A sofa is not just a piece of furniture on which you can relax comfortably while watching TV. It is often used as a folding place for a good night's sleep. This can be either the only place to relax in the apartment, or a spare “airfield” for guests. There are many options for sofa transformation mechanisms that allow you to replace a double bed. One of the most popular models is the Eurobook, which has a number of advantages and disadvantages.
What is the Eurobook mechanism in sofas?
Eurobook is a common and comfortable option for a sofa.
Products with a Eurobook mechanism are a slightly modified sofa. In this case, the lower part of the body, namely the seat, is roll-out. The back of the product is located in this place, resulting in a comfortable and large sleeping area.
The main mechanism in such furniture is quite simple. These are two wooden or metal guides along which the lower part moves. The design is quite durable and will last a long time if used correctly. When unfolded, the backrest rotates, after which it is placed on the frame. Some models have removable pillows instead of a backrest.
On high-quality sofas, when unfolded, no gaps or holes are visible. If there are shortcomings, then most likely they saved on material and work.
The sofa unfolds very easily.
Pros and cons of the Eurobook mechanism
This design has a number of advantages :
- simplicity and ease of use, accessible even to children;
- reliability and long service life due to the absence of complex elements, which makes it suitable for daily use;
- ability to withstand heavy loads;
- reasonable price compared to other mechanisms due to the simplicity of the design.
The disadvantages include the possibility of scratches on the flooring . The option with rollers is more successful, since they do not damage the floor, however, they gradually leave a mark on the carpeting, crushing the pile. Some models require space between the sofa and the wall so that the backrest can fit when it is unfolded.
Advantages
Sofas with a Eurobook mechanism are very popular. There are several advantages of such furniture:
- Ease of use. The sofas are easy to disassemble and reassemble to their original condition. As a rule, the weight of the structure is small, so both an elderly person and a child can handle it.
- Presence of a linen drawer. Most models have special linen drawers where it is convenient to store bedding and pillows.
- Reliability and durability of use. The design is very simple, there is practically nothing to break. In general, the service life depends on the quality of the upholstery, filler and components. If necessary, you can actually handle the breakdown yourself.
- Reasonable price. Making a Eurobook sofa is not difficult and not particularly expensive. The price depends on the materials used, but such furniture will still be cheaper than one made from the same components, but with a different mechanism.
When unfolded, you get a full-fledged sleeping place.
Sofa "Dolphin"
The list of popular sofa transformation mechanisms includes the “Dolphin” modification. It is included in it because of its convenience, ease of opening and small size. The sofa itself is divided into two parts. One of them occupies a large area and is static. But the second one is retractable. It is located under the seat of the sofa. Because of this, its dimensions are not very large. Typically, Dolphin designs are installed in corner sofas.
Dolphin sofa
How the Dolphin sofa opens up
The folding mechanism of the “Dolphin” sofa is lever type. Therefore, it is revealed extremely simply. It is enough to pull the retractable part towards you until the limiters operate. When opened, the mattress block will be visible inside. It needs to be pulled out from there, placing it on top of the sliding part. Usually, special hinges are provided in the sofa for this purpose.
Transformation mechanism for the “dolphin” sofa
When opened, the product increases slightly. This is due to the overall compactness of the transformation mechanism.
Peculiarities
The popularity of the folding mechanism in Dolphin-type sofas is primarily due to convenience. To open it, just pull the bottom part. The process itself takes minimal time and requires almost no effort. Also, such sofas have a large drawer for storing bed linen.
Linen box in the dolphin sofa
The disadvantages include not the lowest price of the product. Basically, Dolphin sofas are corner sofas, so they are quite expensive. Also, the movable structure, when opened, is under constant load. In this regard, internal fittings require additional care and regular lubrication. Otherwise it won't last long enough.
Corner sofa “dolphin”
The fact that when opened, the “Dolphin” sofa does not take up very much space can hardly be attributed to advantages or disadvantages. Because of this, the product cannot always become a full-fledged sleeping place for a person. However, such a sofa can be placed in a place with insufficient free space. And this is a very ergonomic solution.
Flaws
The Eurobook has few disadvantages, but they do exist. The main ones include the following:
- Presence of a joint. Compared to the traditional option, it is not so noticeable because the elements are connected quite tightly. However, in some cases the joint causes some inconvenience.
- Distance to wall. Manufacturers recommend placing the product not close to the wall, otherwise it will be impossible to unfold it. The exception is models in which pillows are offered instead of a backrest.
- Damage to floors. Due to the fact that the retractable part will constantly change position, the risk of damage to the floor covering increases. Experts recommend choosing legs for carpet, and wheels for laminate or parquet.
It is important to choose the right sofa legs so as not to spoil the floor.
Folding sofas
Modern folding mechanisms include a third type - folding. It is familiar to everyone who has had an ordinary inexpensive sofa. The main advantage is the presence of a large linen drawer.
Tango
This sofa is very functional, because when unfolded it can take several positions. It resembles a book. You need to pull the lower part, after which the backrest will lower.
Pros:
- Intermediate folding options;
- Smooth sleeping surface.
The only downside is the inability to place the sofa close to the wall. There is also a recliner option with a retractable footrest.
Butterfly
The “butterfly” combines retractable and folding mechanisms. Allows you to quickly fold and assemble the sofa. First the lower part is pulled out, then the upper part is folded back.
Pros:
- Speed of the mechanism;
- Bed size.
The disadvantages of a sofa of this shape include the risk of damaging the rollers used when rolling out. In terms of the unfolding method, the mechanism is very similar to the Eurobook.
Book
The classic mechanism for most people is a book. It is very easy to unfold and fold the sofa book. You need to tilt the backrest, after which it will lower, increasing the sleeping area. This sofa consists of a metal or wooden frame.
The parameters allow you to fit a section for a large linen drawer inside. Also, the advantages include strength, simplicity and low cost.
Domino
The mechanism, called “domino,” combines rollout, eurobook and dolphin dive. The lower part is extended, the back is folded and, in the form of a dive, falls down, forming a place to sleep. The characteristics of the sofa do not allow the inclusion of a compartment for things in the design, which makes the mechanism less attractive.
The main advantage of this triple design is the height of the berth.
Design Features
The main design feature of a sofa with a Eurobook mechanism is the compactness of the model. Such furniture is small in size, so it is often chosen for small apartments. In addition, the sofa is very easy to disassemble and then assemble. As a rule, the products are not heavy, and the junction of the two halves is practically not felt.
Sofas with a Eurobook mechanism are affordable, and there are quite a lot of design options - from laconic to creative.
Types and classifications of sofas
Under one general name “sofa” are hidden a variety of types of this furniture. And corner ones, and books, and even round ones. To understand which sofa is suitable for an apartment, it is worth understanding the classification of this type of furniture. First of all, let's look at sofas by the type of how they fold out (or transform), that is, by the type of folding structure.
Sofas come in different types of transformation

Sofa book
Also, sofas can be divided into several types according to the type of design.

- Chair-bed. Compact and take up very little space when folded. Designed for one person's sleep.

Sofa “Book-Finka”
Types of sofas with Eurobook mechanism
Manufacturers offer many models of Eurobooks, so if you want, you can find the one that best suits your interior.
Straight, angular, U-shaped
The shapes of sofas are:
- Direct. The simplest model, which often uses pillows instead of a backrest. It is compact in size and perfect for small spaces.
- Angular. They often become an element of the living room interior. However, they are also good for a bedroom, because the sleeping space is large. Only the central part extends.
- U-shaped. Such products fit well into a spacious living room. When unfolded, you get a large sleeping area.
Corner sofas are large in size.
Doubles, triples
Depending on the number of seats, sofas can be double or triple. Obviously, the second option is longer than the first. Corner and U-shaped models accommodate more people, but also take up more space.
U-shaped models accommodate many people.
With one armrest, with two armrests, without armrests
The presence of armrests in purchased furniture depends on the personal preferences of the buyer. Manufacturers offer several options:
- No armrests at all. Such furniture allows you to visually save space in the room. It is great for youth interiors. The absence of pillows or their presence as a replacement for armrests is allowed. The models are well suited for tall people.
- A sofa with one element is an atypical furniture form, most suitable for small apartments. This model can be chosen for people of any height.
- Furniture with two armrests is a more familiar option and is suitable for any room. In this case, the elements can be either fabric or wood. It is important to take into account the height of the person who will sleep on it - the armrests limit the size of the bed.
Furniture with one armrest is suitable for people of any height.
Two-section, three-section
Manufacturers offer sofa models that differ in the number of sections:
- Two-section. This type of Eurobook is considered standard. The models are easy and simple to disassemble and are suitable for sleeping both at night and during the day.
- Three-section. Rarer models, due to the additional section, a larger berth is obtained.
Spring, springless
There are two types of sofa mattress - with and without springs.
Springless options are also divided into two types:
- With dependent block. In this case, the springs are connected to each other. Such products are notable for their low price, but they will not last long. After some time, the springs will begin to “fall through” and sleeping in such a place will become uncomfortable.
- In furniture with an independent unit, the springs are located in separate cases, so they last longer. At the same time, the sofa does not sag too quickly; the service life of the product reaches up to 15 years. The disadvantage is the high cost.
It is better to choose products with an independent spring block.
Springless models are distinguished by the presence of a soft filler located under the upholstery. For the internal part choose:
- Foam rubber. The material is short-lived, quickly presses through and becomes unusable.
- Polyurethane foam. It is characterized by high density and durability, retains its shape well, but is better suited for sitting rather than sleeping.
- Latex. High-quality material, convenient and comfortable for relaxation. However, products with such a filler are expensive.
Eurobook sofa with orthopedic mattress
This furniture variation uses an orthopedic mattress, which is well suited for relaxation at any time of the day. It is distinguished by high quality and long service life. A Eurobook sofa with an orthopedic mattress is an excellent option for relaxation, but the cost of the model will be higher than that of conventional models.
With linen box
Having a drawer for linen is a great addition. Under the seat or part of it there is a special place where you can leave bed linen, pillows, towels and any other textiles. If desired, you can even place boxes with shoes for which the right season has not yet arrived.
A linen drawer is very convenient in some cases.
For adults, children
You can find many different models of book sofas on sale. For adults, these are stylish, large or compact options, suitable for different layouts and room designs. For children - small and compact products with bright and colorful upholstery and decorative pillows. Children's sofas are equipped with a safe design so as not to harm the child.
Sofa finishing
The assembly is complete, which means that you can move on to finishing the furniture. Foam rubber is used in sofas. Here it is also necessary to carry out all measurements especially accurately and clearly. The cut parts are attached to the frame using glue.
To complete the fabric finishing, you need to take measurements from the sofa and cut out samples. When this work is done, you can proceed to the manufacture of fabric upholstery parts. And the final touch is making the cover. The parts cut out of the material should be sewn on a machine and stretched onto the sofa.
The fabric for upholstery should be dense and of high quality. How long a handmade sofa will last depends on this.
Frame material and upholstery
Depending on the models, manufacturers use different materials for the frame and padding.
Frame
The main design of the Eurobook is made of several materials:
- Metal. The highest quality and durable products are made from it. But their price is higher than usual.
- Tree. It is an environmentally friendly raw material and is often used to create children's furniture variations.
- Chipboard or MDF. These options make simple and economical models, but their service life is not very long.
Upholstery
The upholstery of the sofa must be durable so that the furniture can be used not only for spending time sitting, but also for sleeping. Manufacturers give preference to fabrics such as jacquard, velor, tapestry. There are products made of leather, both natural and artificial, on sale. Flock is often used - a particularly durable material.
The cost of a sofa depends on the materials of construction and upholstery - the more expensive they are, the more you will have to pay.
The sofa can have any upholstery and filling.
How much does a Eurobook sofa cost?
The price for such products can vary from 9,000 to 65,000 rubles or more. It depends on the filling material, frame and upholstery, as well as on the model, the presence of an orthopedic mattress and other additional components.
The Eurobook sofa model can be considered universal, high quality, and easy to use. It optimally combines price, comfort and reliability. The product will fit perfectly into any interior and room, and with a competent approach to the choice of design, it will last for many years.
Folding rules
It is not difficult to disassemble and assemble a sofa with a Eurobook mechanism. The furniture is laid out according to the following scheme:
- Carefully pull the seat forward; for convenience, some models have special handles. In some options you will need to lift this part up a little, in others you will need to move it strictly horizontally. As a result, a niche is formed, in which there is often a linen drawer.
- Afterwards, the backrest must be lowered and carefully placed on top of the niche. The top is the back of the block, the halves are located on the same level.
When unfolded, the sofa looks attractive if all its parts are made of the same material. In budget models, the lower or hidden parts are most often made of lower quality thin material, which differs from the upper upholstery even in color.
Types of mechanisms
Manufacturers develop and create a large number of metal elements of upholstered furniture that will satisfy the buyer with any living space and physical capabilities for unfolding.
Folding mechanisms for sofas are different.
Transformation of a sofa using the “book” method
The simplest option, which involves two positions: a place to sit and sleep. When disassembled, it forms a comfortable double bed and has an internal drawer for bedding.
“Book” is the easiest way to transform. It is easily transformed and does not take up much space in the room, but requires 10-15 cm of free space against the wall. It unfolds by tilting the backrest and partially moving the seat forward.
Such furniture does not take up much space. Suitable for use in small rooms, kitchens and children's rooms; it is convenient to receive guests and sleep on it.
This sofa model is well suited for any room - kitchen, living room, children's room.
Transformation of a sofa using the Eurobook method
Quickly transforms by extending the seat on casters and lowering the back cushions into the resulting niche. Equipped with internal storage drawers and creates a large sleeping area.
This sofa can be transformed very simply and does not require any effort. The roller element is simple and reliable, but requires a flat floor surface for easy movement when unfolding. And the wide seat of the “Eurobook” does not allow you to comfortably lean back to relax, but it will comfortably accommodate one person to sleep.
These sofas are comfortable and comfortable for sleeping.
Transformation of a sofa using the “click-click” method
The principle of unfolding a “book”, but improved. The mechanism allows you not only to fold it into a sleeping position, but also to partially recline the backrest, creating a comfortable seat for relaxation.
“Click-klyak” is a more advanced version of the “book” transformation. The metal frame makes the system reliable, and soft armrests can replace pillows, but installation requires 10-15 cm of free space against the wall.
The frame makes such sofas reliable and comfortable. Made straight or angular, the folding design is reliable and convenient for daily use.
This design is suitable for daily use.
Transformation of a sofa using the “dolphin” method
It has an angular shape, consisting of two sections: the main one for seating and an internal pull-out one for creating a sleeping place.
These sofas consist of two main sections. To transform, simply pull out the front part, which is equipped with guide rollers and a hinge for convenience. In the inner section there is an additional pillow, which, when rising, extends to the same level as the entire surface.
These sofas can be folded out by pulling out the front part. The “dolphin” sofa occupies a significant area in the room, is suitable for large living rooms, and can be used as the main sleeping place.
It should be taken into account that when unfolded, “dolphin” sofas take up a lot of space. To the question which sofa mechanisms are the most reliable, there is an answer: it depends on the frequency of use when disassembled. Manufacturers of all designs provide for daily use of all furniture elements, which should last at least 7-10 years.
The reliability of the mechanism will depend on the frequency of its use.
How to check functionality
Before buying a sofa with a Eurobook mechanism, it is recommended to consult with the salesperson in the store and ask him to show how the model is disassembled. After this, you should assemble and unfold the model yourself. At the same time, carefully observe how the process is carried out - everything should happen easily, fittings and elements of the device should not creak, cling or click. If there are inconveniences and unpleasant sounds, it is better to refuse the purchase.
Important! The presence of gaps in the unfolded state indicates poor quality assembly and cheap materials.
You need to check the sofa before purchasing.
Drawout models
The principle of the sofa roll-out mechanism is based on rollers and brackets. Lightly pull the front hinge and it will simultaneously pull the rest along with it, lowering the backrest and turning the sofa into a bed.
Let's consider the types of withdrawable models in detail.
"Eurobook"
When folding out the Eurobook, pull out the front part equipped with rollers. Lower the backrest into the freed space. When folded, the “Eurobook” creates a wide seat.
"Dolphin"
The “dolphin” mechanism is more often found in the designs of corner models. A hidden platform is located under the seat. When transforming, pull the front part towards you, the platform will rise, move to the side, and form a comfortable sleeping bed. The sofa has an ergonomic design. There is a spacious drawer for storing bed linen.
"Puma"
It has a modern high-tech transformation mechanism with a spring system. To convert it into a bed, the seat is raised, moving forward, after which the part under it is lifted up. When unfolded, the seat supports do not touch the floor. When extended, it takes up little space, so there are no problems with its installation.
"Pantograph"
Upholstered furniture with a pantograph mechanism has a modern design. It folds out easily to form a full-size bed. The principle of operation is similar to the previous one, but the sofa mechanism does not have rollers. Before unfolding, the seat is slightly raised and then pushed forward. The rear mattress is lowered into the freed space manually. Although the pantograph sofa mechanisms are less convenient, they are safe for the floor covering.
"Conrad"
The Conrad model consists of three sections. When folded, they are located under the seat. When transforming, pull on the hidden strap of the seat, the front part slides easily, carrying the other two along with it. The extended bed turns out to be low.
Dimensions
When choosing a sofa, it is important to correctly determine the size. Several parameters need to be taken into account:
- The width and length of the sofa, as well as the height at the highest point.
- Bed dimensions.
- Height from floor to seat.
- Dimensions of armrests, if any.
- Seat depth.
The most common models on sale are those with dimensions of 140*190 cm, 140*200 cm. For those who need a wider option, sofas of 160*200 cm are produced.
If you wish, you can order a sofa according to individual parameters, but it will cost much more.
Furniture sizes are selected taking into account several indicators.
Criterias of choice
Before choosing a sofa with an accordion mechanism, you should decide on the desired parameters
Furniture stores have a huge selection of such designs, so it is important not to get confused and find a model that will combine all the necessary characteristics
When choosing a suitable sofa, experts recommend paying attention to the following:
- quality of furniture;
- type of construction;
- color and style;
- upholstery material;
- dimensions when unfolded;
- availability of additional functions.
First of all, it is necessary to inspect the wooden parts for unevenness, excessive moisture or an abundance of burrs. Metal elements must not have scratches or traces of rust. Also, high-quality upholstered furniture cannot creak or warp.
By design, sofas are divided into the following types:
- Standard – for seating two or three people. Such models are most often installed in the living rooms of small apartments.
- Corner - having a stationary side section. It allows you to accommodate the largest number of people.
The style of the sofa should be combined with the interior of the room in which the furniture is intended to be installed
It is important to pay attention not only to the color, but also to the upholstery material. Its wear resistance determines how many years later the sofa will have to be re-upholstered. The coating must be cleaned well, this is especially important if there are children or animals in the house.
For daily use, upholstery made of jacquard, chenille or tapestry is suitable. An excellent solution is Teflon impregnation, which gives the fabric water-repellent and dirt-resistant properties.

Velor and flock upholstery looks beautiful, but wears out quickly with regular use. As for leather, of course, natural material has the maximum wear resistance, but it is not suitable for daily sleep. Leatherette is worse in strength - with frequent use it quickly wears out and cracks.
Sofa models have different sizes, so you should measure in advance the place where you plan to fit the structure. Future furniture should unfold freely without touching anything. The size ranges of the structure are: width – 70-100 cm, length – 165-200 cm.
If desired, you can purchase furniture with additional equipment: armrests, linen drawer. Some sofas have built-in niches in the side elements, which are used to store books or decorative items. Such designs allow you to save on bookshelves. With daily use of upholstered furniture for sleeping, a built-in box on wheels will become relevant.
The accordion type transformation is one of the most popular among consumers. The sofa is suitable for a variety of rooms: living room, bedroom, office or children's room. You just need to choose the right model that fits perfectly into the room in size and style.
High-quality furniture does not creak
You should choose the most wear-resistant upholstery material

Customer Reviews
Most buyers leave positive reviews about this type of furniture. They note the comfort and ease of use, quality and durability of materials.
Negative reviews are written, as a rule, by those who purchased poorly made models that quickly break down. People are unhappy not with the mechanism itself, but with the assembly. Therefore, when purchasing, it is recommended to pay attention to all parameters, including materials for the manufacture of the structure and covering.
A leather sofa is much more expensive than a fabric one.
How to unfold a Eurobook
To unfold the product you need:
- Pull the seat, which has rolling casters, all the way forward.
- After this, lower the backrest into the free space in a horizontal position.
Photo: How a Eurobook sofa folds out.
This double sofa folds out just as easily, but in the reverse order: raise the backrest and push in the seat. Ready!
For convenient use, fabric loops or handles are usually attached. In corner-type models, only the long part of the seat needs to be folded out. The short (corner) remains unchanged.

Three-section Eurobooks (triple layout) unfold and fold in a similar way, while the additional section, which is hidden under the seat, unfolds automatically. Or in three folds: we perform two steps according to the instructions and additionally lower the third section (in this case it is the upper part of the seat) manually.
How to lay out the structure correctly
To get a full-fledged sleeping place, you need to perform two simple operations:
- Gently pull the seat towards you, pushing it out all the way. As a result, a niche is formed behind it, under which there is a box for bedding. In this position it is open, you can add or remove things. For convenience, there may be fabric loops or small handles on the bottom.
- We lower the backrest and lay it on top of the linen drawer. It turns out that the back of the block is on top. Its contents and appearance are no different from the seat, so even when unfolded, the model is comfortable and attractive.
To visualize the transformation, we suggest watching a video about the Eurobook mechanism in the sofa.
Types of furniture
Traditional varieties are straight and corner sofas. Both of them have quite compact sizes compared to other models. The corner sofa with the Eurobook mechanism has only the long part that can be folded out. The short one remains motionless, but increases the parameters of the sleeping surface in length.
There are products with two and one armrest or without this element at all. The first is a traditional version of a classic sofa, however, in this case, the length when unfolded may not be enough for a comfortable sleep, especially for a tall person. In this case, it is preferable to model without armrests or with one that imitates the head of the bed. There are also options with removable soft armrests, which are attached with Velcro - it will be comfortable to sit and sleep.

Sofas with this mechanism use various filling materials:
- Foam rubber. A budget option. A continuous sheet of material lies on the cross slats. It is quickly pressed through, destroyed, and becomes unusable. Low performance properties make this type of “filling” the least preferable.
- Polyurethane foam. Dense, tough, holds its shape well. Resistant to wear. However, not everyone is comfortable sleeping on it because the surface is not very soft. Therefore, it is more suitable for furniture used in offices.
- Latex. Creates a comfortable place to sleep. Soft but resilient, supports the body almost like a good orthopedic mattress. The material is non-toxic and lasts a long time.
- Dependent springs. A comfortable solution for both sleeping and sitting. But the mechanism quickly becomes unusable and is pressed through. Recesses form in the sofa, making it difficult to sleep comfortably.
- Independent springs. The best choice for all occasions. Thanks to the springs isolated from each other, the sleeping surface adapts to the contours of the body and supports it. If they start to fail, it happens one at a time, so the parts are easy to replace.
Sofas with the Eurobook mechanism differ in appearance. The color, cover material, and design can be almost anything.
