties; the body has a more correct position during rest. The service life of such blocks is 7-10 years.

Many mattresses have springs of different stiffnesses that have different shock-absorbing properties. They respond individually to different areas of the human body. They are called multi-zone

. The minimum number of zones is 3, the maximum is 15. The most common are three-five-seven-zone ones. This is due to the fact that individual parts of the human body have different weights; to maintain the natural position of each part, its own value of spring resistance is required. Seven-zone mattresses include: the area of the head, shoulders, torso to the lower back, pelvis, hips, knees, feet.

Reinforced spring blocks

made from thicker wire with greater rigidity. They are designed for weights from 120 kg.

By design, independent springs are divided into:

  • TFK or Pocket Spring . The most popular standard block contains barrel-shaped six-turn springs with a diameter of 5-6 cm. The density of their arrangement is from 220 pcs. up to 300 pcs. per 1 sq. m. Attracts consumers with an affordable price and acceptable orthopedic qualities.

  • Copper Coil . It is a modification of the TFK block. Springs made of copper-plated steel are arranged in the form of a honeycomb, which allows you to place a larger number of them on a unit area - 300 pieces. per 1 sq. m. Accordingly, the mattress turns out to be more rigid and can withstand a lot of weight.
  • Hour Glass
    . The Hour Glass spring block is an hourglass, with the same spring diameter it has a large number of turns - 7.5, with an additional support turn. The spring is pre-loaded and secured with a cover. The middle part of the spring is specially hardened and has three levels of stiffness. Two such factors increase the load-bearing capacity of the mattress comfortably for the consumer. Great for when the two people sleeping on the mattress have a large weight difference.

  • Multipocket
    . Anatomical blocks are made with a smaller spring diameter (2-4 cm) and are located with greater density. One square meter accommodates from 500 to 1,000 pieces. This provides better rest due to softer body support. Significant advantages of these springs: high load-bearing capacity, excellent shock-absorbing properties, allowing you to relax more efficiently. The big disadvantage is the high price.

  • Micropocket
    . A block with springs with a diameter of 2.6 cm made of wire 0.8-1 mm thick is designed for a maximum load of 150 kg. The height of the spring is 13-14 cm, the number of turns is 12-14. Has minimal springing effect. It was not widely used due to the high price.
  • Dual Spring
    is a spring within a spring. External - withstands weight up to 100 kg, internal - up to 150 kg. A mattress with such springs is comfortable if people with sharply different weights sleep together. For 1 sq. m there are 256 external springs and 128 internal ones. These spring blocks did not become popular due to the high price.

Mounting features

Installation of springs inside the frame and on a wooden frame is allowed. The end is secured with a special clip or hinged bar. The polyurethane layer protects the upholstery from the effects of metal. In the direction of potential impact, towards the soft part of the furniture, a deflection with a height of 30 to 60 mm is provided, depending on the thickness of the filler. The amount of deflection is the same over the entire plane of the frame.

The regulated distance between the springs is from 8 to 10 cm. To form a mesh base, the snake springs are additionally secured with wire.

Bonnell spring block - what is it?

Sometimes Bonnel is unknowingly confused with ordinary spring mattresses, which tend to quickly sag, and their springs jump out, digging into the owner’s side. In fact, a completely different technology is used to produce Bonnell blocks. It’s no wonder that mattresses with such “filling” are still in demand among millions of customers.

So what are Bonnell spring blocks? They are classified as dependent spring blocks. This means that all elements in this design are interconnected. When manufacturing it using the Bonnell system, a special method of fastening bicone springs is used, in which the radius of the coil either increases or decreases. They are narrowed in the center and widen at the edges, having a kind of “waist”. This is precisely what allows you to evenly distribute the load of the human body, maintaining its correct position.

The springs are made of high-quality steel and are connected to each other by a special frame or high-carbon steel wire with knots. To prevent them from unwinding on their own, fastening is done on the first and last turns to the block, which consists of two frames: lower and upper. Special “locks” are made on the turns of the final spirals.

Specially designed springs are woven in a specific sequence. The method used here prevents them from touching each other, so they do not creak or rub. Depending on the manufacturer, the number of springs varies: from 100 to 150 pcs. per 1 sq. m. For example, the Bonnell spring block used in the popular Ascona series mattresses is made with a density of 118 pcs. per 1 sq.m.

An orthopedic mattress can be based on two types of spring weaving:

  • four-turn;
  • five-turn.

In the latter case, the block turns out to be slightly taller and will be somewhat more expensive.

Types of fasteners

Attaching springs to the base of upholstered furniture is done in two ways:

  1. Clips made from high-strength cold-worked steel tape. The metal is protected with a polymer, moisture-resistant, wear-resistant coating. Thanks to the PDV coating, creaking is eliminated during use of furniture when the clip and spring wire come into contact. The clip itself is attached to the wooden frame with hardware; for this there are two holes on the sides. Each “snake” is secured on both sides. Fastening clips are selected taking into account the parameters of the spring elements. Typically, clips are used for hard orthopedic mattresses designed for heavy weight.
  2. The hinge strip is a flat tape made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). The planks are fixed along the length of the frame on both sides, with “snakes” inserted between them. For this purpose, special fastening eyes are made at a certain step.

This fastening method is considered the most practical; installation time is reduced - no additional measurements of the distance between adjacent spring snakes are required. In terms of strength, hinged fastenings are slightly inferior to clip fastenings.
