Supports are one of the main elements of a table.
Greetings, my dear readers.
There are no tables without supports. Most often these are the legs. There are many types of them, differing in design, material of manufacture, shape and cost. Therefore, choosing them can be difficult. Let's figure out what support legs for a table can be.
What are furniture supports, legs and bases for?
The key functions of these structures are:
Support. Thanks to the legs, the stability of the furniture increases, as well as the safety of its operation. At the same time, it becomes possible to change the height and slope of the interior item at your discretion. They also allow you to place furniture firmly and evenly on an uneven floor surface, for example, to level a kitchen set.
Protective function. Supports for tables, as well as various types of underframes, allow you to protect the lower part of the furniture from accidental mechanical damage, exposure to moisture and dust.
Comfort. This includes the ability to adjust the level of an item to suit you, choosing the most convenient one for your work. This function is especially important in the case of assembling a desk or dining table, the optimal height of which ensures comfortable use of the item and a good mood for its owner.
Aesthetic. No less important function than the previous ones. Decorative items can not only become part of the interior, but also add a special twist and even become key elements in the design.
Types of furniture legs and supports
Furniture legs differ in several important parameters regarding comfort, stability, practicality and aesthetics.
Adjustable. One of the most important characteristics is the ability to change the height. Adjustable designs allow you to set a table or set to the required level and compensate for imperfections in the floor surface. They are usually equipped with a screw fastening. In the manufacture of adjustable products, high-strength plastic or metal is used. The legs are suitable for assembling cabinet furniture, reception desks, cabinets and cabinets.
Thrust bearing. This is the simplest type of legs, used to raise furniture structures above the floor surface. Such products are made of plastic, they have a square shape, and can be used in the assembly of cabinet and upholstered furniture. The thrust bearings are small in height and therefore hidden.
Wheeled. They are also called roller bearings. Usually they are installed on the furniture that needs to be moved - coffee tables, armchairs, cabinets, as well as on pull-out furniture elements. Wheel structures are made of heavy-duty plastic and metal, they vary in diameter, and some models are equipped with a special stopper.
Square support. A device that demonstrates high reliability and includes several types of legs. For example, this is a thrust bearing combined with adjustable supports.
Swivel wheel system. Equipped with a regulating function. Best suited for heavy furniture structures such as cabinets. When the cabinet needs to be moved to another location, the adjustment parts are unscrewed and the item is placed on support wheels. After the cabinet takes its place, the wheels are removed and the adjustable supports are returned, setting the furniture to the required level.
Based on the type of fastening, supports are divided into regular and corner. Regular or universal legs can be attached to any part of the furniture, while corner legs are designed to be attached to the corner of furniture, respectively.
Based on the type of placement, a distinction is made between hidden and external legs.
Hidden ones hide behind the surface of the furniture base. To prevent damage to the floor covering, a thrust bearing is installed on the lower part of the plinth. As a rule, they are equipped with a height adjuster.
External ones are largely decorative and are designed to improve the appearance of furniture, introducing new details into the design of the product, or emphasizing the stylistic direction of the interior. When choosing decorative external supports, it is necessary to take into account the maximum weight of the load for which they are designed. They are forged, cast and wooden, decorated with carvings. Also, there is a type of decorative legs equipped with wheels.
Based on the material used, products are divided into several types:
Aluminum. Aluminum products are the most affordable. They have a long service life and are not afraid of exposure to household chemicals. In addition, aluminum supports can be repainted in any desired color or given a special texture, for example, imitating wood, marble pattern, shine of precious metal and other unusual options. The only disadvantage of aluminum products is the low load they can withstand, usually no more than 500 kg.
Legs made of polypropylene. Another inexpensive type of product, not inferior in quality and strength to other materials. Designed for lightweight structures, as they are designed for a weight of no more than 150 kg. Such models do not harm linoleum or parquet flooring. They are height adjustable and are well suited to compensate for uneven floors. It is also worth noting that the type of plastic in question is resistant to stains and does not require special care.
Wooden. Environmentally friendly, natural material, but at the same time the most expensive. Wooden models are mostly decorative and suitable for expensive upholstered furniture. It is not recommended to use wooden legs in the kitchen or in rooms with high humidity - the wood swells from moisture, loses its original strength, and deformation affects the attractiveness of the appearance.
Inexpensive models of furniture legs are made from such types of wood as:
- pine;
- hornbeam;
- beech;
- poplar;
- ash;
- birch trees
Expensive, elite models are made from hard and dense types of wood, characterized by durability and reliability. This includes such valuable wood species as:
- larch;
- oak;
- ironwood;
- yew;
- wenge and others.
Products made of chrome steel. Best suited for modern interiors. They are distinguished by a stylish appearance due to their pronounced metallic luster. In addition, chrome-plated supports can withstand loads of up to 700 kg, so they are ideally suited for heavy furniture - kitchen sets, wardrobes, dishes or books. Chrome is resistant to mechanical damage, scratches and chemical cleaning agents. Such models can be used in the bathroom or kitchen.
With regard to external design, color and texture, the range of models offered to the buyer is very diverse. They are:
- matte;
- polished;
- nickel plated;
- glossy;
- chrome plated;
- gilded;
- silver plated;
- tinted bronze;
- painted with special enamel.
In addition to the listed materials, bamboo, willow and rattan rods, and glass are also used in the production of furniture supports.
Bamboo. Products made from this material will fill the interior with African or Asian notes, and will also emphasize the exotic style of the room. They are either woven from the stems of a young plant or made from a single bamboo trunk.
Willow twigs, rattan vine. Wicker supports are very light in weight. Typically, such products decorate the interiors of country houses and cottages, as they suit country or eco-style.
Glass. An exquisite material that can be either completely transparent or tinted. Products made from colored glass are also distinguished by their originality. Glass structures are suitable for spacious, bright rooms with a large number of decorative elements made of transparent or colored glass - dishes, vases, lamps and lamps.
Manufacturing materials
Most often, furniture fittings are made from three materials and their various combinations. Legs are made of wood, metal, plastic. Their features:
- Metal supports look quite laconic and attractive. They combine well with other elements of the wardrobe, shelving, and kitchen furniture. They allow you to quickly transform the external aesthetics of products, adding to them a subtle style that does not scream pomp. Today the most popular options are chrome legs or aluminum. The disadvantage of metal supports is their susceptibility to corrosion when exposed to high humidity.
- Wooden supports are suitable for tables, chairs in the kitchen, armchairs, and sofas in the living room. Carved legs from this material will turn furniture into a work of art. However, natural wood has an average resistance to moisture, so it is undesirable to allow prolonged contact of supports with water.
- Plastic legs do not look as catchy as metal ones, but they have better functionality, a larger assortment of standard sizes, and a choice of colors. These supports are relevant for various kitchen set options. However, they will not last such a long time, since mechanical damage greatly spoils the attractiveness of the surface.
For solid wood products, you can choose combined metal supports with a wooden overlay for furniture legs.

How to create a slate bed with your own hands: photos and recommendations
Slate is very easy to use, so summer residents willingly create beds for vegetables and herbs based on it. Such structures hold the earth well within a clearly defined area. At the same time, the beds look neat and attractive. Advantages of asbestos cement boards:
- Possibility of making very long fences for garden beds.
- The material tends to heat up quickly. By raising the soil temperature by several degrees, slate speeds up the process of nutrients reaching the plants.
- Practicality and simple system of use.
- The low price of flat slate for beds reduces the cost of construction.
- Long service life.
- Attractive appearance.
Helpful advice! If desired, asbestos-cement sheets can be painted in any color you like to improve the design of the site.
Neat beds made from leftover slate
In addition to the advantages, the material also has disadvantages. Many experts note the harm of flat slate for beds, because due to overheating, the products contribute to the accelerated evaporation of moisture from the soil, which negatively affects plants in the heat. In addition, during rains, the soil is eroded and light slate sheets tilt, so the owner of the site will need to constantly adjust their position.
DIY technology for making slate beds
Asbestos cement sheets with waves are used as a finishing material for roofing. The remains of the product can be used to arrange beds on the site. The sequence of making beds from wavy slate:
- The material is cut into pieces of the required size.
- The boundaries of future beds are marked on the site and the soil is prepared. A trench is dug in the ground, the depth of which is equal to half the height of the previously prepared pieces of slate.
- The workpieces are placed in the trench, installed in the required position and fixed with the help of soil, which is used to fill the hole. The soil must be compacted.
- To keep the sheets stable, you can use metal pegs to secure them.
Slate is a durable and at the same time fragile material, so you need to be careful when working with tools
Slate sheets can have horizontal or vertical waves. If material with horizontal waves is used in the construction of beds, the shoots of some plant species will run along the recesses. Therefore, you should carefully dig up the soil so as not to damage the fence.
Helpful advice! To get rid of such complications, you can use slate with vertical waves, but this type of material is more difficult to cut.
Do-it-yourself technology for making flat slate beds
If it is planned to manufacture structures from corrugated sheets, then the construction of beds will be accompanied by a minimum amount of waste. In this sense, flat slate is less convenient and practical. It is recommended to use asbestos-cement sheets, the length of which is 1.75 m, for the manufacture of beds.
Slate for making beds can be purchased in the form of ready-made sheets
The process of making beds is as follows:
- The workpiece is cut into two pieces. The length of one segment is 0.7 m, the second is 1 m.
- A trench 0.2 m deep is dug in the ground.
- The prepared slate elements are installed in the trench. Then they are covered with soil, which is carefully compacted.
- Metal corners are prepared and need to be cut to obtain the required size.
- Holes are made in the corners where bolted connections will subsequently be located.
- Metal elements are connected to slate sheets using bolts.
- To prevent corrosion and accelerated deterioration of the metal, the corners should be coated with a primer or paint to protect them from the negative effects of moisture.
- After the material dries, the bed is filled with organic fertilizers. Compost, wood particles, and brushwood are suitable for these purposes. All this is mixed with soil and poured inside the structure.
Flat slate beds can be dismantled if necessary and moved to another convenient location
Important! Slate is considered a fairly durable material, but it has a fragile structure. It is not allowed to drive asbestos-cement slabs into the ground, otherwise they will break
Therefore, the material is installed only in the way described in the technology.
Buying slate sheets for beds: price of products and preparation for use
To cut asbestos-cement sheets, it is better to use a grinder. This type of tool can handle cutting any materials, including slate, pipes, iron, etc. There is one caveat when working with an angle grinder. When cutting material, the tool must be turned so that the dust blown by the wind flies to the side. Asbestos-cement dust is dangerous to human health, so when working with sheets you must wear safety glasses and a cotton-gauze bandage. It is strictly forbidden to use a saw designed for working with wood to cut slate. A person in such conditions risks serious injury.
The soil in beds made of asbestos-cement sheets heats up faster, so plants produce crops earlier than in open soil
Most often, the remains of slate are used to build beds after the roof of the building is covered with it. This applies to corrugated sheets. The assortment of many stores allows you to buy ready-made strips for slate beds. Average prices for asbestos-cement strips for beds:

Uneven floor
When installing any furniture set, especially a kitchen one, it is necessary to use adjustable supports, since the floors may not be very level, and the height difference in different corners of one room can be measured by more than one centimeter. The presence of adjustable plinth legs creates additional convenience when installing on an uneven floor. The simplest adjustable support is a set of screws with a plastic head and a mating part, for example, a regular nut for a leg with an external thread, a “moustache” nut, or a corner bracket. Adjustment of such a leg is carried out by screwing the screw into the mating part by hand or with a screwdriver. The disadvantage of this design is that to adjust the height of the cabinet it is necessary to unload it, lift it, turn the leg, put the cabinet in place, evaluate the adjustment and, if necessary, repeat the sequence of actions, perhaps more than once. Work tables are installed on plastic supports with a height of 80 mm to 170 mm, which are adjustable in height, thanks to which the kitchen countertop acquires a perfectly horizontal position. The work table supports are covered with a plastic removable plinth, which has seals to prevent water from getting under the kitchen base. It's impossible to avoid crumbs and other food debris in the kitchen, but if there is free space between the floor and the bottom of the kitchen unit, then this debris can be easily removed.
Main selection criteria
When choosing a furniture support, you should pay special attention to the following parameters and characteristics:
Availability of soft pads. It is advisable that the legs be equipped with soft fabric pads, usually felt or felt. On the one hand, they protect the bottom of the product from external damage, on the other hand, they maintain the integrity of the floor covering, preventing it from scratching when moving furniture.
Product material. The selection of material occurs, first of all, taking into account the total weight of the furniture structure, and also takes into account the layout of the room and the stylistic orientation of the interior. Metal models are the most durable, followed by wooden and plastic ones. Properly selected material guarantees a long service life of the product, without loss of quality and attractive appearance.
Flooring. If you have a delicate coating that is easily exposed to mechanical stress (for example, parquet), you should opt for products that have a large area of contact with the floor. It is also recommended to purchase soft silicone mats to maintain the integrity of the flooring.
Interior Design. In appearance, the legs should match the style of the furniture and the room as a whole. Some models of decorative products can favorably emphasize the style of the room.
What to do to avoid scratching the floor
By moving a furniture set, you can easily scratch the floor covering, ruining not only its attractive appearance, but also the product itself. There are several ways to prevent this:
- Use nylon bottle caps. They must be installed under the furniture supports themselves. This option also simplifies the rearrangement of large items.
- Place pieces of damp cotton cloth under the legs of the furniture. The material will prevent scratches on the floor, and water will make it easier to move furniture.
- Use raw potatoes. First, it must be cleaned and cut into circles about 7-8 cm thick, with a diameter slightly larger than the furniture support. Next, a recess is made under the legs, and the product moves.
- Buy a rug (thick wool). Place it under the legs of the furniture and then move it carefully. This requires several people: one to pull the rug, the other to pull the furniture.
- Use lard skins. As in other methods, you need to place it under supports and carefully move the furniture. At the end of the procedure, traces of grease can be removed with a cloth and soapy water.
- Buy felt stickers for furniture legs. You can rub the path of movement of the product with paraffin. After this, the furniture will glide well and will not scratch the flooring.
- Cut small pads from unnecessary linoleum or leather.
- Treat the floor covering with soapy water. After this, the furniture will move easily, but the product is more suitable in cases where linoleum is used.
Technology for the production of oak furniture panels, its pros and cons
Using these simple methods, you can easily rearrange any set and other heavy objects, making your work easier and keeping the floor intact. The correct choice of supports is important, since the comfortable operation of the products and the design of the room in general will depend on their quality, material of manufacture and attractive appearance. Furniture legs do not require special care; you just need to periodically wipe them with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust.

There are several approaches to making this part of the table. They can be divided into mechanical and manual.
The main method is to work on a lathe. Finished block - the workpiece is attached to the support.
Rotation begins around its axis, and at this time the device is engaged in cutting out the given shape
Production is simple, and therefore the price is not particularly high. Craftsmen work with flat and semicircular chisels. The finished products have smooth outlines, and the shape can be cylindrical, cone-shaped, teardrop-shaped or spherical.
Beautiful table supports!
If you need to make an original and beautiful product, then the milling method is used. For this purpose, a milling machine was created, in the program of which the pattern parameter is specified. This method is often used when working with expensive types of wood, which eliminates the possibility of chipping defects.
For work, ready-made wood blanks of the desired shape are used.
Hand made carved legs
Carved legs are made on a multi-axis milling machine. Working with it can be computerized, but what is most valued is the unique work of the master. This is the most expensive option, which will allow you to install in your home a table with beautiful legs, the likes of which will not be available anywhere else in the world.
To create a masterpiece, a master has a lot of different tools to work with, often honing his skills over the years
