We make a bedspread for a sofa from 7 types of material

Types and features of sofa decks

Currently, there is a wide variety of sofa decks in sizes, patterns, and fabrics. The shapes of the bedspread are mainly sewn in two types, based on the structure of upholstered furniture:

  1. On a straight sofa.
  2. On the corner sofa.

On a straight sofa

The first type is quite simple in its design, as it is in demand in many stores and fits common sofa sizes. Can be sold individually or as a set that includes:

  • rectangular blanket for the sofa;
  • two chair covers.

On the corner sofa

The approach to the second type is different, since it is non-standard. For corner sofas, both individual sofa decks and special sets consisting of several elements of various sizes are sold. But if you have non-standard furniture parameters, in order to avoid a mistake in the purchase, it is better to order individual tailoring.

Varieties

The popularity of sofa decks is explained by their practicality and attractive appearance. All products are classified according to shape and size, as well as materials of manufacture. Each option has its own characteristics that must be taken into account when choosing.

By shape and size

Modern capes are presented in a wide range of sizes, fabrics, and external designs. As for the forms, there are only two of them:

  1. On a straight sofa. Popular products that are produced in accordance with the dimensions of upholstered furniture. Bedspreads are sold separately or as a set with chair covers. Using traditional sofa decks, you can easily change the design of three-seat structures and models without armrests.
  2. Divandecks for a corner sofa. A non-standard option, may consist of one or more elements with different sizes. It will be quite difficult for owners of original furniture to choose a suitable cape. The solution to the problem will be to sew it yourself or order it from a specialist.

There is another classification of sofa decks - based on the presence of straight or rounded corners. The first option is characterized by clear shapes and straight lines, so it will fit well into high-tech or minimalist interiors. The second type looks softer, more elegant, and is relevant for the classic style, Provence, and country. Possible product sizes: 70 x 70 cm, 70 x 150 cm, 70 x 180 cm, 90 x 120 cm, 90 x 210 cm, 110 x 160 cm, 110 x 180 cm and so on.

According to the material of manufacture

The practicality, durability and appearance of a sofa deck depend on the material. The list of the most popular options includes the following types of products:

  1. Carpets. They are made of polyester and cotton, do not accumulate static electricity, and are easy to care for. Capes allow air to pass freely, have a soft texture, are pleasant to the touch, but do not last long.
  2. Velor. The most widespread are looped and split types of material. They have a pleasant fleecy surface, do not accumulate dust and dirt, are easy to care for, and retain their original shape for a long time. The main disadvantage of the fabric is the need to wash the entire product if it gets wet.
  3. Fur. Expensive sofa decks for sofas are relevant for eco-designs. Products with a soft texture look presentable, visually increase the size of the furniture, and do not get dirty for a long time. Capes are practical to use, have a wide range of colors, but can cause an allergic reaction.
  4. Acrylic. Such models are popular due to their many advantages: resistance to friction, retention of shape after washing, variety of colors, heat retention. Among the disadvantages are the accumulation of static electricity and the formation of pellets.
  5. Chenille. The textile consists of natural and synthetic fibers, has excellent density and a pleasant texture, is machine washable and easy to clean. The surface is resistant to sunlight, but is susceptible to the negative effects of moisture.
  6. Made from microfiber. A new type of fabric that is actively used in the production of sofa decks. Such capes are practical, durable, have a pleasant texture and a warming effect. The surface is not prone to the formation of pellets and is resistant to moisture.
  7. Plush. Very soft warm bedspreads, have an attractive appearance. The products are wear-resistant, durable, long-lasting, but can cause an allergic reaction.
  8. Made from jacquard. Spectacular models with a dense textured texture successfully mask furniture imperfections and hold their shape well. The material is of natural origin, therefore it is characterized by environmental safety. The only drawback is the high cost.

The composition of the fabric of the sofa deck is the main indicator of the quality of the product. Each option has its own characteristics, purpose, and style. The range is represented by natural and artificial, airy and dense materials.

Material of manufacture

One of the important indicators when choosing a product is the composition of the fabric. Since each has its own characteristics and purposes, as well as style. The range of fabrics is very large: from airy to dense and waterproof. The base is 80% natural: cotton, linen, viscose, velor.

Carpet sofa decks

Composition: cotton, polyester. Advantages:

  • easy to wash;
  • are not electrified;
  • pleasant to the body;
  • This type of bedspread breathes well and accumulates a minimum of dust.

There is only one drawback: they quickly become unusable.

Velor sofa decks

These are the most common bedspreads. There are two types of velor sofa decks depending on the design of the pile:

  1. Looped - this type of processing creates a dense, velvety and wear-resistant fabric (the technique is quite clear: fibers are added and tightened).
  2. Split - on one side there is a smooth surface of the pile, on the other there is a soft fabric.

Why are they so good and popular among other fabrics? Advantages:

  • pleasant velvety surface;
  • practical in their use;
  • can be cleaned with a dry brush (if it is not wet dirt);
  • does not accumulate dust or wool;
  • have high elasticity and do not stretch over time;
  • hypoallergenic;
  • has a wide variety of colors and goes well with any type of interior.

A deficiency can only occur if liquid gets in. Velor cannot simply be blotted, as stains remain on it, which are removed only after washing.

Fur sofa decks

They are very widely used to create eco-design. Such sofa decks are very expensive, so most often artificial raw materials are used in production.

Advantages:

  • do not get dirty for a long time, so they do not need frequent washing;
  • pleasant to the touch;
  • wear resistance;
  • visually increase the size of furniture;
  • solidity, but at the same time simplicity;
  • huge selection of colors.

The disadvantage is strong allergic reactions to synthetic fiber, so when choosing a cape you should carefully read the composition.

Acrylic sofa decks

These products are also widely in demand, as they have a number of advantages:

  • the structure of the fabric does not change with use or repeated washing;
  • the fabric is very durable and wear-resistant;
  • the use of a washing machine does not affect the fabric, its brightness and attractiveness - such an important indicator greatly pleases and inspires manufacturers, as the ability to create patterns and different colors increases;
  • very hypoallergenic and safe for both children and people with respiratory diseases;
  • pleasant to the touch and also have a warming property;
  • Acrylic threads do not fade when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Disadvantages: over time, static electricity accumulates, pellets appear, threads tend to stretch.

Chenille sofa decks

Contains natural and synthetic fibers reminiscent of corduroy.

Advantages:

  • wear-resistant and very dense fabric;
  • when dust accumulates, it can be easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner;
  • When cleaning the bedspread in the washing machine, you can add stain removers;
  • chenille threads are not able to fade in the sun;
  • the fabric does not form pills;
  • pleasant to the touch.

Disadvantages: non-moisture resistant fabric, quickly damaged if you have pets.{banner_serefs}{banner_ondes}

Microfiber sofas

Every year the popularity of this material is growing due to such advantages as:

  • practicality and durability of use;
  • not able to form pellets and shed;
  • hypoallergenic material;
  • pleasant tactile sensations;
  • moisture resistance;
  • warming fabric.

There are no disadvantages. The only recommendation for use is to clean with a vacuum cleaner to avoid the accumulation of various microbes.

Plush sofa decks

This look is very cozy and comfortable. Advantages:

  • warming material;
  • durable and wear-resistant fabric;
  • has an attractive appearance;
  • easy to clean.

A deficiency may occur due to allergies. But it can be avoided by regular use of a vacuum cleaner and various brushes to clean the material.

Jacquard sofas

This is a very dense material with a textured weave, which adds sophistication to the bedspread.

Among the advantages:

  1. Disguising a sagging sofa.
  2. Resistant to deformation.
  3. Natural composition.
  4. Durability and wear resistance.

Disadvantages: quite high cost of the product.

Why does a corner sofa need a blanket?

The fabric, no matter how durable it is, wears out over time, gets dirty, fades, losing its former brightness. Practical owners cover upholstered furniture with a blanket immediately while they are new, or use special covers. But if your corner sofa is no longer new, and you are wondering how to improve the situation, then use this moment to update the interior at the same time, because a good blanket can change the look of the sofa as if you had changed the upholstery.

Bedspreads made from modern fabrics are practical, easy to care for, and hypoallergenic. In addition, you can choose an expensive or economical option, or even have several of them - for different life situations or just a change of mood.

Another small drawback is that the blanket will have to be removed every time you lay out the upholstered furniture, and if this annoys you, choose the simplest design that can be quickly covered and removed.

The textile product not only protects the furniture from abrasion, but also, complementing it, decorates the overall interior

Sofa decks with elastic band

They are modern protectors of upholstered furniture from dust and various contaminants, completely covering the surface.

Advantages of these products:

  1. Exactly according to the parameters of the sofa.
  2. Gives a stylish look.
  3. Extends service life.
  4. Easy to take off, wash and put on again.
  5. A variety of elastic covers (from everyday calm tones to festive ones).

It is sofa decks with elastic that perform all the functions of protecting upholstered furniture from moisture, stains, and other contaminants. It is worth noting that cheap bedspreads of this type are short-lived and can deteriorate after the first wash.

Sofa cover pattern

A cover for a sofa is really convenient both in practical terms and in terms of changing the surroundings. After all, having several fabric solutions, you can alternate capes, thereby avoiding monotony in the interiors.

Sewing a sofa cover with your own hands

I found the master class on the Mom’s Secret website very interesting, where they presented a guide on sewing a sofa deck for furniture from Ikea. The Ikea sofa was purchased for a children's room, which meant that there was a high probability that the material would be stained, so the decision was made to sew a beautiful cover.

Materials and tools

Let's consider making the simplest type of cover - a cape. In this model, you will need to sew a sofa cover that is continuous for the back and seat. Separately cut and sew the armrests, connect the parts into a single whole and design the finished product. Everything is done simply.

To work you will need the following:

  • fabric, footage is calculated based on the size of the sofa;
  • tape measure;
  • tailor's chalk;
  • sewing pins and needles;
  • wooden ruler;
  • thread (preferably with lavsan for a sewing machine);
  • scissors;
  • pattern paper

When everything is prepared, you need to cut out the cover. How to sew sofa covers with your own hands is written below.

Cutting out parts

Using a centimeter, measure the backs and armrests of the sofa. Draw on paper according to the dimensions obtained. There is no need to rush to do everything on the fabric at once. The proverb that it is better to measure seven times and cut only once is very true in this case. A lot of fabric is used for the cover, and an incorrectly cut piece will spoil all the work. Therefore, it is more practical to first cut everything out on paper and attach it to the sofa to see if the size fits.

The pattern must first be applied to paper.

When everything is checked that the drawing fits perfectly, you can start cutting on the fabric:

  • Iron the fabric through damp gauze. It is better to wash cotton or wool fabrics in warm water. This must be done so that the material shrinks, and subsequently, the finished product does not become smaller in size;
  • Fold the fabric right side inward. Pin the drawings with safety pins;
  • Use tailor's chalk to trace the outline of the paper. After 1.5-2 cm, draw a second line;
  • cut along the second line.

The parts are cut, you can start sewing.

Sewing

Work begins with outline. The video in the article shows all stages of the work.

  • fold the patterns right side inward;
  • sweep away with temporary screeds;
  • Immediately try on the received cover on the sofa.

Where can I buy a sofa deck

To avoid fakes and low-quality goods, it is recommended to buy in specialized stores. The most important manufacturers of sofa decks are Turkey, China, Italy and Spain. When purchasing, carefully read the ingredients and information about the supplier. All patterns and threads must be smooth and accurate.

There are many online stores where you can easily choose the sofa deck that suits you and order it. But before you do this, for the desired result, we recommend reading customer reviews and clarifying all parameters with consultants.

How to sew a cape yourself

Taking measurements

The general principle of taking dimensions for a corner sofa is this: you need to divide the entire surface plane into rectangles, and then measure their length and width. The sum of these rectangles with seam allowances on all sides of approximately 6-7 cm will indicate the amount of fabric needed. The dimensions of seats, backs, armrests and the front of upholstered furniture are measured separately.

The first thing you need to do is find out the exact dimensions of the furniture pieces

Sketch and pattern

Draw a rough sketch and original ideas on a piece of paper.

Then, referring to the sketch, draw out all the elements of the future pattern in full size, taking into account seam allowances. Carefully cut out the parts.

Pattern option for a corner sofa

Transferring the pattern to fabric

Lay the material on a flat surface, such as the floor or a large table. Lay out the pattern pieces on the fabric and trace them with chalk or colored pencil. Then cut out the parts exactly along the contours.

Assembly on furniture

Lay out the pieces of the bedspread on the appropriate surfaces and sweep them together with a brightly colored thread.

Pattern transfer

Pre-tailoring and adjustment

Remove the basting blanket from the upholstered furniture and sew all the seams, retreating 2-3 cm from the basting seam. First you need to sew the armrests. When the main part is ready, sew the finished armrests to it.

Then the product is turned right side out and a test fitting is done. In those places where the bedspread lay unevenly, make an additional adjustment mark, then you need to sew it again, now taking into account the adjustment.

Pre-sewing the bedspread

Edge processing

If at the next fitting the bedspread looks ready, proceed to processing the seams and edges of the material.

First, remove the running seams and, turning the blanket right side out, put it on the sofa. Fold the edges of the fabric to the desired width and secure with pins. Assess how evenly the edges hang in relation to the sofa and the floor. You can baste the hem in place. Then remove the product from the sofa and sew the seams along the edges. You can also sew pillows to the bedspread.

Finishing the edge of the bedspread

How to lay it correctly

The cape is ready! All that remains is to learn how to properly cover upholstered furniture. You should start with the armrests. Find the short seams at the armrests and arrange it so that they coincide with the ends of the sofa armrests. Then throw the corresponding part over the back of the sofa and straighten the blanket along its entire length. Align the bottom edge around the perimeter. Make sure that the blanket is stretched symmetrically and that there are no distortions in the fabric pattern.

The blanket for the corner sofa can be one-piece or consist of several wedges

A blanket for a corner sofa solves several problems at once: it protects furniture and extends its service life, simplifies interior care and adds aesthetic variety. And if it is made with your own hands, it brings special pleasure to the owners.

How much do sofa decks cost?

A simple bedspread, without any decoration, can be purchased from 3,000 rubles (double sofa). The larger the furniture parameters, the more expensive the purchase (four-seater from 9,000 rubles and above).

There is no limit to this purchase, since the more patterns and designs, the better the characteristics of the fabric, the further the price rises. In this case, you can leave at least 10,000 rubles in the store.

Thus, when choosing sofa decks, you should take into account the parameters of upholstered furniture, the characteristics of the room, the presence of pets, children, and people with respiratory diseases. An important factor when purchasing will be your interior, since special decor requires an appropriate type of bedspread, the price of which can increase depending on desires and variety. Remember, the durability of the product also depends on proper use.

How to choose a sofa deck?

The market offers a wide range of sofa decks in different colors and shapes. Even a discerning designer can choose a sample to his liking. When choosing sofa decks, you must take into account that the main thing for them is the durability and strength of the fabric. For the production of these products, heavy textiles are usually used: tapestry, velor, dense mixed fabrics based on cotton and synthetics. These fabrics do not get dirty for a long time and have a pleasant dense texture.
