Pros and cons of upholstered headboards for beds

Several advantages and disadvantages.

prosMinuses
Such bed headboards look more stylish and add originality to the interior. Quite large dimensions, which are not entirely suitable for small rooms.
They are distinguished by comfort and convenience. They have a fairly high cost.
Eliminates unnecessary injury and shock.Requires more frequent maintenance and thorough cleaning.

Advantages and disadvantages

Upholstered furniture for sleeping can become the main accent of a room, giving it individuality and sophistication. In addition to its stylish appearance, the model with an elastic headrest has a number of other advantages:

  1. Comfort - the soft backrest allows you to spend time reclining in bed: reading a book, watching TV.
  2. Increasing sound insulation - this point is relevant for apartments with thin walls. Thanks to the wide decorative headboard, the noise coming from the next room is less audible.
  3. Reducing the risk of injury - the upholstery will protect against bruises when hitting the sides of the furniture, which is important if there are children in the house.
  4. Availability of additional space - shelves at the head or on the sides of the bed can be used for small items, and bedding can be placed in the drawers.

The products also have negative sides. The most significant are:

  • large size - it is undesirable to place soft structures in small rooms;
  • Difficult to maintain - some models are equipped with a non-removable backrest, and the upholstery requires regular dry cleaning;
  • high cost - the price of structures is often higher than conventional models.

Some of the shortcomings can be leveled out by first thinking through key details: the permissible size of the bed, materials of manufacture, design of the berth, features of fastening the back and sides.

Upholstered headboard options

There are the following varieties.

High

A soft, large headboard or headboard reaching to the ceiling is particularly attractive and gives the atmosphere an elitist feel. In addition, such designs have an orthopedic mattress that promotes comfortable relaxation.

Low

It is as functional, practical, concise and simple to implement as possible. These models do not clutter up space

Curved

It is an expressive accent detail that allows you to turn the bed into the absolute central element of the entire interior.

Rectangular

A laconic and slightly strict option, which is a standard design solution for light classics, modern or many other styles. A rectangular model is often decorated with plain or patterned fabric.

Round

The semicircular shape has a very interesting appearance, which can significantly soften the interior space of the bedroom.

Carved

A bed with a soft figured headboard, for example, in the shape of a heart, a flower or other intricate figures, will undoubtedly give the decor light notes of aristocracy and some pretentiousness.

Oblique

It features easy adjustment and a comfortable and ergonomic design that provides very convenient use. Such lifting or removable models allow you not only to adjust the most convenient angle of inclination, but also, in case of contamination, to easily remove the backrest and clean it.

What material is used for soft backs?

When choosing fabric, not only the aesthetic, but also the operational parameters of this decorative product are taken into account. The most commonly used materials are:

  • Velours. Velor upholstery is in great demand; it has a truly elegant, attractive and respectable appearance and a rather pleasant glossy texture.
  • Leather. They are a classic design option, due to which the bed takes on an expensive and chic look. In addition, leather is particularly strong, durable and ideal for wet cleaning.
  • Eco-leather. It has a fairly reasonable price, while visually and tactilely it is no different from natural leather material. Eco-leather is absolutely hypoallergenic and safe for human health.
  • Velvet. Thanks to its soft texture and luxurious appearance, velvet gives the room elegance and at the same time coziness.

With the help of a variety of materials, it is possible to advantageously complement and decorate the interior composition, bring new shades to the room and create an unsurpassed design.

How to make a soft headboard yourself

A soft headboard for a bed can be made at home with minimal financial costs. Such furniture looks no less original than purchased furniture, and most importantly, it fully satisfies personal preferences.

Step No. 1 – preparing the frame.

A frame left over from an old bed is suitable for the job. If you don’t have it, you can buy lumber and make it yourself.

It is not necessary to purchase expensive materials; budget options are also suitable for creating a structure.

Wooden panels of suitable size must be attached to the back frame. It is not necessary to use wood, especially if you have old MDF or chipboard doors lying around in the garage.

The doors need to be screwed well to the frame

Visually, the resulting design looks rough, but at this stage no aesthetic appeal is required.

To fix the panels, you can use any available means, even hinges from old doors

Step No. 2 - creating holes for the fabric covering.

Marking places for future decorative buttons is the most complex and painstaking process. To simplify it, you can purchase a perforated Pegboard. It is important to use it exclusively for the template, since it is highly expensive.

Perforated tiles will be an excellent template for marking holes for fabric

Marking is carried out according to a certain algorithm.

  1. Measure the entire headboard to determine its center.
  2. Place a new mark three holes down from the center. You can use a marker or pencil for this.
  3. From the resulting point, measure 7 holes to the side and put a new mark at 8.
  4. The second row is shifted three holes to the side and down. The new point will be on the fourth hole of the tile.
  5. The result should be diamonds. Markings must be made on the entire backrest, with the exception of the place where the mattress will be located.

The markup should look like this

At the end of the work, you must carefully check that all marks are present on the headboard. It is not necessary to apply dots to the edges of the back; it is better to leave a few centimeters on all sides.

Now you need to make holes with a screwdriver at the prepared points. The diameter should not be too large; it is enough to make small holes so that the thread can be passed through freely.

For supply holes, it is enough to use a drill with a diameter of up to 5 millimeters.
Step No. 3 - fixing the foam rubber and fabric.
At this stage, you cannot do without waxed thread or twine, as well as ordinary buttons and a gypsy needle with a large eye. The use of twine is most preferable because it easily passes through dense materials. The main disadvantage of these threads is that they are easily untied.

The honeycomb side of the foam should be facing down. The edges must be carefully aligned, removing all excess. Using a furniture stapler, secure the sides and bottom edge of the foam, leaving the top intact.

Packaging foam is ideal for upholstered headboards

The foam needs to be draped on top using fabric. You can use any canvas you like. It is important to leave small margins of 30 centimeters at the edges. The headboard covered with fabric should be placed in a vertical position.

Step No. 4 – decorating buttons.

This is the most difficult stage of the entire project. It will require:

  • purchase a special set of blanks for decorative buttons;
  • follow the instructions on the packaging.

Buttons need to be covered to match the back design

In order for button binding to be successful, you need to follow several recommendations.

  1. All sets with button blanks are different. Even if you buy two identical ones, the mold of one package may not fit the buttons of the other. Therefore, it is better to prepare several sets and experiment with rubber molds.
  2. It is better to trim the fabric with a small margin. The excess can be cut off, but if there is not enough material, the problem cannot be corrected.
  3. Insert the fabric with the lid into the mold first from one side, and then insert the other.
  4. If you do not want to ever re-manipulate the formation of buttons, use high-quality glue. They should lubricate the edges of the button and only then insert its stem. It is not recommended to use a large amount of glue, as excess glue may come out over the edges of the part, ruining the fabric of the headboard.

More than 3 pieces of blank packaging for buttons will be required

Step No. 5 – the process of covering the headboard.

This stage will not be complete without waxed thread or twine, as well as regular buttons and a long needle with a large eye. Using twine is most preferable because it easily passes through foam and fabric. The main disadvantage of these threads is that they are easily untied.

First you need to insert a long piece of thread into the needle, then thread it through the button. To prevent the twine from slipping, it is better to thread it through all the holes, then make several tight knots.

The twine needs to be tightened well, making several knots

Now thread the needle through the holes you made earlier. You need to thread it from the back of the headboard, moving towards its front side, on which the decorative button is subsequently fixed. It is recommended to start from the central top hole.

Please note: the needle must be kept straight. When threading the needle, apply pressure to the foam from the front side. When the tip protrudes slightly, you can easily pull out the silt.

  1. Insert the needle into the eye of the button.
  2. After the first turn, thread the thread through the eye again.
  3. Carefully secure the decorated button, securing it from the wrong side.
  4. Excess thread tails can be removed.
  5. Tuck the fabric, forming beautiful folds on it.

To obtain a high-quality result, you need to be careful about fixing the buttons

Step No. 6 – pay attention to the top row.

After securing the first button, you need to stop and make the top fold. This manipulation is carried out with each subsequent button. After fixing the first four buttons, the fabric is pulled back and attached using a stapler.

Step No. 7 – fixing the fabric.

Once you've finished working on the buttons, you can begin securing the edges of the fabric. To do this, place the headboard on the floor with the wrong side up. To make the corners neat, you need to make bends, pulling the top side down, and then cover it with the side. At the end, the resulting fold should be secured with staples. The wrong side doesn’t have to look beautiful.

The front side should be perfect, the back side will be closed

Before fixing the bottom edges, the headboard should be placed upright again and any excess material on the legs should be trimmed away. The fabric that is on the front side of the leg does not need to be secured as it will be stretched at the back.

Step No. 8 – processing the wrong side.

You can use an old sheet to cover the unsightly parts of the back of the headboard. It is important that it is strong and does not break when pulled. It can be secured using:

  • carnations;
  • stapler.

After all the work is completed, you will get a stylish headboard

Bed shapes

Certain shapes can add not only uniqueness and originality to the bedroom, but also additional coziness and convenience.

  • Corner. This design differs from a regular bed by the presence of two additional backrests. The corner model fits especially organically into the decor and does not take up much space.
  • Round. It has high comfort levels, which contributes to creating the most comfortable and very stylish design.
  • Rectangular. A classic model that fits perfectly into any interior design with a conservative design.

The photo shows a girl's bedroom and a rounded bed with a dark purple headboard.

The shape of the bed can depend on the overall design of the room or, on the contrary, become the starting point for its formation. Designs on legs or on a podium with drawers will allow you to create a convenient storage system for bed linen.

What to pay attention to when choosing?!

The proportions of the sleeping area must fully correspond to the size of the room. Usually such beds look quite massive, which does not look very aesthetically pleasing in a small bedroom.

Additional options are welcome. In addition to external beauty, the bed should be comfortable, reliable and can be additionally equipped with bedside tables and a lifting mechanism.

The quality of raw materials is of great importance. Large furniture factories usually provide a full range of product certificates. During operation, close contact with the product is expected, so there should be no doubt about the origin of the materials; this can lead to serious health problems.

Ease of use does not always correspond to appearance. You can buy the most fashionable and luxurious bed, and then simply be disappointed, because existing stereotypes and sleeping habits may not correspond to the design.

Such a purchase is not made for a couple of months; in order to sleep comfortably for many years, you just need to “try on” the purchased piece of furniture and evaluate it in practice.

Headboard design options

Interesting design examples.

With three soft headboards

It is a rather unusual design, which, due to its safety, convenience and three protective soft sides, is especially often used in the design of children's rooms.

The photo shows a bed with three soft beige sides in the interior of a children's room.

With two backs

This model with two sidewalls located along adjacent walls is distinguished by a rather convenient and compact corner placement, allowing for proper organization of space.

With rhinestones

Rhinestone decor, combined with rich leather, velvet or velor trim, will give the space a special chic, aristocracy and showiness.

Carriage tie

Thanks to buttons or furniture nails with rhinestones recessed into the back, it is possible to achieve voluminous squares or diamonds that allow you to create a truly royal bed. The carriage screed or capitonne is incredibly popular in Baroque, Rococo or other luxurious palace styles.

With ears

Additional structural elements in the form of side ears, distinguished by very different shapes and depths, create the most comfortable atmosphere and cozy mood in the room.

Quilted

Due to this technique, the upholstery acquires special three-dimensional folds or even forms certain decorative patterns and designs.

Colored

Undoubtedly it becomes the main compositional center of the room, clearly attracting glances. A soft colored headboard will add color to the interior, depriving it of monotony and dullness.

Upholstered bed colors

The varied range of colors offers a huge variety of shades that have their own mood and character. The most popular in the interior are: brown, blue, beige, purple, black, pink, blue, white, gray bed or wenge-colored structure.

The soft design of a certain color can harmoniously fit into any environment and, depending on taste preferences, form an effective contrasting or calm monochrome design.

Manufacturing materials

To ensure that interior models with a headboard made of soft materials are as durable as possible and do not disappoint with quality, study the materials that are most often used for the manufacture of such furniture. The choice is really huge:

  • solid wood;
  • MDF;
  • chipboard;
  • metal.

Models made of natural wood, as in the photo below, are distinguished by the highest level of environmental friendliness. Solid wood does not contain toxic components or substances with increased background radiation. Furniture of this nature has a long service life (more than 10 years) and is highly resistant to wear, provided it is successfully coated to protect the surface from negative factors. Solid wood does not require special care, has a natural smell and a special texture.

Furniture made from such material is cheaper than solid wood, but in terms of external qualities it is no less worthy. The texture and color scheme are very diverse. You can find glossy, matte, solid wood texture, natural stone, and so on. Furniture made from MDF, decorated with a headboard made of soft puffs, looks very unconventional and stylish. The following photo will help you verify this.

Chipboard is the cheapest option with a limited service life compared to materials such as solid wood, MDF, and metal. The material is afraid of water, as it can swell upon contact with it. Such furniture is optimal for a child's room, because the child grows quite quickly, so his sleeping bed should be regularly replaced with a more spacious option. Look how beautiful a children's bed made of chipboard with a soft back is if you place it sideways to the window, as was done in the interior in the photo below.

Metal is durable and practical, technologically advanced and stylish, but a child’s room categorically does not accept a metal bed, and its presence in the bedroom may not be very comfortable.
