Organization of a work area with a desk in children's rooms

Working area by the window in the nursery - its pros and cons

Placing a desktop near a window has several important nuances that should not be forgotten. Among the advantages of such a planning solution:

  • Bright light. The area near the window is the most illuminated place in the room during the daytime, so you don’t need to use artificial lighting.
  • Compactness. Usually, any other placement of a desk in a nursery is not so compact, with the exception of models combined with a bed in a two-story structure.
  • Aesthetics. A room with a long table, even the entire width - from wall to wall - does not look cluttered with furniture, although very spacious shelves and storage systems can be placed above and below the tabletop.
  • Space saving. Using all the space above and below the countertop, you can eliminate the bookcase by storing all your study supplies in the work area. This planning idea will allow you not to limit the free space for children’s games and sports training.

Saving space in favor of space in the room
There are also disadvantages:

  • The light is too bright. This is true for rooms facing south. You will have to install blinds to adjust the lighting during the daytime.
  • The battery is most often located under the window, so it will have to be covered with a perforated screen to prevent the risk of burns for the child.
  • A distraction. If there is something more interesting outside the window than the blank wall of a neighboring building, then the child will be distracted from doing his homework to watch what is happening in the yard.
  • You won’t be able to take the built-in table with you if you move, since it won’t fit in the new room in size.
  • Access to the window becomes more difficult and it is more difficult to clean.

You can hang both Roman and regular blinds on southern windows.
In a small room, the window sill and tabletop are combined to save space. This solution may require high chairs with a large distance from the floor to the lower border of the window.

Problems and solutions

Convection. The battery was placed under the window for a reason. It prevents cold drafts from appearing by mixing hot air from the radiator with cold air from the window. The thermal curtain also prevents the windows from fogging up. Hot air heats the window and the condensation evaporates. Holes in the countertop can cope with poor circulation of warm air. They can be made round or oblong (depending on the design of the structure). The holes are closed with decorative grilles.

Strength. Double-glazed window sills are made of polyvinyl chloride. In other words, they are 80% made of air. For a durable countertop, you will have to buy a more load-resistant material.

As a tabletop, you can use laminated chipboard or artificial stone (already pre-cut according to the drawing). For additional support, you can use furniture wooden or metal legs. Important: if the legs are not secured to the floor, they will “slide” under the structure.

General style. With such a prominent window sill, it is impossible to hang long curtains (tulle) on the floor. Choose blinds or Roman shades.

Functionality of a children's table

You can use such a good idea as a window-sill table with equal success for one or two or three children. The main thing is that the width of the wall is sufficient. It is not necessary to make separate sections; it is enough to provide each child with his own seat.

Roll-out cabinets serve as dividers

The design of the tabletop itself and the drawers underneath deserve special attention. Today children cannot do without their own computers. To do this, it is necessary to provide a sufficient number of sockets near the table, and in the table itself the necessary holes for wires, and even better, a roll-out shelf for the keyboard.

If the window sill is too narrow, the tabletop is extended to provide sufficient work space.

The tabletop has become spacious thanks to the side shelving

How to set up a desk for multiple users?

When setting up tables for multiple users, it is worth considering not only their location relative to the light and door, but also from the point of view of interpersonal relationships. It is an unfavorable situation when people are forced to sit back to back. On the other hand, if they are sitting face to face, the distance should be at least 120 cm.

Placing a desk directly next to a window has its advantages. You can relax by taking a break from work to watch the street. If there is a lot of greenery in the yard, then the landscape looks simply irresistible.

The choice of materials for making a table in the interior of a nursery

The most durable materials are metal and wood. Furniture made from them is expensive, but also lasts for decades. In children's rooms, more affordable materials are often used: chipboard, MDF, and plastic.

Tree

A table for a children's room along the window made of solid pine, birch, beech or oak is not only beautiful, but also extremely environmentally friendly. Such furniture is immediately installed for an adult, and chairs or armchairs that can be adjusted in height are purchased for the table.

Monumental and very cozy

Natural wood is a heavy and durable material. This is another argument in favor of buying a wooden table, because it is not afraid of any children's pranks.

Chipboard and MDF

There is an obvious difference between these two materials: MDF is more expensive. But this is not the only way they differ from each other. The table of characteristics will help you most clearly compare chipboard with MDF.

Both materials are flammable and do not come into direct contact with water. However, in the production of children's furniture, moisture-resistant MDF panels are used, whose resistance to swelling from liquids accidentally spilled on the tabletop is higher than that of chipboard.

All furniture made from MDF is suitable for a child’s room, and from chipboard only those made from boards of environmental safety class E1 (should be checked in the product passport).

Glass

A table for the children's room near the window can be purchased with a glass top. This design solution has a very valuable property - in a cramped room such furniture will not create an unwanted feeling of clutter. Impact-resistant glass can be completely transparent or colored.

How to do it yourself?

The best option is if the creation of a window sill-countertop coincides with the replacement of windows. If repair work is not expected in the near future, then it is necessary to either remove the old window sill or glue the product with liquid nails on top of the old one.

In order to make a window sill-tabletop, you must first prepare a layout, decide on the shape and size of the worktop and select the material to be made.

It should be taken into account that the optimal height of the window sill is 75 cm and width is 50 cm.

The highest quality material is wood. High-quality oak, cherry, and maple wood can be used. The wooden tabletop is strong and durable. However, the price will be more expensive than the others.

MDF is a cheaper option that can be easily processed. The sheet thickness should be 15-19 mm. The main thing is to choose the right sheet thickness to avoid problems with opening the window. Chipboard is an option similar in characteristics to MDF, but it requires pre-processing: plastering and painting.

  • metal chrome tubes (for table legs);
  • self-tapping screws;
  • polyurethane foam;
  • sealant;
  • 2 plastic plugs.

The tools you need are a tape measure, a pencil with a ruler, a jigsaw, a level and a grinder.

Stages of making a tabletop with your own hands:

  1. Apply markings to the material of the future countertop.
  2. Using an electric jigsaw, cut out the outline.
  3. Taking into account the location of the radiator on the countertop, cut holes with a diameter of 36 mm (this is done to avoid problems with air circulation in the room).
  4. Install the tabletop in the window opening. On the window side, bars are used, and on the other side, a perforated metal profile is used, bent at an angle of 90°.
  5. Use a level to check that the product is horizontal.
  6. Using polyurethane foam, fill the vacated space and wait until it dries. Then treat all joints with sealant.
  7. After cutting to the desired length, install the chrome legs. Insert plastic plugs from the underside of the legs, and secure the legs to the tabletop using self-tapping screws and a flange.

With a properly manufactured and installed product, a room with a table instead of a window sill will not only look unusual and stylish, but also meet all the requirements of practicality and comfort.

Types of structures

A table by the window in a nursery can only be a tabletop, built into the wall or combined with the plane of the window sill. This is the simplest option. The next most popular model is with floor cabinets and drawers, which is very practical and comfortable, because all the little things you need for studying are always at hand and in perfect order.

Various bedside tables and drawers make the work area more comfortable

The third option is complemented by a superstructure in the form of open shelves or cabinets with doors, where you can store a thousand different things - from toys to books. Storage sections are located on one or both sides of the window, filling the space up to the ceiling or to the height of the window opening.

Shelves on the right and left up to the ceiling

The beauty of this project is that it doesn't have to be installed right away. The upper tier can be purchased later if this is not immediately possible.

Criterias of choice

When decorating a window in a children's room, designers recommend combining aesthetics and practicality, and being guided by the following rules for choosing window drapery:

During the daytime, curtains should not prevent sunlight from entering the room. It is better to avoid dense, heavy fabrics - they not only excessively darken the room, but also create additional stress on the cornice.

Preferred are high-quality natural fabrics and materials that can withstand frequent washing without losing their appearance and shape, for example, linen, cotton, bamboo.

A child is unlikely to appreciate long, voluminous curtains with designer draperies, but you will get tired tidying up these wonderful dust collectors. The trend in recent years has been light, shortened curtains or prefabricated (rolled) varieties.

Design and colors

When choosing furnishings for a nursery, you should take into account many things: the gender of the children, their taste preferences, interests and hobbies. Designers recommend abandoning dark and depressing shades that narrow the space. From the child’s favorite flowers, the most cheerful and positive ones are chosen, setting the mood for a fruitful pastime.

Design ideas for boys

Future men try to imitate their older relatives and choose “masculine” colors: blue, woody shades, white, silver, green, purple, black. But it would be a mistake to leave the nursery decor without truly bright colors. They can be used for individual elements of the work area by the window - chairs, curtains, floor decoration, walls, etc.

Workplace for a future athlete

It’s good when there is something in the interior that reminds you of the child’s main hobby.

Design ideas for girls

Girlish colors are very diverse: the whole pastel range, as well as pink, red, white, metallic and many others. When choosing colors, it is worth remembering that the nursery environment should set the mood for work and not distract from the educational process. Therefore, it is worth abandoning the dominance of too bright colors, giving preference to subdued shades. In this case, the interior can be easily changed with the help of new bright accessories.

Bright and very cozy

Design for two children

To design a work area for two children, you will first have to come to a compromise. In such situations, designers recommend starting from the opposite. When too much controversy arises when choosing a color scheme, you should exclude those shades that both equally dislike. The best solution will be somewhere in the middle. Of the remaining colors, preference is given to the calmest one.

Discreet work area design for two boys

In finishing it is necessary to maintain symmetry. It is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also functional. There is no reason to argue about whose workplace is on the right and whose is on the left.

The most successful layout options for two:

  • Corner layout. The work area covers the area near the window and the adjacent wall. Children will have to sit sideways to each other. This solution is most suitable for small rooms with a short wall with a window opening, when the beds in the remaining space are installed in the form of a bunk structure.
  • The tabletop is shaped like the letter “P”. This is a great layout for large rooms, where work desks are located along opposite walls, and there is an area for joint creativity near the window.
  • If space allows, then you can place two tables next to the wall near the window, leaving a free passage between them. In this case, the children will sit with their backs to the front door.

Desk for two children

In our country, one room is often shared by two or even three children, each of whom needs their own workspace. In this case, each child should have his own corner where he can store textbooks, do homework, or just draw. If children have shared drawers, conflicts cannot be avoided, but two separate cabinets or shelves will solve this problem.

When organizing such places, the ideal solution would be to place the schoolchildren’s study area near the window. Modern furniture manufacturers offer a lot of solutions that allow you to install not only a table, but also cabinets for it. The area above the workspace is reserved for lamps and hanging shelves.

In this pencil-shaped room there are three workplaces at once: two near the window and one near the wall. Each of the children has their own corner.

Variants of shapes and sizes of tables by the window

Classic desks have rectangular table tops and side legs. In addition to this design, you can choose a shaped tabletop, as well as a transformable one, which can be changed as children grow.

The figured table plays up the bay window in the nursery layout

It is very important to remember not only the aesthetic component of the nursery design, but also how it will affect the child’s health. Table sizes are selected based on the following rules:

  • The solar plexus of a sitting child should be level with the plane of the tabletop, and the elbow of the hand lowered down should be 5 cm lower.
  • There should be a distance of at least 10 cm between the bottom plane of the tabletop and the knees of a sitting child.
  • The shortest tabletop has a length of at least 1 m, but the elbows of a sitting child should easily fit on it even when spread apart.
  • The size of the table should be such as to accommodate everything necessary for study: textbooks, notebooks, stationery. A narrow desk about 60 cm wide will suit a first grader, but a high school student will need a table 80 cm wide.
  • If there is a monitor on the table, then there should be a minimum distance of 40 cm between it and the child’s eyes.

Designer tips

Before you go to the store for a table or order it from a craftsman, in addition to the quality of the product, you need to take into account such data as the child’s gender, age, height and preferences. The color scheme of furniture facades and countertops also matters. Colors can influence a child's psyche. Which shade predominates in the space will directly affect the child’s mood and academic performance.

Installation options: how to fit into the interior

An ordinary desk with one or two cabinets with drawers - this option is only suitable for a child’s room designed for one person. But it is not very good for one student either, since it is very difficult to fit all the supplies for study, a computer and something “for the soul” on a small tabletop. It's better to think about a broader model with add-ons.

A good solution - a lot of light falls from the right, and wall cabinets are included with the cabinets

A long table can be built into the space between opposite walls, then it will be possible to organize a voluminous storage system above and below the tabletop. The advantage of this solution is that the room does not look cluttered, even if the shelves take up the entire partition up to the ceiling.

In a small-sized nursery, you should think about combining a window sill with a table. This will allow you to gain precious space to leave a little room for games. The passages remain as free as possible, which is important from the point of view of convenience and safety.

Combining a window sill and a workplace is a good idea

L-shaped corner tables are very popular. Typically, one side is reserved for academic activities and the other for hobbies. It is convenient to install a computer monitor at the forefront. The same layout can be used for two schoolchildren.

A good addition is a tall pencil case against a blank wall, turning the table and cabinet into a single ensemble.

You can make a place for children's educational and creative activities near the window truly comfortable in different ways. In this case, you should be guided by the dimensions of the room, style preferences, but do not forget to take into account the opinion of the schoolchildren themselves, because they are the ones who will have to spend their free time from studying in the room every day. Arrangement options

A common desk for two children should only be purchased if it is impossible to place two separate ones in different parts of the room.

Along the window

The most convenient option for most children's rooms is a desk located along the window. Ideally, its tabletop extends from one wall to another, providing children with ample space for activities. Standard models may not be suitable, so the services of furniture companies will be needed. The window sill can be replaced with an extended countertop.

When choosing such a model, you should pay attention to:

  • the presence of a separator between two workstations. Its role can be played by a bookcase located in the middle of the tabletop or a lower cabinet. It is impossible to completely keep children from communicating while doing homework, but helping them concentrate is necessary.
  • temperament. A desk along the window fits well into almost any interior, but this option is not suitable for everyone. Many schoolchildren, especially younger ones (7-10 years old), have difficulty concentrating. In this case, you should not place it near the window - children will be constantly distracted by external stimuli. It is better to choose a corner option.
  • additional attributes. A central heating radiator is usually located near the window. Staying in such close proximity to a heat source for a long time can be detrimental and have a negative impact on your health. Therefore, it is advisable to purchase a desk with a back wall and frequently ventilate the nursery.

Corner option

If the area of the room allows, then you can choose a corner table where both tabletops have the same dimensions.

A simple solution would be to purchase identical tables for each child, and arrange them in the letter “L”, and place a bedside table between them.

The corner location has significant advantages. Firstly, in the nursery, by using a free corner, you do not need to allocate an entire wall for a work area, but you can use it for a second separate bed. Secondly, schoolchildren are less distracted by each other.

Table along the wall

In a long nursery, it would be good to place a common table along one of the walls. The main thing is to choose it correctly. For right-handed people, the light from the window should fall from the left side, and for left-handed people - from the right. But at the same time, it is necessary to provide additional table lighting.

This arrangement is one of the most popular types of arranging a work area for two children. It resembles installing a table along a window, but in this case, shelves can be placed above the tabletop.

The task of adults is to cultivate the correct attitude of schoolchildren towards the educational process. “Learning is light,” but they have yet to realize this. Both boys and girls up to the age of 12 feel a psychological need to play, so you shouldn’t spend all their time studying. The possibility of relaxation and the presence of a well-equipped workplace will have a beneficial effect on the academic performance of both children.

Bathroom idea: mirrors on both sides of the window

In bathrooms with a window in the center of the wall, there are traditionally two washbasins with mirrors: one to the right of the window opening, the other to the left. Mirrors usually hang at the same level as the window and often follow its size and shape. It is both impressive and comfortable.

Cupboards on each side of the window

In the kitchen or living room, corners can be given to buffets. These pieces of furniture add a touch of tradition to the interior and create an atmosphere of family comfort.

It is advisable that the doors of the cupboards be at least partially glass. In this design, they harmonize with the window and make the room more elegant.

If there is not enough space on the sides of the window, corner buffets will be a rational solution.

Beds on both sides of the window

In a nursery designed for two children, or in the bedroom of spouses who prefer separate beds, sleeping places can be placed in the corners near the windows.

The beds seem to be built into the space. To add coziness to the sleeping areas, you can order corner headboards. It will be warmer to sleep with them.

If you curtain the entire wall with a window, the area at the head of the beds will be decorated with drapery - a variation of the canopy, which will give the bedroom a softer and more romantic look.

Interesting solutions for decorating a place near a window

But the area around the window can be multifunctional and practical if done wisely. If there is a beautiful landscape behind the glass, it would be nice to set up a dining table nearby where the whole family would gather, or a work area or sink to turn a boring process into a more interesting one. Next, we will consider the most popular options, each of which is good in its own way.

Window sill turning into table top

The design can be made at the same height, or have a two-level surface. A current solution for small areas when you have to save every centimeter. The materials used are artificial Corian, MDF, laminated chipboard, and moisture-resistant plasterboard. You can make an original, stylish bar counter instead of a tabletop.

Installing a sink in front of a window

The option looks original, not boring. This arrangement increases the space for the work area, which is beneficial for small rooms. Being close to the window will provide excellent illumination of the sink during the day, without the need to spend money on lighting. The advantages also include the psychological factor - washing dishes and watching what is happening through the window is much more interesting.

The disadvantages include difficulties with ventilation, the tap will interfere with opening, you will need to think about its location on the side or buy special faucet models. If you have a wooden frame, you will have to replace it with PVC, since wood does not tolerate high humidity.

Another disadvantage is the higher cost of cleaning from flying splashes of water and grease on glass and curtains. In this case, blinds and roller models are more suitable.

Window sill as a work area

Provides maximum practicality of layout, space saving and convenience for housewives. In this case, the window sill expands in the form of a tabletop, on which you can cut vegetables and cook food. Some types of design provide for the installation of a hob or sink on such a working area.

Installing a storage system under a window

Installing drawers, shelves, niches under the countertop, window sill makes it possible for additional economical arrangement of dishes, small household appliances, and towels. Some projects even place a washing machine in this area.

Attention! Before organizing storage space under the window, carefully consider where to put the radiator and how to solve the problem with subsequent heating in the room.

Dining area by the window

Convenient for large rooms with wide glazing. Suitable for beautiful scenery outside the window. A family dining at such a table will certainly receive a charge of positivity and good mood. In small kitchens, you can mount a bar counter or countertop near the window. The zone will be approached from only one or two sides, which may cause some inconvenience.

Seats near the window

A comfortable layout may include elements of upholstered furniture, a corner, and a bed on the windowsill. Suitable only for large kitchens where there is no need to save space.
