Choosing small chair beds for small rooms, tips

Small rooms sometimes leave little room for imagination when decorating the interior. The main task when arranging such apartments is to choose compact, comfortable furniture. If the bedroom is combined with a living room, small bed chairs for small rooms will be a good alternative to bulky sofas. Such furniture will easily fit into any interior style, the main thing is not to make a mistake with the size and quality of materials.

Advantages and disadvantages

Compact chair beds are designed for a small room, and like any other furniture, they have their pros and cons.

The advantages include compactness, mobility and cost. As a rule, these products are easy to move from place to place, save space and have affordable prices.

A downside is the small sleeping space that is obtained after unfolding it. You won’t be able to spread out your arms and legs on it, like on a full bed.

What types of chair-beds are there: an overview of transformation mechanisms

Modern furniture technologies are designed not only to produce transformable furniture, but also to make the transformation process itself as simple and convenient as possible.

There are several such mechanisms: from the widespread and already traditional Eurobook to modern remote control of the process using a remote control. In order to understand which mechanism to choose in your case, let’s consider the transformation models most often offered by furniture factories:

1. Folding transformation systems:

  • Eurobook. One of the popular mechanisms due to the fact that it does not require moving the base of the chair-bed along the floor, and accordingly, a chair with such a mechanism can be placed on a carpet or even at the junction of different floor coverings.
  • Click-clack. The mechanism by which the armrests of the chair are also involved in the formation of the sleeping space. For this reason, it will not be possible to install such a chair between other pieces of furniture.
  • Cot. The style of space design – loft – has become very popular. In such a room, chair-beds with a wooden or metal folding mechanism will fit very organically. They have a wide variety of appearances, but the meaning of the layout is approximately the same.

2. Roll-out systems. Their meaning lies in the fact that on the base of the chair-bed there are wheels that make it possible to unfold the berth by rolling the lower section forward.

  • Dolphin. When unfolding such a chair, part of the berth seems to “emerge” from the lower section to the height of the entire berth.
  • Accordion. The simplest roll-out way to transform a bed. In order to unfold the bed, just pull the handle or loop of the lower section forward. To do this, you need to make a minimum of effort, which means even a child can handle it.

3. Chairs-mattresses that do not have bases have also entered the world of furniture fashion. In order to get a full-fledged sleeping place, you just need to unfold the mattress folded several times.

4. Modern technologies allow you to unfold a chair-bed without any physical effort at all. These chairs have an electric drive, which is activated using a remote control. The transformation system of such a chair can be any, dictated by the innovations of the technological process, which allows it to be placed anywhere and on any floor covering in your home.

Types of transformation mechanisms for chair-beds

Manufacturers produce models with different mechanisms with which chairs can be transformed into a bed:

  1. Eurobook is the same type as in sofas, that is, wheels are attached to the seat, with the help of which it is rolled forward, and the removable part of the backrest is lowered into the resulting empty section;
  2. Dolphin is a type of mechanism in which there is a retractable unit under the seat, and the folding part rises “from the depths” to the main level;
  3. Folding accordion chair beds with storage. This mechanism consists of three parts, and they can be folded and unfolded like the musical instrument for which they are named, rolling forward in one motion;

  1. With withdrawable mechanism. Here, too, there is a block fixed under the seat that can be pulled forward, only this is done using a loop-strap.

There are manufacturers who produce chairs with a traditional book mechanism, there are also original versions - “saber”, where a handle-strap is used to pull the chair towards you, due to this the seat moves and the backrest lowers.

Design options for chair-bed frames

Guided by the general style of the space, it is possible to choose a chair-bed in such a design that it fits harmoniously into your home, and is also as comfortable as possible and meets your requirements.

  • A chair-bed can have armrests or be without them. Generally, a chair with armrests is more often used as a recliner. It is more cozy and comfortable to read a book, leaning on the high back and soft side elements of the seat. A chair without armrests has smaller dimensions, its design is simpler and therefore more durable, and when unfolded it is quite capable of replacing a full-fledged bed.
  • A chair-bed can have a rigid structure, frame and transformation mechanism, or even be a mattress folded in a certain way several times.
  • The frame of the chair can be free-standing, or it can only be part of a transformer model.

Types of upholstery for folding chairs

A chair-bed plays an important role in the interior of a small apartment. Therefore, when choosing, take into account not only the functions and type of furniture mechanism, but also decorative elements. The upholstery is responsible for aesthetics. The main criteria for choosing fabric are resistance to fading and abrasion. For upholstery, genuine leather and its substitute are used, as well as various types of textiles - velor, jacquard with a relief pattern, matting, chenille, flock, tapestry and others. Jacquard holds its shape better than other fabrics; tapestry is a beautiful and at the same time inexpensive material. The most practical material is velor. We also recommend models of chairs with removable covers; using them, the upholstery of your furniture will always remain like new.

In general, the choice largely depends on the design style of the apartment. For example, jacquard and tapestry look better in rooms furnished in a classic style, while flock and chenille look better in modern ones. Genuine leather is universal in this regard. But this is the most expensive type of upholstery, requiring labor-intensive care. There are no clear rules here, and the choice is determined only by the personal tastes of the owners.

External decorative design of chairs

The variety of fabrics used for upholstery of chair-beds is measured in hundreds of options:

  • Matting. It is distinguished by a rough and dense texture and a weaving method similar to the weaving of burlap. Consists of natural materials and does not cause allergies. However, it is not very resistant to stains, which means it is not suitable for families with animals and small children.
  • Flock. Literally translated, the word means pile. In this case, glued to a base - canvas. The material is very dense and therefore wear-resistant. Very pleasant and soft to the touch, voluminous in appearance. Not afraid of water and dirt.
  • Velours. Similar in properties and appearance to flock. Disadvantages include the accumulation of dust and pet hair. It is a more expensive material compared to analogues.
  • Chenille. Fabric made of dense warp threads, into which fluffy chenille thread is woven. Inexpensive, soft, pleasant to the touch, material, not limited in color and even possible with a pattern. However, it easily absorbs water and dirt. Due to the way it is made, it is prone to snags.
  • Genuine Leather. The most expensive material, but at the same time the most wear-resistant and representative. Durable, comfortable, easy to clean and always looks appropriate and respectable. What you should pay attention to when buying upholstered leather furniture, experts say.
  • Eco-leather. A material that is not inferior in properties to its natural counterpart. In addition, eco-leather is a porous material, and, therefore, a person on a chair made of this material will sweat less on a hot day. It absorbs color better, unlike natural leather, but completely repeats its pattern. However, this material is afraid of temperature changes and harsh cleaning agents.
  • Tapestry. One of the most affordable and most popular types of upholstery materials. Durable and available in a variety of colours, patterns and designs. However, the material is afraid of water and is subject to shrinkage.
  • And others...

Fabric colors can meet the most demanding needs. This includes a monochromatic rainbow of materials, geometric patterns, and floral patterns that are ideal for your interior.

Internal equipment of chair-beds

The first thing you need to pay attention to when choosing a chair-bed is its structural elements. They will bear the entire burden when using the furniture for its intended purpose.

  • The most reliable design is made of metal. It can withstand heavy weight and long-term impact without any damage.
  • Some of the main elements of chair-beds can be made of different types of wood. Pine and birch are a little softer and cheaper, oak will cost you more, but will also last much longer.
  • The budget material for making the frame is chipboard. However, this does not mean that such a product cannot last a long time. With the proper technological process, special impregnations and varnishes, lamination and veneering are applied to chipboard. All this allows you to extend the service life of the material.

Another point that you should pay attention to when choosing a chair-bed is the filling, that is, what you will have to sleep on.

  • The most inexpensive option is foam rubber. It is not very durable, but it is quite justified if the chair will be used from time to time.
  • The second of the budget fillers is padding polyester. Here, too, you should not count on its long service life.
  • Latex and coconut coir, the same materials that are used in the manufacture of high-quality bed mattresses, have orthopedic properties and durable fillers.
  • The filling may consist of a spring block, or it may be a springless sleeping place.

Important! Remember that the best chair-bed is the one that is selected before you start purchasing. And to do this, you need to decide on the frequency of using the chair as a bed, its location and dimensions. And only then analyze the internal equipment of this piece of furniture, which directly depends on the solution of the first three problems.

Installation of a kitchen chair-bed

Before you start assembling the chair structure, decide on the location of the chair and its role in the kitchen interior. If you choose an option with a bright color scheme, such a chair can become an excellent accent in a light, monochromatic interior.

The choice of filler also matters. Sintepon and foam rubber accumulate moisture well. So models with similar fillers are placed away from the tap and other sources of moisture in the kitchen. The best option would be to initially select a different filler. In any case, such furniture is vulnerable to damage, so if possible, place the chair separately from the kitchen unit.

After choosing the location, you should understand the type of structure of your chair and the features of its assembly, and also prepare the necessary tools: washers, screws (8 pcs.), springs (2 pcs.), plugs (2 pcs.), nuts, screwdriver, screwdriver.

Note : The indicated quantity is recommended. First of all, follow the instructions included with the product.

Step-by-step instructions on how to assemble a chair-bed:

  1. It is advisable to first keep the parts in a warm room for at least two hours.
  2. Make room and prepare the necessary items.
  3. Place the packaging materials on the floor and unpack the products.
  4. Install the brackets on the sides and secure with screws and washers.
  5. Fix the supports and attach the nuts. Do the same with checkboxes.
  6. After this, you can begin installing the drawer. For this you will need fastenings.
  7. Secure the spring and plug.
  8. Secure the sides to the mechanism with screws.
  9. Attach the backrest and make sure the structure is secure.

Obvious advantages and hidden disadvantages

The advantages of purchasing a chair bed are truly obvious.

  • No matter how large your living space is, purchasing a beautiful and comfortable piece of furniture, which, if necessary, will become a full-fledged sleeping place for one person, will never be superfluous.
  • In addition, chair-beds are most often equipped with a drawer for linen, which is also a definite plus.
  • Some models of chair-beds can be used in a semi-unfolded form as a couch - another very popular piece of furniture for home comfort.

If you choose the right chair-bed in accordance with the required dimensions and parameters and purchase it in good quality, then you simply will not find any disadvantages from such a purchase.

However, the disadvantages of such an acquisition are quite capable of ruining the entire impression of the purchase:

  • If the dimensions of the chair-bed are incorrectly selected, you will now and then be faced with the bulkiness of the design and get annoyed about it.
  • A low-quality mattress is not able to provide a good rest at night,
  • Inconvenient hard armrests or a low back will not give you comfortable moments of relaxation during the day.
  • Remember that any structure wears out over time, so buy a chair-bed with such a mechanism that it is easy to handle not only for you, but also for other family members, especially children and the elderly.
  • Inquire about the properties of the upholstery fabric on the product and how to clean it. A chair-bed with uncleaned stains or covered in pet fur is not pleasing to the eye. Experts share tips on cleaning different upholstery fabrics.

Healthy! Many pieces of furniture are now equipped with removable covers that can be washed directly in the washing machine, or taken to dry cleaning.

A correctly selected chair-bed, in full accordance with your needs, always looks appropriate, stylish, attractive and can delight you with its functionality for many years.

Filler

If you have to choose a chair bed for daily sleep, then you should pay special attention to the internal contents. The most commonly used types are:

  • foam rubber and synthetic winterizer are affordable, but their service life is very limited;
  • holofiber and durafil have proven themselves as durable materials with good performance properties;
  • latex is designed to last up to 20 years. It has high elasticity, but is quite expensive;
  • an independent spring block will ensure correct body position, evenly distribute the load, and last up to 10 years;
  • The Bonel system is affordable, but the orthopedic effect is practically absent.

For frequent use, it is better to purchase a chair bed filled with latex, holofiber, durafil or independent springs. These varieties can provide sound sleep and good rest.

Types of models

In furniture stores you can find many small chairs of any design and color. They have different prices, and therefore are designed for all segments of the population:

  • With orthopedic mattress. Their main difference is their versatility and multifunctionality. They have a durable design, and their coating is resistant to heavy loads. This product is lightweight and therefore easy to move. It is important that an orthopedic mattress ensures the correct position of the sleeping person’s body, and therefore eliminates the possibility of spinal curvature.
  • With a drawer for linen. This model is ergonomic, spacious and compact. As a rule, the volume of the box allows you to fit only bedding.
  • For children. Children's chair-beds are designed for small rooms in order to save space. This model allows you to fold the product during the day to free up space for games. The folding mechanism is so easy that even a small child can handle it.
  • A corner chair will help preserve useful space, increasing the ergonomics of the environment. Some models may have wheels or legs and be of any shape. The compact size and practical covering allows you to place the chair in any room.

A lot depends on the upholstery of the product. For example, leather is distinguished by quality and practicality. The standard size of a sleeping place in a chair-bed is 180x90 centimeters, so it can accommodate not only a child, but also an adult.

A comfortable chair for a small child should have an original design and shape, but so that they look harmonious in the interior. The base of the product must have an orthopedic mattress. There should also be no height differences or gaps.

Main features of chair-beds

Armchair beds have long been popular. And all thanks to several important advantages:

PhotoDescription

Plus 1. Compactness
Due to the small size of some single models, they can be installed even in a small room.
Plus 2. Functionality
Such furniture can simultaneously serve both for everyday relaxation and become a full-fledged sleeping place.

Plus 3. Ease of use
Folding chair-bed systems are organized as simply as possible, so you won’t have any problems transforming them.

Plus 4. Mobility
Due to the fact that many models are equipped with wheels, moving such furniture is very easy.

Plus 5. Practicality
Most chairs have a linen drawer, which will allow you to store bedding in it.

Wide range
Thanks to the abundance of materials, shapes and colors, it will not be difficult for you to choose an option that is ideal for your interior.

What can you say about the shortcomings?

If you purchase a model from a trusted manufacturer, then you will not encounter them. But when buying cheap chairs of low quality, be prepared for the fact that problems may arise with the transformation mechanism, and the sleeping place itself will be extremely uncomfortable.

Diversity by transformation

When choosing a folding chair, you should pay attention to the type of mechanism. Ease of use, as well as the choice of location for such a model, depends on this. The most popular folding mechanisms are:

  • accordion - the chair reclines due to the backrest, which occupies most of the sleeping space. The undoubted advantage of such a mechanism is a flat surface without height differences;
  • retractable mechanism - such models have a small height, and over time, gaps will be visible on the sleeping place. The advantages of the chairs include the strength of the mechanism, as well as the presence of drawers for linen;
  • Eurobook is a compact, lightweight option; to unfold the chair, you just need to pull the seat towards you and then lower the backrest. Even a child can easily handle such a mechanism;
  • click-clack - to unfold or fold such a chair-bed, you need to raise the seat until it clicks, and then lower it all the way to the floor;
  • dolphin - such models are equipped with an additional section hidden under the seat; it rises flush with the rest of the parts when the bed is rolled out.

In addition to different folding mechanisms, chair-beds differ in type of construction:

  • with drawers for things - the versatility of furniture for small apartments is a big plus; if there is no space for a linen chest of drawers, you can use models with a storage system. Most often, the volume of such boxes is small, but it is quite enough for bed linen;
  • with an orthopedic mattress - universal, multifunctional, durable. These chairs are relatively light, which allows them to be easily moved around the room. An orthopedic mattress is useful for the spine of a sleeping person, as it evenly distributes body weight, allowing the back to take the most correct shape;
  • children's models - furniture for children is smaller in size compared to standard options and takes up little space in the room. The mechanisms of such folding chairs are simple enough for the child to make his own bed and clean it up during the day;
  • corner option - any corner furniture takes up less space without losing capacity. This chair will fit into the bedroom and the kitchen if you need additional sleeping space.

We should also highlight models without armrests. They are lighter and more compact than classic chairs, and simple mechanisms make it easy to unfold the bed. The shape of the bed can be varied - from a cube to a wavy “snake”.

Kitchen chair-bed: pros and cons

A chair-bed or folding chair is a chair that can be quickly converted into a bed using a special design. This type of furniture is purchased, as a rule, for furnishing small apartments.

In most cases, such a chair is located in the bedroom. If you choose a spacious folding bed (160˟120˟220), then it can easily replace a standard bed. It is often chosen for children's bedrooms, since it is usually small in size (70˟95˟100).

In the living room, a folding chair often serves not only as an additional sleeping place, but is also suitable for short rest, reading books, and watching TV. For such purposes, you should choose a classic size chair (85˟110˟55).

It happens that there is free space for an additional bed only in the kitchen. Perhaps at first glance this seems like an impossible task, but just for such cases there is an excellent solution - a folding chair for the kitchen. Before making a choice, you should pay attention to all the disadvantages and advantages of such a solution.

pros:

  • used both as a resting place and as a sleeping place;
  • suitable for placement in small rooms;
  • if the chair has a drawer, this saves space for storing bedding;
  • has a convenient and quick design for transformation from a chair to a bed and vice versa;
  • A wide variety of colors, designs, and structures allow you to choose a model to suit any interior.

Features and Benefits

Furniture is classified as universal, since, thanks to the presence of a folding mechanism, it combines the functions of items for relaxation and sleep. Armchair beds are convenient not only for small rooms; they are often used to furnish guest sleeping areas. Their advantages are obvious:

  • saving usable space;
  • functionality;
  • mobility;
  • many design and style options.

Despite the many positive aspects, such furnishings also have disadvantages. First of all, this concerns the strength and reliability of transformation mechanisms. Most often, devices of poor quality are found in budget models. They can be difficult to unfold, distort individual parts, jam and break. The disadvantages also include the position of the berth being too low after unfolding. All this negatively affects health and does not contribute to proper rest.

Tips for choosing filler

Selecting the filling is a very responsible task, especially if the chair-bed will be used for everyday rest and sleep.

The filler, in the form of a spring block, is quite reliable, can easily withstand heavy loads, provides good air circulation and has the ability to follow the curves of the body, forming a comfortable orthopedic surface for comfortable sleep. It is also quite common to choose elastic and less susceptible to deformation springless blocks with fillers such as latex, polyurethane, padding polyester or padding polyester.

Types of folding chairs

One of the most popular types of chair-beds in our time are models with orthopedic mattresses , which are particularly versatile and have increased functionality.

As a rule, models of this type have a robust construction and a durable coating that is resistant to repeated use. At the same time, they are relatively light in weight, which allows even children to easily manage the transformation of the chair into a comfortable sleeping place.

The orthopedic base of this model ensures correct and comfortable body position during sleep, which contributes to excellent rest and healing of your body.

Another popular model, ideal for a small room, is a chair-bed with a spacious linen drawer . The efficiency and compactness of this model can hardly be overestimated. Due to some design features, a linen drawer is not present in every model. The volume of the laundry compartment also differs in different models. As a rule, models with a roll-out mechanism have the largest laundry compartment.

A corner chair-bed is one of the most effective ways to save usable space in a small room. Two backs of the chair, aligned at right angles, are formed using a mechanism in which only one side is folded out to organize a berth. The super compact dimensions of this model allow you to easily install it in almost any interior.

For those who like to sleep on a wide surface, a chair-bed model without armrests . Its main advantage is the absence of a movement restrictor - this is an ideal option for people who cannot tolerate stiffness and cramped conditions during sleep. This model also has an advantage when assembled, as it takes up less space and looks more neat and compact, even in a very small room.

for small children . Manufacturers often make such models in bright colors in the form of cars, animals or fairy-tale creatures. When choosing a children's model, special attention should be paid to the environmental friendliness of the material from which the furniture is made.

Advantages and disadvantages of folding chair beds in the interior of small apartments

This type of furniture is good because it is suitable for any room, regardless of what it is used for. A comfortable chair-bed for small-sized apartments is a good solution, because it will not be possible to allocate a guest room here. A chair-bed, which stands in the living room, will provide additional sleeping space if you need to accommodate guests for the night.

If you can’t arrange a full-fledged room for a child, a child chair-bed will come in handy. It is comfortable enough to provide rest, and when folded it does not take up much space.

There are 4 reasons to buy a chair-bed:

  • Functionality - this furniture transformer can be used as a traditional chair, main or additional bed;
  • Ergonomics. High-quality furniture is very comfortable and provides complete rest;
  • Easy to move: this chair is more mobile and lighter than a regular bed. Moreover, many models have special wheels for this purpose;
  • Attractive design - manufacturers produce many options, and you can find one that will match the overall style and palette.

There are no significant disadvantages to such chairs. But there are, for example, models with a roll-out mechanism that may seem too low. And there are models whose design does not include a linen drawer, and this is often inconvenient. That's why you need to pay attention to such nuances before purchasing.

Basic quality criteria

When buying a chair-bed, remember that healthy sleep is your main need, which this piece of furniture is designed to satisfy, so choose only high-quality items. Particular attention should be paid to the following quality criteria , which folding upholstered furniture intended for sleeping must meet:

  • Practical and convenient folding mechanism - the smoothest surface during transformation is provided by the accordion and click-clack mechanisms. Roll-out sofas and sofas with a Eurobook mechanism are significantly inferior in this parameter, since they consist of sections that create a division of the mattress.

  • The metal frame at the heart of the structure is much more durable and practical, in contrast to the aluminum base, which is completely unsuitable for everyday use. Options with wooden structures are also acceptable, the only thing is that you will have to take into account the level of humidity in the room, since if the temperature changes too frequently, the wooden frame can become deformed, which will lead to difficulties in its operation.

  • Bed width : the larger its size, the more comfortable and restful your sleep will be. The most comfortable chair-beds for this parameter are those without armrests, as well as models with accordion or click-clack mechanisms.

  • A very important indicator of the quality of upholstered furniture is the mattress filler; ideally, it should be uniform and of medium hardness, capable of maintaining the shape of the product while taking into account the weight of the sleeping person. The best option for a chair-bed are orthopedic mattresses with blocks of independent springs.

How to choose?

If you buy such multifunctional furniture, it means that you will actively use it. It makes sense to immediately buy the best. Look for products from trusted manufacturers. This will give you a guarantee of quality, just like the certificate that is issued when purchasing good furniture products.

When choosing such a sleeping place, there is a lot to consider. After all, it should be suitable for both daytime rest and sleep.

It is very important that the chair suits your body type . If you are a tall or large person, then there is no point in buying a very small chair. This product would be appropriate in a children's room.

It is very good if the chair suits you both in a sitting and lying position . When buying a chair, check immediately whether you are comfortable sitting in it. Test all the mechanisms to understand that everything works smoothly and you will not have problems folding and unfolding this furniture.

What's good and bad about the model

Compact multifunctional furniture is good for small apartments. Chair-beds fully meet the listed requirements, are easy to use and relatively cheap compared to other upholstered furniture. The advantages of folding models include:

  • variety of models, shapes and colors;
  • compatibility with other pieces of furniture;
  • low price;
  • compactness and functionality;
  • availability of a storage system;
  • light weight, due to which the chairs are quite mobile;
  • convenience during the day and comfort at night while sleeping;
  • easy care.

A small chair bed is suitable even for a small apartment. Due to its light weight, such furniture can be easily moved around the apartment or transported to another place when moving.

There are not many disadvantages to folding chairs. Firstly, this is a relatively small bed when unfolded; only one person can fully fit in such a bed. Secondly, not everyone is comfortable lying on a narrow bed, where they cannot spread their arms and legs while sleeping. It is worth considering the availability of free space in front of the chair itself - when unfolded, it takes up twice as much space.

Chair-bed design

There are a variety of design options.

Without armrests

This lightweight design has less weight, more compact dimensions and allows you to not limit or cramp a comfortable position while sleeping.

With a table

It is a very relevant interior solution for saving useful space, combining two functional furniture elements at once.

With sides

Armrests or sides can be soft or, for example, wooden. Open sides located at seat level provide convenient, comfortable and safe use.

With pouf

Gives the atmosphere more comfort, does not limit the room space and provides an increase in sleeping space.

Without backrests

It features a quick layout, large free space during sleep and a stylish appearance. Such models are lighter, making them easier to move to the right place.

In the photo there is a chair-bed without backs, decorated with black leather upholstery.

With carriage tie

Thanks to such a decorative screed, fabric or leather upholstery with traditional covered buttons, crystals, LEDs and other luxurious attributes gives the chair a truly mesmerizing look.

Furniture classification

When choosing a chair-bed, you need to focus on several indicators. These are features of mechanisms, design, materials. Thanks to this approach, you will be able to find the most convenient and compact option for a small room.

By transformation method

How comfortable the chair-bed will be depends largely on the features of the folding device. It is important to pay attention to whether you will have to apply a lot of force, how much space the furniture occupies when assembled and disassembled, whether it is mobile and many other nuances. The following mechanisms are popular today:

  • Cot. To get a place to sleep, you need to lift and pull the seat towards you, releasing the assembled parts of the furniture. In American models, the mattress is folded in half, in French models - in three. The thickness of the mattress depends on the number of folds.
  • Accordion. The berth is formed by the backrest, which is larger than the seat and consists of two parts, with their backs facing each other. The chair folds according to the accordion principle - two elements form an elevation and are fixed by the seat. The design is considered the most successful, since when unfolded it gives a flat surface without gaps.
  • Eurobook. The seat is pushed forward, and the backrest is placed in the vacant space. Such chair-beds are compact and do not form gaps when placed against a wall.
  • Click-clack. Like the Eurobook, it gives a smooth surface. To unfold the furniture, you need to raise the seat to a height at which a characteristic click is heard, and then lower the mattress. The chair is assembled in the same way, but in the opposite direction.
  • Eurosophist. To unfold the bed, you need to pull out the linen drawer and remove the back cushion. Then you need to turn the top of the mattress over and place it on the linen drawer.
  • Tango. The mechanism provides three backrest positions - for sitting, relaxing and sleeping. It can be vertical, slightly tilted or laid horizontally.
  • Dolphin. Part of the berth is hidden under the seat. To unfold the bed, you need to pull out the lower section, take out the mattress and fix it flush with the seat.

Chair-beds are often equipped with retractable mechanisms. The block moves forward from under the seat, the backrest is lowered into its place. The disadvantage is that over time, gaps appear between the parts of the folding parts.

By type of design

Chair-beds differ not only in their folding mechanisms. They can have different types of construction. The most popular options:

  • With compartments for linen. One or more drawers are built into a piece of furniture. Since the storage issue is especially acute in small rooms, such models serve as additional space for folding things.
  • With orthopedic base. Thanks to the design that relieves stress on the spine, chair-beds are suitable for daily use. The anatomical effect is ensured by a special frame and filler. Furniture should be selected taking into account individual characteristics.
  • For children. Compact models are convenient for sleeping at night and playing during the day. Bright fabrics are used for upholstery; images based on fairy tales and cartoons are applied to the surface. If there is a catastrophic lack of space in the nursery, you can install a mini-sized chair-bed.
  • Corner models. Thanks to the design, you can save as much usable space as possible. Furniture is produced with one or two backs, without armrests.

When choosing a corner option, you need to take into account the features of its future location and the direction of folding.

Chair-beds are made with or without armrests. Products without side walls are easier to unfold and have a wider bed. The downside is that they fail more often because the structure is less secure.

Manufacturing materials

The service life depends not only on the reliability of the transformation mechanism. The quality of frame materials, upholstery and filling is of great importance. It is important that they are environmentally friendly. For the manufacture of chair-bed frames the following are used:

  • Plywood, fiberboard, chipboard are the lightest materials. Used in budget furniture.
  • Solid wood. The base made of natural wood is stronger and more durable. The most inexpensive raw material is pine. Furniture items made from it are recommended for children's rooms. Not suitable for rooms with high humidity.
  • Metal. Chair-beds with a frame made of this material last longer than analogues made from other raw materials. Modern products use aluminum and various alloys to lighten the weight of the structure.

Materials

Furniture fabrics are special upholstery materials that are mounted on top of chairs.
The lifespan of a bed chair in a kitchen largely depends on its upholstery. It is important that it is resistant to wear and fading.

There are different types of upholstery: fabric, eco-leather, genuine leather. The following types of inexpensive fabrics can be used for upholstery:

  • chenille;
  • velours;
  • jacquard;
  • flock;
  • tapestry.

You should not give preference to a chair-bed with pile upholstery. It is quite difficult to remove stains on it, and the pile itself quickly collects dust.

Choice of material

After studying all types of mechanisms and models of chair-beds, you need to carefully study the materials used to make each part. Furniture must meet international standards and be safe for human health. That is why it should be equipped with an orthopedic mattress that will not damage the spine.

The product may be filled with a spring block, polyurethane foam or a mixed version.

Sectional models, as a rule, have spring blocks. They create additional resistance in loose parts of folding furniture. Thanks to the springs, folds do not form on the product and a solid sleeping place is obtained. They also provide optimal orthopedic results.

Polyurethane foam is used in regular and orthopedic chairs. It helps to increase the level of elasticity and firmness of the product. The top layer can be latex to make the product itself softer. It is for this reason that even a hard chair will have a pleasant and comfortable cover.

The mixed version includes coconut coir and polyurethane foam. Often this option is present in custom-made furniture and has a leather covering. Combined fillers are more durable and designed for frequent use, so they can replace a small bed.

A chair-bed for a small room should not only have a compact size, but also a stable design, as well as a sufficient size of the sleeping space.

If the product is intended for a children's room, then it should have the simplest folding mechanism and wear-resistant upholstery, as well as a bright and memorable design.

All the properties and characteristics of the chair-bed are in our next video.

Size selection

It is very problematic to place traditional upholstered furniture of regular sizes in a small area. A transformable bed for a small apartment will save space without compromising comfortable sleep. This is a great opportunity to free up the necessary centimeters.

Assortment of bed-chest models, their advantages and characteristics

When choosing a model, you need to focus on its width. The minimum size is 60 cm. Such models are more suitable for children, but can also be used as an additional guest seat. For adults, it is recommended to select chair-beds with a width of 70 cm.

The height of the backrest is also of great importance. For sitting rest, it should be at least 1.1 m. At a height of 0.8 m, you will have to place pillows under your head. The smallest option in height is 0.7 m.

If it is not possible to install a normal chair-bed, it can be replaced with mini-models. These “babies” have a back height of about 25 cm, a seat width of 60 cm, and a depth of 50 cm.

When choosing furniture, you must also take into account the body type of the person for whom it is intended. The size of the sleeping place should be 10–15 cm larger on each side. Otherwise, you will have to forget about a good sleep.

Accommodation Tips

Whatever the size of the room, you need to find the right place for the chair-bed. When unfolded, it should not block passages. It is not recommended to install the structure opposite doors, near heating appliances and air conditioners, or in a draft.

As for light sources, ideally it is better to place furniture to the side of the window. But if this is not possible, you will have to consider an artificial lighting scheme. Possible options for placing a chair-bed depend on the purpose of the room:

  • Children's room. A small piece of furniture will perfectly replace a bulky bed or sofa. At night it serves as a place to sleep; during the day it is collected, freeing up an area for games.
  • Living room. It is better to place compact chairs next to upholstered furniture, expanding the seating area.
  • Kitchen. The best solution is in a corner or niche, at the maximum distance from work areas, windows, and heating radiators.

A small chair-bed is suitable not only for small rooms. In spacious rooms it will complement the recreation area. Furniture of original design will also serve as an art object.
