Step-by-step instructions on how to sew a bean bag chair yourself at home using the proposed pattern with dimensions

The multifunctional bean bag chair is at the peak of its popularity. It has many advantages over other models.
The absence of a frame allows the product to completely follow the curves of the body.

In addition, the chair is characterized by mobility, light weight and ease of use.

Features of upholstered frameless furniture

A design feature is the absence of a rigid frame. The bean bag chair is made in two sizes – 50 and 100 cm in diameter. This depends on the height and weight of the users, as well as the purpose of the room.

This frameless furniture consists of two covers: internal and external. The removable cover is made from different materials (cotton, linen, velvet, fur, leatherette) .

And the main requirement for the inner cover is strength and high density of the fabric.
The main thing is that the selected materials are practical, wear-resistant, pleasant to the touch and fit harmoniously into the environment. Attention : after some time of use, the chair may shrink.
The situation is corrected by adding filler to the inner case. The peculiarity of a frameless chair is that under the weight of a person it completely takes on the shape of a vacationer. On such products, people can completely relax and unwind with a book or laptop in their hands.

The advantages of frameless furniture include:

  • Wide range of applications . The bean bag chair will fit harmoniously into a child's room, living room or bedroom, as well as into landscape design.

  • Light weight . The average weight of furniture varies from 7 to 10 kg. This makes it easier for her to move around the house.
  • Original appearance .
    The removable cover is made from a variety of materials. They differ in colors and fabric textures. You can make a bright and colorful cover in the shape of an animal’s face for your child’s room.
  • Possibility of outdoor use . The furniture fits harmoniously into any landscape design. The use of modern fillers and the use of waterproof, wear-resistant fabric for sewing the top cover allows it to be used in the warm season outdoors.

The final stage is decoration

The inner cover does not require finishing, as it serves as the base. But the outer one can be decorated with something. It could have originally been made from some kind of printed or altered fabric. You can make beautiful applique or embroidery on a simple plain material. You can also cover the chair with an additional bright cape: it will hide the seams and combine the appearance of the chair with the overall interior.

A drop of motley fabric

Shapes: pear, ball and drop

A bean bag chair can have different shapes. But the most popular and in demand are:

  • Pear .
    Externally it resembles a frame product. It is equipped with an elongated upper part that acts as a backrest. When you sit on the chair, comfortable soft armrests appear. The pear chair is a classic and common type.

  • Ball . Externally, the chair looks more like a couch, since it does not have a pronounced back. Two ball chairs look beautiful in the interior - a large one for sitting, a small one for a footrest.
  • A drop . It is sewn not in the form of hexagons, unlike the ball model, but in the form of a drop. It, like other models, easily takes the shape of a resting person, is soft and easy to use.

Care of the finished product

A homemade bean bag chair will last a very long time, but only if you take proper care of it. It all depends on the type of material and padding. It is worth choosing the safest, hypoallergenic and synthetic materials that can “breathe”. Replacing the filler and washing is required in the following cases:

  • Dampness;
  • The appearance of insects;
  • Gradual collapse of the filler.

Materials

Different materials are used to sew the outer cover. The main thing is that they have:

  • abrasion resistance and high strength;
  • ease of care;
  • attractiveness.

What is the cover made of?

As a removable cover, different materials are used to make a bean bag chair:

  • Oxford is a popular upholstery fabric with an aesthetic appearance and high technical qualities.
    It does not get wet, which allows you to use furniture outdoors and is pleasant to the touch. It is easily machine washable and does not absorb dust, dirt or unpleasant odors.

  • Faux leather . It is easy to care for and comes in a wide range of colors. This fabric is suitable for outdoor use. Since it is not afraid of increased moisture and sudden temperature changes. Also, artificial leather is not afraid of exposure to sunlight and ultraviolet rays. In other words, the material is versatile, practical and wear-resistant.
  • Flock . Pleases consumers with a pleasant and velvety texture. The fabric is practical, durable and resistant to negative factors. Even if there are pets in the house who love to relax on upholstered furniture, there will be no problems with care. Since dirt, wool and unpleasant odors are easily removed from the surface of the flock.
  • Microvelvet . The material amazes customers with a large selection of shades. It is easy to care for and has high technical characteristics.
  • Velor . It is distinguished by softness, interesting colors, and versatility. You can sew a chair from velor for both an adult and a children's model.

Tip : the inner cover is made from denser fabrics. A good choice would be spunbond with perforations for ventilation. This fabric is sold in rolls and is characterized by its low cost and high technical qualities.

Filler

As for fillers, you can use:

  • Expanded polystyrene .
    It is sold in the form of granules or balls. Depending on the size of the furniture item, you will need to buy 1-2 packages of material weighing 60 liters. Its advantages include: high hygiene and hygroscopicity, light weight, wear resistance, resistance to high moisture, and the ability to withstand heavy loads. The material does not absorb water and sweat, and is suitable for making children's furniture.

  • Foam rubber and polystyrene foam granules . Double filling, used in a ratio of 70% polystyrene foam and 30% foam rubber, will allow vacationers to experience maximum comfort.
  • Bean filler . Some people use peas, beans or beans to fill frameless furniture. This creative approach will allow you to make a budget chair model with high technical characteristics. It is worth considering here that legumes absorb moisture and attract rodents.
  • Old things . To make the chair really inexpensive, you can use unnecessary old things as filler. Here it is recommended to choose softer materials.

What can you make an ottoman from with your own hands?

Above we told you how to make ottomans with your own hands; a master class for each product option will help you realize your plans. However, all the materials for making an original piece of furniture cannot be included in one article, since there are a huge number of objects around that are suitable for creating a masterpiece, such as these.

Tires

You can put a wonderful DIY ottoman made from tires at home, on the veranda of your garden plot, or right in your dacha, replacing expensive rattan furniture with practically free ones.

To make practical furniture, just cut two circles from plywood and place them on top and bottom of the tire. Then, secure the bases with self-tapping screws and decorate the entire workpiece with twine. To make the ottoman a little higher, you can screw on two legs.

Plywood and vinyl

Sheets of plywood with dimensions 45x45 and cuts of 45 degrees are used to make the frame. The vinyl is cut to the size of the plywood with a margin of 2-3 cm. Place a soft cloth and thin foam rubber on top of the vinyl, and cover the entire structure with a plywood sheet. Bend the vinyl upholstery and secure it with a stapler. To attach the frame, use metal corners and self-tapping screws.

Plastic pipes

Making a pouf from plumbing pipes looks like this:

  1. First, you need to cut the pipes into pieces 30 cm long (about 9 pieces), then paint the pipes with acrylic paint in several layers and treat them with protective varnish.
  2. After drying, the pipes must be secured with an adhesive gun.
  3. You can use polyurethane bathroom mats for the seat. Fold them in half and make slits along the perforations (the length of the cuts is 5 cm). Roll the mat to form a bud and insert the rolls into the pipes. The buds should fit tightly, then no additional fastening will be required.

I will describe a master class on how to make a soft ottoman with your own hands so that it fits under the dressing table. The top has a removable tray and you can store any accessories and hair styling tools. For my wife it has become simply irreplaceable.

I remember the children's poem: “Olenka knows that she took the luggage back in its place, only...” that’s how my wife will never put her hairdressing equipment back in its place, after she has used it (she does her hair at home) everything is lying around. So I decided to make her an ottoman for storing hairdressing tools, which would be comfortable to sit on while she does her hair.

Bottom part

To make a pouf with your own hands we will need:

– 4 pieces of chipboard 400 x 400mm, thickness 16mm – front / back, top and bottom walls; – 2 parts made of chipboard 368 x 400 mm, 16 mm thick – sides; – 3 x 50 x 16 mm 368 mm (chipboard) – base; – 2 pieces 260 x 360mm 12mm – front / rear container; – 2 pieces 260 x 336 mm 12 mm – sides of the container; – 1 piece 248 x 336 mm 12mm – a strip for dividing the center of the container; - 1 PC. 336 x 336 mm 12mm – main container; – 50 mm screws, small wheels and 16 mm screws; – 2 butt loops and 16mm and 30mm screws; – 2 meters of dense fabric; – 1/2 meter of lining fabric (you can, of course, use the leftovers from your main fabric); – 2 meters of thin padding polyester; - PC. 400 x 400mm thin foam rubber for the top of the pouf; – iron for straps; – spray glue; – 4 x 30 mm screws 20 pcs.

Tools:

- electric drill; – stapler; – corner clamps; - roulette.

Pattern with detailed dimensions for children and adults

To make a pear chair you will need to make a pattern. You can draw it yourself or find a ready-made version on the Internet.

The pattern is drawn on graph paper. And then it is transferred to the fabric. The parts are cut along the contour.

Attention : when transferring the pattern to the fabric, do not forget to leave allowances of a few centimeters on each side.

The pattern of a chair for an adult will consist of the following parts:

  • 6 pieces of wedge-shaped parts, 15 cm wide and 40 at the ends, with a diameter of 50 cm and a length of 130 cm;
  • diamond-shaped top 15 cm on each side;
  • The bottom is diamond-shaped, 40 cm on each side.

The pattern of a chair for a child will consist of the following 6 wedge-shaped parts:

  • height – 90 cm;
  • diameter – 45 cm;
  • width – 40-22 cm.

The bean bag chair consists of:

  • Internal zippered cover filled with polystyrene foam. Here you should choose thick cotton or raincoat fabric.
  • Outer cover. Suitable for manufacturing: corduroy, leather, velor. You will need to sew a 1 meter long zipper onto the removable cover.

What else is needed?

The process of creating a bean bag chair is very simple if you have not only the necessary materials at hand, but also the tools. In addition to two types of fabric and filler, you will need:

  • sewing machine (ideally, but you can sew the bag by hand);
  • two zippers for covers;
  • threads in color;
  • scissors.

Tailor's pins

To create a pattern, you also need graph paper or tracing paper, a large ruler, a pencil and a soap or special chalk for transferring the design onto the fabric. To make the work easier, tailor's pins and regular basting needles can also be useful.

Master class on how to sew it yourself at home step by step

After making a pattern on the material, it’s time to sew a bean bag chair with your own hands:

  1. First, the parts are fastened to each other with needles and side seams are basted on them.

  2. Next, the seams are sewn with a sewing machine, and the product is smoothed with an iron.
  3. The outer wedges are folded on the blanks and basted.
  4. The inner cover is sewn together. A zipper, 40 cm long, is sewn onto one of its sides. The filler will be poured through it in the future. The seams of the product are processed using an overlock machine .
  5. Let's start making the removable outer cover. A 1 meter long zipper will be sewn into it.
  6. Both covers are turned inside out and the top is sewn to the outer cover.
  7. The bottom of both covers is ground off and the circles are attached.
  8. The product is turned right side out.

Now all that remains is to fill the chair with polystyrene foam and you can install the piece of furniture in the interior.

Attention : polystyrene foam clings to all surfaces. If you scatter it around the room, the cleaning process will take a long time.

We create from plastic bottles

Materials used for this:

  • plastic bottles (from 35 to 55 pieces). For resistance to stress, it is advisable to take bottles made of thick plastic;
  • foam;
  • thick cardboard (packaging);
  • scotch;
  • upholstery fabric.

From bottles, the pouf can be shaped into any shape - square, round or rectangular. The main thing is to have a sufficient number of bottles. The easiest way would be to make the seat round. And you should start creating from the middle. Using tape, we begin, moving along the radius of the bottle, to attach the rest to it. In this case, the tape must be scrolled more carefully.

It is recommended to connect one bottle at a time to make the structure more durable. When all the elements are connected, it is necessary to create the bottom and top of the structure from cardboard. To do this you need to cut out 2 circles. The cardboards are carefully wrapped with tape on the top and bottom of the structure.

Then you need to start upholstering the sides of the seat. Foam rubber is used for this. A rectangle is cut out of it and glued to the side walls of the future seat. The photo shows do-it-yourself ottomans for the hallway.

From wooden boxes

To make a pouf from boxes, you need to have the following materials:

  • wooden boxes – 4 pcs;
  • metal corners for connecting boxes – 8 pcs;
  • bars measuring 5x10 cm and a length of at least 2.5 m;
  • rollers with screws 4 pcs;
  • screws: 65 mm long – 4 pcs; 30 mm – 12 pcs; 25 mm – 4 pcs.

The tools you will need are a screwdriver and a drill. To build a structure from boxes, you need to take one box and turn it over. It should lie upside down. The second one needs to be placed on top of the first one, end to end. Then use a screwdriver to drill holes for 3 30 mm screws. Connect 2 boxes.

The boxes are fastened together. The resulting structure

After this, turn the box that is on its end so that it lies upside down. Then take the third box and place it end to end against the second. Pin them together. Do similar actions with the last box. And finally, the fourth box must be connected to the first.

To give the resulting structure strength, it is necessary to make a frame using bars. To do this, a wooden frame is attached to the top of the boxes and connected using metal corners. The rollers are attached to the bottom of the structure with 65 mm screws.

The bars are fastened with metal corners. Rollers are attached to the frame.

For the top, upholstery fabric, plywood, a furniture stapler, batting, paint and a paint brush are used. Before starting work, the boxes are painted and left in a ventilated room until completely dry. In the meantime, work on the production of the soft top is being carried out.

Making a fur ottoman

Squares are cut from plywood and foam rubber to the size of the box structure. From upholstery fabric - a larger square so that there is a reserve. Then, using a stapler, the plywood, foam rubber and upholstery fabric are connected. The handmade pillow is ready. At the last stage, the pillow and the frame of boxes are connected.

Ready-made ottoman

From plywood

To do this you will need the following materials:

  • Chipboard of the same size, approximately 40x40 - 5 pcs;
  • 4 beams – 40x80x80 mm;
  • metal corners – 4 pcs;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • foam;
  • special fabric for covering;
  • stapler for furniture.

First, a box is assembled from chipboard - the walls and top of the structure. All parts are connected with metal corners and self-tapping screws. If desired, you can attach roller wheels to the bottom of the structure, just like in a pouf made from wooden boxes.

From old tires

To make a pouf from car tires, you will need:

  • tires – 1 piece;
  • braided rope;
  • MDF plywood according to tire size - 2 pcs;
  • self-tapping screws;
  • varnish;
  • glue.

Preparation begins with cleaning the tire. It must be washed and dried thoroughly. Then attach sheets of plywood to the top and bottom of the tire. Using a hammer drill, drill several holes, then use self-tapping screws to connect the plywood and the tire.

To speed up the process of decorating the pouf, before starting work, wrap the tire in burlap and screw the plywood to it. Then proceed to upholstery with rope. If you don't use burlap, just take the rope and glue it to the center of the MDF sheet with glue. Next you should move in a circle until you reach the tire. Using the same technology, it is necessary to cover the side surfaces.

Step-by-step operating instructions

To ensure that a piece of furniture serves its owners for as long as possible, it is recommended:

  1. Periodically add filler to it. Thus, the product will retain its original shape.

  2. Do not place the chair near heating appliances (radiators, stoves, fireplaces).
  3. Protect furniture from prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. This will cause the material to fade .
  4. Do not use bleaches or stain removers containing ammonia.
  5. Wash the outer cover on a delicate cycle, according to the fabric manufacturer's recommendations.

As you can see from all of the above, a bean bag chair does not require much work . And with proper use, it will serve its owners for many years.

Tip : if you like comfortable upholstered furniture, try making a hammock chair or a chair from tires. And next to them a coffee or glass table and even an ottoman will look good.

Secrets of choosing a chair

When choosing a chair, you need to pay attention to:

  1. the presence of zippers and inserts that provide comfort in use;
  2. quality of seams (must be smooth, aesthetic, without defects);
  3. the product is equipped with an internal cover that ensures a long service life;
  4. availability of a refill kit;
  5. quality of granules (elements must be dense, no more than 5 mm in diameter), etc.

Before choosing a chair bag, you need to determine the price category of the product:

  • premium;
  • middle class;
  • budget.

Cost affects quality, durability, and the presence of additional filler. High-end products are turned on special equipment using reinforced threads with reinforcement.
