The mattress must strictly correspond to the size of the bed. A larger product will be unevenly distributed over the surface and will damage your posture. A mattress with smaller parameters will deform the frame and disrupt rest. The height of the flooring should be slightly higher than the level of the side of the bed. The sizes of springless models range from 15-24 cm. Thin floorings (2-10 cm) serve as mattress covers for old sofas. Products equipped with springs have a height of 18-32 cm. There are elite options reaching 50 cm.

It is important to take into account the individual characteristics of vacationers:

  • For those with an average build, a mattress with independent springs and a bed measuring 160x190 cm will suit them;
  • People who need more space will like the high springless mattresses, which are 180 cm wide;
  • Fragile consumers make do with soft double models 150-155 cm.

The sizes of single beds allow you to comfortably accommodate one person who prefers a lot of free space while sleeping. The width of a single bed ranges from 120 to 160 cm, while using the 160 cm model, even two people can comfortably fit on it.

The maximum dimensions of single beds correspond to the minimum dimensions of double beds, which makes the difference between them almost imperceptible.

Single

The standard length of a single bed is in no way inferior to larger products, and due to its small width and elongated shape, it easily fits into any room.

The sizes of a single bed, which are also called single or twin, are ideal for accommodating an adult of average build or a child.

King size

A king-size or queen-size bed has truly royal dimensions, which provide free accommodation for two or, if necessary, even three people.

These triple beds have a truly enormous width, exceeding 200 cm and are more appropriate for decorating spacious bedrooms, for example, for a family with a baby.

The photo shows a minimalist bedroom interior with a white king-size bed.

Anatomical features of sleeping people

The size of the sleeping place depends entirely on the build, health and age of the sleeping people. For patients suffering from pathologies of the musculoskeletal system (osteochondrosis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, etc.), it is better to buy the largest bed that can fit in the bedroom. The same applies to users with varying degrees of obesity. For healthy people of thin and average build, the bed is selected according to height and requirements for personal space. As a rule, these are models with a width of 160-180 cm and a length of 200-220 cm.

Custom sizes

Unusual beds are oval or round in shape, most often large in size. In this case, you can choose any sleeping position, even across.

For a children's room, the ideal option is a product with a diameter of 180 centimeters, and for a married couple, a sleeping place with a diameter of 250 cm.

Recommendations for interior design

When planning to choose a double bed yourself, you should take clear measurements of the room and additional furniture, transfer them to paper, and create a drawing. The GOST dimensions can be neglected if the width of the room exceeds 300 cm - the best option would be royal boxes of European and American standards. For a room that serves as a bedroom and living room at the same time, a folding sofa will be an alternative to a bed:

  • “Eurobook” with a standard sleeping area 200*160 cm;
  • "Accordion" size 160x185 cm;
  • “Click-clack” width 170, 190 or 200 cm;
  • "Aleko" up to 200-250 cm long;
  • "Saber" with a bed width of 160 cm.

For a comfortable stay, you should pay attention to the quality and size of bed linen. Euro sizes of bed linen are especially popular: for a bed with dimensions of 160*200 cm, a sheet of 220*240 cm and a duvet cover of 200*220 cm are suitable. A double bed with built-in shelves will save precious centimeters. Orthopedic models with a lifting mechanism corresponding to the parameters 183 * 223, headboard height 95 cm are widely in demand. For ease of reading, install the lamp at a height of 120 - 160 cm.

When calculating the space allocated for a sleeping bed, it is important to take into account the dimensions of additional elements. Sets that include a double bed with bedside tables and built-in shelves will simplify the choice of furniture; the finished set is made in the same style and takes up little space: 1690*2160 mm (bed dimensions) and 300*400 mm (bedside table).

Double furniture provides a comfortable resting position for married couples, overweight, sick and elderly people. Roomy models allow the use of an orthopedic mattress and pillows. It is convenient to complement modular products with compact cabinets, racks and shelves. However, in small rooms, a massive piece of furniture will take up maximum free space. Double products are difficult to choose for non-standard rooms, unusually shaped rooms, and elongated bedrooms.

A loft bed would be a good alternative for adults. The lowest height of the two-seater model is 1800 mm, and the highest is 1900 mm. Bunk furniture is a youth option for small apartments or dorms. The height of the second tier reaches 145-1800 cm. These parameters are not recommended for elderly people or people afraid of heights. You should also take into account the height of the ceilings of the apartment. With walls 240 cm and a bed 180 cm, 60 cm remains above the second tier. The design of such furniture can be as varied as possible. Often the sleeping area is complemented by a desk, linen closet or bookshelves.

Baby cots

When choosing the size of a crib, the most important criterion is the age of the child. The classification of length and width is represented by age limits:

AgeLength(cm)Width(cm)
Newborns (0-3 years)12060
Preschoolers (3-6 years old)14060
Schoolchildren (6-11 years old)16080
Teenagers (over 11 years old)18090

How to choose a bed size?

A few basic rules:

  • To make an informed choice, you should measure the area of the room, study the size chart, assortment, and features of bedding and mattress.
  • They also take into account a person’s physique, habits, weight, height, length of arms and legs, for example, it is necessary that the legs and elbows do not hang down or rest against the back, headboard or footboard.
  • The optimal size for two should be at least 140 cm, and the distance between sleepers should be approximately 20 centimeters.
  • According to Feng Shui, it is better to give preference to large, but not too bulky structures. For two people, you need to choose only a double bed, so as not to create a psychological and emotional imbalance in the couple, and vice versa, if a person sleeps alone, then a single model will be enough for him.
  • When choosing a comfortable length, you should add thirty or forty centimeters to the person’s height, this is especially important for those who often sleep on their backs.
  • The most convenient option in terms of size is a double design, which also replaces two separate beds and thereby frees up space.
  • In a narrow or small bedroom, it is advisable to install the model taking into account the ergonomics of the space. The length and width of the bed should be such that the passages are at least 60 cm.

Thanks to certain sizes, it is possible to choose the most comfortable model, which will provide an ideal, pleasant sleep and give the most comfortable feeling.

Design features of a round bed

The main feature of the design is its shape. In the standard version, the bed is a rectangular box. Its length is two meters, and the width differs in different models, from approximately 90 cm to two meters.

The components of a round bed themselves differ only in shape. It also installs such basic elements as a box, an orthopedic base, and a mattress. Additionally, you can complement the design with a headboard, sides and other elements.

Standard double bed size: which one to choose for your bedroom

Hello, dear friends! Despite the variety of design solutions, the use of transformation mechanisms and other elements, the dimensions of the bed are the basis of choice. Therefore, today we’ll talk about the standard size of a double bed, its features and possible design options.

If you are interested, in a separate article we will consider the issue related to the dimensions of single and one-and-a-half standard beds.

It is double designs that are most common. They are used in houses and apartments. However, the standard is not always the same for everyone.

Drawing of a double bed: what for

You can make a bed yourself, especially if you have experience in carpentry. Moreover, if you have a ready-made drawing, this is not so difficult.

Where can I get the drawing? If you are good at this, you can compose it yourself. But in general, today there are a large number of popular online services where you simply enter your data, dimensions, dimensions, etc., and the program creates a drawing for you.

Sofa bed: what types are there and which one to choose

  • Room area. You will be surprised, but you need to start with the available space inside the room where the furniture will be located. Alas, it is not always possible to use full beds here. Sometimes they are forced to be replaced with folding sofas;
  • User dimensions. This is the most important point. Moreover, dimensions also play a role in choosing the strength of the structure. But this is a separate topic;
  • Habits. Here I am talking about how a person is used to sleeping and behaving during sleep.

Let's discuss these questions in more detail.

First, start with the ratio of the bed to the area of the room. The bed should fit optimally in the available space.

Size and habits matter

Particular emphasis on this is placed by those whose bedroom is located in a small or even small room.

You can never choose beds by eye. Consider your own dimensions. For example, choosing a width of 160 or 180 cm, large people may not fit here. More precisely, they will not be particularly comfortable together. For tall people, 160x200 cm is sometimes not enough because their heels hang off the bed.

There is a category of people who are very active during everyday sleep. They constantly roll over, regularly change body position, and spread their arms and legs to the sides.

Individual habits play an important role, since a more spacious bed may be required, even if the dimensions of the users themselves are small. On the contrary, some large people often sleep cuddled together, use one blanket, and have no need for a very wide bed.

Many people argue about what to choose first - a mattress or a bed frame. Here I can give a definite answer.

The bed is always selected first, and the mattress underneath is selected.

It is worth considering that the GOST used by domestic and European furniture manufacturers differs from the American one, for example. That is, you won’t be able to take an American mattress for a Euro bed. As well as vice versa.

Manufacturing materials

In the manufacture of the frame, materials such as metal or wood are used. Each of them has its own advantages. The metal will be much stronger and will not deform when exposed to moisture. Wood, in turn, will look much nicer and make the room more comfortable.

For finishing, natural leather and its substitutes are used.

The bed frame itself can be painted or upholstery materials can be used. It can be fabric or leather, laminated chipboard or veneer. The last option will be the most budget-friendly, but also the most unreliable.

The main advantage is the ability to choose the right upholstery to suit any style.

You will also need an orthopedic base for the bed. It consists of slats that are secured to each other using several boards or metal strips. The base is necessary in order to place the mattress on it. Many people use old plywood or boards as it.

The slats can be made of wood.

This option is indeed possible, but it can negatively affect the quality of your sleep, since the orthopedic option is designed in such a way as to correctly distribute the load on your back during sleep.

The English International System of Measurements is actively used in the USA, directly in the UK itself, in Australia and some other countries. The metric system has become widespread among European furniture production.

This also includes furniture factories from Russia, Ukraine, and CIS countries. The overwhelming majority of offers on the domestic market belong to the metric system of measurements, which calculate dimensions in cm, that is, in centimeters.

Standard dimensions allow you to divide furniture into 4 main subcategories. They are:

  • single;
  • one and a half;
  • double;
  • children's

Such standards are used in almost all countries, but when using the same system, deviations and the use of individual proportions are still allowed.

The standard bed size used by furniture makers usually refers to the size of the mattress, not the furniture frame.

This significantly influences which mattress is preferable to choose for your bed. Carefully read the design information, take into account the external dimensions and internal dimensions where the mattress fits. Usually the frame is about 5-10 cm larger.

Modern manufacturers offer a wide variety of beds. Buyers are not limited in the choice of details such as material, design and type of base.

Many models are complemented by mechanisms that transform the bed into another piece of furniture. But the most important indicator when choosing a comfortable bed is its size.

To choose a comfortable and suitable bed, you need to navigate the standards, systems of measures and know how to choose the right sizes.

Examples of bedroom interior design with a round bed

You can find many examples of interior design for a room with a round bed. Today, many people prefer modern styles and solutions for renovation, and a round bed is one of the new and interesting solutions.

Design the room in the program before buying a round bed.

Its undeniable advantage is that it will suit any interior. The bed frame itself and its shape do not oblige you to adjust the renovation to it; on the contrary, the bed can be designed so that it fits into any style.

If you decide to create a bedroom design with a round bed, then you really have a sense of style and interesting ideas that you can bring to life.

How to navigate sizes

There are two measurement systems used to make beds. This is the English system of measures and metric. The second one is used by European manufacturers. The English system is used in Australia, the USA, Great Britain and some other countries.

These standards are used in many countries around the world, but even with the same measurement system they can deviate and differ from the main ones. By standard bed dimensions, we first of all mean the sizes of mattresses. The frames are always larger, on average 10 centimeters.

What you need to know about bed sizes

When buying new bedroom furniture, we look first of all at how it will fit in the room.

And we don’t always take into account the size of the place to sleep, although this is no less important. First, remember in what position you are most accustomed to going to bed.

Those who like to sleep on their stomach or back obviously need more space than those who like to sleep on their side with their palms under their cheeks. And one more thing: the older a person is, the more personal space he wants to have, including in his sleep.

Beds produced today differ in the country of manufacture. Therefore, there are two bed size systems:

  • The English system (including inches and feet) is used mainly by manufacturers from the USA.
  • The metric system (which is characterized by centimeters and meters) is used by manufacturers from Europe.

Children's beds

The size of a children's bed depends on the age of the child it is designed for. Standard models are divided into beds for children:

p, blockquote 39,0,0,0,0 —>

  • From 0 to 3 years
  • From 3 to 7 years
  • school age
  • adolescence
NameLengthWidth
For newborns (from 0 to 3 years)120 cm.60 cm.
For preschoolers (from 3 to 7 years old)140 cm.60 cm.
For schoolchildren (from 7 years old)160 cm.80 cm.
For teenagers180 cm.90 cm.

p, blockquote 40,0,0,0,0 —>

European beds for newborns differ from domestic ones by 5 cm - their dimensions are 125 x 65 cm.

There are many options for transformable beds that can be converted from children's to teenagers. In any case, when choosing a children's bed, you should give preference to models with a reserve. Children grow quickly and parents should understand this.

When is it time to change the bed?

Over the age of 18—before adulthood—a person, as a rule, “masters” at least three beds. First, a baby crib with high sides. The sides become lower as they grow older, then disappear completely.

Usually by the age of three the question of purchasing another bed is raised. Sometimes this can be a whole set of furniture designed to serve the child for the next ten years.

In adolescence, it's time for the next purchase. This is either a teenage bed of quite a “respectable” size, or a furniture set that is no longer of a “children’s” design

Let's consider the generally accepted gradation of this children's furniture by age and size.

What dimensions are considered standard?

Furniture manufacturers all over the world, including in Russia, adhere to established standards, even though they use different measurement systems (in centimeters or inches). The dimensions of the beds (width and length) are set taking into account the comfortable placement of people of average build and height no higher than 175 cm.

For domestic furniture factories, the standard size of a double bed cannot be less than 140 cm in width, the European scale starts from 160 cm, all subsequent parameters are the same. The dimensional step is 10 cm. The maximum width is 200 cm. The standard length is 200 cm.

People with other physiological parameters (heavy weight, tall height) or those who prefer more space for sleeping should study the sizes of double beds before purchasing.

Beds produced by factories in Australia, the USA and England have different dimensions. In English-speaking countries, Standard King, Eastern King and King labels are used. Standard “royal” inches when converted to the metric system will look like this:

  • minimum width – 183 cm (made in Australia and Great Britain);
  • maximum width – 213 cm (made in the USA);
  • length – 198 cm (UK) or 203 cm (Australia and USA).

The cost of the product will depend on the country of production, the material and design solutions, and the width. If you consider that the bed should last for many years, then you should opt for a high-quality wide model.

Optimal width

Statistics show that beds with a standard width of 160 cm are in greatest demand among married couples. But choosing a bed for two based only on consumer demand data is not entirely the right decision. The width of the bed can be larger or smaller if you take into account several important points when choosing.

First you need to decide on the location. In a small bedroom, a wide bed will clutter the space and look awkward.

If every centimeter counts in a small apartment, then you can install a double bed that is a few centimeters wider, but still gain space for a closet or a home mini-office.

An unusually large one requires a spacious bedroom and subtle design taste in order to create a cozy atmosphere and prevent disruption of the style of the room. You may also have difficulty finding the right size mattress and bedding.

Some furniture stores allow this “trying on” to be done right in the store. If this is not possible, you need to prepare in advance by taking measurements at home.

Larger people also need more space to sleep, but there should be space left for the person sleeping next to them. Therefore, a 190 cm mattress may be the optimal choice.

Length selection

A person will sleep comfortably and comfortably if he is placed on the bed with his legs straightened, and his heels do not hang down or rest against the backrest. The buyer should apply this “rule of comfort” when choosing mattresses for beds.

Expert opinion

Mikhailova Maria Vasilievna

Furniture store manager. Knows everything about comfort and interior design

Tall people may have a problem with choosing furniture for sleeping, because even “royal” parameters may be small for some. The largest (220 cm) are round and classically shaped bamboo beds.

If you cannot choose the appropriate length from the range of mass-produced furniture, then there is only one way out: to make an individual order. Many factories willingly “correct” the finished frames of their products chosen by a tall person.

However, the mattress will have to be ordered separately.

Select by height

Beds can be with or without legs, with drawers at the base or with a lifting mechanism, but there is no regulation on height. The size of the beds and the standard for this parameter are determined by the style of the interior. For Japanese or Moorish style, a low bed (20-30 cm) is suitable, and for American or country style – a high one (70 cm).

It should be remembered that the height of the bed is made up of the dimensions of the frame and mattress, so when purchasing, you need to think not only about how the furniture will fit into the interior, but also about the comfort of the people for whom it is intended. A bed that is too low will be difficult for a fat person and those of above average height to sit on, while a bed that is too high will cause inconvenience for older people.

Tips for choosing bed linen and bedspreads

These textiles should ideally fit a double bed of standard sizes or furniture of non-standard dimensions. For the latter, choosing textiles is quite difficult, but when it comes to standard designs, before purchasing you need:

  1. Make sure that the width of the bedspread is not less than the sleeping area (you choose the size of the sheet in the same way).
  2. Measure the seam allowance on each side; it should be 25–27 cm.
  3. Take into account the presence of furniture legs. If you want to hide them, the bedspread should be at least 60 cm larger than the standard bed dimensions.
  4. Decide where the furniture will stand - against the wall or in the center of the room. In the first case, there will be no allowance on one side.

Assortment of Italian double beds, the best manufacturers

The size of the blanket and bed linen is selected based on the length and width of the mattress. Most domestic factories manufacture their products with an eye to the standard dimensions of beds according to GOST standards:

  • duvet cover - 210 × 180 cm;
  • sheet - 210 × 175 cm;
  • pillowcase – 70 × 70 cm.

Euro bedding has its own duvet cover, sheet and pillowcase sizes - 200 × 220, 220 × 240 and 50 × 70 cm, respectively.

If it is not possible to take accurate measurements, it is better to choose wide and long underwear: the sheet can always be folded in half, and the pillowcase can be folded. If the textiles turn out to be less than needed, this problem will no longer be solved. It should be noted that bedding belongs to the category of products that cannot be returned after purchase, even due to discrepancies in dimensions.

Before purchasing a Euro or standard size bed, you need to take all the necessary measurements. Only after this can you begin to choose the design of the product. The sleeping bed should not clutter up the space, so you should focus on compactness and ergonomics. Decor is of secondary importance compared to the individual dimensions of the furniture.

Choosing the right bed size is the key to a good night's sleep!

Bed sizes - length matters, but width comes first!

Selecting bed length

When choosing bed length

you need to focus on the height of the people who will sleep on it. The length of the bed may not matter if you are of average or short height.

Most often, manufacturers offer beds with a standard length of 2 meters. Another common size is 190 cm; a slightly less common bed length is 195 cm.

Sometimes you can find even longer lengths, for example, 220 cm - this is the length that bamboo beds can be made of.

To determine the comfortable length of the bed, you need to add another 30 centimeters to the person’s height. This is especially important for people who sleep on their backs, stretched out to their full height, and even with a large pillow. In such a situation, an extra 40 cm in length will not hurt.

But if your height is 180 cm, or even higher, do not be alarmed - many furniture companies can increase the original length of the bed for an additional fee.

Bed width

Single beds

The width of a single bed can be 70, 80 or 90 cm. It is enough for one adult or child to sleep peacefully without tossing and turning.

Buy a single bed

Single beds

Double beds

The width of a double bed should not be less than 140 cm, otherwise it will not be very comfortable for two people to sleep on it. The most popular size of a double bed is 160 cm wide.

Two spouses can comfortably sit on such a bed, without interfering with each other’s routine of getting ready for bed. And in a dream, it’s unlikely that anyone will disturb anyone, especially if you have a mattress with independent springs.

It is also easy to buy a double bed with a width of 150, 155 or 170 cm. And in addition, many furniture factories have the opportunity to make a complete
bed according to individual sizes
(usually in 5 cm increments), but keep in mind that then you will most likely have to make the mattress order.

Family beds

This bed is a real godsend for couples with children who often snuggle between their parents when they can’t seem to sleep and have to read them a fairy tale. The width of a family bed is at least 180 cm, or even 2 meters. And there really is enough room for everyone.

Choosing a bed size

The choice of beds is varied, and in the search process you often forget what is most important. But the size of the bed is what you need to decide on first of all in order to buy the most suitable bed in all respects.

So, think and decide:

  • what should be the width of the bed - do you plan to sleep alone, in an embrace with a loved one, or without disturbing each other at all, and maybe it wouldn’t hurt to read to the children at night;
  • what length of bed is needed - add 30 centimeters to the height of the tallest person for comfort;
  • and of course, imagine where your new bed is and measure the free space for it.

Well, now you can freely choose the size in the bed

and choose the most beautiful and stylish or cute and inexpensive bed. And then your bed will definitely bring you only the most pleasant sensations!

Products

Width

The average size range for modular furniture is 1400, 1500 and 1600 mm. When designing stationary interior items, manufacturers adhere to the size of 1800, 1900, 2000 mm; the wider the product, the longer the bed length - 2000, 2100, 2200 mm, respectively. The classic version of a two-level bed has a bed of 100 cm (minimum). For reference: the world's largest bed is located in a hotel in Amsterdam, it accommodates 8 people.

Length

The best way to determine the length of the bed is to add 200 mm to your own height. When falling asleep on your back, stretched out, or using large pillows, add another 100 mm. The standard length of beds, according to GOST, is 1900 mm. Models with a length of 1950, 2000-2100 mm are produced less frequently. Bamboo beds reach 2200 mm.

During sleep, all parts of the body should touch the surface of the bed, so models with a length of 220 cm are recommended for tall people. Such beds have a wide bed, which allows you to subconsciously not control movement during sleep. The optimal length of furniture for a person with average dimensions is 1900-2000 mm.

The length of 2100 mm is usually due to a massive headboard and a decorative detail in the foot area. The complexity of the design - leather upholstery, columns, massive headboard, draped curtains - this is what eats up the usable space in the bedroom.

A double bed without a backrest will take up minimal space in a small room or in a country house. The models are equipped with a rectangular or shaped base, upholstered on the outside with eco-leather and beautiful fabric. Inside there is space for storing linen and pillows. The size range includes 1.6x1.9 - 1.8x2 mm. The height “without footboard” reaches 38 - 40 cm.

Height

The optimal sleeping height is 420-480 mm. But there is an important aspect: the different heights of people. Placing your legs in a bent position puts stress on your spine. The main criterion for comfort is 90 degrees in a sitting position. There is no general standard. Conventionally, products produced by global furniture manufacturers are divided into three height groups:

Asian furniture (Turkish ottomans, Japanese tatami and futons) implies the lowest arrangement of structures. It was the Asian masters who laid the foundation for the new fashion for the Turkish ottoman, Persian sofas, and Arab sofa, which initially had small dimensions - the height of an oriental bed with a mattress is 20-30 cm. Low furniture will fit perfectly into the apartment of young residents of the metropolis, a bedroom made in the style of minimalism. The European bed size is the most convenient from the point of view of human anatomy: the average length of the legs from the floor to the knee is 60-65 cm, so half-meter designs make it easy to reach the floor.

The American standard provides for the production of massive beds with a height of 80-100 cm, which will appeal to young and energetic lovers of luxury. Avoid purchasing if you suffer from cardiovascular disease.

The height of the bed is also taken into account when implementing design decisions. In a classic interior, a king-size bed, complemented by steps and benches, is appropriate. The small dimensions of tatami will harmoniously fit into apartments and studios that correspond to the oriental style. European furniture is universal; feel free to choose a product for a spacious bedroom in a country mansion or a small room in a standard five-story building.

Headboard

The headboard is an integral part of the bed, protecting the walls from damage and increasing the comfort of the sleeping place. The standard height of the headboard is 390 mm, and from the floor 900 mm. For fear of visually reducing the space due to height, use a canopy or many pillows.
