Pallets aren't just for food. They are used as stands for auto parts, chemical and other products. Due to the specific nature of the application, such pallets are treated with special impregnations with a toxic odor. They cannot be used for benches.

A similar situation applies to discarded pallets from grocery stores. Wood has the ability to absorb odors. If, for example, rotten vegetables have been lying on a pallet for a long time, it is impossible to remove such an “aroma.” Even after painting, it will not be very pleasant to rest on the bench.

Advice! Most often, unpleasant odors are absorbed into the surface layers of wood. Deep sanding of the boards with a sander sometimes helps to get rid of them.

Principles of working with pallets

You can make your own furniture from full or divided “boxes”. It’s easy to simply put the pallets together, fasten them together, and make a complex structure. Pallets can be used as a frame or a whole product.

The rough look of the wood can be left unchanged. More often the frame is processed with a sander, painted or varnished. The design can be supplemented with legs, wheels, doors, and textile pillows.

Manufacturing rules

The simplest structures for the garden are made from pallets. If you have the skills to work with wood, you can make furniture with your own hands from pallets no worse than designer furniture. Most often, craftsmen make bedside tables, small sofas, armchairs, and beds from pallets.

It’s easy to build a bedside table from pallets; it’s better to start making furniture with it. If you put a wooden structure on wheels, you get a coffee table. Necessary tools and consumables:

• hammer;
• screwdriver;
• wheels;
• fasteners;
• 1–2 pallets;

Assembly sequence:

• clean pallets;
• sand the boards using a drill or sandpaper;
• disassemble the pallet, pulling out the fasteners with a nail puller;
• make a tabletop from tightly laid edge-to-edge boards, securing them to two transverse planks nailed on the inside;
• nail a few more boards from the inside of the tabletop to create a place to store magazines.

If you need a coffee table, you can screw on the wheels - you get a low, flat structure, inside which it is convenient to store books and magazines. By combining two such items, they form a bedside table. From the remaining boards you can make drawers.

Armchair

To make a four-legged chair with two armrests, you will need the same tools as for the bedside table. Assembly is performed in the following sequence:

• the pallet is sawn crosswise - one part will be the back, the other - the seat;
• connect the back and seat at an angle using boards removed from the second pallet;
• legs and handrails are made from planks;
• the structure is assembled with self-tapping screws;
• furniture is treated with sandpaper, varnished or painted.

Bed

It is very easy to make a single or double bed without legs from pallets. To do this, they are installed directly on the floor and fastened with self-tapping screws, metal corners and plates. To work you will need:

• four pallets;
• carpet flooring;
• block measuring 40 x 60 cm.

Manufacturing procedure step by step:

• a frame is assembled from timber in the form of a frame with crossbars corresponding to the size of the pallets;
• clean the pallets of dirt and treat them with sandpaper;
• assemble the structure with self-tapping screws;
• Pallets are installed inside the frame and screwed to the frame;
• the pallets are covered with carpet on top;
• a mattress is placed on the structure.

The simplest shelving can be made by placing a pallet vertically with the wrong side out and fastening several boards transversely at the same distance from each other - they will be shelves. • saw the pallet in half;
• in one part, the boards that serve as supports for the pallet are removed;

A single pallet will serve as a table. It is better to further process the frame. For convenience, you can attach wheels.

If there is standard furniture around, then it is better to add legs to the pallet. For this you will need 1 more copy. The wooden “lattice” is simply sawn in half. The resulting parts are attached to the sides at the bottom of the product.

How to select and prepare a semi-finished product?

A standard pallet weighs about 20 kg, there are 2 types of packaging:

• standard domestic pallet - 1200x1000x120 mm;
• Euro pallet - 1200x800x120.

The quality of the latest packaging is higher, as meticulous Europeans carry out phytosanitary treatment of products. This guarantees the absence of bacteria and pests in the wood. Another advantage of the Euro pallet is that there is no need to grind the product for a long time. Protruding nails are also not typical for her.

These “semi-finished products” are purchased at construction sites. To get a decent product, it must be examined from all sides. Cracks and a bluish tint to the wood are undesirable; it indicates the low quality of the pallet assembled from raw material. Good pallets are marked with special marks - the marks “EUR”, “EPAL”, “FIN”.

What is the processing?

It's not complicated. Stages of product preparation:

• cleaning of dirt those pallets that were previously “laborers”;
• sanding with sandpaper, a drill with a sanding attachment or a grinding machine;
• primer: oil if the table will be at home, and acrylic when it is destined for the fate of a “mongrel”;
• painting, if it is included in the project;
• varnishing

Wood, which is susceptible to fungi, mold, insects and rodents, is always treated with antiseptics. This step is necessary if domestic pallets are purchased. Such preparation of products is a guarantee of the reliability and durability of future pieces of furniture.

Kitchen or desk

It is not difficult to make a standard table from the option described above. It is enough to complement the product with higher legs. The typical dimensions of such items are taken into account. The resulting item has a set of shelves that will expand the capabilities of existing storage systems.

2. add water and knead the solution, its consistency should resemble a very stiff dough;
3. Roll the solution into balls the size of a large orange in your palms;
4. apply clay to the frame, forming the outline of the bench;
5. At night, cover the finished bench with polyethylene so that the solution dries gradually and does not crack during the drying process.

A clay bench can be installed anywhere on the site: in the garden, in the yard or directly next to the house. If you install it in a gazebo, then to create a unified style, you can decorate one of the walls with clay and build a clay stove.

7. Secure the seat and backrest with metal corners.
8. Place the bench structure on its side.
9. Screw the bottom boards of the seat to the backrest beam.
10. Stuff the strip along the top edge of the back.
11. From the bottom boards remaining after cutting the fasteners, we got 3 legs. Make another one from another pallet and nail them to the bench.

After this, the entire surface is cleaned of chips and burrs and painted.

Stylish nightstand

Pallets are cut into equal parts. The components are combined to achieve a cube shape. The product will be an excellent bedside table.

If you cut off the walls on 1 or 2 sides, you will get an original table. Inside the hollow space you can additionally arrange shelves.

Furniture for the dacha can be made entirely from pallets. Even a classic dressing room will be no exception. Whole or cut-to-size frames are simply mounted on the wall.

The structure can be closed with a curtain or doors. You can even install a roller mechanism, like a wardrobe.

Before you make a table from pallets with your own hands, you need to prepare the material. Preparation is carried out in several stages:

1. Thorough cleaning of dust and dirt using soap solutions, and then drying.
2. Grinding, which is performed with a special tool. The grinding process removes irregularities and burrs. It is not necessary to sand all surfaces; it is enough to sand those that will come into contact with the body. You can use sandpaper or a sander.
3. Coating surfaces with a primer with a water-repellent effect to protect the wood from the negative effects of moisture if the furniture is intended for outdoor use.
