• Click-clack. Like the Eurobook, it gives a smooth surface. To unfold the furniture, you need to raise the seat to a height at which a characteristic click is heard, and then lower the mattress. The chair is assembled in the same way, but in the opposite direction.
• Eurosophist. To unfold the bed, you need to pull out the linen drawer and remove the back cushion. Then you need to turn the top of the mattress over and place it on the linen drawer.
• Tango. The mechanism provides three backrest positions - for sitting, relaxing and sleeping. It can be vertical, slightly tilted or laid horizontally.
• Dolphin. Part of the berth is hidden under the seat. To unfold the bed, you need to pull out the lower section, take out the mattress and fix it flush with the seat.

Chair-beds are often equipped with retractable mechanisms. The block moves forward from under the seat, the backrest is lowered into its place. The disadvantage is that over time, gaps appear between the parts of the folding parts.

Chair-beds differ not only in their folding mechanisms. They can have different types of construction. The most popular options:

• With compartments for linen. One or more drawers are built into a piece of furniture. Since the storage issue is especially acute in small rooms, such models serve as additional space for folding things.
• With orthopedic base. Thanks to the design that relieves stress on the spine, chair-beds are suitable for daily use. The anatomical effect is ensured by a special frame and filler. Furniture should be selected taking into account individual characteristics.
• For children. Compact models are convenient for sleeping at night and playing during the day. Bright fabrics are used for upholstery; images based on fairy tales and cartoons are applied to the surface. If there is a catastrophic lack of space in the nursery, you can install a mini-sized chair-bed.
• Corner models. Thanks to the design, you can save as much usable space as possible. Furniture is produced with one or two backs, without armrests.

When choosing a corner option, you need to take into account the features of its future location and the direction of folding.

Chair-beds are made with or without armrests. Products without side walls are easier to unfold and have a wider bed. The downside is that they fail more often because the structure is less secure.

The service life depends not only on the reliability of the transformation mechanism. The quality of frame materials, upholstery and filling is of great importance. It is important that they are environmentally friendly. For the manufacture of chair-bed frames the following are used:

• Plywood, fiberboard, chipboard are the lightest materials. Used in budget furniture.
• Solid wood. The base made of natural wood is stronger and more durable. The most inexpensive raw material is pine. Furniture items made from it are recommended for children's rooms. Not suitable for rooms with high humidity.
• Metal. Chair-beds with a frame made of this material last longer than analogues made from other raw materials. Modern products use aluminum and various alloys to lighten the weight of the structure.

Furniture fabrics are special upholstery materials that are mounted on top of chairs.
The lifespan of a bed chair in a kitchen largely depends on its upholstery. It is important that it is resistant to wear and fading.

There are different types of upholstery: fabric, eco-leather, genuine leather. The following types of inexpensive fabrics can be used for upholstery:

• chenille;
• velours;
• jacquard;
• flock;
• tapestry.

You should not give preference to a chair-bed with pile upholstery. It is quite difficult to remove stains on it, and the pile itself quickly collects dust.

Choice of material

After studying all types of mechanisms and models of chair-beds, you need to carefully study the materials used to make each part. Furniture must meet international standards and be safe for human health. That is why it should be equipped with an orthopedic mattress that will not damage the spine.

The product may be filled with a spring block, polyurethane foam or a mixed version.

Sectional models, as a rule, have spring blocks. They create additional resistance in loose parts of folding furniture. Thanks to the springs, folds do not form on the product and a solid sleeping place is obtained. They also provide optimal orthopedic results.

Polyurethane foam is used in regular and orthopedic chairs. It helps to increase the level of elasticity and firmness of the product. The top layer can be latex to make the product itself softer. It is for this reason that even a hard chair will have a pleasant and comfortable cover.

The mixed version includes coconut coir and polyurethane foam. Often this option is present in custom-made furniture and has a leather covering. Combined fillers are more durable and designed for frequent use, so they can replace a small bed.

A chair-bed for a small room should not only have a compact size, but also a stable design, as well as a sufficient size of the sleeping space.

If the product is intended for a children's room, then it should have the simplest folding mechanism and wear-resistant upholstery, as well as a bright and memorable design.

Size selection

It is very problematic to place traditional upholstered furniture of regular sizes in a small area. A transformable bed for a small apartment will save space without compromising comfortable sleep. This is a great opportunity to free up the necessary centimeters.

Assortment of bed-chest models, their advantages and characteristics

When choosing a model, you need to focus on its width. The minimum size is 60 cm. Such models are more suitable for children, but can also be used as an additional guest seat. For adults, it is recommended to select chair-beds with a width of 70 cm.

The height of the backrest is also of great importance. For sitting rest, it should be at least 1.1 m. At a height of 0.8 m, you will have to place pillows under your head. The smallest option in height is 0.7 m.

If it is not possible to install a normal chair-bed, it can be replaced with mini-models. These “babies” have a back height of about 25 cm, a seat width of 60 cm, and a depth of 50 cm.

When choosing furniture, you must also take into account the body type of the person for whom it is intended. The size of the sleeping place should be 10–15 cm larger on each side. Otherwise, you will have to forget about a good sleep.

Accommodation Tips

Whatever the size of the room, you need to find the right place for the chair-bed. When unfolded, it should not block passages. It is not recommended to install the structure opposite doors, near heating appliances and air conditioners, or in a draft.

As for light sources, ideally it is better to place furniture to the side of the window. But if this is not possible, you will have to consider an artificial lighting scheme. Possible options for placing a chair-bed depend on the purpose of the room:

• Children's room. A small piece of furniture will perfectly replace a bulky bed or sofa. At night it serves as a place to sleep; during the day it is collected, freeing up an area for games.
• Living room. It is better to place compact chairs next to upholstered furniture, expanding the seating area.
• Kitchen. The best solution is in a corner or niche, at the maximum distance from work areas, windows, and heating radiators.

A small chair-bed is suitable not only for small rooms. In spacious rooms it will complement the recreation area. Furniture of original design will also serve as an art object.
