A bright and spacious kitchen with a practical kitchen unit: a built-in dish drainer above the sink and hooks for frying pans above the gas stove will ensure maximum ease of use

A dish dryer in a cabinet is an integral element of the kitchen, which should be present in any room intended for preparing dishes and eating. Given the variety of models, types and configurations, for the right choice it is necessary to take into account quite a lot of nuances. In this article, we tried to collect all the most necessary and useful things about kitchen dryers.

Types of dryers

There are several models of drying racks for the kitchen. Based on the installation method, they can be divided into four categories:

  • Dryers for installation on the sink. The products are made of plastic or stainless steel and are mounted on sinks. They are distinguished by their low weight, simple design, but do not carry any special design load in the room. Simple models are designed for a small amount of dishes. It is always at hand, which means it is convenient to put not only plates, but also vegetables after washing. There are dryers on sale in the form of a lattice or mesh, as well as with a perforated surface.

    Please note: you can buy a dryer made of metal and silicone. It can even be used for hot dishes.

  • Built-in dryers. They are installed in a cabinet that stands on the floor and may have wall cabinets and drawers. Simple models have two tiers - for plates and mugs. Complex designs are also designed for other types of cookware. Thanks to the closed drying rack, the dishes will be protected from dust. Many built-in dryers have trays into which dishes are placed directly from the sink. But this is not very good for the cabinet itself, because a large amount of moisture collects in it. The main dryer in the closet should always be supplemented by an auxiliary one, which is located near the dishwasher.

  • Tabletop dryer. It is located near the sink, for example, on the countertop. A tabletop dryer can be of different configurations: collapsible and stationary, with two or three tiers, for appliances. Since the product will always be in sight, you need to choose a color that matches the style of the entire kitchen. When there is no wall cabinet above the sink, you can buy a drying rack with a lid; it will protect the dishes from dust.

  • Wall-mounted dryer. It is mounted in a certain place at the required height directly on the wall, you can also install it in a closet. The dimensions are selected so that the item fits into the free space.

    The dryer can have one or two tiers. More complex models are often equipped with additional compartments: for example, if only plates can be placed in single-level dryers, all kitchen items will fit in a multi-level dryer.

We put it in the corner: corner baskets, dryers, carousels, magic corner

Corner units are increasingly appearing in our kitchens. How to wisely use the space of corner cabinets? After all, the space inside such a box cannot be called accessible. In this matter, various corner mechanisms come to our aid: retractable baskets, carousels, magic corners, etc.

Corner mechanism for kitchen

One of the representatives of this family is the BARRA corner mechanism from PULSE. The mechanism is designed for installation with hinged facades with a width of 450 mm and has a simple, reliable design. It is quite easy to install, because... The mechanism does not have complex additives or adjustments. An important advantage is that it can be installed on both the right and left sides, i.e. the mechanism is universal. Full extension of all baskets allows full access to the interior space. Corner pull-out baskets can withstand loads of up to 10 kg, the total load on the mechanism is 40 kg. It is enough to pull out the first block of the mechanism by a special handle and move it to the side, and then the second part of the mechanism appears, which can also be easily pulled out. A more advanced option is the FLYBOX series LAMINA from Vibo. In this solution, the entire volume of the corner housing is used to the maximum. Unlike BARRA, the extension of the mechanism occurs in one action - baskets of one level move out like a “car”, completely opening access to the contents of the retractable baskets. Each of the two levels can be pulled out separately. The design of FLYBOX LAMINA is also interesting - the baskets are made in graphite color, they fit harmoniously into the modern kitchen interior. The mechanism is easy to care for, because the baskets are easily removed. The baskets are made of solid sheet metal with a protective epoxy coating, which ensures a long service life. Installation of baskets is universal, left/right. They can withstand loads of up to 25 kg per shelf or up to 50 kg per mechanism.

Magic corner for the kitchen

The “magic corner” is blocks of baskets connected to each other. One block of baskets is attached to the front of the cabinet. When the door opens, the first block slides out and pulls the second block with it. When the door is closed, the blocks slide in the same sequence. There are magic corners that can be installed on both the left and right sides, so you need to be careful when choosing a mechanism. Magic corners are produced in different series, each series has its own advantages. The GALAXY magic corner is distinguished by an elliptical rod shape and a bottom with an anti-slip coating. Retractable corners of the ROUND series are based on a classic round rod. Pull-out baskets of these series are equipped with soft-closing guides. The mechanisms are designed for a facade width of 450 mm. The EASY CORNER corner mechanism has a universal type of installation; it can be installed on both the right and left sides. The shelves of the first row can be changed in height (3 positions). The mechanism is easy to install and, unlike the magic corners GALAXY and ROUND, is used with a swing facade.

Corner carousel for the kitchen

The basis of the mechanism is an axis around which round or bean-shaped shelves rotate. This is an elegant solution, but it is worth noting that the usable space of carousels is less than that of magic corners and corner mechanisms, because the corners of the boxes remain unoccupied. The clever design allows the baskets to be rotated independently of each other.

Corner dish drainer

We have developed our own solution for the upper boxes - corner drying racks for dishes. The dryers consist of two tiers and have two sets of trays. The upper tier is convenient for storing cups, the lower for plates. Dish dryers are designed for a body measuring 600 by 600 mm. They are not retractable, but their L-shaped design allows for maximum use of the cabinet's internal space.

Cabinet for installing a dryer

The best option is to install it above the sink or in close proximity to it, so you don’t have to make unnecessary movements when washing dishes. You can place the dryer in a cabinet that does not have a bottom: here the water immediately flows into the sink, and there is no need for a tray.

Two-tier dish dryer above the sink, built into the design of the wall cabinets of the kitchen unit

It is not very good to install dish dryers in a floor cabinet: you will have to make a lot of unnecessary movements (for example, bending over to pick up dishes).

Kitchen cabinets and corners with a drying rack must comply with certain rules:

  • Ventilation. To prevent smell from appearing in the closet, you need to ensure good air circulation. It is enough to drill a couple of holes on the sides.
  • Distances. It is important that the distance from the dishes to the door is at least 30 cm, and from the tray to the lower tier - at least 7 cm.
  • Sealing the bottom wall of the cabinet. In order not to damage the headset, it is best to treat it with silicone; it will protect the materials from moisture.

You can also create the appropriate mood in the kitchen by choosing the right color scheme for the dishes.

Choosing a built-in device for drying dishes

In the process of selecting this device for the kitchen, you need to decide in which cabinet it will be fixed. According to this criterion, dryers are divided into three subtypes:

  1. For installation in wall-mounted front cabinets;
  2. For mounting in cabinets that are hung in corners;
  3. For placement in floor-mounted lower storage areas.

Thanks to built-in dish drainers in the cabinet, your kitchen will take on a more aesthetically pleasing and well-groomed appearance.
The dryers for them are structurally similar, they differ in geometric shape, the first and third are straight, while the second is made at an angle. Once a decision has been made on the type of cabinet, you will need to make a choice regarding the material of manufacture.

The advantage of a built-in dryer is that dust will not settle on the dishes.

Plastic, of course, is more stable and hygienic, but metal always wins in aesthetic terms. The price aspect is also important when choosing a device; the chrome-plated version is the most expensive, but also reliable; as the cost decreases, it loses in resistance to corrosion damage.

The dishes will be neatly folded and will not take up much space.

And finally, you will have to think about the capacity of the dryer, whether it should be one or several rows, it all depends on the number of dishes being processed.

Dish drying rack in the cupboard: materials for making drying racks

There are several materials from which dish dryers are made:

  • Metal. Typically, dryers are made of steel, which is then coated with an anti-corrosion coating.

It looks very simple, but is actually quite spacious and easy to use design of a metal dish dryer

  • Stainless steel dryer. This product will cost an order of magnitude more than metal drying, but the strength, durability and other qualities are worth it. You will not need to additionally paint the product, since no traces of corrosion appear on it.

A neat stainless steel dish drainer is suitable for a kitchen in almost any style.

  • Plastic. The cheapest dish dryers are made from this material. In addition, the material will be hazardous to your health. The appearance of the product is very quickly lost; plaque and streaks form on the drying surface.

An original plastic tabletop dryer in an unusual design will brighten the mood of your kitchen

  • Tree. Such a dryer has always been considered a luxury item, but it cannot fit into every interior. To ensure that the product lasts a long time, the wood is coated with special varnishes. It has been proven that wooden drying racks are best suited simply for storing dishes dry.

A neat wall-mounted dish drainer made of light natural wood will perfectly complement the interior in a neutral color scheme

Tip: today almost any dryer can be bought in a store or ordered online. Quality directly affects the cost of the product. Preference should be given to models that are made from natural and safe materials.

Built-in dish drainer

The dish drainer is a durable mesh structure with a fairly simple configuration, securely mounted inside the kitchen cabinet. Its main functional task is the stable fixation of utensils in a vertical position, in other words, on the edge.

As a rule, a dish dryer consists of several independent sections.

A mandatory attribute of this device is a tray that is installed under the dryer. It is designed to collect and drain liquid that rolls off washed dishes. Some models of pallets are equipped with drain pipes attached to fittings.

In terms of their design, regardless of design and manufacturer, material and size, all built-in “dryers” are quite similar.

All modern devices for drying dishes are made from materials such as:

  • Highly durable plastic.
  • Stainless steel.
  • Aluminum.
  • Steel coated with enamel or chrome.

The function of this product is simple and clear: holding dishes in a stable vertical position until completely dry, collecting and removing accumulated moisture, and storing utensils in the future.

In essence, it is a securely fastened mesh structure that ensures reliable fixation of the plates in the “edge” position.

Classification of dish dryers

A traditional dish drainer has two compartments: the first holds plates, the second holds cups. Durable, water-resistant materials are used in the manufacture of system elements. For easy cleaning, the surface is coated with enamel or paint. A rubber coating can also be used, which reduces noise from the cookware during operation.

By type, dryers are divided into the following categories:

  • Independent models – produced as separate systems;
  • Models installed in kitchen furniture or at the bottom of the sink.

There are also open dryers; they need to be mounted on the wall above the sink or directly on the sink so that the remaining water that remains on the dishes as a result of washing flows into the sink bowl or into a specially designed stand.

Advantages of open dryers:

  • Installation can be done anywhere, by mounting to a wall or by conventional installation on another surface.
  • In operation, the products are characterized by undemanding and simplicity.
  • The models are cheaper than other types of dryers.

Dryers installed in furniture are divided into the following categories:

  • Single-tier. Only plates are dried in them;
  • Two-tier (two-level) - you can dry any utensils, except forks and spoons;
  • Dryers for special purposes - for dishes and cutlery.

Mounted systems

Such models have gained particular popularity and distribution. The wall-mounted dryer can be of two types:

  • Independent design;

Also, instead of a full-fledged drying rack, you can place a couple of shelves above the sink in the general style of the kitchen

  • A product built into kitchen furniture.

Almost invisible in the overall interior of the kitchen, a dish dryer built into the wall unit

Designs of the second category, depending on the shape and configuration, are:

  • With or without frame;
  • In one or two tiers;
  • Corner dish drainer.

The third option is interesting, however, really practical models (in which the dishes do not interfere with each other at the junction of the sides) are usually large, so the corner dryer is suitable for installation in large kitchen sets, with a large wall cabinet.

The design of a corner cabinet with a built-in drying rack for dishes is small at first glance, but in fact it is quite practical and spacious.

Built-in dryers must be mounted in accordance with certain rules. The main condition is a high-quality exhaust vent in the cabinet so that moisture does not accumulate inside, which harms the furniture. To ensure good ventilation, two holes should be drilled on the opposite side of the cabinet. The best place for the holes is on the sides of the cabinet, since the dishes will get dusty through the top or bottom holes.

Troflex dryers

These are models of non-standard shapes that are intended for interior decoration. Another advantage of the system is the ability to install it anywhere in the kitchen. The best option is a table or sink wing.

A sophisticated version of a metal dish drainer will become not only a decorative element in your kitchen, but also a fairly functional design that is easy to use.

Pros of built-in dish dryers

The benefits of using built-in dish dryers have been time-tested and therefore cannot be doubted.

The dishes are covered with fronts and do not attract unnecessary, unwanted attention.

Regardless of whether you wipe the dishes or put them in the dryer immediately after washing, they will be clean in any case.

The built-in kitchen “drying rack” is designed not only for directly drying dishes, but also for storing them.

Drying allows you to easily access the dishes you need. All items are stored separately from each other, which allows you to keep dry not only ceramic or glassware, but also expensive designer clay dishes, without worrying about the quality of storage.

But there are also disadvantages to using built-in dish dryers.

    The main one is the need to monitor the amount of water collecting in the pan. Even if the dryer tray is equipped with an automatic water drainage system, no one is safe from a clogged drain tube.

Water that regularly remains in the pan can cause an unpleasant odor over time, so it is recommended to periodically rinse and wipe the pan.

An ill-conceived, insufficient amount of ventilation inside the cabinet can cause premature failure of the facade hinges or even damage to the structural elements of the cabinet itself.

Choosing the right dish drainer for the kitchen

Before purchasing, you should decide on the location of the product. After this, you need to measure the gaps to the wall. If you buy a model for installation in a wall cabinet, the dimensions are measured from the inside. The standard parameters of built-in dryers are from 400 mm to 800 mm, the most common option is a 60 cm dish dryer in a cabinet.

The combination of a closed cabinet to accommodate a dish dryer and additional decorative shelves outside along the wall above the working surface of the table is an original solution for a small, bright kitchen

Dimensions must be measured very accurately. The distance between cups and plates plays a big role: the gap should be at least 300 mm. It should be taken into account that the compartment for cups is located in the upper part - this arrangement protects the dishes from water. The gap between the pallet and the lower section should be about 70 mm.

The presence of a tray is mandatory; it protects the furniture from water. It is advisable to have a dryer with a removable tray - it is easier to clean.

A fairly large dish dryer design with a pull-out tray for storing water

In small kitchen sets, dishes can be placed in pull-out dryers. They are installed in drawers located near the sink. The advantage of this option over others is that it is easier to remove dishes from it, since the product is located at the bottom and the drawers are easy to pull out.

A small corner in the kitchen for drying and storing various dishes - a convenient solution for rooms with large space

Regardless of what type of dryer is used, it must be remembered that the structure may break if overloaded. Thus, the 50 cm option is designed for 15 plates.

KIDBOX 5

For children's things

A children's drying cabinet is the best solution for a kindergarten, sports section for young skiers or swimmers. One chamber of such a closet can accommodate 5 sets of children's clothing: a hat with a scarf and mittens, a jacket and overalls, shoes and a rug for them.

The shelves and walls in the drying cabinet are mesh, which allows hot air to circulate throughout the working chamber and effectively dry the fabric. All sections are locked, so you don’t have to worry about the safety of your clothes in the locker room.

+ Pros of KIDBOX 5

  1. 10 kg – load on one mesh shelf;
  2. You can not only dry clothes, but also ventilate them, eliminating extraneous odors;
  3. there is a hole in the upper part of the cabinet body, you can connect the device to the hood;
  4. There is a timer that automatically turns off the drying after 4 hours;
  5. the cycle can be interrupted manually;
  6. The device is protected from overheating.

— Cons of KIDBOX 5

  1. The drying cabinet body must be connected to a separate ground loop.

What is the difference between a fixed dryer and a removable model?

All dryer models have two mounting options: secure fixation or removable design.

A big plus of a removable dryer is the ability to rearrange it - if unforeseen circumstances arise, the product can even be placed on a table surface. Another advantage is ease of care; for washing and disinfection, you can simply take the dryer out.

Don't be afraid to experiment and show your originality. Try different options to choose the one that best suits your interior

But the removable design can also be inconvenient, due to the discrepancy between the dimensions of the dish dryer and the cabinet - during operation it can move inside the cabinet.

However, most modern dryer models are adapted to the standard width of kitchen furniture. Non-standard sets are made to order; this usually happens when the dimensions of the furniture do not correspond to generally accepted parameters.

As for fixed dryers, they stay well in the cabinet, there is no possibility of the structure falling, and the dishes remain safe and sound. This is the main advantage of such dryers; according to other criteria, removable models are a more practical option: the cabinet can be used for other purposes, the dryer (and the walls of the cabinet itself) are easier to clean.

About the cost of dryers

Considering the variety of models, the price of products is determined by many factors: material of manufacture, design features, size, design, ability to be used only for dishes or also for cutlery.

Try making a dish drainer from scrap materials (for example, from wooden boxes) and your unique kitchen design will create the atmosphere you want

Another important factor is the manufacturer. Domestic products are usually cheaper, but the quality of the models is practically no different from foreign products. However, imported dryers usually have a more sophisticated design, and are often characterized by a non-standard configuration.

The cost of the same model may differ in different stores, so choosing a dryer wisely also means monitoring prices. At the same time, you can buy a dryer in an online store; other things being equal, prices there are usually lower.

Installing a dish dryer in a closet, how it’s done

Many people wonder how to install a dish dryer in a kitchen cabinet, but it’s easy if you approach this task responsibly. First of all, you need to take into account and calculate all the dimensional parameters so that the cabinet is not small in width and depth, then you need to calculate the height by combining the diameter of the largest plate, the height of the cup and the required clearance between their rows.

The main dimensions of the dryer are measured: length, height.

In addition, there must be room for the tray, which must be freely installed. The next important factor is the height of the owner of this kitchen appliance; the height of the wall cabinet or the choice of a floor cabinet depends on this indicator.

The operation does not take much time; you can install the dish dryer yourself.

Having made all the measurements and calculations, we buy the required sample and, using hand or power tools, try to assemble and install the device using the instructions. There is no need to rush, first the markings are made, then the structure must be secured inside. During installation work, safety regulations must be observed; screws must be screwed in, not driven in.

The grid on which you plan to place the plates must be installed at a distance of at least 30 cm from the top of the cabinet and another shelf.

As we can see from the above, a dish dryer built into cabinets is a functional and practical device designed to simplify and improve the process of hygienic processing of dishes in the kitchen. Installation of this device, with proper calculation, will not require a lot of time, effort and special skills. There would be a desire, and everything else will come in the process.

It is better to install the dryer in the middle of the cabinet, this will allow you to place dishes of the maximum size in it.
