How to assemble an accordion sofa: assembly diagram, instructions

Advantages and disadvantages of the design

The accordion design has its advantages and disadvantages, which should be taken into account before drawing up the diagram. After all, it may happen that the disadvantages turn out to be so significant that they reduce all the advantages to a minimum.

So, let's start with the advantages:

  • the most obvious thing is that it is a great space saver, because the sofa, which is small at first glance, hides as many as two sleeping places;
  • when unfolded, it has no seams or folds, which ensures complete rest, and the folded sofa is a cozy place for a hall or living room;
  • a variety of colors allows you to choose furniture to suit your taste, which will suit any interior;
  • easy to make with your own hands;
  • the presence of a drawer in which you can store linen or other things;
  • Lightning fast unfolding procedure.

There were some downsides:

  1. When unfolded, the sofa is not so compact, so in any case you will have to plan the placement of other pieces of furniture and other things so that there is empty space a few meters before the sofa.
  2. In order for the accordion to unfold easily, it requires a fairly wide and high back, which may seem uncomfortable to some.
  3. Since the design contains metal elements, over time they may begin to creak. This can spoil the operating experience and lead to additional lubrication costs.

Thus, despite the fact that this design has disadvantages, they are significantly fewer than the advantages. Whether such a sofa is right for you depends only on your needs and requests!

The accordion sofa easily folds and unfolds and does not take up much space, which is a big plus in a city apartment.

Criterias of choice

Before choosing a sofa with an accordion mechanism, you should decide on the desired parameters

Furniture stores have a huge selection of such designs, so it is important not to get confused and find a model that will combine all the necessary characteristics

When choosing a suitable sofa, experts recommend paying attention to the following:

  • quality of furniture;
  • type of construction;
  • color and style;
  • upholstery material;
  • dimensions when unfolded;
  • availability of additional functions.

First of all, it is necessary to inspect the wooden parts for unevenness, excessive moisture or an abundance of burrs. Metal elements must not have scratches or traces of rust. Also, high-quality upholstered furniture cannot creak or warp.

By design, sofas are divided into the following types:

  1. Standard – for seating two or three people. Such models are most often installed in the living rooms of small apartments.
  2. Corner - having a stationary side section. It allows you to accommodate the largest number of people.

The style of the sofa should be combined with the interior of the room in which the furniture is intended to be installed

It is important to pay attention not only to the color, but also to the upholstery material. Its wear resistance determines how many years later the sofa will have to be re-upholstered. The coating must be cleaned well, this is especially important if there are children or animals in the house.

For daily use, upholstery made of jacquard, chenille or tapestry is suitable. An excellent solution is Teflon impregnation, which gives the fabric water-repellent and dirt-resistant properties.

Velor and flock upholstery looks beautiful, but wears out quickly with regular use. As for leather, of course, natural material has the maximum wear resistance, but it is not suitable for daily sleep. Leatherette is worse in strength - with frequent use it quickly wears out and cracks.

Sofa models have different sizes, so you should measure in advance the place where you plan to fit the structure. Future furniture should unfold freely without touching anything. The size ranges of the structure are: width – 70-100 cm, length – 165-200 cm.

If desired, you can purchase furniture with additional equipment: armrests, linen drawer. Some sofas have built-in niches in the side elements, which are used to store books or decorative items. Such designs allow you to save on bookshelves. With daily use of upholstered furniture for sleeping, a built-in box on wheels will become relevant.

The accordion type transformation is one of the most popular among consumers. The sofa is suitable for a variety of rooms: living room, bedroom, office or children's room. You just need to choose the right model that fits perfectly into the room in size and style.

Sofa design is important

Sketching and drawings

The drawings and diagrams necessary to make an accordion sofa with your own hands can be found on the Internet, you can substitute the required dimensions, taking into account the free space in the room, the desired length and width of the bed. But first you need to decide on the design.

The soft part can rest on a metal frame with lamellas made from a round or rectangular pipe or on a carpentry frame made of timber and fiberboard. To make a metal frame yourself, you will need metal pipes, high-quality lamellas, lath holders for attaching wooden lamellas to the frame, and other fasteners, a pipe bender, and welding.

To absorb the load, it is important to correctly calculate the step of fastening the lamellas. Working with carpentry is much easier.

This article describes in detail how to make a sofa with an accordion transformation mechanism on a wooden frame, consisting of the following parts:

  • soft part of 3 sections - rear back, front back and seat;
  • 2 soft straight armrests;
  • a stiffener connecting the sidewalls at the rear;
  • bottom drawer on wheels;
  • guide for rolling out the drawer.

You can implement your project. When drawing a diagram or sketch, you need to think through the following points:

  • the armrests will be hard or soft, straight or complex in shape;
  • will the unfolded sofa have a high back-headboard, or just a stiffening rib connecting the armrests;
  • Will there be a box under the seat?

Furniture accordion options

To assemble a sofa with your own hands, you first need to choose a scheme that will most accurately meet all the requirements. Today the following options are offered:

  1. Jasmine. The design includes a metal frame and compartments for storing pillows and bed linen. Covers and mattresses can be easily removed, armrests can change position, acting as a small comfortable table or a convenient support for pillows.
  2. Astra is a lightweight design that, after unfolding, easily turns into a spacious bed. When folded, it is a compact, comfortable sofa for which armrests may not be used. An example of assembly and disassembly can be seen in Fig. 2.
  3. Lydia is a standard accordion, which is made of chipboard, it can have different sizes, is easy to assemble with your own hands, and fits perfectly into even the smallest space. This is the option that is most often preferred when you need to assemble a sofa for a living room or guest room. The back for such a design may not be used as a separate element. The folding part consists of 3 elements, the top two form a comfortable low back, and the third is a seat.

Advantages and disadvantages

The accordion folding sofa is a comfortable and compact design that can be easily assembled yourself. Among the advantages it should be noted:

  1. The reliability of the design is high, the sofa has a simple assembly diagram. The mechanism is durable, the service life of the sofa is not limited. If necessary, it can be retightened; repairs to the folding mechanism will not be required for many years.
  2. Easy, extremely simple transformation. To unfold the sofa for sleeping, you need to pull the loop located in front. After this, the mattress will move forward and take a flat position, turning the structure into a bed.
  3. The sofa can be placed anywhere, its dimensions are compact. The main thing is to choose the appropriate dimensions and consider whether there is enough space for it when fully unfolded.
  4. If necessary, this piece of furniture can be easily repaired; usually, the fabric is reupholstered or the soft padding on the side parts is replaced. The mechanism itself is simple and durable, there is almost nothing to break here. The guides or wheels for the sliding part may require replacement, but changing them is not difficult. Some manufacturers provide a convenient box for storing linen, pillows, and blankets. This will save space in your closets.

Assembly requires a simple circuit and materials that are not that expensive. The components of the accordion are shown in Fig. 1.

For assembly you need to prepare the following:

  • chipboard panels;
  • textiles for upholstery;
  • foam;
  • a 3-piece mattress (it can be ordered at any furniture factory);
  • fastening elements (screws, nails, staples);
  • guides for the retractable part;
  • wheels for the retractable part;
  • legs for the main part.

Materials, accessories, tools

To make a sofa you will need:

  • for armrests - timber with a section of 25x50 mm, plywood 10 mm or chipboard 25 mm for the frame, fiberboard (hardboard) for the sides;
  • timber and fiberboard for the frame of the soft part;
  • boards for the frame of the box, fiberboard for the bottom, plywood for the facade;
  • plywood or chipboard for stiffeners;
  • guide boards;
  • foam;
  • furniture fabric, leatherette can be used for the sides;
  • transformation mechanism, support hinges, wheel supports;
  • self-tapping screws, bolts and nuts, furniture or universal glue.

When ordering a transformation mechanism, you need to pay attention to its purpose:

  • for installation on a metal frame;
  • for installation on a wooden frame;
  • universal.

The height of the transformation mechanism must correspond to the thickness of the mattress; an unsuccessfully selected mechanism will protrude above the plane of the sleeping place.

The tools you will need are a tape measure, a ruler, a pencil, a screwdriver and/or drill, a hammer, a stapler with staples, and scissors. If furniture covers will be stretched over the soft part, you will need a sewing machine.

How to disassemble?

The folding sofa is quite easy to disassemble.

  • Before you start disassembling the structure, you need to take a flat-head screwdriver and the same keys (10, 12, 13 and 14). If you plan to move or move furniture to another location, you will need bags, protective film or packing tape.
  • First, you will need to carefully move the product away from the wall . Next you need to remove the covers. Using keys, you need to unscrew the screws that connect the sides and the part that is located at the back.
  • The head of the furniture is detached - it must be removed from the grooves by rolling out the frame base on the box.
  • The seat will need to be raised. Next, unscrew all the existing fasteners and clamps in the structure, remove the storage boxes for bedding.
  • When a product with an “accordion” system has been disassembled, it must be packed, especially if the furniture is to be transported further.

If there is a need for proper packaging of disassembled furniture, then this action plan should be followed.

  • The armrests and storage box, folding mechanism and mattress must be carefully wrapped in film.
  • When wrapping all the components of upholstered furniture, it is important that they all lie separately. It is not recommended to wrap several parts of the accordion sofa at once with film.
  • Place all bolts and fasteners in a separate bag.

Armrests

The easiest way to make armrests is rectangular in shape; they can be made quite wide. The armrests are completely symmetrical and differ only in the direction of the bolt for assembling the elements. Sequence of work:

  1. Assembling a frame from 4 strips of plywood (top, bottom, front, back walls) and 7 vertical beams, the 7th beam is installed closer to the rear wall of the frame, a hole is drilled in it for a bolt. The bolt is immediately installed in place and fixed from the head side.
  2. Covering the frame with foam rubber (allowance at the edges of 0.5 cm).
  3. Covered with fabric (allowance of at least 5 cm, for a model with drawstrings more).
  4. Manufacturing, pasting with foam rubber, covering the sidewalls from fiberboard (a hole for the bolt is immediately drilled in the inner sidewall).
  5. Installing the side panels into the body, fixing them with self-tapping screws in the corners.

If tightening is being done, it is convenient to cut holes in the foam rubber using a joker pipe with a pointed edge. Instead of furniture buttons, you can use footrests on a nail, covering them with fabric. The prepared bearings are driven into the holes with a mallet, the fabric in the tightening areas is pre-fixed to the plywood with a stapler.

Soft part

  1. Using self-tapping screws, a timber frame is assembled (frame and 2-3 transverse stiffeners).
  2. The frame is covered with fiberboard on top.
  3. Holes for bolts are made in the lower part of the rear backrest; in these places, the beam must be reinforced with plywood overlays 5-10 mm thick.
  4. The frames of the rear and front backrests are laid side by side. The bars, which are in contact, are screwed with self-tapping screws from the inside of the frame closer to the corners. The bars are marked and drilled for mounting holes for the hinges that will fasten the backs together.
  5. The fiberboard is covered with foam rubber 8-10 mm thick, density 22. You can glue foam rubber of a smaller thickness in several layers.
  6. On the sides of the front backrest and seat, holes are marked and drilled for the transformation mechanism.
  7. Frames covered with foam rubber are covered with a stapler using padding polyester or batting, upholstery fabric, or furniture covers are sewn and stretched over the soft part.

A little about book sofas

This is perhaps the most familiar version of the sofa to many, which could be seen back in Soviet times in almost every apartment. When folded, it takes up very little space and is usually placed along the wall, and when unfolded, it turns into a comfortable and cozy place to sleep, where two people can sleep at once. At the bottom of the sofa there is usually a convenient and spacious drawer for linen, and bedding can be put away in it for the day when they are not needed, as well as storing various things there. During the day, the sofa can not be folded out and can be used as a place for one person to rest - its length is quite enough to sit comfortably and stretch out your legs.

This design has a number of advantages

This sofa design has many advantages:

  • easy to assemble and disassemble;
  • small size;
  • durable option;
  • you can buy covers and capes and preserve the upholstery, protecting it from dirt;
  • has a drawer for linen;
  • comfortable for sleeping;
  • It's inexpensive.

How to choose the right sofa book?

But this version of the sofa is not without its drawbacks. You also need to know them in order to make the right choice. Disadvantages of book sofas:

  • the structure needs to be moved somewhat away from the wall in order to unfold it;
  • a weak person or child may not be able to handle unfolding - it may be too difficult. But a lot depends on the model;
  • frame parts can be felt in the middle of the bed;
  • the transformation mechanism must be regularly lubricated with oil so that it does not creak and functions correctly;
  • There are poorly made models whose transformation mechanism quickly fails.

Give preference to quality models

Frame replacement

Repair of sofa parts.

Repairing an accordion sofa involves installing a new frame and transformation mechanism. Initially, the 2nd element is dismantled. The components must be lubricated with machine oil. Springs that are overextended are shortened.

As for frame repair, this process involves replacing cracked or broken structural elements. Their parameters are preliminarily determined.

You can buy the product ready-made at a hardware store. Otherwise, the elements are made to order in a carpentry shop.

Parts are replaced, tightened and glued. When carrying out this process, it is recommended to pay special attention to the plywood located under the spring block.

If it is poorly fixed, then the plywood is secured with nails and glued with PVA. The dismantled elements are assembled.

Sofa repair involves replacing the spring unit. Springs come in 2 types:

  • old (with a height of 20 cm, a diameter of 15 cm and a thickness of 5 mm);
  • modern (with a height of 12 cm, a diameter of 10 cm and a thickness of 2.2 mm).

The latter system involves the use of spirals. To replace them, you will need to release the spiral lock from one end. The other end is unscrewed. The spring is released from both sides and replaced. The new spiral is installed.

If several damaged elements are detected in the spring block, then a new system will need to be installed.

Otherwise, the remaining spirals will begin to fail.

Box and small parts

Expert opinion

Kovalev Viktor Georgievich

The box frame is assembled from 4 boards; the boards are connected to each other using vertical bars, which are installed in the inner corners. The diagonals of the box are measured - they should be the same.

A stiffening rib is attached in the middle. The fiberboard bottom is secured with short self-tapping screws.

The front and rear rollers are screwed into the corners. Holes for the transformation mechanism are marked on the sides.

The front panel is covered with fabric and attached from the inside to the front wall of the drawer.

The 2 guide boards along which the rollers will ride are connected to each other by two transverse boards, the ends of which, after assembly, should reach the middle of the bottom of the armrest. The parallelism of the guides is checked by measuring the diagonals. The rear stiffener is covered with fabric.

Assembly

  1. The back and front backrests are pressed against each other and fastened with hinges, the hinges are fixed with self-tapping screws.
  2. The front backrest and seat are connected using a transformation mechanism, which is secured with bolts with a diameter of 10 mm.
  3. The assembled soft part is turned upside down, a box is placed on top, and a transformation mechanism is attached to its walls.
  4. The guide crossbars are attached with self-tapping screws to the bottom of the armrests.
  5. The sofa without armrests turns over, folds, rolls onto the guides with rollers, and the bolts protruding from the armrests are recessed into holes in the rear backrest.
  6. The stiffener is attached with self-tapping screws to the rear walls of the armrests.

When the sofa is folded down, the rectangular armrests do not cover the gap between the back and front back. Therefore, it is advisable to cut it out of plywood, cover it with fabric, and attach triangles to the back back with corners that will close it.

Types of sofas

Before starting work, you need to decide which specific model you want to assemble. To do this, consider three main types:

  • jasmine - this model includes a metal frame, mattresses and a box for storing linen. The armrests can be folded out;

Astra is a simpler folding system. When folded, it becomes a compact sofa, and when transformed, it becomes a bed;

Lydia - she can be called the standard option. The backrest in this case should not fold out.

A sofa with an Accordion transformation mechanism takes up little space when folded, and when folded out it creates 2 full-sized sleeping places. The soft part of the accordion sofa consists of 3 sections; when folded, the top 2 form a backrest, and the bottom one forms a seat.

Factory-made sofas often use a metal frame; homemade furniture is usually made on the basis of a carpentry frame. Ready-made upholstered furniture is expensive; making an accordion sofa with your own hands will cost much less.

The most important component of the sofa is the transformation mechanism; it can be bought in an online furniture store along with support hinges and wheels.

Features of the accordion folding system

Accordion sofas are widespread and easy to find in stores. Of course, they are less popular than the same books, but, nevertheless, they are considered one of those that are quite easy to use and lay out. The transformation mechanism is very simple, and such a sofa can even be made independently from start to finish, because it does not use complex metal elements for unfolding, like the same popular book.

Modern classification of sofas

Mechanism for accordion sofa

So, the “accordion” folding or transformation system is the following mechanism: the sofa has three soft sections and unfolds according to the accordion principle. Its elements are connected to each other using special hinges firmly fixed to the frame. One of the sections is a seat, and the other two, when folded, form a backrest. That is, it turns out to be double. When unfolding, you need to move the seat forward, the first part of the back will follow it, then the second. Thus, the sofa will turn into a spacious place to sleep. The bed will not have any bends or changes; it will be smooth and comfortable. Of course, these conditions are met only when using high-quality furniture models.

The folding sofa with a roll-out mechanism is easy to use, it is very reliable and can be used daily

Folding the sofa is also not difficult - just return all sections to their original position. Previously, accordion sofas were quite heavy and bulky, but modern models are easy to fold and unfold. And now even a physically weakly developed person or child can cope with this task.

Typically, the frame of such a sofa is made of metal, since this material is fully capable of ensuring a long service life of the product, its reliability and strength. The bed itself will have a wooden frame (for example, slats), which is fixed to a metal frame.

Tools and materials

Before you begin assembling a sofa with an accordion mechanism, you need to prepare all the necessary materials and equipment. Relevant drawings and sketches will also be helpful. There are a great many of the latter in the public domain.

You just need to set your own dimensional parameters, which will depend on the square footage of your home and the area allocated for the sofa.

Tools that will be useful:

  • screwdriver;
  • key for 10, 12, 13, 14;
  • good screwdriver;
  • drill;
  • pencil and ruler;
  • roulette;
  • scissors and hammer;
  • special staples.

To make suitable covers, it is advisable to stock up on a sewing machine.

The following materials will also be useful:

  • chipboard or plywood for armrests;
  • plywood for the façade;
  • Fiberboard or timber for the frame part;
  • boards for an additional drawer and fiberboard for the bottom;
  • filler;
  • plywood or fiberboard for stiffeners;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • guide boards;
  • folding mechanism;
  • bolts and nuts;
  • covering (leather or fabric);
  • universal or furniture adhesive composition;
  • support parts for wheels and hinges.

The supporting base for the mattress can be a frame part with slats. This structure can be wooden, wood-shavings or metal. The most difficult thing to work with is metal structures, especially if an inexperienced user gets down to business.

Most home craftsmen choose pliable wood to prepare the base. The structure with a wooden frame base will be assembled from the following components:

  • a mattress with 3 components - the front and rear halves of the backrest, seats;
  • 2 sidewalls;
  • stiffening ribs (they hold the sidewalls together behind);
  • a box in which bed linen and other things will be stored;
  • wheels;
  • guides, thanks to which the structure will move forward.

Folding methods

Sofas differ from each other in different ways of folding out.

Book

The simplest and most reliable folding mechanism is considered to be an ordinary book. This sofa unfolds quite simply.

Tango

Tango sofas are considered one of the most modern models, which differ from other products in comfort and practicality. They are made from high quality timber. Tangos are very roomy; one such sofa can accommodate 3-4 people.

Eurobook

The Eurobook is considered a reliable and simple mechanism for folding furniture. To fold such a product, you will have to pull out the front part of the sofa, lower the back and pull it slightly towards you. The result is a double sofa.

Dolphin

The furniture, which is usually installed in the corner, has a dolphin folding mechanism. To unfold it, you need to take out an additional part from under the main seat and put a large soft pillow on it.

Pantograph

Such structures are installed in one of the corners of large bedrooms or living rooms. The design features of pantographs allow you to store a lot of clothes and even household items in them. The advantages of furniture include the fact that it is easy to unfold and fold.

French folding bed

Some furniture uses a French clamshell mechanism. For such products, a hidden mattress is installed under the seat, which, when unfolded, slides out. The French folding bed is used in both corner and straight models.

Roll-out

Roll-out beds are often installed in compact spaces to save space. Such products have a spacious niche in which there is an additional mattress. Roll-out furniture is universal and suitable for any room.

Accordion

Another common mechanism used in sofas is the accordion. To decompose such a structure, you must perform the following steps:

  • raise the bed;
  • pull the seat towards you.

Spartacus

Some apartments are not very large and therefore cannot accommodate large beds. It is better to install compact products with the Spartak mechanism in them. When assembled, this sofa is very compact, but if you disassemble it, it will take up twice as much space.

Conrad, or the telescope

This folding system consists of three main parts, which are located under the front seat. When unfolding, the lower part of the structure is pulled forward and pulled towards itself. The backrest is placed in the resulting niche.

Sedaflex

The design looks like a regular folding bed. The sedaflex mattress is mounted on a special suspension, which is made of elastic straps and stitching. During the unfolding process, it is necessary to pull the section forward from the niche and place it on the legs.

Elf

Such products meet all the requirements for a sofa. The frame is made of reinforced metal pipes and slats. The sofa also has several large drawers specifically for storing linen and other things.

Foldable to the floor

To transform this compact sofa into a large bed for sleeping, you will have to pull the special belt, which is located on the front wall of the seat. Then the blocks are taken out and the mattress taken from the seat is placed on them.

Step-by-step instruction

Having prepared all the required materials and tools, you can assemble a very comfortable accordion sofa. The main thing is to strictly adhere to the assembly scheme for such furniture in order to avoid mistakes. Let's look step by step at how to assemble a product correctly using a factory design as an example.

  • The purchased accordion sofa is delivered from the warehouse disassembled. The frame, mechanism and mattress come separately. All components must be properly prepared for assembly, removing all packaging material.
  • The frame base needs to be expanded. The mattress must be carefully laid on top of the frame base. It should have special Velcro strips that will secure it well on the prepared surface.
  • The mattress must be secured with tapes in areas where there are bends that appear when the sofa goes into the folded state . It is especially important to properly secure the soft component, so it is best to use all the ribbons that come with the kit.
  • Next comes preparation for installing the sides of the furniture. First, you will need to remove all components from the frame base for installing and adjusting the armrests. Next, you need to remove all the accessories from the packaging and take a 10 key.
  • In pre-placed marks on the sidewalls, “conscientiously” place the holders in the dedicated grooves that are provided in the transforming system.
  • Factory armrests usually have special plastic fasteners. They are necessary for good fixation of elements to the back of the sofa.
  • The structure must be moved to a position in which the master will be able to reach the special control part. It is located between the sleeping block and the sidewall.
  • The “lamb” must be tightened all the way . Then the product with the “accordion” system can be safely used.

Following this pattern, you can make such a piece of furniture yourself. To do this, you will need to stock up on all the materials listed above. From these you will need to make all the details of the furniture structure, and then assemble it.

How to transport a sofa? — Dommino furniture store

Moving to a new place is always full of troubles and worries. One of the most important questions that very often arises in this situation is how to transport upholstered furniture? Or more precisely, how to disassemble a sofa for transportation?

Transportation of any upholstered furniture is carried out using two methods:

  • disassemble everything before loading;
  • transport without disassembling into individual elements.

Let's take a closer look at each of these methods.

We transport the sofa disassembled

This option requires careful preparation. Before you begin, carefully study the assembly diagram so as not to accidentally damage any part.

A standard sofa consists of such parts as a side frame, a frame with a seat, armrests, a back frame, pillows and a front drawer.

Pack each part securely, paying special attention to small items and their quantity, otherwise losing even one of them could create problems for you during assembly.

Possible problems

Many people who decide to independently assemble upholstered furniture with an accordion mechanism encounter certain problems during the work. Moreover, this applies to both factory-made and home-made furniture structures.

A home master, especially if he does not have sufficient experience, may encounter some shortcomings.

  • It may seem that the furniture structure is not assembled well . This problem most often occurs in cases where the user neglected to study the instructions for assembling a factory product. The accompanying documentation and manual may contain many nuances and features of this process, without knowing which it will not be possible to assemble the sofa properly. That is why it is imperative to study the instructions with all the diagrams that come with the purchased furniture.
  • Often people who make such structures on their own try to make more spacious drawers for storing linen. You shouldn’t do this, because usually, due to the nature of the “accordion” mechanism, the storage compartments are made very small.
  • One of the main mistakes a home craftsman makes when assembling such furniture is haste . The accordion sofa must be assembled calmly and without rushing. It is not recommended to make too sudden movements. It is important to be careful so that no part of the furniture structure is damaged.
  • In rare cases, furniture fittings suffer during assembly. In such a situation, there is nothing left to do but go to the store and buy new suitable items.

Useful tips

You should assemble the sofa accordion yourself, armed with some useful tips.

  • If you cannot unfold or fold the sofa, this will mean that it was assembled incorrectly - you will have to “work on the mistakes.”
  • It is better to assemble such furniture with an assistant. This way the work will go faster and easier.
  • Don’t try to assemble furniture with an “accordion” mechanism yourself if you don’t understand anything about it - call a specialist so as not to accidentally damage the sofa.
  • For assembly, use only high-quality and reliable tools that will not fail at a crucial moment.
  • If you make furniture yourself from wood, do not forget to coat it with antiseptic compounds before starting all work.

Video instructions for assembling the sofa are given below.

Features of the transformation mechanism

According to the principle of operation of the mechanism, a folding sofa accordion can be compared to stretching a button accordion or accordion. Its design has three blocks, which consist of a metal or wooden frame. It is filled with wooden armor, located at a distance from each other.

The sleeping area consists of two blocks. The armor in them has a maximum distance in relation to each other. The third frame serves as a seat. At the same time, it makes the seating area longer when the sofa is folded out. This part of the furniture receives a lot of load, so the battens are placed as close as possible here.

When folded, the two main blocks fit tightly against each other, forming a backrest. They are perpendicular to the seat. To quickly unfold the accordion sofa, you need to pull out the seat. It will pull the entire structure along with it. When folded, the sofa does not take up much space and looks miniature.

The accordion mechanism can be found in the following versions:

  1. Straight sofa. Has 3 seats and 2 beds. Suitable for rooms with a small area. Folds forward.
  2. Chair-bed. Takes up little space, intended for one person. Used as a permanent or temporary place to sleep.
  3. Corner sofa. When unfolded, it has a large sleeping area due to the design, which consists of straight and stationary blocks. Most suitable for spacious living rooms.

How to unfold a sofa with an accordion mechanism: first you need to slightly raise the seat until you hear a click, which indicates the safety lock is locked. Next, the seat is pulled with force towards itself until the blocks create a flat surface.

Folding the accordion sofa is also easy. To do this, you need to do the steps in reverse order:

  1. The seat slides into place. This causes the berth to rise up and become a backrest.
  2. The lower block is raised slightly until a click is heard. After this, the sofa will be completely folded.

With a correctly assembled structure, the process is very quick and easy. If the sofa accordion does not unfold or fold, this indicates that the product was assembled incorrectly.

Sofas that are not suitable for every day

Some sofas are called “guest” sofas, since they are not suitable for daily relaxation; their sleeping place is only suitable for spending a few nights on it.

"French folding bed"

In the French folding sofa, the seating area is provided with removable pillows. Under them is a mattress folded like an accordion, which unfolds on metal legs like a folding bed. Such furniture has a compact body, which is good for small apartments, but it is inconvenient to sleep on it all the time: the mattress must be folded 3 times for assembly, so it is made thin. In addition, the system itself is not very reliable and durable, and with daily use it will not last long will last.

The “French folding bed” allows you to get a spacious sleeping area, but it is difficult to unfold and is not considered durable

"Sedaflex"

"Sedaflex" is a modification of the "French folding bed", the difference between this mechanism is the strength of the structure - the mattress unfolds on strong supports. The sleeping place turns out to be quite spacious, but it’s hardly very comfortable - numerous transverse joints with seams are usually felt during sleep, such a sofa is usually covered with an additional mattress. There will also be no compartment for linen in such a sofa.

"Elf"

The “elf” mechanism allows you to adjust the position of the armrests. That is, they can be completely lowered and get a single bed, or you can organize a comfortable place to relax while reclining. Such a sofa does not take up much space and can be easily transformed, but sleeping on it every day is not the best idea: the sleeping place is small, and the seat itself is a mattress for sleeping. This is an excellent option for a guest sofa that can be easily unfolded and organized for relaxation at night.

Sofa with fold-out floor

A sofa that folds out onto the floor is a compact and lightweight option for a place to relax. If necessary, simply raise the seat and pull out the double-folded mattress. This sofa has no supports, and the soft part lies directly on the floor. There are advantages to this: a compact furniture body, the absence of complex mechanisms that can fail, as well as low cost. This is a good option for accommodating guests, but sleeping on it regularly is very uncomfortable - there is no normal back support, you have to sleep practically on the floor, which is not the best option for a permanent basis.

"Recliner"

A recliner sofa is furniture with a lot of customization options. It is equipped with complex mechanisms that allow you to separately adjust the angles of the backrest and soft footrest, and most often the adjustments are made from a remote control. This option is not suitable for proper sleep. Yes, it looks solid and allows you to rest comfortably during the day, but it is impossible to transform it into a full-fledged sleeping place, not to mention the high cost.
