How to assemble a bed with your own hands
How to assemble a bed with your own hands! A short story describing how to assemble a bed with your own hands. I would like to emphasize that assembling a bed and making it are two different things. We bought a bed and are assembling it. It's not difficult, everything can be done with a minimum set of tools. Let's get started.
How to assemble a bed with your own hands
I’ll make a reservation right away that there are different beds; I’ll only describe how to assemble the ones that I managed to come across. On sale you can find a bunch of options for modern beds. At the same time, we often purchase a bed made of laminated chipboard (or solid wood) with an orthopedic base and a specially selected mattress. (A curious fact is that the spelling of the word mattress and mattress are the same.) Such beds are inexpensive to make and can be found in many stores.
We buy such a bed, they deliver it to us, and then we have the choice of ordering assembly or assembling it ourselves? I suggest assembling it yourself, it will take an hour or two, and you won’t have to wait for anyone. During assembly, we have two stages ahead of us - assembling the orthopedic base and assembling the bed frame from laminated chipboard or wood. The mattress will not require any assembly effort; you just need to unpack it and put it down.
Assembling an orthopedic bed base
The orthopedic bed base will most likely arrive in a corrugated cardboard box. Opening the box you will find a profile base with drilled holes for installing batten holders - plastic fasteners for battens, curved slats, which allow you to fully reveal the beauty of modern cool mattresses. Accordingly, there will be a set of lath holders and lamellas, as well as fasteners for assembling the base. Perhaps there will be more legs at the base. Well, I hope there will be at least minimal assembly instructions. I came across two options for assembling the frame. In one case, the frame profile is inserted into the grooves, in another case, the profile is fastened with special corners. There may be other options, for example, if the frame is not made of a metal profile. The profile is fastened with bolts. The holes for them do not fit well, you have to knock. The legs are also attached to the bolts. Next we install the slats. Lat holders are simply inserted into the drilled holes; sometimes you have to tap them with a mallet. The batten lamellas are simply inserted into the batten holders. A problem in the assembly will be the absence of any part, for example a plate holder.
Assembling the bed frame and chipboard
Assembling the frame is quite simple. I also came across two options for assembling the frame. For corners or confirmations. Additives must already be made for both. The bed frame is simply placed around the assembled orthopedic base. A complicating element may be the presence of drawers or a lifting mechanism, but you shouldn’t give up here either.
First of all, install the legs on the body. They are simply installed on self-tapping screws. The second stage, we screw the drawers (chipboard for structural rigidity) to the sides of the body. In my case, they were simply attached with confirmations - a minute of work if you have a screwdriver. Next, we attach the head of the bed to the sides and drawers. In my case, again, there were confirmations, although I don’t like it. Apparently the creators of the bed decided that the headboard would only be against the wall. The lower part of the bed frame was attached to the corners. The fittings were already installed in the body; all that remained was to bolt it on.
I won’t describe the body variations. In most cases, their assembly will require knowledge of the fittings that will need to be installed.
This completes the assembly of the bed. I hope how to assemble a bed with your own hands has become a little more clear. All that remains is to wipe everything away from unnecessary dust, put it back in place and put the mattress on.
How to choose a suitable orthopedic base
The orthopedic effect base can be used with or without a bed frame. Functionality depends on the correct choice.
- The size and design of the base are selected for a specific mattress model. The most expensive type of orthopedic product cannot improve the quality of a cheap product.
- For models based on an independent spring unit, grilles with an increased number of battens are suitable. This frame is compatible with any mattress.
- The base for a single bed can have four support points. Larger structures require the installation of 5 to 8 legs.
- A children's mattress and an orthopedic base for it must be at least 160 × 80 cm, since the length is chosen to be at least 20 cm greater than the child's height.
- Standard orthopedic bases have the following parameters:
USEFUL INFORMATION: Orthopedic pillows: how to choose the right one
Model type | Sleeping place, cm | Height | Characteristics |
Children's | 80×160 80×190 80×200 | Varies from 280 to 320 mm. Of these, the leg is 250 mm, and 30 mm is allocated to the profile | Designs vary in type of batten, lattice shape, frame and availability of adjustment options |
Single | 90×190 90×195 90×200 100×200
One-and-a-half-bed | 120×190 120×195 120×200 140×190 140×195 140×200 | Create a springy effect. Models with cursors for load adjustment increase the level of comfort
Double | 160×190 160×195 160×210 180×190 180×195 180×200 200×200 | They take the basic load of the body and can withstand weights of more than 150 kg. Required equipment with a crossbar |
The dimensions of the base are determined by the internal size of the bed, which corresponds to the size of the mattress.
Signs of a quality frame:
- rounded shape of the legs, as the large working area increases stability;
- profile – 30 × 30 mm with a wall thickness of 1.5 mm;
- the number of wide lamellas is at least 12–15 pcs., narrow ones – from 22 pcs. and more;
- reliable fastening of the lath holders.
How to assemble a single bed?
Often a model assembly diagram is included in the kit. However, the general design of all metal or wooden beds is the same. You can make the frame alone, but it is better to have an assistant who will hold the side elements.
Before starting work, you need to check the number of parts and the presence of fasteners that are supplied in the kit. There should be enough free space to allow the bed to be turned over.
To assemble a single bed, you need to prepare the following tools:
- a set of screwdrivers or a screwdriver;
- rubber hammer;
- hexagon.
How to assemble a double bed?
To understand how to assemble a double bed, instructions are not always needed. Often the design of a stock of this size is quite simple and consists of the following elements:
- side panels;
- headboard;
- foot back;
- central cross beam.
You can install a wooden bed yourself if you have the following tools:
- screwdriver or screwdriver;
- hexagon;
- rubber hammer;
- PVA glue if necessary.
The side panels are first connected to the headboard. For this, screws or dowels are used. If a dowel connection is used, the fastening is additionally coated with PVA glue. Then the back is fixed using Euroscrews or wooden pins. It is important to maintain a 90° angle. A corner is used to check the joints.
To avoid accidentally breaking the material, it is advisable to do the work together. One person will hold the drawer, and the second will attach the back or headboard.
A longitudinal beam for the mattress pad is installed in the center of the frame. It can fit into a special groove or be secured with screws.
At the same stage, install the bed legs. The method of fixation depends on the type of supports. These can be self-tapping screws or confirmations.
Base
The next step in assembling a double bed is installing the base. To do this, 3 longitudinal beams are connected to each other by 2 crossbars. To fix the mattress, slats or special bars are installed. You can assemble the base of a double bed with your own hands using a screwdriver or screwdriver. The bars are fastened with screws. The attachment points are marked with holes or grooves depending on the model of the stock.
When assembling the base for double beds, you must strictly observe the same distance between the transverse bars. This will allow you to securely fix the mattress, evenly distribute the load and ensure quality sleep. As you can see, the base for double and single beds is mounted in the same way.
Assembly
The next step in the instructions for assembling the bed involves installing the base on the frame. To do this, use self-tapping screws or confirmations. It is necessary to properly fix the mattress pad to prevent parts from breaking. All fittings should be fully tightened, and then plugs should be put on them.
Do-it-yourself bedroom repair
If all assembly rules are followed, the only thing that can cause a sleeping place to become unusable is a breakdown of the lamella or lath holder. Even an inexperienced craftsman can repair a bed with his own hands.
New low-quality holders have the appearance and quality of rubber, but over time they lose elasticity and break. As a result, you can hear the bottom creaking, and the slats often fall out of the fastenings. In this case, repairs are necessary. Replacing damaged base elements will have a short-lived effect, since they will be followed by other, equally low-quality parts breaking. The best way out is to improve the method of attaching the slats with your own hands.
Preparatory stage
You will need special tools and materials. Make sure you have:
- construction stapler with staples;
- screwdrivers;
- chisels;
- roulette;
- electric drills with drills 4-5 mm;
- M4/M5 bolts, engravers, nuts – 4 pcs. everyone;
- 4 furniture footers;
- knife;
- 2 durable edge strips, 20-40 mm wide and 2 m long.
Repair procedure
- Remove damaged tips by prying up the plastic parts with a chisel.
- Use a screwdriver to adjust the loose connections of the bed frame.
- Place the lamellas on the freed frame with the curve down, repeating their previous placement.
- Attach the end of the edge tape with two staplers to the first plank, retreating 5-7 cm from its edge.
- Pull the edge tape lightly and staple it to the subsequent planks in the same way.
- You need to do the same on the other side of the slats, using the second tape.
- At the end of the work, roll up the resulting canvas from the slats and turn it over. Then place it back on the frame with the tape facing down.
- Mark the locations of the first lamella on the frame. Drill holes on both sides of the frame with an electric drill.
- Bolt the fittings together in the prepared holes. They will act as limiters that fix the position of the first bar.
- Install the first plank in a fixed position, slightly tension the slats. Place the same marks near the last bar.
- Prepare the holes and install the fittings.
Such repairs, done by yourself, will not take much time and will not entail large expenses. But you will be spared the problems of low-quality fastenings.
How to assemble a bed with a lifting mechanism?
Not everyone knows how to assemble a bed with a lifting mechanism. The installation of lifts must be given special attention, since this determines whether the product will fold. The stock installation process is slightly different from the standard model. However, if you follow the advice of experts, such work is not difficult.
Assembling a bed with a lifting mechanism begins with installing the side panels and headboard. This can be done using Euroscrews or special angles. Rarely in sleeping places with a lifting device is a dowel connection used. When the frame is ready, a central beam is installed that will support the base. The legs are also attached, if provided for by the design of the bed.
To assemble the base, 3 longitudinal beams are connected to each other by crossbars. If the mattress pad is wooden, Euroscrews or confirmats are used. The metal base is secured with bolts. After this, the lamellas are laid. They are fixed with self-tapping screws or self-tapping screws.
Bed with an orthopedic base: what to look for
Hello, dear friends! Each of us loves a good night's sleep. For many, this is pure pleasure, because what is better than a sound and healthy sleep?! Yes, practically nothing. But sometimes with our own hands we sign the sentence for proper rest; we choose the wrong beds.
Recently, a bed with an orthopedic base has proven itself to be excellent and has supplanted its main competitor. Moreover, the orthobase can have an adult and children's bed, a chair-bed and a sofa, some kind of sofa and other pieces of furniture intended for sleep and relaxation.
Today we will talk about an orthopedic bed base. Moreover, these tips will be relevant in cases where you need a small single bed for a child, a single bed or large double beds for adults.
Types of orthopedic bases with lamellas
Based on the dimensions of the bed, the orthopedic base for the mattress is divided into single and double models. Structurally, the base for a single bed consists of independent bent slats secured to the frame using lath holders. The double slatted bed base is equipped with an additional transverse rail that eliminates deflection and two rows of latoflexes.
The design of the mattress stand can be equipped with support legs and transformation mechanisms. Single stands have four legs, double models have additional central legs.
Some models of mattress stands have the function of adjusting the hardness of individual zones. To regulate the degree of rigidity, the bases are equipped with special clamps that allow the slats to be connected.
The standard length of a mattress stand, which has gained the most popularity, is 2000 mm. The furniture market also offers less popular non-standard sizes - 2050, 2100 and 2200 mm. For children's and teenage beds, bars with a length of 1700 to 1900 mm are provided. Standard grille width:
- for a single bed – 700 mm;
- for double models – 1200,1400,1600,1800,2000 mm.
Types of bases
The beds offered for sale can be with or without an ORT base. It is ideal when the bed and mattress are made by one manufacturer, which allows you to achieve the optimal beneficial effect.
Before you buy yourself a sleeping place, you need to understand the concept of foundations. Not everyone fully understands what it is and why it is needed at all.
There are 2 types of bases.
- Flat solid. This is a surface made from plywood, chipboard and planed boards. They are coated with protective compounds, varnishes, and attached to the furniture frame. It is a heavy design and not particularly mobile. Plus, it will not allow you to unlock the full potential of a mattress with an ortho-effect;
- Orthopedic. This is a frame with slats and a convenient lifting mechanism and legs, on which the slats themselves are attached. The slatted or lamellar base is fixed with lath holders.
Orthobases have a number of advantages in the form of comfortable and healthy sleep, comfortable body position, and proper load distribution. It is a mistake to think that it’s all about the mattress. To achieve maximum effect, it is highly recommended to use a bed base that is beneficial to the human body. And it doesn’t matter whether it’s a bed measuring 120x200 or 160x200 cm.
Features of orthopedic mattresses
Orthopedic mattresses and bases are products that have a rather complex design. That is why it is important to strictly follow all manufacturing rules. This installation consists of a rigidly fixed frame made of high-strength materials. To ensure reliable fastening, crossbars are installed that are designed to support a certain weight.
The choice of natural, healthy materials is very important, because a person spends a third of all time on the bed while sleeping.
This base has orthopedic properties. It reduces the load on the musculoskeletal system, allows muscles to relax, which improves the quality of rest during sleep. Compared to conventional designs, you should pay attention to a number of advantages:
- The entire load is distributed evenly over the surface. This allows you to significantly extend the life of the mattress. The most comfortable conditions for relaxation are also provided by repeating the shape of the body. The lattice design allows you to evenly distribute the load that is applied to the base. This is due to the fact that the human body exerts different pressures in different places. Compensating for these features can significantly improve the quality of sleep and relaxation after a hard day at work.
- The design is built in such a way that it provides comfortable rest and a high degree of relaxation during sleep. To maintain muscle tone, the best solution is to combine an orthopedic mattress and a bed with a special base for weight distribution. This gives you vigor and freshness after sleep.
- Most orthopedic structures are compact. This makes it easy to transport the product regardless of the conditions. To do this, it is enough to disassemble the structure and then assemble it using simple tools.
- The base and mattress can support quite a lot of weight. This is especially beneficial for people of large build or for married couples who share one bed. At the same time, the risks of developing problems with the spine during sleep are reduced, since the bed adapts to the individual shape of the body.
Note! As a rule, orthopedic bases consist of special components - lamellas. They are located across the frame, providing the necessary rigidity and reliability of the bed structure. As a result, optimal weight distribution occurs under load, which allows for comfortable and healthy sleep for a person.
A bed made by yourself will cost at least 2 times cheaper than purchased.
The importance of choosing a quality support and foundation is difficult to appreciate. Human health depends on this. You can purchase ready-made designs, order them from specialists, or make them yourself. To do this, you should familiarize yourself with a number of subtleties.
Having decided to make a bed yourself, you should decide on the design and appearance.
Selection of lamellas
The first thing to start choosing is lamellas. They play an important role in the efficiency of the sleeping place itself. Assembly is carried out using elements based on various materials. But it’s optimal to use several.
At the same time, the lamellas themselves are made on the basis of:
My advice to you. Take birch. This is the optimal material in terms of its characteristics, which at the same time costs significantly less than its competitors. It makes no sense to overpay for lamellas. Inexpensive, but high quality and reliable.
As for the dimensions, the standard dimensions for lamellas have the following values:
- thickness varies from 6 to 8 millimeters;
- the optimal width is considered to be 63 mm;
- the length is chosen based on the size of the base;
- the distance between the lamellas themselves is from 70 to 80 mm;
- The optimal quantity is considered to be 11-13 pieces.
By adjusting the distance, the orthopedic effect changes.
Those who weigh a lot should be careful. The orthobase is less resistant to loads than a solid flat one. But the problem can be solved by using more durable and densely installed lamellas. Ask the seller or directly from the manufacturer what loads a particular bed model is designed for. To do this, you can visit stores in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg, or simply contact them by phone.
Products with adjustment
Special cursors in the area of the highest load make it possible to select the rigidity of the lamellas, adjusting the base to the personal needs of the user.
- By sliding the sliders in and out, you can set an enhanced level of body support.
- Cursors that regulate rigidity are most often installed in the lumbar region, but can also be located on all lamellas.
- Installation of an additional block with double or triple slats in the active zone improves the orthopedic characteristics of the mattress.
USEFUL INFORMATION: What is a mattress cover: which one is better to choose?
In transformable bases, you can change the angle of inclination in the head, legs and lumbar area. Adjustment can be mechanical or using an electric drive.
Dimensions
Obviously, for 2 people you need to take double models, and for 1 person single or one-and-a-half-bed models. But that’s not all you need to know about the dimensions before buying a structure for yourself.
- The length must be chosen to be 20 centimeters greater than the height of the tallest person who will sleep on the bed;
- The minimum width is 80 centimeters;
- The recommended length of the legs is 24-25 centimeters, which directly affects the height of the base;
- The number of legs varies from 4 to 8 pieces per frame;
- The total height is 27-28 centimeters for comfortable getting in and out of bed.
When choosing the correct dimensions, do not forget to take into account the expected load. It is thanks to the lattice, which is formed by the slats used, that it is possible to rationally distribute the weight of a person and increase the service life of the mattress itself.
Varieties
There are several different options. The simplest and most inexpensive is a regular orthopedic base without additional functions. It can be collapsible or solid, on a wooden or metal frame. The wide metal frame, which cannot be disassembled, is durable, but inconvenient for transportation and installation.
A model with adjustable rigidity will cost a little more. In addition to single slats, it is equipped with double or triple slats, which can be moved and installed in the desired part of the structure. Adjustment allows you to create optimal conditions for different parts of the body:
- head, shoulders;
- backs;
- pelvic area;
- hips
Characteristics of slats for beds, manufacturing materials
Manufacturers also produce models in which you can change the angle of the bed, for example, raise the head and neck area or legs. They can be single or double; in the second option, the angle can be changed for the entire structure at once, or for each user individually. You can do this manually, or purchase a base with an electric drive. Then the design is additionally equipped with a remote control.
Single types of orthopedic bases should have a length of 20–25 cm greater than the height of the consumer (standard 200–205 cm), and a width of at least 80 cm. Double models usually have a width of 160 to 200 cm. You can order the design according to individual parameters. Not only an adult bed, but also a child’s bed can be orthopedic; it will provide the baby with sound sleep and reduce the likelihood of posture problems in the future.
The mattress is selected depending on the parameters of the base. It should fit perfectly and not move out. Manufacturers often produce products as a set, which makes the choice much easier.
Experts recommend purchasing a mattress first and then looking for a design that fits the parameters.
Another option for comfortable furniture is a sofa equipped with an orthopedic base. In terms of comfort, it is practically no different from a full-fledged bed, but the cost of the product is much lower. The design is perfect for relaxing in the living room.
Often the base is supplemented with a built-in lifting mechanism. This provides access to the storage drawers that are located in the bed frame. The design of such a device can be mechanical, spring or gas lift.
No additional features
With adjustable hardness
With tilt angle adjustment
With lifting mechanism
Sofa
Lifting mechanism
It is also recommended to pay attention to the type of lifting mechanism used. There are several types in total.
- Manual. They are distinguished by an extremely reliable mechanism and a fairly long service life, compared to competitors. But it is often inconvenient to use, since you will have to support both the mattress and the base itself;
- Spring. They are difficult to lift, but perform their basic functions perfectly. Over time, the springs used will stretch, which means replacing them;
- Gas. Smooth, silent, easy to use. Suitable for heavy and large beds;
- Electrical. Operates from a control panel. The only downside is the high cost.
A soft and folding bed with a convenient mechanism, be it wooden or metal, suits many people.
Someone even decides to do something similar with their own hands, relying on photos, video instructions, their own experience and their imagination. Reading the reviews, I can say with confidence that beginners can create a bed with their own hands. But it’s better to buy lamellas ready-made. After all, it is extremely difficult to make such curved elements yourself. But at home it is almost impossible.
Useful tips
Finally, I suggest you study a few more tips that will help you choose the right orthopedic base for your future bed. And it doesn’t matter whether you buy it or make it yourself.
Try to ensure that the design meets several key requirements.
- The quality of the lamellas. Study their condition carefully. Chips, cracks, knots and other defects are not allowed. Otherwise, they can ruin the mattress and quickly break even under light load. You already know about the material;
- Creak. Make sure the base does not squeak. Otherwise, you will face discomfort while sleeping. If the product is metal, use gaskets and lubricant as needed;
- Metal frames. They are not allowed to have scratches, chips and especially traces of rust. Such frames are durable, but wood is preferable for many reasons;
- Wooden bases. Check them for loose mounting holes, poorly processed edges, and traces of rotten wood;
- Accessories. Sometimes quite good bases are equipped with frankly cheap fittings. Here you can solve the problem in two ways. Take a more expensive bed, or replace the fittings with something of high quality from trusted manufacturers. In the second case, you will definitely spend less money.
Beds with orthopedic bases do have significant advantages. They are mobile, compact, easy to disassemble when moving, and just as easy to put back together without the use of special tools.
I am very interested to read your reviews and comments regarding orthopedic beds. Do you find them useful and how superior are they to standard solid bottom beds? Is there a difference and is it worth paying extra for orthopedics?
That's all I have. Thank you for your attention! Subscribe, invite your friends to join us and expect a lot of new, interesting and useful materials!
Types of lath holders and lamellas
The task of the lattice base is to transmit and absorb forces from the mattress, as well as to correctly distribute body weight and the load on the spine. Slats made from birch or beech veneer, steamed using special technology, can cope with this task perfectly. There are beech slats, they have increased strength, so their price is higher than birch slats.
When making slats, manufacturers use slats with a width of 3-10 cm, rarely 11-12 cm. During the fastening process, the slats are placed at intervals of 3-8 cm. The narrower the slats, the smaller the distance between them. The standard number of lamellas usually reaches 14-15 pieces.
Orthopedic lamella bases are usually divided into 2 types:
- With wide lamellas
The width of the slats is usually 5 cm or more, the distance between the lamellas is more than 4 cm. Wide lamella bases are suitable for mattresses without springs or with hard filling. - With narrow slats
A universal type of base, the most durable: slats 3-5 cm wide are used and the distance between them is no more than 4-5 cm. Suitable for all modern types of mattresses, it is recommended for the best orthopedic effect.
Some modern modifications are designed to regulate rigidity by moving plastic linings along the slats.
Types and features of holders:
- Rubber overlays
Withstand considerable loads due to shock absorbers, do not creak under the weight of the body. - Plastic overlays
are quite durable, but have a load limit that users should consider. - Mortise
usually made of plastic. Characteristic for bases with wide slats.
