Design features of the Papasan chair, its species diversity

What is

The original Papasan chair consists of two main elements: a frame and a cushion. The frame is a hemispherical structure made of a special material - rattan, which is extracted from the rattan palm growing in the southern regions of Asia. This type of wood is characterized by high strength and flexibility, making it possible to manufacture curved structures. The hemisphere is mounted on a special spring footrest, also made of rattan.

There are models whose frame is made of metal. The cost of such chairs is less, but they do not look as impressive as rattan ones.

The pillow, which is placed on top of the frame, can be made of various textile materials. They are soft, which makes sitting in the chair as comfortable and enjoyable as possible.

The Papasan chair has earned its popularity due to a large number of advantages:

  1. High degree of operating comfort. Indeed, all owners of such furniture note that you can really relax or even sleep in the chair.
  2. Safety of use. Since the chair is made in the shape of a hemisphere, there are completely no sharp corners. Such furniture can be placed in a nursery.
  3. Papasan goes well with almost any room design. Rattan is ideal for any other set made from various types of wood.
  4. Simplicity of design and assembly. If you really want, you can create such chairs yourself.
  5. Long service life when used correctly. Products made from natural rattan can last a very long time. The pillow wears out the fastest, but replacing it does not take much time or effort.

The diameter of the sphere is usually 80-130 cm, the depth is no more than 100 cm. Most often, users choose a model with a depth of 95 cm. A chair with such parameters is considered the most comfortable. The height of all models is standard – 45 cm.

Advantages and disadvantages

Papasan is a comfortable and unusual furniture option. Before making a choice, it is important to know what advantages and disadvantages it has.

pros Minuses
  1. Comfort. You can rest well in the chair or even take a nap
  2. Safety. The structure has no sharp corners and is difficult to drop.
  3. Easy to assemble. The furniture is easy to assemble yourself - no need to call specialists
  4. Functionality. Comfortable for relaxing, feeding or rocking your baby
  5. Reliability. The frame is resistant to heavy loads
  1. Size. Takes up a lot of space, not suitable for small rooms
  2. Creak. Over time, the structure may begin to creak unpleasantly.
  3. Design. Due to its unusual shape, it will not fit into every interior style.

Varieties

Today, manufacturers offer several Papasan models, differing in functionality and appearance:

  1. Classic round Papasan chair. The design of such products is as simple as possible: a wicker frame with a footrest and a pillow. There are models in which the frame can be detached from the stand and made into a swing, secured with strong ropes or a metal cable.
  2. Swivel chair Papasan. In this case, the design differs only in the footrest, which provides for rotation around its axis. This option is perfect for a child's room, since playing with such a chair gives children a lot of pleasure.
  3. Rocker rocking chair. It also features a footrest, which is made in the shape of a rocking chair. An excellent option for young parents, since such furniture can be used as a cradle. The product is also suitable for older people who prefer to spend a lot of time reading books, watching movies or knitting.
  4. Chelsea. Thanks to the stable round leg, it stands firmly on a flat surface. It has armrests and an oval frame.
  5. Dakota. Combines convenience, reliability and classic performance. It has two rattan armrests and a comfortable high back.

In addition to armchairs, there are also Papasan sofas, which are slightly wider and longer. The design of sofas is the same as that of armchairs.

It should be noted that all varieties differ only in the shape and design of the legs, which most often can be separated from the main frame. Thus, you can order a set of three types of footrests and one main frame and change the type of chair depending on your personal preferences.

PAPASAN CHAIR: Mistakes that can ruin the purchasing experience!
Personal story One day, completely by accident, I saw this unusual chair in a store. It was like nothing I had seen before. The chair immediately attracted my attention: interesting shape, attractive appearance, original design, simplicity - nothing superfluous! To be honest, I couldn’t resist sitting down in it! It was very unusual. Show in full... When you sit in it, it’s as if you were lying down on a bed, but especially for you it was raised a little and became a chair, as if it was hovering above the floor, and you were with it. Incredibly convenient and comfortable!))

I immediately thought how great it would be to sit in it in the evenings, crawling completely into it and covering myself with a blanket. Read books in it, place a small wicker table nearby and drink tea, enjoying the peace and comfort.

I'll give myself this!

On this day, I definitely decided that I would definitely have such a chair, I would give myself one just like that, without any reason. I took time to think (although whatever, I already mentally bought it for myself, I just had to allocate money for the purchase). I came home and decided to find out more about it on the Internet and compare prices. In general, I am used to choosing the best for myself. I like to figure out what I’m dealing with before purchasing, compare the pros and cons, and choose the best one from several options. In addition, I know for sure that prices in retail furniture stores are often higher than in online stores.

It turned out that the chair has even more unobvious advantages

Firstly, the chair is made of a special material - a vine called rattan. This is a very durable material and can withstand a lot of weight, and at the same time it is very light (the chair with a pillow weighs only 12 kilos!). That is, the chair is made of natural “wood”, is environmentally friendly and has natural warmth and energy. It was important for me and I really liked it!)

The chair was also sold in five different colors of the frame (which is made from exactly that material - rattan): from natural light to dark brown. But the pillow, unfortunately, was only beige everywhere. I didn’t really like the look of it, and the fabric itself was kind of rough and loose, but I didn’t find any options.

I studied many sites, read reviews of people who bought it, to find out what nuances and pitfalls there might be, and what is ultimately better to take.

What important things did I learn before buying it for myself?

It turned out that such a chair was sold by many companies at once. I decided to visit a few more stores before purchasing.

At first I noticed that the prices on the sites were on average the same, plus or minus a thousand rubles somewhere. However, there were also stores where the chair was not much cheaper, but where it was much more expensive. Moreover, the photographs were the same or almost the same: the details and appearance of the pillow may have differed, but the design and appearance were almost unchanged (in fact, most sites even had the same pictures).

I called several companies. Where it was cheaper, sellers assured that it was exactly the same as everywhere else. “From the same factory,” everyone answered me, as if by agreement! This seemed very suspicious to me. Either the sellers themselves do not know what they are selling (this actually happens), or they are simply hiding something. Well, it sounds strange, you must admit that all the chairs in all the stores are supposedly made in one single place in Indonesia (the birthplace of rattan) and that’s all. I was categorically not satisfied with the answers and I decided to personally check that there really were no differences by visiting a couple of more stores.

And here a discovery awaited me, both pleasant and not so pleasant.

In the first store, the chair turned out to be a little smaller in diameter than the one I had originally seen, not 120 cm, but 115. Well, okay, it was almost unobvious. But something about him was completely different. Pillow! Unlike the first one, this pillow was like a thin “pancake”, kind of flat. And fabric. Smoother and thinner. I sat down and everything became clear, it was not so comfortable to sit, it felt like it was harder to sit, the frame could be felt through the pillow. Then I immediately understood why this chair was so much cheaper, it seems like 3 thousand less. Having studied it a little more closely, I noticed that the frame was more “liquid”: the rattan was thinner and somehow creaked, the appearance of this chair did not inspire strength and trust. I left the store a little upset. “Saving” was no longer possible. This kind of savings definitely doesn’t suit me! It was a completely different “quality”, or rather, its absence. I also realized that the pillow - its fluffiness and quality - play a much more important role, because it is the chair itself!

Manufacturing materials

As mentioned above, the most common material used is rattan, but there are models made from wicker. The Papasan chair, made of rattan and wicker, is not recommended to be left in direct sunlight, as the furniture may fade under the influence of ultraviolet radiation. Contact with water is not allowed, as water can cause the wood to swell and collapse. Removal of dust and dirt is carried out using a damp or dry cloth.

There are models made of plastic. The main advantage of such furniture is its low price and the ability to be used outdoors. However, plastic is not very strong and therefore durable.

Also recently, models whose frames are made of stainless steel have become popular. They are characterized by maximum strength and durability. These options are ideal for suburban conditions.

Holofiber, foam rubber or polyurethane foam crumbs are used to fill pillows. External covers are most often made from chenille, flock, velor, jacquard, and artificial suede. For chairs that are planned to be used in a personal plot, polyester would be the best option. Due to the fact that the filler is in the inner case, the outer one can be removed for washing, if the fabric allows it.

The average cost of Papasan chairs is 11-20 thousand rubles. The price depends on the materials used.

Specifics of Papasan round wicker chair models

For pleasant relaxation, receiving guests and decorating the room, a swivel wicker chair is used in various artistic designs. It is a large bowl placed on a solid base, with pillows on top for comfort. The characteristics of this type of furniture are a high level of comfort, productivity and laconic appearance. There is a huge range of models that have their own distinctive features.

The key models are:

  • traditional round chair on a stand base. This model is considered to precede all others. Characterized by a high level of reliability, commonality and comfort;
  • unusual wicker papasan Rocker chair. The model differs in the presence of runners: they are also a good support, but also with a swing function. The heaviest load is likely to be up to 122 kg. There are folding and traditional chairs, it is recommended to note all characteristics during consultation with the manager;
  • "Dakota." It is a combination of a traditional form and a favorable level of convenience. The model has armrests, a nice nice frame;
  • Chelsea. is a new type of Papasan chair. The distinctive features are considered to be a traditional appearance, smooth lines and as much comfort as possible;
  • The rotating design is appreciated by lovers of extraordinary furniture products. What’s special here is not only the rotation function, but also the absence of sounds during movement. Similar models are appropriate in the garden, summer covered terrace.

Wicker chairs have many positive qualities: bright design, comfortable use, the ability to rock a child to sleep, change pillow covers, thus changing the atmosphere in the room.

How to assemble

Many owners are faced with the question of how to assemble the Papasan chair, since most often it is delivered disassembled due to its large dimensions. The assembly instructions are as simple as possible; even inexperienced users can cope with this task in literally 20 minutes. The process includes the following steps:

  1. Unpacking the box. Typically the box includes the following items: frame, footrest, cushion, as well as fasteners and possibly lubricants.
  2. Next, lubricate the springs at the base.
  3. Afterwards, connect the main frame with the footrest. Most models are bolted, so assembly will require a set of wrenches. However, there are also options with a connection with adhesive tape; here the fastening is done as quickly as possible. Fixation with screws and bolts is more reliable.
  4. The final stage is laying the pillow.

Handicraft lovers who have experience in weaving can make similar chairs on their own. This requires materials such as rattan or wicker, special scissors or pruning shears. The work takes a lot of time and requires patience. To make a Papasan chair from steel, all you need is a metal rod, profile, pipes and welding skills.

Types of structures

Furnishing your own home with beautiful furniture made from attractive natural materials is easy; the main thing is to choose a convenient type of support. It all depends on the type of base. The rattan papasan chair is divided into:

  • traditional models equipped with standard legs or rounded bases. A miniature, attractive and therefore popular option for a coffee table are traditional rattan chairs with armrests and a wide, comfortable back. The round base is commonly used in larger bowl-shaped chairs. It is distinguished by its great reliability and durability: it is impossible to involuntarily roll over on such a chair;
  • Rocking chairs with rattan runners are in demand for models of any age. There are runners that are twisted at the top and placed under the back, or they are short rods. Due to its own design, the papasan rocking chair would be appropriate in a nursery, in a kitchen room, or on the summer covered terrace of a house outside the city. If the product stops swinging, you need to check the integrity of the runners, if there is a need to lubricate them;
  • spring models are equipped with 2 round bases of various diameters, which fold into one when the chair moves. The design provides rhythmic rocking down, up, back, forward and sideways. In case the mechanism stops working smoothly, jams or creaks, you should check the structural integrity, the presence of foreign objects between the springs, and lubricate the mechanism parts.

Not heavy weight, absence of corners with sharp ends, laconic design makes papasan furniture functional, mobile and safe for use by children.
