Co-sleeping: 5 purchases to prevent your baby from falling on the floor

To everyone who constantly or occasionally falls asleep cuddled with a child, words of support from children's sleep consultant Lera Semenova (@sleepmalysh):

“Co-sleeping is a great option. If it does not interfere with the rest of mother and child and is organized safely, then you will experience many benefits:

  • promotes lactation,
  • helps mother recover after childbirth,
  • regulates the baby's body temperature,
  • Makes night feedings easier.”

Co-sleeping is beneficial not only for babies, but also for highly sensitive children who need constant contact with their mother.

Add-on cot

Nowadays it’s not a problem to find a cradle or crib that can be attached to the parent’s bed with straps or special brackets.

Pros: ideal for babies, because mom is available all night, while the baby has his own safe space, linen and blanket - it’s also hygienic!

Disadvantages: the cost of such cribs is higher than usual; by 1-1.5 years the child will outgrow them.

Simple single bed: precautions

Let's start with something simple. Parents usually face the problem of falling when the baby outgrows his newborn crib and is bought a single children's bed. Usually, mothers and fathers are very nervous, thinking that it will be difficult for the child to adapt to an unusual sleeping place. However, most often children fall asleep without difficulty in a new bed. But the problem is that if she doesn’t have a safety rail, then on the very first night the family’s peaceful sleep is disturbed by the loud cries of the pet that has rolled onto the floor.

Not only can such a fall cause a serious injury to the baby, but he also receives psychological trauma (especially if he cannot calm down for a long time). To prevent this, you should choose a crib for a small child that has a side.

Alas, not all models have safety sides, because many beds are designed for fairly old children (who can control themselves while sleeping). In this case, some mothers, and even fathers, sometimes resort to “folk” remedies. Namely: chairs with backs are placed in front of the crib, blankets and blankets, pillows and soft toys are laid out on the floor in a thick layer. Sometimes even books are used! Agree, not the best solution.

Fortunately, there are special protective rollers on sale that are intended for children from 1.5 to 5 years old. They are a special type of sheet, which is fenced on both sides with inflatable rollers. This device is placed in the bed and forms a protected sleeping place. Its disadvantage is that it is quite narrow. But you can take such rollers with you on a trip.

There are also bed guards (or, as they are also called, safety barriers and partitions). They can also be used for older children. These are rectangular sheets, which are usually made of plastic or an aluminum frame in a fabric cover. Usually they are rigidly fixed so that the child cannot bend the side.

Universal fastenings allow you to install the protection on any crib. The dimensions of the barriers vary: from 1 to 1.5 m in length, and up to half a meter in height - this is quite enough to protect the baby from falling. Installation is possible anywhere, at the discretion of the parents.

The only contraindication: the described sides cannot be used in bunk and loft beds!

Protective bumper

An ideal option that solves the problem not only for infants, but also for children over 2 years old. The bumper cannot be pushed onto the floor; the sides are securely attached to the bed or sofa, turning them into a full-fledged playpen.

Pros: the side is fixed easily, but at the same time securely. It's also easy to remove if needed. It can even withstand a teenager rolling over to the edge of the bed, so they can be used not only for co-sleeping, but also for teenagers sleeping restlessly in their beds.

Cons: the price of this accessory may seem too high to some, although even in this selection there are less convenient, but comparable in price options.

Horseshoe pillow

Typically, a pillow in the shape of the letter U or L is used by pregnant women, but after the birth of a child it will also come in handy - it will help organize joint sleep. This is one of the simplest and cheapest accessories to protect your baby from falling out of bed.

Pros: very cheap and practical. The pillow can be used to make a chair, a laptop stand, or a baby positioner. Removing the pillowcase and washing it is as easy as shelling pears.

Cons: The pillow may accidentally cover the baby's face.
It is not fixed on the bed and is not a reliable fence - already a six-month-old baby is able to climb over it or push it onto the floor (and fall after it).

Cocoon for a child

The child can lie on the parent’s bed, but at the same time - in his own fenced area. Cocoons are also convenient for traveling and visiting.

Pros: the baby sleeps in its nest and does not risk being hurt by a turned parent or an “adult” blanket, the mother is as close as possible, the feeling of warm closeness is familiar to the baby from the prenatal period - he sleeps more peacefully.

Cons: this solution is only for a few months, because by 5 months the baby will have grown out of the cocoon.
