Selecting and installing a lock for a sliding wardrobe
The closet lock must perform a locking function and serve reliably for many years.
Installation of the mechanism is quite simple and does not require special skills. Today everyone can afford a wardrobe. It is compact, roomy and convenient. Regardless of whether you purchase a finished product, make it to order, or make it yourself, you should decide in advance whether you will need a lock for the sliding wardrobe. Most often, families with small children or owners of office premises think about locks.
Communities › DIY › Blog › Child locking of wardrobe doors
Good afternoon, amateurs and masters!
From the day my daughter started walking, I already began to think about how to close the closet from her. After all, in the stock there is nothing except the clamps on the lower rails, or rather there is, but those locks are hard to get, and also not so easy to install. Having monitored the local market, I came to the conclusion that they are definitely not so easy to find here.
Time passed, the child grew, and the bunny grew up to one and a half years old and actively began to climb the shelves of the closet. The latches in the rails do not restrain the child. Therefore, some kind of stopper was needed. Again I actively googled the Internet and seemed to have found an interesting and familiar castle. But ordering it and delivering it is very problematic. But there are stock fittings, according to the Internet again - very difficult installation. That's why it dawned on me. Like Newton in his time, closing the plastic window, I took a closer look at the limiter. And I realized how to use it effectively!
There is only one thing, aesthetic, BUT! It comes in two versions, white (costs 50 rubles) and brown (100 rubles), which is why brown costs twice as much as xs, but since my furniture is made in wenge, it just fits perfectly enchantingly. If you don't look closely, it's not so easy to see it.
Moreover, it’s worth clarifying. The doors can be fixed with one “plastic window stop”, only in the position in the photo above, i.e. the doors on one rail are moved all the way to the left, and the others to the right.
It fulfills its function of keeping the child out of the closet (and the cat, who has also learned to climb into it by pushing it aside with his paw) with a bang! Installation is simple, functionality is practical! I've been using it for several months now and nothing has broken.
Afterword:
I work with laminated chipboard just for myself, I have assembled a luxurious bed, a wardrobe, a kitchen, several ordinary cabinets, an ottoman and a bunch of other things. It always turns out to be at least two times cheaper than when buying the same product in a store, and as with a kitchen and a wardrobe, three times or more, it’s not realistic that the price tags for these products in the workshops are too high! So, if you have hands, try it, buy only a convenient and not bulky 10.8-12 V screwdriver (with a small battery, it’s more convenient to work).

Types of locks, features of choice
The cabinet lock securely locks the doors in the closed position. There are several types of devices:
Also, locks vary significantly in size, material of manufacture, and complexity of execution. The lock mechanism can be either simple or complex:
- A simple one resembles an ordinary hinge that holds a door.
- The complex mechanism is equipped with a key, which is reliable protection, or even a code system.
Choosing a lock for a sliding wardrobe is not difficult. Initially, you need to decide on the reason why the owner decided to purchase a new mechanism: the presence of children (pets), protection against burglary, breakdown of the old lock, door fixation.
- The size of the mechanism must correspond to the size of the wardrobe.
- The material used to make the cabinet is important, because sometimes it is simply impossible to install a lock. The thickness of the door leaf plays a huge role.
- The cost of complex systems is low, so it is better to choose a reliable mechanism.
- If the cabinet has two doors, one lock is installed; for a three-door cabinet, you need to purchase two mechanisms.
An example of a do-it-yourself wardrobe lock:
Among mechanical systems, the most reliable is the tubular shut-off system. When you come to the store, you need to carefully examine the products of various manufacturers and check what you like. The variety of models allows you to choose a fitting option that will not only secure the doors, but also look impressive.
Features of rim locks
Such fitting options are superior to mortise fittings in that they require much simpler installation. Even a beginner can cope with installation work.
Most often, products are attached to doors, drawers and mounted on double-leaf furniture doors.
Depending on the mechanism, overhead locks for furniture are divided into several subcategories:
As practice shows, when installing furniture locks on glass, the most common are locks with a latch button.
It is also advantageous to install fittings equipped with a retractable mechanism on the glass. It has an elongated body and a rotary opening system. If you are thinking about installing a lock on a glass door or flap, also take a closer look at rack and pinion mechanisms. A special gear strip is included in the kit for them.
Those rim locks that come with a key are considered more reliable, and the key itself is stored in a specific and inaccessible place.
If the purpose of the lock is purely to prevent accidental opening, it is not at all necessary to take the hardware with a key.
Installation options
Initially, you need to determine what material the doors are made of:
This is very important, because the installation process depends on the material. Let's look at the most common installation options:
- Full mortise is suitable for doors with glass and chipboard.
- The lock escutcheon is ideal for doors made of glass and with mirrors.
- Partial insertion is used for cabinets made of laminated chipboard.
There are more complex models on sale: magnetic, electromagnetic. They are not recommended to be installed on cabinet doors, since during installation the weight of the structure is also calculated, which is difficult to implement at home.
Purpose and features
Furniture locks belong to the group of detachable fastening fittings, which also includes door handles, clamps, latches, hooks and latches. According to the structure of the mechanism, they are divided into certain categories. The design of the device depends on the material it is made of. Due to the fact that furniture locks are designed for a certain thickness of material, where the installation takes place, their structure will differ.
Furniture locks are used on cabinet doors, drawers, wooden safes, bedside tables, wall cabinets and other parts of furniture items. To understand what the products are intended for, you should consider their features:
The main purpose of locks is to ensure secure storage of documents and other valuables. Another functional purpose is to close doors that are constantly opening.
Installation process
Let's consider the process of inserting a standard lock with a key, consisting of the following elements:
- Tubular core (varies in diameter).
- Overlay strip (plastic or metal).
- Response plate.
To work, you need a minimum of tools: drill, screwdriver, forstner cutter of suitable diameter (not always required), screwdriver, screws, pencil. If the lock is semi-mortise, then you need to drill a hole under the core using a cutter of the required diameter. For overhead mechanisms, all the work comes down to drilling thin holes for self-tapping screws. There may be two or four.
Initially, the location of the lock is determined. The center of the door is ideal for this. Using a pencil makes marks easy. Now the preparatory work is done: holes are drilled.
After the lock is secured, a strike plate is attached to the second door. A little trick: close the doors, apply a strip and outline it with a pencil. Now it is easily attached to the canvas in the open position.
Speaking about furniture locks, we cannot help but recall that for glass and metal doors you will need to use the appropriate drills. If they are not available, consider the cost when purchasing the lock. In some cases, it is appropriate to call a specialist.

Methods for opening the lock mechanism
Before we begin a detailed study of possible opening options, watch the video on how to open locks using an improvised master key:
Now let's look at options for how to open a lock without keys yourself using a paper clip or a hairpin.
First way
This option is used if it is necessary to open pin door security systems:
Tip: Practice using pressure. Because with a large load the paperclip will bend, and with a small load the lock will not open.
Once you practice, you will be able to open this type of lock quickly using paper clips.
Important! All methods are provided for informational purposes only, and not for committing illegal actions.
Second option
If your interior door has slammed and there is no key, then the second method is suitable, how to open the lock with a hairpin or paper clip. To prepare a hairpin for work, you need to bend it in the same way as a paperclip, since they are the same in thickness and material.
Opening using an arc We move on to the next option for opening locks.
Third way
To open a latch lock using a paperclip or a hairpin, do the following:
Tensioner option for a small lock A hairpin can be useful if the key to your suitcase is lost:
So, when you go on a trip with a locked suitcase, take a hairpin with you just in case.
Sliding door lock
Sliding interior doors have long been common in modern interiors. They have many positive qualities and help to significantly save useful space in the room. The modern market offers models made of metal, glass or natural wood. At the same time, locks for sliding doors will be installed on the canvas, which are slightly different from traditional designs on swing models. The other fittings are also slightly different.
But door leaves are not always equipped with accessories. Often when renovating an apartment, home craftsmen prefer to make such a door with their own hands. In this case, the door leaf, sliding mechanism and fittings for the leaf are purchased separately. Therefore, it is important to know what a modern sliding door lock is, how to choose and install it.
High tech locks
To ensure high reliability, hardware manufacturers today offer high-tech locks that differ in operating principles from previous options. To understand the classification and purpose of such locks, it is recommended to look at the proposed table with characteristics.
Type | Installation Features | Advantages | Flaws |
Code | Locks can be electronic or mechanical, which is chosen depending on the preferences of the furniture owner. The locks are supplied with bolts and are completely ready for installation. In addition, a code-type furniture lock comes with a magnetic key, a universal key, or no key, which affects the fastening method. | By choosing the mechanical option, you can dial a large number of code combinations per day until the desired combination works. This is useful if the digital code has been lost. This type of lock can only be cracked using an infinite set of numerical combinations or using a special determinant. | Due to its bulkiness, this type of device is not always convenient to install on cabinet doors. |
Electromagnetic | First, the cabinet door leaf is marked, after which the lock plate is screwed on. Next, a cable is inserted into the installation compartment and the lock's power is connected. | They cannot be hacked using a master key, have an easy degree of unlocking, long service life, and are easy to install. Furniture locks are resistant to corrosion and have a high degree of protection. | Dependency on electricity: the problem is solved by installing a backup power source. |
Electromechanical | Consists of a lock, power supply and control. It is easy to control using a remote control. If the power is turned off, programming may fail. | The device has good repairability. | It is not suitable for installation in damp rooms, therefore, it is impossible to attach the lock to the door of a bathroom cabinet. |
Electronic lock for furniture | An improved method of protecting valuables in a furniture product. The work is carried out through the use of an electronic chip or card. To install the device, first install the mechanical part, after which the wiring is connected. | Hidden location of the locking system, no key, ability to quickly change the code combination, ease of unlocking. | The furniture lock depends on the power supply; the models are not resistant to temperature changes and are not durable. |
It is up to the owner of the room to decide which type of lock to choose for installation on furniture. Mechanical options are easy to install and operate, but locks developed using new technology are considered more reliable.

What types of locks are there?
These products are divided among themselves according to several characteristics. Locks are divided according to the principle of operation, the type of installation, as well as the location of the product.
If we talk about the principle of operation of locking devices, we distinguish between mechanical systems and electromechanical ones.
The device of a simple mechanical lock
The modern market offers many types of locks for sliding doors. Let's start with the simplest product. So, in such locking mechanisms, instead of the usual bolt, a special hook is used. It comes out of the lock body and falls into a special hole on the second part. It can be located on the door frame or on the second door leaf.
Since the coupling between the bolt and the counterpart of the lock is quite rigid, it will not open without a special key if it is locked with a similar lock for sliding doors. The key, in turn, may look like a pin or like a cylinder with jagged edges cut into it.
The simplest mechanical device must be equipped with additional elements. Thus, the kit includes a special bar equipped with a rotary handle. This strip will be recessed into the canvas during installation.
The specificity of this lock bar for a sliding door is in the “lamb” shape, which is pressed against the bar and does not interfere with the movement of the door leaf along the guides. In order to use the lock, the “lamb” is bent and the handle is turned to the side. If the door is not locked at this moment, then you can easily open it.
Also, a lock for a sliding door must be equipped with a bar on which the response mechanism is installed. For a single leaf door it is installed on the door frame. If the door is double-leaf, the strip cuts into the cavity of the second leaf.
Also, any product, even the simplest one, includes a secret mechanism with a hook and a keyhole.
The choice of mechanical accessories for doors of this type is quite wide. Without much difficulty, you can choose the one that suits you in terms of design, color, and operating principle. The operating principle of mechanical locks is practically the same. Different models from different price categories use similar mechanisms. These sliding door locks are quite reliable and durable.
Installation Tips
If you know how to work with furniture and power tools, then you will not encounter any obstacles to the correct installation of any type of lock.
Do not forget that locking device kits are always supplied with everything necessary, including detailed installation instructions. It is from this that I advise you to start first. But don’t forget about the general recommendations.
The principle of installing locks on different types of cabinet doors is identical. Therefore, the elements are mounted on the coupe in exactly the same way as on the same swing doors.
To clarify some things, let’s look at the main nuances of installing two types of protective and blocking structures.
Mortise locks
To work, you will need to prepare a drill, marking tools, a screwdriver or a screwdriver.
The process involves performing several sequential actions:
I recommend checking the functionality of the lock itself before purchasing it. Make sure the key turns, the magnet engages, or the system responds to the entered unlock code.
Rim locks
Here the installation principle is slightly different. But there is nothing complicated about the DIY installation operation.
The following steps should be performed sequentially:
If you use a magnetic lock, then installation is even easier. You just need to secure the mechanism to the selected area of the wardrobe. No need to drill mounting holes.
At this point, the procedures for installing locks for a sliding wardrobe can be considered complete.
Be sure to read the manufacturer's instructions first. Different systems may use special installation schemes that differ from competitors. That is, there are virtually no universal instructions for any type of furniture locking mechanism.

Differences in installation method
In addition to the different design of locks for sliding doors, these accessories also differ in the installation method. There are overhead and mortise products.
Overlays are installed directly on the surface of the door leaf. Basically these are electrical systems. They are not very popular because they do not allow the door to be opened completely. They are not recessed into the canvas. Among the advantages is simple installation, but not for residential premises, where every element of the interior is carefully verified and thought out.
Mortise locks are considered more preferable for sliding and interior doors. Installation of such mechanisms is carried out directly into the internal cavity of the canvas. The mechanism is designed and created to fit completely inside the door. This arrangement of the accessory does not affect the operation of the opening mechanism, and also does not spoil the design and interior.
Electromagnetic padlock.
As for the installation process, it is more complex than the installation work of installing rim locks for a sliding door.
Also, these accessories also differ in the place where they need to be installed. Thus, models are offered for ordinary side installation - this is an excellent solution that is ideal for most sliding panels. Modern manufacturers also offer floor-standing models.
Cost and services
Prices depend on the volume of work performed and the type of mechanism being installed. We will not only install mechanical locks, but also install magnetic, electromechanical, and electromagnetic equipment. We carry out installation and dismantling of mounted or mortise mechanisms.
For apartment buildings, we have a proposal for installing a combination lock or intercoms in Moscow and the region.
When contacting the service department you receive the following:
- Installation of door locks of any type (overhead or mortise);
- Emergency opening of entrance doors;
- Replacing the cylinder or recoding electronic mechanisms.
A particularly relevant proposal is the recoding of security systems for entrance doors. Brands such as: Mottura, Cisa, Mul-t-lock, Atra, Dierre, Securemma, Abloy, Evva and other protective The mechanisms have the ability to reprogram the lock. If you have lost your keys, it will be much more profitable to order a replacement or reprogramming than a complete replacement of the security mechanism.
How to choose the right lock
When choosing a lock for a sliding door, you need to pay attention to some important points.
So, the material from which the door leaf is made is important. If the sliding structure is made of natural wood, then the choice will be very, very wide. Any type of lock can be installed on a canvas made of natural wood, be it mechanical, electrical, mortise or overhead. If the canvas is made of glass, then the choice is narrowed down to overhead mechanical or electrical systems. Professionals recommend using electric mechanisms for glass doors.
Locking mechanism for glass door.
The design of locks for sliding doors is not the last thing when choosing. Thus, interior design experts do not recommend choosing products that do not fit into the overall design concept of the room. Even if it is a functional, reliable and high-quality product, but it stands out, it is better to purchase something more suitable.
If the interior is built using smoother lines, then the choice of lock for sliding doors should be between mortise or floor models.
If the design contains more extravagant elements and the design features of the canvas allow, then you can choose overhead models that can stand out, but at the same time will be in harmony.
Even when selecting a suitable locking mechanism, there is such an important factor as the ability to open the door. A sliding door, which must open completely, is equipped only with mortise mechanisms - they will not interfere with the opening and closing process. If for some reason the door does not close completely, then you can choose from overhead locks for sliding doors.
Causes of the problem and recommendations for elimination
The complexities of the locking mechanism of modern furniture can cause many problems that arise for various reasons; they do not always depend on careful operation:
the key may break;
the lock easily fails;
the keyhole becomes clogged;
parts of the locking mechanism wear out.
Regardless of the cause of the breakdown, it would be appropriate to involve specialists who provide a guarantee for such work. Emergency opening is performed by workers with many years of experience using special tools that eliminate the possibility of damage.
DIY lock installation
Speaking about the features of choice, it is necessary to talk about installation. If everything is clear with overhead structures, then in the installation of mortise lock models for sliding doors, despite the apparent simplicity, small nuances may arise.
For installation work you need to stock up on a set of tools:
- Power tools – hand router, drill, screwdriver;
- Hammers and chisels;
- Measuring tool;
- Spanners.
The first thing to do is markup. At this stage, it is necessary to determine which side the lock should be on and at what height it should be. In the case of a lock for a sliding door, the optimal height is 90-95 cm. The location is marked with a pencil, and it is necessary to move 5 cm away from the edge of the door.
Then a groove is cut in the end part at the height of the mark. It is designed to install a side bar. For its manufacture, a 16 mm milling cutter is used.
After this, using a drill with a thick drill bit, the recesses are drilled. This is done to ensure that the sliding door locking mechanisms fit into the groove. The recess should then be finished using chisels and a hammer.
Next, they take measurements of the lock body and determine the places where the handles will be. Holes are also drilled for handles. Then the accessory is inserted, holes are drilled in the fastening points and screwed in with self-tapping screws.
The same actions must then be carried out with the door frame or the second leaf in order to install the second part of the lock for sliding doors.

Furniture lock installation diagram
Furniture lock cutout for doors or drawer fronts. The length of the lock cylinder (Z) must be no less than the thickness of the embedded element. The size of the lock tongue (C) should not exceed the size of the shackle (e). To install the bracket, select self-tapping screws with a small head. Adjust doors and drawers before installing the lock, set the same distances with the furniture body.
Tools for marking and inserting a lock
To mark, we use a tape measure, a measuring angle, a ruler, and an awl for marking. A caliper may also come in handy if you have one in the house. A cordless screwdriver is the most convenient tool for inserting locks and tightening screws; you can use an electric drill and hand screwdrivers. The feather drill must match the diameter of the lock cylinder (X). It is advisable, but not necessary, to initially make a path for the feather drill using a small 2-3 mm drill.
Making the markings
Decide on the installation location of the lock; the lock mechanism should not fall on the handle mounts. When closing the lock, the latch moves evenly beyond the bracket.
What should you pay attention to? How the door is positioned relative to the body.
The size for the cutout in the internal door should be as in the example E + A + 2 mm from the edge of the door, subject to minimum clearances between the door and the body. The bracket is installed deep in the body along the thickness of the door (g).
interior door
The outer door stands on an overlay, covering the ends in the furniture body. The bracket is attached to the edge of the inner panel. The edge of the door should match the edge of the outer casing.
external door
We cut into the lock
We make a mark on the front side of the door. Use a small drill to drill a through hole. Using a feather drill, we make a small recess on the inside of the door along the through hole and drill through it with the front one. We insert the lock, apply a decorative ring and fix the lock block with self-tapping screws.

Assortment of locks for sliding doors
Doors can be metal, wood or even glass - it all depends on the personal preferences of the owner of the room, as well as on the overall design and design of the room.
Regardless of the material from which it is made, the model needs a locking mechanism (especially if it is an entrance). This element, intended only for sliding doors, differs significantly from similar devices that cut into ordinary doors.
To begin with, it should be noted that there are several classifications of locks.
They may differ in the following ways:
- principle of operation;
- installation method;
- location on the door leaf.
If we talk about the principle of operation of locks, there are several options.
- Mechanical. Such devices are closed and opened using a special latch using a key. It should be noted that these designs are widespread and quite popular due to their affordable price.
- Magnetic. The base in this model is a magnet. The main disadvantage of this option is the fact that it works exclusively in the presence of electricity (the fact is that the magnet begins to work only under the influence of electric current). Accordingly, if the power is turned off, you will not be able to open or close the door.
These devices are quite expensive.
Let's move on to a discussion of types of locks that differ in installation method.
- Invoices. Such mechanisms are installed on the surface of the door, as if overlapping (hence the name). These models are divided into mechanical and magnetic.
- Mortise. This type is considered more suitable for installation on sliding doors. The process of attaching them to the door is more complex and time-consuming, however, in the end you will get a safer and more reliable lock.
As for the location on the door leaf, the locks can be:
- lateral (standard);
- lower (floor).
Forethought as a reliable method of getting rid of unforeseen problems
In this article, we have presented the most effective ways to open a mailbox without a key without breaking the lock. They are suitable for standard locks. In the case where a modern new lock was installed on the box, it is almost impossible to open it using the above methods.
If you are just waiting for correspondence that interests you, you can wait for the postman. They usually go in the morning or evening. You can also leave a note on the mailbox asking you to drop mail into your neighbors' box if you have previously agreed with them about the possibility of using their box.
To completely avoid such problems and not look for ways to open a mailbox lock , it is recommended to store a spare key or a duplicate of the original in a desk drawer or closet. This way, even if you lose the main key, you will always have another one that can be replicated later.

How to choose?
When choosing a lock for sliding doors, you must take into account the material from which the door is made. Thus, wooden fences are considered the most versatile - almost any lock can be installed on them. You need to be most careful with a glass door - they usually choose overhead magnetic locks.
You should keep in mind the overall design and interior design of the room. Locks should not play the role of accent elements; on the contrary, they must be made as inconspicuous as possible and “fit” into the interior as best as possible.
You need to pay attention to the comfort of opening doors.
To make this process as convenient as possible, mortise devices are usually chosen for sliding doors.
Closer for sliding system
This is a whole system that includes stoppers, limiters, latches and other elements so that the doors automatically close smoothly and are comfortable to use. Every third model requires several closers at the same time due to the need to close the doors in different directions. Adapters that regulate the operation of the system are installed in the upper part of the cabinet, and the closer is installed in the upper part of the guide yard.
It is worth noting another significant role that is controlled by the automatic system - security. This device minimizes the likelihood of injury when closing the cabinet abruptly.
In addition to providing safety to the owners, the structure itself has an increased level of protection against loosening. This opportunity arises due to the shock-absorbing effect that is introduced into the automatic door closer systems.
To select an automatic closer system, you should pay attention to the following factors:
The installed systems are in demand and extremely popular due to the fact that they combine:
You can learn how to install a stopper with a shock absorber on a sliding wardrobe from the video.
Installation process
In fact, installing a lock on a sliding door is a fairly simple process that will not cause much difficulty even for beginners. The main thing is to follow the instructions.
Take a closer look at the process of installing a mortise and overlay device.
To install a mortise lock, you will need a tape measure, a marker (you can also use a pen or pencil), a drill, a screwdriver and a chisel.
So, before starting installation, you need to apply markings to the door leaf (in the place where you plan to install the lock).
Next, you will need to take a drill and a chisel, with which you need to make a niche in one of the two door panels.
Important! The size of the niche and the size of the lock must be identical.
After this, a hole should be made on the adjacent sash for the latch mechanism. Then you need to fix the blocks in the prepared holes.
To install an overhead device, you will need the same tools as for installing a mortise device.
Similar to the description of the previous installation method, first of all you need to mark the place where the lock will be installed. Next, a niche is formed (only one - for the latch).
After this, you need to secure the structural blocks and use a drill to make holes for the bolts. Then you should proceed to installing the main unit.
Thus, we see that with the right approach to selection and a responsible attitude to the installation process, your sliding door can acquire a reliable lock that will protect the room from unwanted intrusions.
It should be noted that in order for the lock to serve for a long time without breakdowns, phenomena such as: uneven position of the door leaf and incorrect installation of the device should be avoided (follow the instructions carefully).

How to install it yourself
Installing a furniture lock will be quite feasible for most users. The greatest difficulty is the installation of a mortise structure. Procedure:
- The necessary tools are being prepared. You will need an electric drill, a Forstner drill or a pen drill (the first is better), a ruler, an awl, and a screwdriver.
- Marking is being done. Usually a diagram is attached to the lock, which is placed on the door and the centers of all holes are marked. If there is no diagram, you need to accurately determine the dimensions and mark the drilling points on the sash. They are marked with an awl to leave indentations for centering the tool.
- The necessary holes are made. As a rule, you need a through one for the mechanism and several blind ones for fasteners, although there may be other options.
- The lock is fixed, a decorative ring is put on the cylinder.
- Next, focusing on the position of the part, the installation location of the counter structure is noted. It is attached to a fixed part of a cabinet or table.
Advantages and disadvantages of furniture eccentric screeds
The last step will be to check the functionality of the product and adjust the response bracket, if necessary. As a rule, you need to slightly bend the corner to achieve the desired result. After this, the installation is considered complete, and normal operation of the lock begins.
Tools are being prepared
Marking is being done
Holes are drilled
The lock is fixed
A counter structure is being installed
How to install a sliding door with your own hands: step-by-step instructions, installation diagrams and drawings
This engineering solution allows you to partially eliminate the shortage of free space and quickly combine two adjacent rooms into one large one. In addition, the canvases, when installed correctly, do not creak, and the entire structure is much more durable than a traditional swing structure. The installation of compartment doors, regardless of their differences in size, number of leaves and a number of other parameters, is carried out according to the same algorithm, with only minor adjustments on individual points.
Preparatory activities
Taking measurements
This is easy to do if you have a tape measure on hand. For those who are settling into a “new building,” it is much easier. If the house is being renovated, then it should be taken into account that the installation of compartment doors will be much more complicated if the measurements are made inaccurately. And this is quite possible, since the openings must be trimmed.
First you need to dismantle not only the platbands, but also the box. After cleaning this section of the wall, its condition and the need for reinforcement are determined. At this stage, solutions may vary. For example, widen the opening, install a partition made of gypsum plasterboard (multi-layer plywood) instead of the dismantled part of the old one. This will help not only to take the correct measurements, but also to understand how to install the compartment door.
Most recommendations do not take into account that several installation options are possible, so the owner has a choice:
- two small sliding doors;
- one is fixed, the other is mobile;
- how the canvases will be joined - simply close together or overlap each other;
- a wide canvas that slides into the septum cavity. For example, from the same drywall.
Perhaps this is the whole difference in the methods of self-installation of sliding compartment doors. The principle of their functioning is identical - movement along the guides in one direction or another.
Material selection
Everyone has their own preferences in terms of aesthetics, design, and so on, but a number of installation features are worth noting.
Mounting options
Regardless of the sliding door system, installation methods can be:
- Sliding doors. Guides are fixed on the wall along which the canvas rolls.
Sliding doors. The guide is mounted on the wall above the correct opening
Cassette sliding interior door: the door is hidden in a wall niche
Cascading sliding doors: one leaf pulls the other
The simplest installation option is sliding doors. They can be installed independently, not only at the repair stage, but also after it. It is only important that the opening is smooth and the wall has normal load-bearing capacity. The disadvantage of such a system is that you cannot place anything close to the wall in the place where the door rolls back. There is one more thing: very low sound insulation. This is easy to explain: if you look from the end, there is a gap of several millimeters on the sides. It is necessary so that the canvas does not “shuffle” along the wall. And all sounds penetrate perfectly through it, becoming only a little quieter.
Cassette doors are good because when open, the door leaf is located in a niche in the wall and does not interfere. The second advantage is that seals can be installed around the perimeter of the opening, which provide much higher sound insulation performance. The disadvantage of installing a sliding door in a niche is that it can only be done at the renovation stage. The second drawback: to make a pencil case for sliding doors, they usually install a false wall, and this means stolen centimeters of space.
Cascade doors are one of the types of sliding doors. It simply has a larger number of guides: according to the number of movable door leaves. Installation is perhaps the most difficult: there are many parts and high installation accuracy is required. The systems belong to the elite category, and they rarely save on installation: repairs will cost more.
How to make a compartment door
Marking production
The instructions for installing sliding sashes are quite simple. The nuance is how to attach the guides. Here you will have to choose from several options. It has already been said that they can be fixed on the ceiling or wall. But how many of them do you need to install a door?
- One top. The convenience is obvious - there is no threshold, which makes it easier to clean the floor in the area of the opening. The downside is low strength. Constant dynamic loads (including drafts) gradually weaken the structure.
- Two (above and below). Installing interior compartment doors with your own hands using this method, despite some complexity and a larger number of components, is preferable. First of all, in terms of durability.
Fixing the guides
Given the increased loads, dowels + screws are mainly used. Although there are also special brackets on sale that make installation easier.
If the fastening is done on the ceiling, then it is necessary to make a small indentation from the wall so that the sash does not cling to it. The main thing at this stage is constant monitoring of the position of the guides. The slightest deviation from the horizontal will lead to problems with opening/closing the canvases.
Installation of carriages
They are dismountable, so the bracket is first disconnected and the roller mechanism is placed in the guide cavity.
Some modifications are first attached to the sash, and only then installed in the profile. The difference is not fundamental.
Canvas design
It is quite difficult to install all the fittings already on a suspended sash, and therefore this is done in advance. At the same time, the staples are also secured (with a detachable mechanism).
Staging the canvases
Each of them is raised, and the components of the carriage are fastened together. This work cannot be done alone, and you will need an assistant. The specifics of the connection depend on the design features of the roller mechanism, but everything is described in detail in the passport; It's impossible to make a mistake.
Opening design
Whether to install platbands, trims, or finish the edges differently is at the discretion of the owner. But it is advisable to cover the guides. Decorative strips are sold in a large assortment, and therefore, when purchasing fittings, it is easy to choose the best option for the interior of the room.
That's all the step-by-step instructions; nothing complicated.
Regardless of whether you own a small apartment or a spacious house, installing interior compartment doors is more than advisable. They will not only make any opening original, but will also bring a number of additional amenities. For example, if the process of moving the sashes is automated. And if you consider that installation is easy to do yourself, saving on specialists, using only household tools, this decision is quite logical and rational.
